The Mansions in both also burnt down. Likewise within a few minuttes I was asking 'Rebbeca'? But after the first Rebbecesque flavours it changed and clearly wasn't Rebbeca. How about the title 'The Second Woman' as a key feature of Rebbeca was Rebbeca, Mrs D'Winter's was the Second Mrs D'Winter's. Both the first wives were killed in suspicious circumstances which are only revealed later in the story.

I just saw that movie yesterday for the first time, I can see why it's one of your favorites. Morris Carnovsky has quite the screen presence. Interesting that he mentioned "recurring bouts of depression" when he conversed with the Robert Young character on the train. Sadly, Robert Young suffered from depression for much of his life. BTW, that wouldn't be Burlington VT would it?

A great character actor. He was blacklisted because he refused to cave into the McCarthyites. He returned to Broadway and eventually was accepted again in Hollywood.

I can see why people reference Rebecca - the deceased fiancée, the waves crashing on the rocks, the beautiful empty house on the headland, Florence Bates etc. - but it isn't psychologically like Rebecca at all. It's a different genre of story and the male and female leads are different characters and their roles reversed. You can imagine how utterly fantastic this movie would have been, directed by Hitchcock. But it's still a goodie. I didn't guess whodunnit until shortly before it was revealed and even then I didn't see the final plot twist coming.
