That Basie soundtrack with B & W for that grainy, gritty, hard-boiled flavor makes this detective series best of era. Marvin gets some decent scripts in this, now, the second season.
I catch these old shows whenever they turn up on YT, and it's interesting to compare this to Peter Gunn; filmed concurrently for the large part, hard-boiled writing, jazzy score (Mancini gave Gunn the edge there), M Squad was pretty intense in its own way (leaving it open to the much later parody of Police Squad)...can't get enough of either series.
He also fought in the Marshall Islands campaign. That's where he saw the majority of his combat. He was badly wounded on Saipan in the opening days of that campaign. RIP PFC Lee Marvin, USMC. You still have many, many fans.
I like Dragnet, but I know every single episode, including the later one (1967-1970) as well as the radio Shows. M squad is newer to me, I've seen season one, but not the others.
Interesting. Not a lot of cops in the fifties took a shooting stance with both hands on the gun, or at least used both hands to control it. Lee Marvin was ex-military but I don't know if that's where he picked it up. I've seen WWII training videos of soldiers shooting the 1911 pistol one handed so maybe not.
I like seeing a young vibrant Lee Marvin. I've seen most of his movies and he's always amazing. The last movie he was in was The Delta Force with a prime Chuck Norris. He looked extremely sickly in that movie. He was out of breath and frail. It looked like he was in pain to just stand around and move. He smoked like 2 packs a day minimum. Probably close to 50 years. I'm telling you those cancer sticks are poison. I think guys like Charles Bronson realized smoking is bad and basically dedicated his life to health and fitness that's why he still looked great in his older age. Also lived to be like 85 or something.
23:59 - this is the moment that was captured as the thumbnail image for the video. He has a very unorthodox way of looking down the sight of his pistol when he shoots. He shoots right-handed, and uses his right eye to look down the gun, which is proper. But he turns his head to the right so that his right eye is off to the side, and his squinted left eye has the predominant position, which is weird. Turning his head to the right like this pushes the bridge of his nose, and his furrowed brow due to squinting, into the line of sight he needs for his right eye, to line up the sights on his gun and aim. Seems like that would intrude onto his scope of vision......
Typical move move by Mayor Daley. He and his crew were as crooked as they come..BTW, ex Rat Packer from Oceans Eleven, Richard Benedict, had a small part in this episode.
Crime show in competition with Peter Gunn at the time. Both shows had music interludes, but in this show the combo music was faked. In Peter Gunn, the musicians actually played live.
Reminds me of another crime show earlier than this called I'm The Law. The hero is also a police lieutenant who never always has backup or even a partner sidekick around when busting crooks.
he was co-owner of the show. In a 1958 interview, he said he was looking forward to the residuals. I'm not sure how much rerun action this series got, but at least he was thinking like a businessman.
The world is filled with these Grace types, who fall hard for these smooth talking hoods. She wouldn't fall for someone working in Home Depot or Walmart though.
I don`t like the background music during the coffee scene 18:00. I remember they used to play that kind of music in department stores when I was a kid in the 70s. It was just noise really. Very annoying.

