- The caregiver of Alex Murdaugh’s mother took the stand and recalled conversations she had with the disgraced lawyer around the time his family was murdered. Shelley Smith testified the disbarred South Carolina attorney told her he was at his mother’s house for 30-40 minutes the night his wife and son were killed. Smith claims Murdaugh was at his mother’s, where she was, for about 15-20 minutes.

This poor witness looks terrified. I am sorry she is in this situation.
I mean he did lowkey just commit heinous crimes, probably has a fuckload of $$$ on a off shore account to put a hit on her . Once he gets to prison.
It is a very bad and very sad situation to so many people. You can see her heart breaking. I pray she finds some peace.

I agree. She's looks absolutely terrified... I would be too, there's a chance he will walk free. I would be terrified to testify against him. Look at all the people around him who are dead. She's brave.
She is clearly nervous and afraid to say what she is saying.

Well said. My mum works in a care home. Even in her spare time on Christmas Day, she made visits to elderly dementia sufferers who live alone to give out love and hugs. She’s a hero to me, yes. 💜

This attorney needs a hearing aid. All of us could understand and hear every answer she gave. She did a remarkable job testifying as it appeared extremely difficult. Prayers going out for her.

Also, you have to live in the south to understand how these attorneys have a style of building up to a critical point. Part of that is asking someone to repeat. It's to double down on the accused.

It’s normal for an attorney to ask a witness to repeat to get the point across.
But he needs to make sure the jury hears her.thatscwhy he moves in there direction. The sound is not usually good in old courtrooms. We are watching on t.v.
The prosecutor did a terrible job and made this testimony harder than it had to be. The moving around really bothered me, too, and he asked her to repeat too many times. It will look good in the written record but in real time it was awkward and poorly done by the lawyer.
It was very irritating to watch the prosecutor and I don't think he was very polite or pleasant. Also, he should have offered her a tissue for heaven's sake.
He asked her to lie about timeline, offered her $$$ for her wedding and reminded her about his connection with principle at school. Seems like bribery to me.

This poor woman. She looks tortured. She never imagined she’d be at the center of a horrific murder trial and having to testify in front of a loaded courtroom watching her and millions of media viewers. She was plucked out of her quiet life of service and forced into the spotlight. God bless her! She may never recover from this nightmare.
I really feel for Shelley.. This is clearly hard for her & I think Alex gives her the creeps & it was disgraceful of him to use her for an alibi..She showed a lot of courage on that stand.. Thank You!

It feels like she does not feel safe to say out loud in court, the overwhelming feeling that she was threatened or physically harmed during the demand by Alex for an alibi. She would have known about the other staff member who ‘fell down some steps to her death’ at another of the family’s properties, not only effectively silencing that staff member who knows stuff but generating an income source at the same time by stealing the (very recently signed up) life insurance from her sons.

She’s obviously very honest. And hardworking. The honesty came through when it was clear that although she loved the Murdaughs she agreed to testify for the prosecution because she knows it’s the right thing to do. That’s honesty. And didn’t fall for it when he tried buying her off with money and favors.

@@cindybates68 being subpoenaed only means you have to show up. They can’t force you to say anything and it amazes me how many people don’t know this. How do people not know about the 5th amendment
@@zanerollins3394 With a few limited exceptions, a court actually can compel a witness to respond to testify and answer questions, although they can't be directed exactly how to respond. The subpoena will state exactly what kind of testimony is needed. If a witness does not cooperate to the satisfaction of the court, they can be held in contempt. The 5th amendment applies to self incrimination, and the witness is not the one accused of a crime here, so there would be no good reason to plead the fifth.
Furthermore, a jury has broad discretion to make judgements of witness credibility based on basically anything. If a witness is combative and trying to avoid answering questions, the jury can and will take note of that.
100% that was what I got from this too. I think there's more to this story than what the prosecution is outlining, but this witness was honest & you could tell she has nothing but love for the family
I KNOW she toiled over this moment. I KNOW she had sleepless nights. I absolutely understand the struggles she went through to stand up for truth and deny the temptation of the enemy. I think Ms. Smith was very nervous and frightened on the stand. Did anyone else notice how Alex made a veiled threat about her working at the school? He told her he knows the principal of that school.
Then asking about her wedding (which she had never discussed with him). He stated that Weddings are expensive......

They are expensive and even if he was sincere he is asking her to provide an alibi and he knows better than to ask that of anyone, a woman of color knows a powerful man like Murdoch if he'd kill his own son she can only imagine what he would do if this had been fifty years ago and it still scares her.

This is a incredibly damning testimony. Some of the most damaging testimony of the entire trial.
Poor woman. She was very uncomfortable giving evidence wasn't she. Not everyone likes to be the centre of attention, especially with such a large crowd.

I feel so bad for this poor woman as she appears to be so scared. I fully understand because I have worked for a powerful attorney and know just how intimidating they can be. It would be terrifying to testify against him, especially with him having such powerful contacts within the community. I thought same thing. He was a confusing questioner, example: "did he come back that night, she'd respond No , then he'd say I mean the next morning,". He should have been more precise. He did it over & over. "What happened later" instead of " after he left, when did you see him again."

They also need to make it clear (unambiguously clear) for the sake of the jury and especially the stenographer (courtroom scribe) because every word said by every witness will be gone over with a fine toothed comb for weeks and years afterwards.
The witness was mildly horrified. In the end, the woman survived the pressure in moderation. The defense tried to make the woman a bad witness.
That woman seems so pure and authentic. This will haunt her forever. I hope she has a lot of support going forward. It looks like AM has a lot of victims in one form or another.
This man is a calculated monster. I could never kill my child or spouse over money, no matter how much prison time I had to do. This is sick.

@Madison I just watched Murdaugh Murders deadly dynasty on Amazon … and what an awful family. Paul was cutting up pet squirrels at age of five … prolly pushed his housekeeper down their steps .. She was struggling because the Murdaugh are evil people, that rule a small town. Despite the fall of Alex he still has powerful friends that can make her life miserable. That's why she called her brother out of fear. Her fiancé probably became fearful & that's why the wedding didn't happen!

This poor woman's anxiety and fear is palpable. I don't blame her and I think her bravery is commendable. To be in such a highly stressful situation and still do the right thing even though you have to put yourself further into such an uncomfortable situation shows this woman's courage and honesty far outweigh's her fear. This woman can sleep easy tonight knowing she has done the rightful thing.......not sure Alex can....well maybe he can!
