    I was like “ughhh…he’s glassing in the boxes after the lam” but you put cloth over the boxes. Looks super clean! Last video I watched the shaper put the fin boxes in during the hot coat, seems that it wouldn’t be nearly as strong.

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  Год назад +1

      I almost always do boxes post lam when I’m working with tint. Looks cleaner and if you can’t see and air bubbles in the boxes through the tint then sand them open it looks messy. You can do it at hotcoat stage but you need to sand right back to glass fibre to get a mechanical bond.

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  3 года назад +1

      Yeh I blow dry them mostly just to speed the drying process up. Did you do the pinline on top of the fill coat? It’ll leach under the tape if it isn’t pushed down hard enough and if it hasn’t been sanded to a high grit. I normally sand the area where the pin line goes with 240 to remove the big scratches and that normally helps.

    Lovely looking board mate! I have a few dumb questions about doing resin swirl jobs with epoxy. Do you mix up the resin with the hardener before adding the pigments? Did you do a practice run with the colours to see what works or is it sheer talent?? What kind of pigments do you find work best? I'm hoping to do a swirl job on my next board but dont want it to turn into brown sludge...

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  Год назад +1

      With epoxy I would just mix the part A and part B before the pigment as you have heaps of time generally. I don’t normally do any practice but knowing how colours mix helps. Green and orange can make brown…
      Surfboard specific tints work. I don’t use powders. With swirls it’s always better to have excess resin. Where the colour lands is what’ll be. Try to pull the resin off the board without it going over other colours/resin to prevent muddling. I use a rag to wipe my squeegee off every pull. I have a video with a resin swirl and channels that might help a bit too. Just have a search in my videos list 🤙

    Enjoying and learning from your clips! question: what is your reasoning for putting in the fin boxes AFTER you glass? Most of what I have seen it is done before glassing. just curious as to your reasoning
    Mahalo, Mike in Hawaii.

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  2 года назад +2

      I’ll always install pre glass if it’s a clear board but for colour resin work I’ll do it post glass. Reason is because if you miss any air bubbles ( because sometimes you can’t see through the pigment resin ) and you then sand the air bubbles open it leaves the area around the fin boxes looking sloppy/messy.

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  2 года назад

      Thanks man. I normally just spray them with water. Let them dry and then wipe down with a clean rag. Sometimes soap will react badly with resin. You can even just blow the dust off with an air compressor. Try to use gloves or something whenever touching to help with the contamination 🤙

    Are you using tints or piments?

  • @ivanetenete
    @ivanetenete 3 года назад

    Great job, mate. This might be a stupid question, but...what do you think about using a cloth fabric instead of fiberglass? I've seen on the internet that there are shapers that create low enviromental impact boards using flax fabric for example. Taking into account that the mixture of the resin and the fabric is what gives strength to the final result, it doesnt sound so crazy to me to use flax, cotton or any regular fabric that is used for creating clothes.

    • @Shrednaught
      @Shrednaught  3 года назад +2

      You can definitely use those fabrics. The only thing with them is generally you’ll still need to do at least one layer of fibreglass over the top for sanding. They don’t like to be sanded as if you hit them the fuzz up

    Fin box install after lam and hot coat?

    • @Shrednaught

      Yeh man. So with colour work I install after the lam. With a tinted resin it can be hard to see any air bubbles around the boxes and if you miss these and open them up when sanding it looks real messy. I only fill coat the deck and leave the bottom. This is just a way to make sure the deck is protected when I’m routing out the boxes and doesn’t get any dirt/dust/smudges on the lam.

    You're an incredibly talented shaper! Such a process.
    Can I ask, what do you call that tool at 5:58 that looks like it locks to hold tension, shaping a uniform deep concave? Did you make that yourself?
    Learn so much watching your vids dude! Keep it up, it's inspiring
    (damn dude! using a rounded rasp to edge down the nose/tail stringer, then blending it out! so cool)
    (and bending that razor blade)

      Thanks man. The tool is a concave / convex sanding tool. I actually purchased this online but making one shouldn’t be too hard. If I get a chance I’ll do a video on making it
