What a great video with educational material. Thank you for always putting out amazing content.
Helpful information. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! Considering they are pricey, retinol & SPF is probably much better value for money!
thank you for the infos doc. I'm nearing my 30s and want to step up in boosting my skin elasticity hence i wanted to learn more on these collagen thing. this video is really helpful for me thank you again
this is so helpful, thank you so so much!
Thank you doctor Liu🙏🏻 I have been searching and many doctors says recent research etc. but you narrowing down and give the details about the current researches is so beneficial 🥰🤗 Already subscribed
I like getting information from a healthcare professional. Thanks!
This was a good video. It felt like I was getting advice 1 on 1 from the Doc.The conclusion I came to is I'm going to use up my remaining collagen and stop after that. I would have used it for about 4 months straight so hopefully I would have received some benefit for that duration. But I'm taking other supplements so having nice looking skin is near the bottom of my list.
You, Dr. Dray and Doctorly are a gift from the heavens. Thank you for performing such an important service.

Super agreed, love the 3 pages
Absolutely Maureen
I went to the dermatologist and they were so dismissive. RUclips has much better doctors that are answering all my basic preventative questions
I actually, see a big difference in my face with or without collagen powder
I appreciate your open-minded presentation. I have been taking collagen supplements for a while and honestly I’m not sure I see much skin benefit. Where they help me is with joint pain. It did take about four months to notice a benefit however. I’ve “tested” their efficacy for me by stopping and after about a month much of the pain returns. I’ll keep crossing my fingers for the skin benefits 😊
I Think it’s one of those products the risk is so low if you enjoy taking by all means go ahead but Just don’t enough data for skin
It may take for some 8 months to see improvement in wrinkles
Is protein so it does help with hair
Been taking it for years and still getting wrinkles ...I do not think it works for skin health but maybe joints
Yes, they help me as well with muscle and joint pain. Muscle recovery after exercise
I am taking collagen peptides powder brand vital over a month now. Very effective and I can see excellent results in a couple weeks. You are right. Collagen alone does not do magic. It's also involve with a healthy lifestyle, fitness levels and daily activities. It's also depending on what you input daily in the body. Like anything else, health is a package with all the basic rules to follow. I am very happy with the results from taking daily collagen peptides.
the marine or the bovine one?
I agree but if I change my whole lifestyle, including fitness levels and etc, how do I know the effects actually come from collagen peptides and not *just* the healthier way of living?
Anecdotal evidence = not helpful
Thanks for sharing your expertise :)
Thinking of trying Isagenix Collagen Elixir. I have watched some really good reviews but I do believe in Skincare as well!! Very good information, I appreciate it!! 👍 🥰
Thank you for this video. I have tried watching Dr. Dray in the past and while I think some of her videos are informative, I prefer your content and presentation style. I'm glad you're here on RUclips!
Dr Dray is just weird

Just found your channel:) Well done! I would love more information for "aged skin!" LOL Super hard to find a dermatologist addressing the over 60 skin. We need help too! Day and night routine would we great!
this is really informative.❤
When I take a powder formula, it seems to dry my skin out instead of improving it!😟🤷♀️

What do you think of working face muscles for firmness? What about facial massage?
They seem to help my joints and nails.
Thanks for the video :-) it should be do they work how do they work instead of the reverse order
Since it improves skin hydration, will if have a bad effect on people with oily skin? I mean, will it make oily skin more oily? Thank You!!
Glad I watched this video before I went out and wasted my money. Social media will have u thinking you need each and every single thing these influencers are getting/doing! 🙄
finally, a derm that speaks some sense about collagen supplements! :) you said that sixty days is not enough for a visible increase in collagen. how many days are?
Hi doc! Do collagen supplements increases CREATININE LEVEL? Thank you -newest subcriber from the Philippines.

