A newly-elected district attorney is kidnapped just before he takes office by the town's crooked political boss with the intention of replacing him with an ex-convict who is his exact double! Outstanding supporting cast with Charles McGraw, Jeff Chandler, and James Arness ! Кино
I love these films! Its so nice to see real talent and real bodies and films without blood and guts..damn I wish it was still the 1950s or at least how people and places used to be then
ME TOO!
and all the women had class and were elegant and charming
Grew up in the 50's and it was heaven compared to today's Woke culture. People had self respect, dressed decently, and Saturday morning "Kid Shows" were fantastic.
Loved the line, "This kid doesn't like music.I don't think Ace will sing."
Peggy Knudsen (1923 - 1980) After appearing on Broadway, Peggy started her film career auspiciously appearing in A Stolen Life in 1946 opposite Bette Davis although it was not really a major film. In the late 1940s, she had bit parts in several films including The Big Sleep (1946) which was a huge hit starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall and Humoresque (also 1946) with Joan Crawford which was another big success. She then ventured into comedy as her career had not taken off despite being in major pictures with big stars. Her last movie was Istanbul (1957). This 1947 film was a cheap B grade film noir featuring an early performance before he became famous of Jeff Chandler (1918 - 1961). She also had radio and TV work appearing in big shows such as Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Tombstone Territory. She retired from acting in 1965 after appearing in an episode of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. In her later years she suffered from crippling arthritis and was cared for by her close friend the actress Jennifer Jones (1919 - 2009) who had a far more stellar career including winning an Oscar and a Golden Globe both for Best Actress in The Song Of Bernadette in 1943.
I so love you for this comment. You showed us something of Jennifer Jones I never knew...though I've always loved her. 🌹
Thanks so much!
She could get it back in the day
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
That was a clever and great story the plot and acting was brilliant ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I got a kick out of the police captain getting his orders from his wife; a grocery list, etc ..funny 🤣
It was really nice to see James Arness (Gunsmoke), and Jeff Chandler in early minor roles. Thanks for the flick.
Only a little over an hour long but I enjoyed this late 40's crime drama VERY much ! The plot had more twists & turns than a pretzel ! Thank you VERY much for uploading for us to enjoy ! CHEERS !! 🙂
Like it ALREADY!! Classic beginning line "No matter how you slice it, she cant be any deader"!!
That was more enjoyable than expected; good story, good twists, fast paced and easy to follow.
Fast paced? There must not be a love interest. I think ill watch it then.
@@alphaomega8373 I just skipped through it but don't remember it. Three years ago . . . I probably watch too many of them. But I love the ending.
Interesting plot twist going on, a good film and so nice to see Peggy Knudsen and Patricia Knight along with Jeff Chandler and James Arness
Wow, what a movie! I really enjoyed it! I've never see one like it, and the ending was a surprise too. Thank you for this!!
Uncommon straight role for Charles Lane as the former "ambulance chasing." attorney now graduated to representing the mob. Almost 400 film/tv credits dying in '07 at age 102!
Thin people seem to live long....
That guy showed up in every great 60's Sitcom ever...
@@hertzair1186 all the dozen 100+yr old patients in only a few Nx homes were fat fatter & fattiest...there was a lady was a whooping OVER 200LBS & always won scratch offs in Queens , NYC....
Am happy to strongly ecommend this fast paced thriller. February, 2023.
A good plot, pacing, and a good primary and supportive cast. As mentioned below, Jeff Chandler and James Arness both had supportive roles in this drama - they both did very well. Jeff Chandler was also a versatile radio actor with roles as diverse as detective Michael Shayne and Mr. Boynton in "Our Miss Brooks."
Thanks, I never saw this one. I really liked the characters and of course the cars. I had a 1941 Ford business coupe and the old man always had Buicks like that '47 black sedan. Love all your posts. Keep 'em coming.
These old movies are a Hoot~!!!! Did every human being smoke back then??? Thanks for the opportunity to watch it!
Rickarama Trama
they all just wanted to be popular.
end up dying years later of cancer.
don't follow the crowd.
what a pack of smokes cost back then?
@PizzaFlix, THANK YOU! What a charming movie! Your films make lockdown much easier to tolerate!
