This has long been one of my favorite movies. I really like Edward G. in his lesser known, non-gangster roles. Joan Bennett is at her most alluring, and Dan Duryea is always strangely likeable, despite playing such a slimy weasel. Lang's primo Noir direction brings it all together.
Dan Duryea was strangely likeable because he was always playing against his real character. He was a simple home loving man, married for 35 years, a Scout Master and a pillar of the PTA
One of the great film noir classics. Great writing, acting, very atmospheric direction. Irony prevalent in virtually every scene. EGR demonstrating his acting range, and Dan Duryea, often an underrated actor, turns in yet another terrific sleazeball performance. In real life, he was an Ivy League graduate who had a successful career in advertising before he went into acting, and, was a dedicated family man, active in his local PTA and the Boy Scout troop of his sons. I met Ms. Bennett on two occasions as she was the grandmother of my best friend in college. At my friend's wedding, she and I discussed this movie. She said this was her favorite of her films, along with The Woman in the Window, which was also directed by Fritz Lang. She said her working chemistry with Duryea was the most genuine of any actor she ever worked with. Glad to see that so many folks like this film...
Edward G. Robinson was a very refined man and an artist whose work was commercially shown. It was said that he had one of the best art collections in Hollywood during his time.

They broke the mold with Edward g never be another like him. Doesn't matter who he plays because he becomes that character and you believe him.top 5 of the best ever. A wonderful human being also.
An extraordinary job of of film directing by the often underrated Fritz Lang, shot on the Universal lot in 1945 in a high glossy style. Unusual care was taken in every shot of the B&W photography and lighting by Milton Krasner with its wonderful atmospheric shadows and dark streets. The particularly realistic art direction and set decoration by the Universal Art Department make this one of the finest examples of big studio work at its best. Lang, as only the best directors who worked under studio control, was somehow able to have an inordinate control every aspect of the filmmaking, getting perfect performances from everyone in the cast from Joan Bennett as the dumb girl in love with a sadist down to the smallest bit player, some of whose names do not appear in the credits. The screenplay is by Dudley Nichols, long time collaborator with John Ford, who ingeniously gets around the censorship of the time by making the most heinous human beings and their acts understandable and sympathetic. No small achievement, of course. and one that would have been impossible without the brilliant presence and humanity of Edward G. Robinson as the little man.
This was a first class production. At the time, Universal was considered lower class, as compared to MGM, Warners, Paramount or Fox, but the studio was fighting to get back on its feet after bankruptcy nine years before. This film helped Universal.
I first saw this film when I was 16 and I loved it. I hadn't seen it in years now, and what a pleasure to enjoy this great classic again. Edward G. , Joan Bennet and Dan Duryea, and the master Fritz Lang directing. This is top class. They tt
He was so very good a playing a begger or a king, it wasn't a difficult task for Mr. Robinson.! In life he was considered one of our most knowlegable Art collectors. Many paintings valued well into MIIIIONS of dollars. Later in life he & wife entered a bitter divorce resulting in the courts ordering Mr. R to divide the huge now even higher valued Art collection with ex-Mrs.G. Not even that blow would deter his acting career. In his very senior years he proved more then ever he was an actors actor right up to his death almost in front of the cameras. Thanks for keeping his great talent alive by running so many Edward G. Roninson films .
Just like Mr. James Cagney, Mr. Robinson was a very versatile actor. Funny how gentle men can be so dark. Mr. Cagney was unbelievable as Mr. George M. @@thomaspiccirillo6820 You're kidding? Did they have "video" back then? Tough in the early going, on the cheap. Bad lighting, sets, cinematography, acting, etc. But then things got better. A lot of filming errors on that show. Sets moving and falling, crew seen in the shots, in mirrors. Only thing that made that show work was Barnabas.
Should be called, "How to utterly destroy a human being." Gotta love EGR, though, pulls off the serial killer mainstay, "He was quiet, unassuming, kept to himself," character, brilliantly.......and he always plays really twisted dudes well.....but he literally carried that movie, and made you pity his character for being so ill treated, conned so badly. You literally wish both Kitty and Johnny are dead, by the time they are, in the film.....and poor Chris, for being haunted by his actions. We almost wish he would lay claim to his artwork......but there's the rub, eh? Brilliantly acted by all three.
