    Most riders don't need any more than what this R7 provides. And a really skilled rider would have a blast on it.

      Most riders don't "need" to ride at all. As soon as you start only doing "needs" you find very quickly you can't do very much. This would be on my sportbike shortlist, but I'm not going to start caring that others want an R1.

      @Wilberon_McBane 2 года назад +34

      Totally agree dude. But I'll also add that along with enjoyment, bit of talent and not necessarily needing 200bhp, there's the final point that many of us (myself included) can't afford the 200bhp Superbikes even if I wanted one anyway. Watching the "big boys" at trackdays when I'm on shonky old SV Minitwin you see them piling in fuel, ripping through tyres and generally just looking like it costs an absolute fortune to keep them going. I just fill my tank up and crack on for the day. Same tyres wet/dry/whatever and always have a massive laugh. I reckon one of these would be exactly the same smiles per pound 😎👍

      Maybe it's just classic American sensibilities, but who doesn't want 200hp? My 2005 ZX10R has way more power than I can use, dont care, want more 😄

    • @martinfirth908
      @martinfirth908 2 года назад +10

      You could just go buy an older 600cc super sport for cheaper and have an infinitely better time with that talent. Plus the 200hp bikes are easy as hell to ride. I know, I have one, the aids do all the work. I went from a 2004 164hp GSR1000 to a 2021 200hp R1, the R1 is so easy to ride. I don't even have to try. Turning the aids off is another story however. This bike is a budget bike, aimed at those who can't afford better. Let's not sugar coat it.

      @alanv3185 2 года назад +59

      You always need more power even if you're never going to use it. Imagine a tornado comes out of no where and then BOOM YOU'RE IN A YAMAHA COMMERCIAL! That's when you use all the power you never got to use. Imagine if you don't have enough power then. The tornado eats you up and you're dead AND MORE IMPORTANTLY...you're not in the yamaha commercial. A nightmare

      To be fair it's a ballache riding a low powered bike on the road. I ride a 1000 not because I think I'm Rossi... I'm just lazy, I want to be able to do 100mph in 1st gear and 30mph in 6th. 1000cc Sportbikes just make better road bikes than smaller capacity sportsbikes.

A few mates have CP2 and CP3 engined Yamaha's and they rave about them so the R7 seems a natural progression in the middleweight class

    Fair play. Seen a load of reviews on this & was wondering what Al was going to think. It sounds like they've done what they did with the Tenere 700 and did a great job with a simple formula. I've never had a problem with it being called an R7. I did have an issue with people talking about a happy shopper as if it was the second coming, the hype of this bike has been huge. If Yamaha is going to go own route of leveraging existing engine and frame trom MT-09 saving basically 90% plus development costs of a new bike, then we the riding enthusiast can logically assume they'll pass along that cost efficiency and not take advantage of the situation.

      @@robbikebob sales of superbikes are already down - the whole reason for these middleweight sports bikes making such a splash is that people don't want crazy performance for the roads. For the people who want an R1 or a superbike, I don't think the presence of the R9 will do that. However, I think we would see more people who aren't comfortable with the R1 go for the R9. It would have the perfect amount of power for the road.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir 2 года назад +1

      @@thecaptain5344 it's got more to do with cycles of trends. sportsbikes were very "in" for a long time, and saw lots of innovation, however most of that innovation became centered around the archetype racing classes, and once emissions entered the chat it quickly became less viable to keep funding r&d for said bikes. Especially the 600 class bikes were so stretched out that you could no longer justify the bump up in price per generation, without the equal bump in performance. That's why only the flagship superbike segment continues to shine.
      Instead other segments took over where middleweight sportsbikes left the scene, stuff like retro street bikes, adv bikes, etc proved to be equally successful and started receiving lots of investment from companies - which in turn made these segments even more popular amongst buyers, because buyers are naturally more interested in the segments that receive most fundings and improve the most from generation to generation. Popularity creates trends, etc.
      However, with the re-introduction of the middleweight sporty segment and proving that classic sportsbikes still have a place in riders' hearts, this may very well change the scene again over the next couple of years - and make non-race standard classes more appealing (not just for riders, but for the companies to invest into).
      There are clear patterned cycles of trends that take over from each other. And middleweight sporty bikes are definitely on the rise again, albeit in a slightly new package compared to prior years' raceclass bred replica sportsbikes.