Thanks for watching PizzaFLIX
Nice to goe back in time when life and people were Great You could walk the Streets and not lock your doors.People looked out for each other 🎥😊👍👍👍👍
Man! Gosh what an excellent film. Watching at after 3:00 am in the morning. Perfect for watching these old films. Perfect plots. More than one here. Handsome men. I recognized quite a few of the men from later years. There was Arness of course and did anyone notice Bonanza sherrif Coffee.
william alderman
that's who he is.
it's great seeing their faces in their early career.
Me too, I'm watching at 3:00 a.m., I'll watch the movie again when I'm more alert.
Indeed ! This good low budget crime drama is filled to overflowing with familiar faces !
Great Selection, great seeing Jeff Chandler and James Arness in early roles.
And in addition to Chandler and Arness, there was the guy who had a recurring role on "Petticoat Junction". He played the bad guy who always tried to close the Cannon Ball down. I think his name was Biggilow.
Homer Bedloe
That's it . Well done Janet.
tall guy @ 54:40 was James ? no kiddin !
and I watched every gunsmoke ever made !?
Charles McGraw was in that movie too you failed to mention him.
James is credited as James Aurness, his original family spelling. It became Arness later and during his GUNSMOKE run of 20 years. His brother, also an Aurness, took the stage name of Peter Graves.
@Roger Smith Get out of Dodge or you're going to jail!
@@mstrunn I played Dodge City twice with the Hubert Castle Circus. Believe me, there is nothing from GUNSMOKE to see, and what is there is so hoked up it is gravely disappointing to those who travel there hoping to find exciting history. Worse, there is nothing else, either, for hundreds of miles in all directions. Any other vacation plan is better.
Thank you for that information. I always appreciate when someone shares some obscure information like that.
Was that Peter Graves who starred in TV Mission Impossible - [I guess I could do a search but thought I would ask you. I really enjoyed watching Gunsmoke in my youth,]
@@15thstreet60 Yes, that was Peter Graves. I always thought he was so handsome. James Arness too.
glad james arness went on to play the THING. great move. u could tell he had the right stuff.
pizzafix, i've been with ya for a long time. movies are serious to u. thanks for being serious. ur doing a good thing here.
I'm a big Peggy Knudsen fan. Thank you! (HA! I just saw Joe Sawyer play a cop in 'A Double Life' earlier today.)
Thanks so much for posting this movie! I really enjoyed it.
Really enjoyable. Fun cast. Love the clothes and cars. Thank you so much.
ME TOO!
Excellent noir film, with atmosphere. Thank You for posting this gem...!!
Got to love the excellent character actor Douglas ('Doug' in this one) Fowley, who always played strong characters in everything form Sam Katzman serials to Academy award winning Blockbusters. Joe Sawyer always reminded me of the cartoon character "Buzz" Sawyer (it's the nose).
"says he got a rough shuffle"-classic line!
The scene with Charles Lane talking to the boss in the wheelchair reminds me of the scene in It's a Wonderful Life where he talks to Potter about George Bailey.
Nice early film with the Distict Attorney actor quite similar looking to Robert Taylor. Thank you for posting.
I thought he looked like Clark Gable!
I love these oldies thank you for the upload
.."your prints are on everything but the ceiling!"
Quentin Tarantino and the Pure Cinema podcast brought me here.
we loved this, Thanks for posting! :D
Thankyou for posting. A good film.
I love Jeff Chandler's voice.
Xx
Look up Jeff Chandler in the Michael Shayne Mysteries on Archive.org - if you like the voice, you'll love the series...
Thankyou I will xx
Jeff Chandler played Mr. Boynton, the biology teacher, in OUR MISS BROOKS on CBS Radio.
Cheers xx
Those were fun days, when AM radio had imaginative entertainment. xx
Peggy Knudsen who played the reporter in later years was bedridden and her close friend Jennifer Jones took care of her.
Thanks for posting.
I heartily concur ! Talky but fun late 40's crime drama !
Great film. Subscribed! Thanks!
An enjoyable movie. Thanks a bunch!
Very good movie that will hold your interest throughout. Just one slip up that should have been corrected. The cop is taking a prisoner to the dentist and they get stopped by the bad guys, cop gets cuffed to the steering wheel and the prisoner is kidnapped. It happens in broad daylight in full sun, yet when the reporters ask what happened the cop says it was at 10:30 PM.
I SAID THE SAME THING.
no prisoners are never taken to a dentist at night.
he was trying to cover his butt.
he got what he deserved.