I have only seen a few of Lang's films including this but they have all been excellent. And to think this was the director's personal least favourite of his own work, I will be looking out for the rest. Scarlet Street moves at a quick pace without ever feeling rushed. For example it seemed like an eternity before Kitty finally turned openly mean. She is played perfectly shallow by Joan Bennett in this crossfire of awkward chance type relationships. Truly great work. I actually got to about 40 minutes watching it on Plex before the ads every 5 minutes almost drove me mad, particularly as they were all totally out of place betwixt scenes that were cut over 70 years ago. So very greatful I could watch it here without any interruptions.
"The Magic Bullet" and "Scarlet Street" are representative of Eddie Robinsons enormous talent and are his two best motion picture performances... excellent upload! 🙂
Edward G Robinson has been my all time favorite actor for years - my all time favorite Robinson film is "The Stranger" that also featured Orson Wells & Loretta Young. I actually purchased the DVD, however, I believe you can see it free here on you tube. Excellent film !
I love film noir.....they don't make movies like this anymore, they don't make actors like this anymore and they sure as hell dont make women like this anymore.....
Agreed. This film has everything in such an indirect way...first time 1 viewed i felt a alittle like eg was weak and felt sorry for such a debilitating character. Now i get it.... Just wish i could utter 'jeepers' and 'for cats sake' in lieu of 'f...'! Good vid, Joan Bennett a+, Dureya as well. EG goes without question. Thanks for the chance to hear it again.
I love this era of Hollywood but I must say that Fritz Lang was, for the most part, held back by the Hollywood machine. As much as I love Scarlet Street and The Big Heat, they were midgets compared to the giants of his early period such as M, the first two installments of his Mabuse trilogy, and Destiny.
Another one of my favorite films directed by the great Fritz Lang. The entire cast is excellent , especially Joan Bennett as the gorgeous and scheming. Femme fatale Kitty.😊😊😊
Excellent movie . This was a first for me. I started to watch it but then midway through it decided to read some of the comments , an am like no way ...am I gonna cry at the end ? So I jump bk to the movie fast forward just to see what happens at the end. Is Edward G Robinson gonna die , I ask myself . So I go bk to it where I left off watched it all the way through. An wow great movie . Yup had me on the edge , lots of twist an turns. Gotta say besides seeing Little Cesar etc. This was different. An yes actor Dan Duryea is also terrific. An nxt to him Richard Widmark in " Naked street " gangster movie an " Warlock " a western. Great actors James Cagney, Victor Mature, Anthony Quinn even George Raft. I could go on an on .
And Fritz Lang’s direction, his knack for story telling and composition is there from the first frame to the last: as soon as the first scene opens one can sit back and feel in safe hands.
Everybody is scamming everybody. This is a movie to enjoy with a step back from sentimental sympathy for the most emotionally vulnerable character. Everybody gets what's coming to them in this story with its many twists and turns.
This was a Most" unusual" movie, and it also, was quite adept at conveying a human being's subconscious guilt in subtle ways. All of the actors were very good,especially,M.Robinson.Thank You,so much,PizzaFlix, for sharing this" gem."
Films Like This Tells The Story Of Everyday Life. Cheaters, Users, Just No Good Con Artists. This Was In The 40'S & The Cons Are More Classy & Professional In The "2000's "s, But This Is A Very Good Movie. One Of My Favorite Classic Old Movie!!!
@Kelly Tyler Dan Duryea is always a whiny putz with little conscience - he does it so well !!!! Of course I haven't really seen All of his films - watch "Woman in the Window" same whiny putz ,,, he's a super plus for film noir !
Such a great script and performance. EGR is so much more than the 2 dimensional character I knew him to have become later. Huge new fan of his acting thanks to pizza. No one does low low lowest thug better than Duryea!
Another first-rate, classic film noir. The entire cast was exceptional. Next stop for Edward G. was going to be an asylum for the insane as his attempt at suicide failed. This movie is a keeper and perfectly fits the description of a dark melodrama. Another good upload Pizza 🍕.

Today Hollywood thinks putting sex and special animation to a movie is a block buster it's not
Dan Duryea was such a cad in this flick!!