Do you have a video on chemical peels?
So the supplements don’t work - I always suspected . Thx
Does plant based collagen works?
here's why i'm confused. any COMPLETE protein already contains all the amino acids that collagen does. our bodies break down the amino acids and then reformulate them into whatever tissue needs to be supported, be it muscle, bone or skin. so why, then, would collagen supplements be of any use as long as you're eating enough protein? i want a study that uses this as a control, that ensures all the subjects are already getting enough protein.
you are correct. taking collagen suppplents is just money wasting. When you consume it, your stomach just break down this collagen into amino acids😁😁😁. And i think, collagen does not have all the amino acids. Its better to eat protein rich foods that have all amino acids like egg white, soya fish meats and legumes.Their protein is also be broken down to amino acids just same when you consume collagen supplement.
think about how people take other vitamins as well when they can also get it from food. simple reasons and i think you already know this, it's because they cant eat enough to cover all the vitamins we need. also a protein rich diet (which is the only way to build collagen aside from supplements) may not be recommended for someone who has a health problem like liver disease. collagen peptides that is usually in supplements are incomplete protein and suitable for people who have a low protein diet because of a disease but still want to keep the collagen in their body. other people can also be deficient of it like again, people with liver problems. collagen supplements are one way to compensate the collagen they are losing.
Define complete protein, and you'll get part of the answer to your question.
@@presence5426 there's already a widely agreed upon definition but thank you
@@cloud041089 Yeah, there's a definition. "any COMPLETE protein already contains all the amino acids that collagen does." No, not necessarily. The list of 8 essential amino acids making up a "complete" protein doesn't include glycine, proline, hydroxyproline. But collagen is loaded with these. This is a major reason collagen works; these 3 AA's, and the peptides they make up. Other proteins may not have these peptides, or not in sufficient amounts. As far as controls, I'm sure the any scientists who did studies on collagen thought of that. Further, most people do get enough protein, at least in Western countries. So that would likely include study participants in the control groups.
What is your take on using it for joint support?? I take it daily after I workout and I have noticed a big difference in my joints.
What is the Brand? 🙏

I bought a cream type for my face and neck. There are so many to choose from I just picked a medium priced one. Do you know if this work better than pills?
Cream form doesn't work because the molecule is too large and isn't absorbed.
Does collagen have any side effects??
My age 17 years old but when my skin is scanned then my skin age was seen in 28 years old. In this situation can i takes supplements? Please reply me doctor.!😢😓
Which brand do you recommend? Which one has the type of collagen you mentioned?
I think vital peptide is the most popular and breakdown wise have more proline and HP

Does bb lab collagen works?
Thank you for this. I have been dealing with a query on this subject just today.
If Dr Liu is happy for me to recommend an organic wholefood GMOFree amino acid (all 22) protein supplement as well as an organic, vegan marine sourced skin care range that’s done wonders for many people - I’ll go ahead.
Im taking collagen pills and yes it makes my skin hydrated thus it looks plumper, ( no topical creams applied because i always get black/white heads whenever i use moiturizers/creams) i also notice that it makes my hair feel softer , i hve a dry hair before because i dye it every 2 weeks to cover up grays ,.and also my joint pains is gone , so i beg to disagree to those dermatologist youtubers saying that collagen pills has no effects on skin they say once u take it, it doesnt reach on ur skin....of course it is not a life changing pills but once your skin is dehyrated , u look fresh and glowing,
I started taking a collagen supplement 5 months ago. It was for a few different reasons. Main reason was that I had eye issues and I read that even your eyes need collagen. So I bought it for that reason mainly, but also wanted to see if it will have an effect on my skin, nails, hair etc. So I am a natural darker brunette. But I decided to highlight my hair, 3 months later. I had so much bad luck with hairdressers etc, that I have already visited different salons 5 times in 3 months. So I am a blonde now haha. What really surprises me every time is that the hairdresser would comment about how it is important to keep my hair healthy while there's still no damage to it, at this stage. I've been to 4 different hairdressers, and they all comment on how, fortunately, my hair doesn't seem damaged. Even friends etc, when they see me, their first reaction is - your hair looks nice. How is it possible that it does not look damaged... I'm really, personally convinced that the collagen supplement is keeping my hair strong and healthy from the inside. Ok, I am doing a lot of other stuff too - like deep conditioning from the outside, masks, heat protectors etc - but I do feel that the collagen is playing a big role as well. My hair and nails grows fast. It's strong. My nails are stronger than ever. I don't loose as much hair as always (and considering how much I've bleached it this year, I would have expected more than usual hair loss). I don't struggle with neck and shoulder tension migraines. I am not sure if I am seeing a difference in my skin... But hair, skin and nails are always connected and I won't be surprised if there is deeper stuff happening in my skin, that I am not even aware of. So I feel impressed by the collagen supplement. Just ordered supplies for the rest of the year haha
How long did it take for collagen to have noticeable effect for u?
@@notme7310 in my case, I noticed my nails were growing faster and it was way stronger, within the first month of taking collagen.