You have a good eye ! I've seen that in a lot of low budget movies. Night scenes that were clearly shot during the day (shadows & all !).
Good movie, thank you for uploading it.
"Sooner or later they all end up in (Jim Locke's) pocket ..or fish-tank..." 1947. The handing of a new broom to the new District Attorney in the opening frames of the film, (for those not aware, there is the saying. "A new broom sweeps clean.") highlights the power of pictures. Each picture being worth a thousand words, the old B&W Films represent and reflect the society in which we live in the 1940's then and as much today's. The fight against corruption is "ewig" - unending. Since the days of Aristotle and Plato nothing seems to have changed much, even with the advance of Technology. It would be extremely difficult to sweep the corruption, coersion and collaboration out of the electronic Matrix with a new broom, as of the old model. And the new model.... remains to be seen. - the subject of a newer, moderner Film? The idea of mixing the two genres, B&W with modern high tech using the slower, older text as fusion is tantalizing. Neuvo Tango. De gustibus disputandum
Slight misquotation - "De gustibus non est disputandum"
The dialogue is top shelf, its just a bit of a shame about the audio quality. I wonder if a remaster exists anywhere? Either way, thanks as always PizzaFlix, for being awesome
Thanks for a very enjoyable film. Hard bitten noir at its best.
Very good! So nice when the good guys were the recognized heroes.
Thank you great movie
Loved this thank you
Peter Hunt thanks for watching PizzaFLIX
Love this movie. It's one of my favorites
Great flick!! Had the production values been better this could be a Hit !!
Don Castle played his double very well. It wasn't an "edge on your seat" movie, but worth watching the crooks get caught who were working utilizing the "City Office" for their crooked deeds kept our interest and attention. Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue, but that strange kiss just wasn't true. Thank you, again, PizzaFlix.
Roses are Red, Violets are Blue and Gladioli are all sorts of colours!
Enjoyable film. It had two knockouts in Peggy Knudsen and Patricia Knight. Also early film appearances from Jeff Chandler and James Arness of Gunsmoke fame.
The cat and dog scenes are the best! Every time I see those segments I laugh so hard my sides hurt!
Yeah, what kind of dog was that?
"I'm as clean as the laundry!"Love it!
The smile of the old lady at the end was so cute
Her Scottish accent is umistakeable. That's Mary Gordon who played Mrs Hudson the landlady of Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and Watson (Nigel Bruce),during the years immediately before this film.
Much love pizzaflix! Getting me thru as ever, lockdown incl x
in 1955 Arness was Matt Dillon, in 1950 Chandler was Cochise
Look for a very young James Arness (- he's the tall blonde who plays Martha's brother- (trip to dentist) of Gunsmoke fame and Jeff Chandler.
In which Arness was credited as "Aurness" (the family name).
Sheriff Coffee from Bonanza was in there as well.
Kathy Curtiz
my two other favorite actors.
James was a very tall guy. look dif with the curly hair.
and was he working thanks for posting
great, slapstick right out the box. mother raised stiffs, eh? Oh! -- youre a riot!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Don't forget Joe Sawyer.. He was in so many movies, played the Gunny sergeant in sergeant york with Cooper.
And he played one of George Macready's henchmen in the 1946 classic "Gilda".
thanks!
I'm half way through this movie and have no idea what's going on. I'm out.
Danny Bowden Are you voting for Mayor Pete?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😖
You should have waited to fire up that fatty, until 1/2 way...............it got better.
nice
thanks for the upload
Nice little b/w film with a lot of snappy lines. 😊
26mins in after having some doubts-but stuck with it-due to comments...IT JUST GOT GOOOD!!!!! It ended too quickly for me 😟 felt there cud AV been more depth. But good movie (no annoying sounds/music.
Thanks for watching! May the Sauce be with you.
PizzaFlix 😀
They needed to cast someone like Arness--who was 6 foot 9 inches tall--to tower over Jeff Chandler at the end--who was 6 foot 4. The fill was full of old character actors: the ubiquitous Joe Sawyer as the crooked cop, for example. The crooked lawyer was Charles Lane, who lived to be 102 years old and was type-cast--in his own words--as "an old goat." Remember him as Mr. Drysdale's nemesis in a few Beverly Hillbillies episodes? Thank you for putting this on the Web. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Gosh! How did I get Drysdale wrong for Sheriff Coffee of Bonanza. Glad I read your tread.
