- Welcome to TheDIYtuners the channel where we modify cars with our own hands.
On this video i'm giving my own RX7 some love by painting the wheels a colour i've wanted to use for ages BRONZE.
Hopefully i can help you with any tips and show you it can be a cheap but still professional looking job you can do yourself at home.
Don't be put off by the tools i used, you can achieve the same results by sanding the wheels by hand and spraying them with a rattle can.
Here are the links to the products i used.

Beautiful wheel color. I used to be all about black wheels, but they tend to hide the wheel design too much. Bronze strikes the best balance between a darker wheel that still stands out.
Thats exactly where in at rn
Contrasts well with the white paint.
Yes. I don't know why blacked out rims ever became a thing. Nice wheels shouldn't be hidden and they add so much to the look of a car.
The color is perfect. When is the nightmare of black wheels going to be over!!!
That colour is absolutely spot on
This colour is gorgeous 👌
Ace colour, great work 👍
Great job, looks terrific! Love the old Z car, had 3 of them myself!
Awesome job! Well done!!
Looks awesome
Thissss is exactly what I want my color wheels to look❤
Yes!! 😍
Beautiful color man
I just picked up a set of Avid wheels that sadly have a bit of light curb rash. I was hoping to have them powder coated but the shops around here want 600 to 800 to do it. This is my second option and plus I will have the satisfaction of doing it myself. Great color, awesome cars. Thanks for the video.
Best colour and best method thanks man
Your welcome bro 👌
The 280 is sweet. The wheels turned out amazing. Love the black inside and bronze face. Look great on the white car. Excellent job
Thanks mate 👌
You think of bronze or gold can go with grey cars ?
Very nice look
Looks mint, and a great job!!
Thanks man 🤙
Exactly what I was looking for. Definitely will be throwing on a coat of black first like you did to darken it up. Looks fantastic. Thank you for up loading.
Glad you found it useful. I think the black base really sets it off 👌
Fantastic
Damn bro. That's sick. Thinking about spicing things up on a b5 blue charger, know that's more daring than on a white car.
Hella badass bro the bronze make the brake calipers pop also 💪💪💪
Good job mate 👍
Thanks mate
Love that colour man. I might have to steal it for the Honda wheels as they need a refurb 👍
Do it mate its a great colour for wheels
Very very nice
1: It looks very good .
2: I think bronze is the new black.
Amazing job - well done bud 😎
Thanks mate 👌
@@TheDIYTuners I'm a complete noob with no spray gun - your thoughts/experiences on using spray cans (manual prep not am issue). Thx
@@xxcxpl I've used cans plently of times you just never get quite as good of a finish but plently good enough for wheels. Just works out a tad more expensive for the material in cans rather than a tin of paint. I would go to a professional paint shop for your cans rather than generic shop/ebay as they always tend to spray better
Bad ass. Literally looking to paint new (used) black wheels gold/bronze and was wondering if I should leave barrel black or try to paint that gold/bronze also...love leaving it black! Thanks. Now I'm motivated.
Thanks glad this videos helped you out 👌
Saw that your on the metro I’m now subscribed as a metro owner lyn x
Thanks. Be a while before we get onto the metro as the datsun is first but it will be coming 👌
Looks great!
Mate them wheels look mega in bronze set's the car off nicely
Thanks mate 👌
Your rx7 is my dream car 😂
Love this colour, wanting to spray our 535 alloys this colour. Do you have a colour code for this?
Nope company won't release a colour code for me 😢
Hey! It looks gorgeous! May i have the exact color code please?
Quick question, I don’t want to ruin the stock color of my 370z rays just in case I decide to sell them but I really want them this color.. should I just go for it and powder coat them or use plastidip? I’m leaning towards plastidip but I’ve had bad experience with it peeling back and not coming off right on a set of wheels I got for free.
Personally if I had a set of rays I wouldn't touch them if they are in good condition. Saying that this bronze is close to the rays colour but not exact. And Im not a fan of the finish that plastic dip gives 👍
I have a white 350z, I think ima go with this
Do it i think it looks good against white
@@TheDIYTuners how bt sky blue car??
how many card decks did you need for one wheel?
if you had the bronze finish painted on alone would it have been a brighter look?
i could have gone with another coat on these to get a little brighter but wanted to keep with the shadow type effect
Any chance you can run through the compressor setup?
Nothing special. Just an old Ingersollrand and only run an inline filter at the gun
Ever think about using index cards? There be about a hundred of them in a box and really cheap
Hey, can i know how much paint do i need for set of wheels, including painting the back as well, thanks 😀
I rekon you could get away with 500ml of black mixed and 250ml of the bronze
would you recommend taping over the black barrel end of the wheel when spraying the front of the wheel bronze? I would think one can get over spray on the inside of the wheel , great gun control by the way.
Thanks. I personally left it open as I didnt want a harsh transition from bronze to black. This way it's much softer
@@TheDIYTuners thanks for the info!Bought paint today , let's see how it goes this weekend.
@@davidmunoz804 how did you go
that z though
Muy guapas...me podrías decir el código de color gracias.
Looks great. How much bronze paint and clear coat is necessary?
I think I only got 1litre of the bronze ready mixed up so only 500ml of colour and 500ml thinners. And probably the same in clear
will changing the tires not damage the wheels ?
Depends who fits the tyres. Most shops have touchless machines now that shouldn't damage them
Now that it's been 3 years. How did the paint hold up to chipping, scratching, etc? Amazing job BTW! Strongly considering doing this.
I've got one chip but it's on the front which has a little stretch on the tyre and was quite a big stone hit it
@@TheDIYTuners sweet! Thanks for responding! This is very encouraging.
Hello everything is fine ? I had this bronze paint made, only in spray, and can I spray it with black paint ready to use? Or do I have to order it? If I apply black it won't give me a reaction?
What spray nozzle did you use
I think it had a 2mm nozzle on from memory: **Edit** just checked it was a 1.4mm 👍
Is the base coat a matt black?
It's just a base coat black so could be gloss or matte depending what lacquer you chose to use
What paint code youve use on those bronze paint. Planning to repaint my te37.
Don't have the code got the paint from ebay but send me a DM on instagram and I'll send you the link @thediytuners
Ahhhh forgot links in description also
May i ask how much paint was used when doing this ?
I'd say I mixed up around 250ml of black and 250ml of the bronze
Those came out beautiful 😍. What paint and color you went with? I know it says bronze but wonder how much of a difference is the gold paint instead of bronze.
This was called tommo bronze I don't have the paint code just bought it off ebay
Does it need clear coat or ready to use paint come with clear?
Yep it's 2 stage so clear coat required. I used a matt clear on this
@TheDIYTuners absolutely stunning 😍 well done
What color code did you use for the bronze paint
Company wouldn't give me the code they just called it tommo bronze
Awesome vid 👍 How long does it take to blast each of the wheels?
The wheels look really good in bronze 😮
Gonna paint my original wheel on the Rx7 as I can't decide which ones I want 😆😆
Thanks mate. I would say each wheel had around 20 seconds of blasting maximum. Have to be quick so it doesn't take paint off and just gives it that rough finish
The DIY Tuners think I need to get one of those!! It’s such a pain flatting it all down😆👍😎
@@bignoisemotors3218 worth it 100% done 2 sets of wheels now and my engine bay must have saved me 10hrs + of sanding
Hey bro! Nice looking wheels, just curious what you did during the spraying process for the bronze, did you tape up the back where the black is, or is there a little bit of overspray from having nothing blocking the inner of the rim?
There's a little over spray but it just slowly fades out to black and works well in my opinion 👍
@@TheDIYTuners Nice Ill take your word for it, those wheels look great!
Thanks 👏
@@TheDIYTuners So glad I took your word, just finished painting my rays, oh my god you were 100% right it blends so well with the black and the over spray is just 👌🏽
Glad to hear it mate 👏
Would blue car suit this as it's paint on wheels?
I think so. Subarus always have a gold/bronze wheel on their blue cars
How much clear coat did you need?
I'd say 1/2 litre
Maybe a stupid question, but does it matter if the black is glossy or flat? What did you use ?
It's a 2k paint meaning it gets it's shine or flat from the lacquer that's applied afterwards
Do you know the paint code i wanna get this made up for my wheels
So they wouldn't give me the code but if you ebay tommo bronze depending what country your in it should come up
I want to change my black rims to bronze, do I need black paint or just paint bronze straight?
You should be OK if the paints in decent condition just a good scuff up
@@TheDIYTuners wow that was quick, thank you I really appreciate.
Any advice for doing this over chrome wheels ?
Your going to want to get the things sand blasted as a minimum really even then it might not stick great, chrome is a pain to paint over
@@TheDIYTuners so some 80 grit sandpaper might not do it
It might work but would take days and would have to ensure you got into every crevise otherwise it will just peel. Then you will prob need to use a filler primer and flat back as 80 grit scratches will be visable through paint
What paints did you use?
It should be linked in the discription buddy 👌
How many litres of paint did you use?
I'd say about 250ml of bronze and 500ml of the black.
What’s the paint code for this I know it’s pre mix but I’m looking for the code
I have no idea dude. Spent ages trying to find the code but in the end just thought I would try this one
Hello there ,little help here..
Is this golden?

