      Yeh you're correct. Its not a skill that is recognised as a trade so unfortunately you can't really find a way in unless you have a shaper that's willing to teach. Most people ( myself included ) are self taught and that is years of trial and error and research put it to just get a board that resembles something surf able...

    Almost certainly a dumb question, but what's to prevent someone from piecing together some blocks of hard packing foam (the kind used for flat screen TVs and such) to make a blank? With the fiberglass resin melt it? Is it not durable enough? ... Thanks for the video.

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  Год назад +1

      Not a dumb question at all mate.
      Nothing really.. the only real issue is strength. The packing foam is generally a really low grade eps with large beads. The beads make it hard to get a nice smooth shape and the low strength increases snapping and heel dents. Some of those strength issues can be overcome with the appropriate glassing schedule. Also incorporating a stringer would help. Also the glue lines between pieces of foam can be an issue to shape as it’s harder than the surrounding foam. BUT I have seen it done and I personally think it’s awesome. Better than just throwing it in the rubbish.

    Awesome vid on the process of this build! And the testing at end!..Lots of ideas, got a few oldies in my shed...What sort of glue did you use on the rippings to make board wider?...Blanks here in NZ are around 120-150$nz, so good to save a few $ while in covid times...Glue give u any issues while shaping? Many thanks great vids.

      Thanks mate. I used gorilla glue although the wrong one, as it was all I could find. You want to use the brown honey type expanding poly one that gorilla glue make.
      It does dry slightly harder than the foam but you can still shape it. I’ve reshaped a bunch of old shapes so it’s definitely worth a crack.

    Hey brother, I'm Bill from Arizona. What is the best way to laminate sheets of EPS together?

    Why didn't you just grab fin with pliers and pull it out? Done it myself in similar situation.
    Maybe you struggled because the oard is so flat and fins are too far forward with too much toe in. Try FCS retro keels or any smaller raked fin might calm it down a bit.
    Still looks like fun and will grovel for sure.

      If you see in the video the fin has only one layer of glass left. Pliers would just pull that to pieces. 3 1/2 in the nose and 2 in the tail. Fins at 8. Think it had more to do with the bottom being hardcore V and the knifey rails more than anything else

      @@Shrednaught good point re the fin. I'm guilty of trying to make small twins in big surf it's a losing game! I reckon in waist high mush you'll have a blast of it. Could you notice the asymmetrical stringer?

      It was a hard one cause I only had what I could get out of the busted blank. The first session was way too big. The final session was far more appropriate. Not really. Shaping it was a nightmare though

    Great effort. I found a broken longboard that I want to make into a mini Simmons. Is there a good method to peeling all the fiber glass off? Thinking of shallow cuts and pry with putty knife?

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  2 года назад +1

      Thanks mate. It’s always better to try upcycle rather than just throw it out.
      To get the glass off you can use a dremel or jigsaw and cut very thinly along the rails. From there you can pry up. You will lose some foam so try to make sure the shape you’re attempting to get out of the broken board has enough space to allow for the lost foam.
      Good luck 🤙

    do you use the same resin on the hot coat ? and why did you spray it if the resin had pigment in it

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  Год назад

      No you use sanding resin. It’s just lam resin with a wax additive to make the resin sandable.
      Originally I wanted to see if the yellow paint would hide the scars but it didn’t so I put some pigment into the resin.

    This is so sick, Love that tron style finish!
    I've always installed my FCS2 boxes pre lam, do you think there's any benefit to doing them after?
    Also cant believe you have access to waves like that with no line up!

      Yew! Thanks.
      The only real reason I do it post lam is because of the resin tint. If I can’t see the air around the boxes then sand it open when sanding it doesn’t look that clean.. not that looking clean was the effect with this board 🤣