Sad "After a traffic accident in 1966, Don Castle died of a medication overdose, aged 48." wikipedia
... it's been a while that a noir movie would get my attention. Great stuff 👍
"It's funny the junk a dame will carry around." 😅 We "dames" would beg to differ. 😂
This was a good movie., Although a few times I have to admit I was confused on who was really who
Entertaining enough. It's a 5/10 from me. 27 Jul 2023
The sauce is most certainly with me on this one.🍕🍕🍕🍕🥫🥫🏺
Cool. They should remake this movie. Only instead of kissing her husband, Mrs. Carney wants to surprise him by getting naked in the office. An awkward moment ensues.
Charles Mcgraw
"Carol... make some sandwiches"
A cool film!!!
In these old movies the occasional tidbit strikes me as more modern than I expected. For instance when the imposter tells the lawyer to "go chase an ambulance" and the shoulder pads on one of the dresses of the reporter at 27:00 looks straight out of the 80s.
Very Good Movie!!!
thank you
Identical strangers...popular plot device back then. I wonder if it ever happened in real life. I'm skeptical. Anyway, decent 40's programer.
Excellent ☺
GOOD SHOW
Did you notice James Arness starting about 55 min. ? His hair looked a lot lighter, but he was younger too. But there was no mistaking his voice...Matt Dillon..!!
Whoa! I'mm going back to look . Thanks.
excellent!
I like that fish tank in the wall
The backdoor dealings of the 1930s between business and politicians is the same today and far worse. Sometimes they say the quiet parts aloud… and sometimes entertainment is used to lull and dull us to these kinds of “should-be,” criminal-like activities.
Charles McGraw in a great fight scene in The Narrow Margin
OMG, James Arness looks so young...and he had to tilt his head to enter and leave the room!
Cyndi K he was 24 years old and this was 8 years before he played in gun smoke
Robert Mitchum and John Wayne suggested Arness for Gunsmoke, instead of either of them.
William Conrad was Matt Dillon on the radio; when the show went to TV, they shopped the role to Buddy Ebsen and Peter Graves (the 2 criteria were 'taller than everybody else' and 'resonant voice'). Graves was too busy at the time (making giant bug movies), and suggested they ask his brother James Arness, since Ebsen was tall enough, but lacked the authoritative ~Matt Dillon~ voice. The rest is TV history......
Had to laugh when James Arness called Jeff Chandler "shortie". Jeff C actually made everyone else look short by comparison. Got the feeling that may not have been exactly how the script read! :):). Enjoy these very old b and w movies. Thanks.
Young enough to be tall?! How do you enter and leave a room at the same time?! Walk in backwards like you were leaving!
In this movie roses are black and white
*THX* PizzaFlix for fun little tale.... While its aspects are more akin to 1930s style B Movie crime thrillers, this could have been plot-intensified with another 20+ minutes added to the storytelling script 'depth'.
Nice through..... albeit with not a whole lot to do with True Noir elements......
Reminds me of Clark Gable.
Patricia Knight was a knockout
She jumped off the screen. An incredible beauty.
Was she the wife of the imposter? I have rarely seen such beauty.
She was no Hope Emerson but Ms Knight was indeed one fetching lass !
Aren't all the DA's we know excellent fist fighters?
Chock full of classic charactor actors !
It really is ! Almost every face is familiar to anyone who watches a lot of vintage movies or TV shows !!
very good movie😎
Impressed by the terrific 1940's forensic research in the movie script: "No matter how you slice her, she couldn't be any more deader"
yup. Deader is a word--with more than one use. Google and you will see them. It is even the name of a movie. Then there is this,
'(figuratively, humorous) comparative form of dead: more dead; or at least more evidently dead.
He was deader than a dead dog's bone buried down a blind alley off a dead-end street in a ghost town. Man, he was dead.
Read more at www.yourdictionary.com/deader#4BDvvKEMUAqAdOEa.99
lol. brilliant.
You are right! But you couldn't be any more righter. Hahahahahahaha I just had to do it.
How about most deadest!!
:)
Nice
Entertaining
Good film.
Arness died his hair brown all those years on Gunsmoke.
Yes, Peter Graves, also a blonde was Arness' brother.
His hair wasn’t died,it was dyed.
THANKS4GIVING