I would like to know which one is the most effective to take, is it the capsule, powder or the inject type?
Liquid
As a scientist, your explanation is the best I've seen among all others on RUclips! Of course, everyone else then promotes collagen products and sells them. Ugh! Yes, industry-sponsored is a big red flag in these studies. In addition, how is the product monitored for its contents? Where is the safety data for long-term use? Supplemental products are not regulated and taking them is a risk in itself, never mind the cost of this product. Strong pass for me.
I think something good to mention would be to mention where collagen proteins are most often concentrated in the foods that we eat. I'm most certainly not an expert, but I imagine these proteins would be too greatly found in plant based food stuffs at all (and I imagine this includes the aminos as well), and I imagine that the food stuffs where these proteins are mostly found, like bones, cartilage etc, these aren't too greatly ingested in a western diet, possibly indicating that supplementation would be a lot more beneficial than not. But really though, this is just a very uneducated opinion garnered from listening to a single educator. I really cannot say for sure how effective the body is at maintaining these things. Does the body convert aminos and other proteins from non-collagen forming sources into collagen forming aminos? I wouldn't be surprised if that could be the case, but I also imagine the body takes the route of ease, so would it be easier for the body to breakdown/tap into its own collagen or its own other protein/amino pools to be used elsewhere, or to be shifted from less important things like the skin to maintain other areas where collagen is more important, such as viscera etc? Does the body do this? Or would it be easier to take in the hydrolysed and to store and then use in organs, and extra can be used for skin? Haha! I really cannot say! That would have to be based on the effectiveness and integrity of the genes for encoding and synthesizing I suppose. Really cannot say, just gonna have to see.
Bones and cartilage is where is found. Bone Broths are great way to consume it.
Collagen is mostly taken from animals and not planf based foods
Sorry, can you just confirm me COLLAGEN PEPTIDES OR THE PILLS IS GOOD TO USE OR NO ?
Collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin so collagen creams are ineffective. But there is research to support dietary collagen.
Garden of life protein collagen peptides is the only one I've ever tried and I like it . 👌🏼

They use grass fed cows in Germany, which means non GMO, and really great quality.

“Your body is not smart enough” ha ha ha Medicine has not yet figured out how the body works. Just saying. Not sure who is not smart enough.
why are you watching this video or seeking any sort of expert opinion if that's your stance.
@@danielchilds8327 real experts understand that the body is smart enough given the right raw materials and proper environment to do and recover from pretty much anything. Don't remember why I watched this 3 months ago but this "expert" is wrong.
@@baaaaaa2898 so you say experts haven't figured out the body enough to given any objective take, and you then reply their are experts who do understand how body works... I'd focus on figuring out how your own brain works ...
@@danielchilds8327 ( : what I said is that this woman is talking nonsense. If you want to understand (partly) how the body works i recommend you start reading Dr. Ray Peat and learn physiology and biochemistry if you have the patience to learn deeply. Collagen is extremely beneficial because of the amino acid profile lacking some of the “bad” aminos that we don’t need after we grow up. It is very anti inflammatory and combats cancer /research glycine which is 1/3rd of collagen/I am not sure who’s brain is not working properly(what you tried to suggest - that I am stupid) but I will not try to offend anyone here except the woman who is pretending to understand how collagen works and spewing wrong information.
@@baaaaaa2898 I guess it comes down to sources. The body does break down collagen into it's simple amino acid form. Plenty parts of the body are composed of those same amino acids, so all she's saying is the body won't direct it to your intended place.
She's also highlighting how there are no extensive studies on collagen, which is true. Most cut of at a certain point like she mentioned, and she also mentions there's a bodily effect that correlates to that same period of time, so it's uncertain if the benefits are permanent.
She's just highlighting how uncertain everything around collagen is. Now if your body does break down collagen into it's amino acid forms. There are plenty of other more affordable sources of those amino acids in the form of protein powders, vegetables, ect.
Collagen is incredibly pricey, and while it does have an effect, is that effect really as special as many sources are leading us to believe it is.
can you just talk straight for like 10 seconds WITHOUT CUTTING THE VIDEO ?! ffs bro, its annoying af
Makes you think, what did she really say originaly that they had to edit the tape this badly. Better to reshoot it.
Lol😂
I've been taking collagen powder everyday for 8 months now..., believe me.., it has very little to zero effect. The reason I've been taking it for 8 months so far is because I got a great discount for buying in bulk, so I might aswell use it. The powder form is absolutely useless on its own.., you need to be consistant with other vitamins & nutrients plus exercise everyday. But even then, there is no visible effect on your skin nor can you feel improvement in joints & muscles.
At most.., less than 1% of ingested collagen powder has a very slim chance of making its way to your skin, in fact you'd have to take collagen powder everyday for years and pray youl'll see & feel a slight difference.. Your skin ages everyday, so the powder will always be playing catch up.., and it will cost you a lot of money to keep up with zero guarantee of any change in your body and skin.
Stay away from this expensive overhyped product.., get your protein, nutrients, minerals & vitamins elswhere and exercise for 15mins a day.
Eat fish, red meat and chicken...., and start consuming bone broth.
Collagen powder is a scam..!!
That’s like saying when you take paracetamol your body isn’t smart enough to know where to take it. I think you should stick to dermatology and not biology sweetheart