Dan Durya, who more or less played second banana, is better than almost all today's 'stars'.
a wonderful film & lovely direction, i felt so sorry for Chris, he was a nice man
Directed by Fritz Lang! What a genius combo. Love the great Edward G.
Love the shirts women wore in the forties and the high heeled strap around the ankle shoes (ala joan Crawford)!
I think they called them blouses back then... They were beautiful
Blouses
@@thankthelord4536 yes, blouses!
"The Magic Bullet" and "Scarlet Street" are representative of Eddie Robinsons enormous talent and are his two best motion picture performances... excellent upload! 🙂
have you seen "woman in the window"? if no then you might need to bump one of your movies to 3rd place,
I think the ending of that movie is a little soft for a film noir.. it is in my top 10 favorite Eddie Robinson films.
honey owen I enjoyed that movie too
The three main characters played in that one too
Woman in the window is wonderful! Also Soylent green on a later movie. Love EGR.
Sylvia Frank cinnatti kid also
I just love his movies! An amazing actor!
Edward G Robinson has been my all time favorite actor for years - my all time favorite Robinson film is "The Stranger" that also featured Orson Wells & Loretta Young. I actually purchased the DVD, however, I believe you can see it free here on you tube.
Excellent film !
Robinson was a great collector of Impressionist Art
I love film noir.....they don't make movies like this anymore, they don't make actors like this anymore and they sure as hell dont make women like this anymore.....
CGI destroys everything.
Today's film, for children only.
The last great filmmaker was Kubrick, after that, bs.
Lying and cheating you mean? Oh, but they do!
You forgot to mention they don't make men like this anymore either!
NOW THIS IS A MOVIE I WOULD DIE FOR I WILL NEVER FOR GET , NEVER .
A FIVE Pepperoni PizzaFLIX ! One of my personal favorites. Thanks for watching! May the Sauce be with you.
Fascinating. No fast forwarding on this story.
Everybody is scamming everybody. This is a movie to enjoy with a step back from sentimental sympathy for the most emotionally vulnerable character. Everybody gets what's coming to them in this story with its many twists and turns.
A PizzaFLIX favorite. Great cast.
All three working together again, they worked together on the women in the window, I love that movie
What a great movie!!! Thanks for posting it.
This was a Most" unusual" movie, and it also, was quite adept at conveying a human being's subconscious guilt in subtle ways. All of the actors were very good,especially,M.Robinson.Thank You,so much,PizzaFlix, for sharing this" gem."
i love this film.....the lovely Joan Bennet, the fun Dapper Dan Duryea and the great Edward G Robinson. Love these classics.
Comment #2 - such brilliant acting, great writing, beautifully directed. Heart-breaking.
Films Like This Tells The Story Of Everyday Life. Cheaters, Users, Just No Good
Con Artists. This Was In The 40'S & The Cons Are More Classy & Professional
In The "2000's "s, But This Is A Very Good Movie. One Of My Favorite Classic Old Movie!!!
That was Brilliant!!! Thank you so much PizzaFlix 👍👍👍👍👍
Riveting
Thank you for a crisp clear upload
Wonderful piece of cinematic history
Great movie, Love Edward G Robinson and Joan Bennett can hold her own. Thanks for posting
Dan D. Was always a piece of work.......
Had never seen this one before, fantastic. Timeless classic
I always like a film with Dan Duryea doing his strangely-likeable swine act
@Kelly Tyler Dan Duryea is always a whiny putz with little conscience - he does it so well !!!! Of course I haven't really seen All of his films - watch "Woman in the Window" same whiny putz ,,, he's a super plus for film noir !
Such a great script and performance. EGR is so much more than the 2 dimensional character I knew him to have become later.
Huge new fan of his acting thanks to pizza.
No one does low low lowest thug better than Duryea!
Good movie, but it's so sad!
Beautiful copy, PizzaFlix, thank you so much for the upload. Much better than the one I had.
Truly enjoyable, these old classics. I remember them well.
Another first-rate, classic film noir. The entire cast was exceptional. Next stop for Edward G. was going to be an asylum for the insane as his attempt at suicide failed. This movie is a keeper and perfectly fits the description of a dark melodrama. Another good upload Pizza 🍕.