    Epic, nice one Yamaha. I've a Yamaha with a CP4 motor and fancy electronic Ohlins suspension and I still think the R7 is ace. I'd love to have one as a track hack. As much as I love my monster rocket riding a slower bike fast is very very rewarding. More so than riding a fast bike fast.

    The thing is unless they do a sub 100bhp trackday group as you suggested these bikes are dangerous when out on track with 200bhp plus bikes.
    Ive nearly rear ended a few twins because the closing speed is so vast.
    But they corner well so you sometimes dont know they are actually a low power bike untill you nearly stuff one up the arse.
    Sub 100bhp group also sounds like alot of fun too and id be interested in doing that myself

    So in a different light this is essentially a fully faired Fazer. Yamaha had a good formula and they made it better and better over time. I do like the idea of the R7. Comfortable package, reliable and strong engine and a racing feel without the insane powerband. The Fazer was THE mid weight naked for in the city from Yamaha so to see it come so far is a great thing. We all would of loved the idea of an R7 a redo of the infamous 750 racer but in today's world where regulations etc are effecting the industry it's gonna be harder to make those hooligan bikes we love so much. What Yamaha delivered us was a package perfectly suitable for most riders today. I do love it. Personally I still prefer the proper old sports bikes and when I get a big bike it's gotta be a 600rr or F4i. But the R7 seems ideal for an everyday bike. Good bike. And as always budget Statham delivers a great review 👌🏽🏍️💨

    Just rode home on a RSV660 after dropping my V4 1100 Tuono Factory off for a service - 660 does not have a 675 top end rush, it’s quite spartan and paint is... - but it does have a blipper, a little bit of a top end rush, you sit right in the bike, it turns really well and you can have some fun at semi legal road speeds/front pops up easily. Can really see the point in these bikes - but would I love it like my old 675r or a 250 2-stroke - no.

    Proper bike for today. Commuter friendly and will silence a few egos at a track day too. Anyone that thinks 72hp isn't enough hasn't spent a day on a 60hp 400 and got home shaking like a hostage! Plus, these middle weights won't have you hunting the best credit card APR's to pay fines or have you telling fibs to the boss about why you can't drive the company car for the next 3\6\12 months, let alone worrying about getting humped dry by your cell mate.

      Probably good fun on a twisty road or on a very small track. But as soon as you hit a big gp track this bike will become boring.
      We need to stop validating mediocre performance for premium prices if we want accessible motorcycling to survive. The old expression "its all you need for the road" is another way of saying: satisfy yourself with less power. If this was the case, why are we not all riding around on R3s and duke 390s?
      99.999% of people wont be able to get even a 400cc supersport around a track as fast as marquez. Does that mean no one should be allowed to upgrade to a more powerful bike? No it doesnt.
      There is just no getting away from the fact that you are paying almost 10 000€ for a bike with 70hp. You used to be able to get a zx6r which has Twice the power, better brakes, better chassis and better suspension for just a grand or two more. No matter which way you cut it the R7 is overpriced.

    • @Stratocasterhead51
      @Stratocasterhead51 2 года назад

      @@user-yi3ox8wy4k key word you used was “relatively”.
      Of course it is cheap compared to a 1000cc superbike.
      But its only a grand less than a street triple R for half the performance. And i dont doubt that it is a good bit of fun on a tight twisty track. But on a bigger track you have far better options for not much more cash.

    20 years ago I was in the market for a sport's bike, my local had a R7 OW02. Drop dead gorgeous, me n my gal were Haga fans too. "get a Yamaha France Bleu one" she said. As they were only red / white, no deal. A R6 was too small for me & R1 too much to insure. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, if only I bought the OW02, an expensive 750 with 600 showroom spec performance.
