- This week I have been making fabric embellishments using scraps. I show how I make a free-motion flower colored with oil pastels. The second embellishment is a butterfly backed with felt. Enjoy!

So fun! Thanks, Julia, and have a wonderful holiday! 😃
Hi Cat, Thanks so much for watching! Merry Christmas!
I had no idea that oil pastels were water soluble! I’m getting out my old set and trying this! Thanks for a new, fun idea 🙂!!
HI, I am using a water-soluble oil pastel. They are a student grade by the brand Portfolio. They are not market for fabric but I have tested them by washing a project and had good results. I only used 100% cotton fabric in a light color. I don't think they would work on darker fabric. Also I always heat set with an iron. This really helps push the color into the fibers. It's fun experimenting with art supplies on fabric. Thanks for watching, Julia

Thanks for your reply! I went ahead and tried my old oil pastels with the GAC 900 and they blended just fine! Set with heat under parchment paper - worked great!
Gorgeous
Thank you!
What a pleasure to watch you!
Thank you!
Never thought of making my own fabric embellishments. I'm a quilter so I have lots of scraps. Great video.

Merry Christmas to you Brenda!
Just now seeing this! Oh my, I have alot of that pre-quilted cream fabric I got for something else & haven't cut into it yet 🤣🤣 I love how that little lace really does look like the body of the butterfly 💗💗
I love working with the pre-quilted cream fabric. It has the body I need and color takes well. Hope you give it a try! Julia
I am a quilter but I am also a junk Journal artist and these would be beautiful in my journals. I have lots of butterflies but these flowers are just lovely and I think I will try to make some. Thank you for sharing

Thank you! 😊
I have had some oil pastels for decades (?) and never knew you could use water with them to give them that watercolor effect. Thank you!!!

You make free motion look so easy I am still trying to learn it...
Keep practicing! It's so worth it...
What is a big shot? Thanks, great tutorial. So creative!
A BigShot by Sizzix is a die cutting machine that cuts shapes. Joann Fabrics and other craft stores sell it.
😍🙏
Love your embellishments, what kind of sewing foot are you using & can I use it on a normal machine or does it have to be a embroidery machine?
Hi and thank you for sharing this project. But I had a question.....how can you iron on felt? I did it once and it singed!...Love your idea....thank you. God Bless
Some felt is made of synthetic fibers and needs a cooler iron. A press cloth may help. There is also wool felt that can handle more heat. Hope this helps.
Your free motion always looks so perfect Julia - does your machine have controlled stitching?
Hi, no it does not. Just lots of practice- lol😊
How lovely... spring in december makes my heart jump. May I ask what kind of crayons you use?
Hi, I am using the Portfolio oil pastels. They are a student grade and quite inexpensive. Here is an Amazon link: amzn.to/3v6tLEb

LOVE your flowers! What will you do with these embellishments?
HI, I love adding these to my projects. Bags, pouches, pillows, etc. I also glue them onto handmade cards. Thanks so much for watching, Julia
Thank you for sharing. I was wondering about the fabric with the words. Where do you buy?
HI. I always shop for fabric with words when I am at different fabric shops. I keep it in my stash for different projects. You can also run fabric through your printer and print phrases. I also stamp words using Archival Ink (permanent and colorfast).
Love these!! What sewing machine do you use? Tia!
Hi, I am using a Janome Memory Craft 8200. You can free-motion stitch with most machines. Thanks for watching, Julia
🤩😍💖💫💥🙏🏻
After you heat set will these really survive washing? I looked them up and they don’t seem to be permanent. I want to embellish clothes
Hi, Here's a video where I've tested different supplies on fabric and then washed it through the washing machine. ruclips.net/video/URT9YWjEqe8/видео.html
I had good results. I recommend doing your own tests. Different fiber contents may make a difference. I used only cotton. Also these are not opaque. If you are adding color to a darker fabric you may have to use something else.
Is your black thread …just a standard ? It always looks heavy..easy to see. TY
HI, it is a regular all purpose thread from Coats and Clark. Nothing special. I do use a black bobbin thread in the bobbin which is thinner.
Bonjour comme je ne comprends pas tout, est ce que ce sont des pastels à l'huile et est ce qu'on pourra laver la création ensuite sans faire partir les couleurs? Merci de votre réponse 😉
What weight thread are you using?
HI, I am using an all purpose Coats and Clark thread.
How does the water activate oil pastels? I didn't think that would work.🤷😊
Hi, I am using water soluble oil pastels. The brand is Portfolio. They are student grade and inexpensive- less than $10 for a 24 set. I heat set with my iron and have good results with washing. You may want to experiment if you are using them on something precious. Thanks for watching! Julia
Can I use water soluble WAX pastel set? Would the medium be better than water since the water tended to spread beyond flower petals? Thank you , love your work! Still practicing FMQ tho!
What is the name of the paint you used for the flowers
Hi, I am using Portfolio Oil Pastels. Here is a link: amzn.to/3C2MLHA These are not marketed for fabric but I've tested and washed on fabric in this video:ruclips.net/video/URT9YWjEqe8/видео.html Thanks for watching, Julia
I find this to be really difficult, I am just learning, maybe it will take time to practice
It takes practice but is so worthwhile once you get the hang of it. Keep it going!
There pencils are special to fabrics? I don't understand beacous i dont speak english well. Hello from Poland
Hi, No these pencils are not specific to fabric. They are oil pastels- an inexpensive set. I previously tested them on fabric and had good results. They are permanent, no problems with washing. Thanks so much for watching! Julia
@@stitchesbyjulia Thank you 😀
D
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THEM ? THEY AREN’T WASHABLE, THE EDGES FRAY AND THE COLORS WILL RUN.
I’ve tested this product on fabric and washed in the washing machine. I use cotton fibers and heat set with iron. The colors did not run. These are raw edge embellishments and yes the edges will fray. I love the look but I realize not everyone likes the distressed look.
I also love adding them to handmade cards.
