  • Just as the new #yamaha #R7 hits the UK dealerships, BikeSocial's Michael Mann took the new bike for a spin on track in a UK exclusive by pitching it against its inspiration, the YZF-R6.
Two less cylinders and 44 less bhp but a £3799 lower price tag. Can it match the now track-only R6 on lap time and just how dynamic is that new chassis of the R7 in the twisty bits?

actually it already kind of has a name that follows Yamaha naming scheme. the real name of the R7 is actually the MT-07R. just like the FZ6 turned in to FZ6R when it got the sportier fairings. also the FZ6R is kind of what the R7 is. a sport bike lookalike that ain't really a sport bike for people who don't want a real sport bike but want something that looks like one

I absolutley get the comments regarding the on paper lack of performance of the R7. However having ridden all sorts of poweful bikes, I dropped to an XSR700 back in 2016. I love it, a brilliant balance of fun, the biggest reason being that MT07 engine, its a gem. Far more fun than its figures would suggest. Maybe I have just got old and slow, but I couldnt believe how much fun 70 b.h.p could be.

Yep, im in the same boat. Had several 1000 ccs superbikes now and when i get onto my brothers Ninja 300 i have a ball. I noticed that given I'm an amateur rider even after 15 years riding, i have to really watch throttle inputs in corners and that ruins the fun a bit. My next bike will be smaller. I was really hoping the new tuono 660 would also be a v4 but alas.

I've had a couple R1s, a couple MT10s, a couple R6s, among other sport bikes... got a R7 on order. Looks like a perfect bike for the streets of my region of the country. Not something I would pick for the open, dry, smooth, and fast roads of the South Western States of the US, I would go with an R1 for that. But where I live it is hilly, twisty, lots of rain, the roads are rough, and lots of vegetation next to the road... which if full of animals that jump out. And lots of LEOs. R7s looks like a good fit.

Yeah the R7 was a smidge faster around such a tight track where the R6 could not really stretch it legs. Unless you live by the Tail of the Dragon the R6 and other 600-class race replicas are absolute trash street-bikes. The utter lack of torque only makes things entertaining at extralegal speeds and that's no way to live. I forsee the R7 being far, far superior as a middleweight sportbike for the masses instead of a zillion-RPM machine that feels lethargic as a scooter until triple digits.

It is interesting because the r7 is basically a linear jump in price/performance from the R3. The problem being they should have moved the line further. 75hp isn’t bad but it’s only 33hp ahead of the r3. I agree with others they should have went with an R9 or something of a larger twin since they already breached the 600cc insurance line. Insurance is bananas compared to the R3, with the R7 being over $1k a year with full coverage you might as well spend the extra and get a liter bike.

yeah the R7 is just useless as a R7 bike. it's not a real sport bike and not a real R bike. it's a MT-07R for people who whant to look like they like sport bikes but in reality ain't about that life. i just find the R7 cringe. it misses the point of what a sport bike should be and is rather just a naked bike with sport fairings. it's it's name that ruin it the most. if it was just named MT-07R it would have ben a wonderful bike but because it's named R7 and people believe they are in the same class as other R bikes just makes it cringe. if it was named MT-07R then people would think of it as a naked bike with more sporty fairings for less wind problems. point is that there is no reason to get the R7 as a sport bike because if you want something cheap like 2-5year old used bike. if you think they bike is to much for you and you want to take it easy att first? get a naked or get a smaller sport bike to begin with.

@@BySixa was hard to find decently put together reviews of the cb650r. Yammy noob kinda glossed over it until he took it to the track and really opened her up, then he loved the bike.
In the end I think most other bikes in the 650/700 class would be excellent for darting around the inner city/twisties, and I have zero complaints with the cb650r in that regards. But I also put a lot of highway miles to get to the twisties and in TX if I’m not doing 85 on the highway I’m gonna be roadkill. Hence the desire for something with a bit more top end than a parallel twin.
Best way to describe riding the cb650r is there’s a little flat spot in the power band at about 6k rpm. Below 6k it’s quite torquey, not a torque monster, but plenty of torque to dart around and have fun. About 6300 rpm it’s all HP and when slamming through the gears I never drop out of that go juice.
At some point I’m going to get an exhaust (kinda liking the quite, other bike is dump out exhaust and loud af) and get it flashed, which will remove the flat spot.
Edit: also keep in mind that more fun is relative to what you’re trying to do. In the words of yammy, I’m not tryin to ride “dank nooners” all day. I was after something quick, real world fast (don’t need to hit 90 in first gear), and agile. The cb650r/cbr650 delivers in all of those.