Hi. Fan of japanese cars here, mainly Mazda s and Mitsu :D I always wanted an RX7 but at the moment got some financial priorities and only run a 2015 Mazda 6 estate in red :D Is there any chance I could have a ride i this beauty even as a passenger? Willing to pay for your time and petrol :P I live North West London but can travel wherever needed in the UK :D Discovered your channel just now while looking how to paint wheels in bronze ( thinking for my Mazda mainly) and was so happy to see this being done on an RX7 :D Please reply. Cheers.
Hey man yh always happy to take people for a blast that have a passion for cars. I live a significant distance from London though and car rarely sees the road in these cold months but when summer comes around I attend a few shows etc
@@TheDIYTuners Thanks for replying. Yes, not ideal to take it on salty cold roads. I hope we stay in touch and chat around summer for a meet at one lf these car meets :D Meanwhile Im going to enjoy your channel:D

Also I’ll be in Walsall this Friday. I don’t know how far that is from you.
ear got a colour code for that pliz
I don't but depending where your from search tommo bronze on eBay should give you some results
What is the paint code used?
Wish I knew mate
Hi, do you know the color code of the rims?
I don't they seem to be very secretive with the code
@@TheDIYTuners thanks anyways, the rx7 looks awesome btw ✌🏼
Thanks mate 👍
What is the bronze color code ?
I have no idea mate. The paint company won't release the code
Can you please tell me the color code of that bronze?
Not sure on the code dude as the company never provided it. You can get it from the link in the description if your UK or ask the company for the code
@@TheDIYTuners Thanks
Ryan did you ever get a paint code?
It looks nice but For me it looked goldish colour not bronze I don’t know is in my eyes 👀 But overall you’ve done a good job
They are close to a gold. Ithink the bronze comes across better in person rather than on camera
What's the color code?
No idea mate. Paint company will not relese it
Hey mate, I have a Mitsubishi Evo 9 and you have inspired me to repaint me wheels with colour she looks beautiful and sexy mate. Do you know what the colour code is?
No I don't have the code mate company wouldn't release it to me

How much bronze paint do you think u used for all 4 rims? @thediytuners
Think I bought a litre pre mixed and didn't use it all