The late 50's and early 60's was my favorite era.
Indubidubly 🙂
High point of human achievement in everything. Music, film, cars, ladies, everything.
Thanks for posting this Lee Marvin is my favorite actor of all time. He had tremendous screen presence.
Gotta love this show. Thanks for posting this.
I love Lee Marvin!
Same ❤
Original music track, Count Basie & Orchestra.
Great show. Great star!
Think I see the inspiration for the intro to "Police Squad."
Yep.
Almost a direct copy! 🙂
Man The whole Police Squad episode was a direct ripoff of this one. Half the time I was hearing the narration in Leslie Nielson's voice in my head...
"Who are you? And how did you get in here?" Drebbin: "I'm a locksmith, and I'm a locksmith."
Music by John Williams - Star Wars Jaws - Indiana Jones - etc etc etc etc etc etc etc ...
Great show with good writing and a quick pace.
13:00 wish there was a black and white channel of old shows on tv
There are two or three where these kinds of shows are shown incessantly.
Try Tubi and MeTV.
Great series!!
I want that 57 Ford Lee’s driving
That's all we ever see in this series is full size '57 Fords!
Even after is stops , it keeps moving .
one of the better episodes.
it's difficult to get a show like this to work in a half hour format.
Excellent.
Lee Marvin was a war hero. He was a Marine , 1942-1945 , battle of Saipan.
He also fought in the Marshall Islands campaign. That's where he saw the majority of his combat. He was badly wounded on Saipan in the opening days of that campaign. RIP PFC Lee Marvin, USMC. You still have many, many fans.
4th Marine Division
Listening to Lee Marvin and Broderick ('Highway Patrol') Crawford's voices; I'd say they were the inspiration for 'Officer McGruff'.
More action than Dragnet
I like Dragnet, but I know every single episode, including the later one (1967-1970) as well as the radio Shows. M squad is newer to me, I've seen season one, but not the others.
Dragnet was a snoozer hoping to instill learning in the public. That didn't work as we now have WOKE. Wake up America.
I agree. Too much talk on Dragnet.
The opening credit music is very reminiscent to the opening music to Police Squad with Leslie Nielsen.
Good show wish it was on now to watch Bruce 7:59
Gotta love the double tire squeal/skids that are exactly the same in the opening. Efx guy must have been paid per effect.
😃Thank you 👍
The only thing missing from that loot bag was a big $ on the outside.
Bring this show back to tv Bruce 10:15
Monica Lewis was a Jazz singer. She was also the voice of Chiquita Banana in those commercials.

Police revolvers were notoriously inaccurate even with two hands.
Music, performing arts and most other things MUCH better in those days than the 21st. Century crap we have now!!😮😢

Can't be easy to go down that ladder with a suitcase in one hand...

ERNEST CHAPPELL: "PALL MALL FAMOUS CIGARETTES present....."
Life was much better back then.
@@petervitti9 Except for the deadly chain-smoking⚰😂
you can hear that police squd theme music in the end credits
James Bond, "that is a Colt Cobra.. you have had your six."
Me tinks mayor Johnson could use M squid on the south side streets nowadays, like Troy st , home of the fabulous Weber brothers 😺
See that thumbnail? That's how you fire a handgun, my brothers.
Last words could be more profound than get outta heres😺
She has really luxe digs for a nightclub singer.

Lee Marvin always had an unorthodox way of holding a weapon.
Is this Emmy nominated series out on DVD?
I loved Lee Marvin. Passed away young but 3 packs a day will do that to you.
Interesting. A 6 shot revolver, dozens shots fired and never see anyone reload.
I was counting and I think Marvin only fired 4 or 5. Some S & Ws were only 5-shots.
That's Hollywood for you.
Typical move move by Mayor Daley. He and his crew were as crooked as they come..BTW, ex Rat Packer from Oceans Eleven, Richard Benedict, had a small part in this episode.
The 1970s had Kojak. The 1950s had Balinger.
Crime show in competition with Peter Gunn at the time. Both shows had music interludes, but in this show the combo music was faked. In Peter Gunn, the musicians actually played live.
Interesting for sure!
57 nomad turning left
23:59. Kind of wondering why he shot dude even after the latter ran out of bullets and threw his gun. Can't afford to do that today.
Y'know, ballinger could use some back up when he's out on these cases
Reminds me of another crime show earlier than this called I'm The Law. The hero is also a police lieutenant who never always has backup or even a partner sidekick around when busting crooks.
Marvin and his partner a trusty cigarette.

Wonder how much Lee was paid per episode???
he was co-owner of the show. In a 1958 interview, he said he was looking forward to the residuals. I'm not sure how much rerun action this series got, but at least he was thinking like a businessman.
When the one guy was talking, he blows smoke in his face! My parents, relatives, ALL adults blew smoke in my face. Made me sick!🤢
23:15. Oh, but he did -- in the leg.
The world is filled with these Grace types, who fall hard for these smooth talking hoods. She wouldn't fall for someone working in Home Depot or Walmart though.
2 more every day
12:27 perhaps the most horrific song ever composed…
Grow up!
@@r4rifle if you found that song palatable….oh dear.

Geez. Lose the horrible subtitles.
You can turn off your subtitles. Not this guys fault.
Did Lee just shot an unarmed man in the back?
In the leg.
Poor quality- impossible to make out what's going on
That was a pretty good express elevator serie. You can watch it between two floors (well almost).
The ending was too dry and boring.
