Hawkins is an American legal drama and murder mystery television series which aired for one season on CBS from 1973 and 1974. The series starred James Stewart as rural-bred lawyer Billy Jim Hawkins, who investigated the cases in which he was involved.
Billy Jim Hawkins had given up his position as a deputy district attorney and opened a small-town private law practice in the fictional town of Beauville, West Virginia. Despite the rural, small-town location of his law office, fancy clients from all over the United States come to him for a legal defense in murder cases. Hawkins has a pleasant, homespun manner and speaks slowly, but underneath this unassuming demeanor he is a shrewd and determined defense lawyer. He travels widely to investigate the cases he takes on, seeking evidence that will clear his clients and identify the real murderers. His cousin R. J. Hawkins travels with him and assists him in his investigations.

Indeed. A lot of people are unaware of this mid-70s prime time series since it only lasted one season & only aired on CBS every three weeks.

I remember "Fool's Parade" with Jimmy Stewart, Strother Martin, Kurt Russell & George Kennedy. Saw it at a local drive in as a teen when it first came out & later saw it a few times on TV. Though I haven't seen it shown on TV in a long time. Good film! And yes, I think I did read somewhere years ago that the original novel was written by Davis Grubb, whose best known novel was "The Night of the Hunter".

This movie is so intense, so real. Things said, felt and spoken that you just don't hear in today's movies and programs. I love the honesty and realism and humane expressions that the movies of the 70's did.

Mayf Nutter was later married to Lindsay Bloom, who played Mike Hammer's (Stacy Keach) secretary Velda in the 1984-86 season. Very interesting to see James Luisi NOT playing a villain!

Russell Metty, the Director of Photography, was well-known for his efficiency and his results. He could light a set more quickly than anyone in the movie business, giving directors much more time in the course of a working day, and allowing them much more freedom with their cameras. He won an Oscar for Spartacus in 1960, and was Emmy-nominated for the first two seasons of The Waltons. He also was Director of Photography for the initial Rich Man, Poor Man miniseries and helped make it a massive hit.

So very convoluted I didn't have a clue what was going on; everything was "filler & diversions" to confuse viewers.
A shameful way to treat viewers. 😣😠

Jimmy Stewart also had problems with the scripts.

@@RonaldCharlesEpstein Yes. I read online that he decided to end the series because of the low quality of the scripts. Low ratings too didn't help the situation.
