  • You should eat low carb if you have a thyroid problem like hypothyroidism and want to lose weight, right? No!
    Cutting your carbohydrates has been shown to REDUCE thyroid function by negatively impacting thyroid lab tests like free T3 and reverse T3.
    The change that we see in people who go low carb for long periods of time mimics the same thyroid lab tests we see in chronically ill patients and in those who starve themselves.
    In other words, if you want better thyroid function and better thyroid lab tests, you need to eat more carbs.
    This applies if you have hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, and even if your thyroid has been removed.
    But how many carbs do you need?
    The answer? At least 100 grams per day.
    These carbs should be consumed as whole food sources, NOT processed foods like pastries, cookies, cakes, donuts, etc.
    And don't be stingy on fruits or 100% fruit juice either as both of these are healthy options and will not cause weight gain.
    Don't worry about carbs causing weight gain either, because that's not the case (see the studies in the video for proof).
    Cutting your carbs is a big mistake that thyroid patients make when trying to lose weight and if you want to see the others then check out this video: • Thyroid Weight Loss Mi...
    The 100-gram/day minimum even applies to those thyroid patients who have insulin resistance and the number only goes up from here depending on your activity level.

    Totally agree, removing/limiting carbs totally tanked my thyroid and testosterone. I should have continued to eat Whole Foods, instead of moving to low-carb/carnivore (on which I got fatter). Ultra-processed foods don't just contain refined carbs, but also refined fats - both of which drive insulin resistance (not because of carbs themselves).

    wait a minute! T4 is produced in the thyroid, but main pool of T3 is produced by liver through convertion. Drop of T3 is related to fact, that T3 hormone is used primariliy for carbohydrate and to some extend protein synthesis and turnover. Because ketogenic diet lowers protein turnover and lowers carobhydrate dependence (which is good in these two cases for many patiens) it is obvious that it also lowers cell requirement for T3. Major benefit of keto is lowering all inflamatory markers and diminishing allergic and hypersensitivity for fructans, lectins and even gliadin. The last three factors play some role in Hasimoto patients since keto beautifully lowers all three types of antibodies. We need to remember that ketogenic diet is a diet - that is a specialized form of nutrition to treat group of diseases. This is not just a form of nutrition for every single person on the planet. Field of studying optimal nutrition for healthy people is called bromatology. The same applies for carbohydrate-rich nutrition. This is not good for everybody. Some people (like me) should avoid carbohydrates in order - for instance - to function neurologically or metabolicaly for instance... 100 grams per day of carbohydrates means that these pationes won't benefit from ketones which are major players in extinguishing a few diseases (especially diabetes type II, polyneuropahty, dermatology, osteoarthritis). Just because some blood markers are different than on SAD diet, it does not mean they're bad..... Not all people tolerate starchy foods like beans. Grains are known (well established knowledge) to produce osteoarthritis and eye diseases. Fruits are ok provided that you eat them in moderation. Juice of fruits (especialy clarified) is known to generate fatty liver (ifructose is readily transofrmed into triglyceride-rich fatty acids) and generates large amount of uric acid which is not good for health in any way. The problem with fruit juice is that you don't drink a single glass. The M.D. you've mentioned is an athlete, so conclusions based on his blood tests are only valid for athletes, not for coach-potatoes like majority of people in industrialized countries. Typically you drink juicses to the bottom of the container of 1 or 2 litres which is 5 to 10 times more sugar than you get from a single fruit.... There are no RCT physicological studies on carbohydrate requirements even in the field of thyroid management. papers based on NHANES -like databases are not strong enough for building recomendations (correlation study with RR or HR

    • @MalindaTamlyn
      @MalindaTamlyn 22 дня назад

      @islaadele1212 22 дня назад

      @@MalindaTamlyn That's maybe true if you're not hypothyroid, but my TC peaked at nearly 700. If you're hypothyroid, you're suffering from malabsorption and gut issues anyway, and part of that is a very impaired lipid metabolism (low stomach acid and bile) so I was eating a high fat diet but my body couldn't metabolize it properly, and in the absence of insulin (my hba1c was as low as it goes) the fat couldn't be laid down in storage, so it just circulated in my blood. My triglycerides were also very high. The danger then comes from oxidation of those lipoproteins and their role in arterial plaque. Certainly high cholesterol is over treated, and I'd be comfortable with cholesterol over 300, but 700 is in outlier territory and I wasn't comfortable with it. My thyroid function continued to decline on carnivore - just not enough insulin for hormone production - so I reintroduced fruit and honey. I think Saladino's right.

After that I was starving to have carbs - and started having pizzas, later to find out I have also very propable celiacs decease. But many who don't have celiacs or glutein sensitivity seem to tell about how bad keto was to them. Now finally getting better! Thanks to vegan diet with lot of veggies, no soy and no glutein, and eating every day healthy good carbs, like oatmeal, rice and potatoes until I feel satisfied. Plantiful Kiki's inspo has also helped me, as well as some youtuber doctors with hypothyroidism. I found out I used to eat healthy based on the diet I learned at my European home and school back (which is VERY different from regular American diet as long as I know) in the day, but all these fad dieting and fitness gurus and their followers have messed me, my eating and my health up. This video is adding to miss information. The reason T3 goes down on a low carbohydrate diet is because your body is running more efficiently and you don’t need as much. You need more T3 when you eat more carbohydrates. This does not mean your thyroid is not working as well. T3 and insulin use the same receptors sites on the cell. If insulin is high the sites are blocked with insulin and T3 can’t get in. Your body needs more T3. On a low carb or carnivore diet you keep your insulin low, T3 is used more efficiently and your body needs less. It is not broken. Paul S ate more carbs and his T3 went up, it should, he produced more insulin. Check out Ben Bikman’s research on insulin and thyroid.

      Nope. Because your thyroid isn't making any. I've had mine 5:31 I had to tell my doctor that I want T3 in addition to T4. Plus, I'm looking into getting Doc's T2 supplement. There is no T1 of anything to supplement with. They think that T4 is enough when, in reality, you're missing 3 other T's. A 100 grams of carbs is ridiculous.

      All three macros are essential in different degrees and for different functions. There is no such thing as any nutrient (macro or micro) being non-essential. Eating less carbs (and doing carnivore) not only tanked my thyroid but also made me fatter.

      @@sethtphillips Anthony Chaffee MD (Neurosurgeon) has repeated instances of patients eating zero carbs on a high fat high protein diet gaining 50 to 300 points in testosterone levels and healing their thyroid. The amount of carbs your body makes is completely sufficient for what you need. High fat is what heals the thyroid.
      The term "essential" in nutrition refers to nutrients that the body cannot produce in sufficient quantities to meet its needs, and therefore must be obtained from the diet. These nutrients are considered essential for survival and for the proper functioning of the body. This includes essential fatty acids, essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Carbohydrates are not essential nutrients.

The body can make cholesterol on its own, yet it doesn't make enough, nor does it make enough glucose. All nutrients are essential in different degrees, and that includes Carbohydrates. I needed carbohydrates to retain my thyroid function. I was doing wonderful doing just Whole Foods, for many years, without any restriction, and totally regret ever doing low carb and carnivore.

      @@sethtphillips They are not an exception to the rule. The rule is ancestral. We have been eating primarily protein and fat for the majority of our evolution. Fat does not make you fatter, carbs do, because of the hormonal response they cause with insulin. Fat has the lowest insulin response. High insulin is one of the main causes of obesity, caused from diets high in carbohydrates.
      Carbohydrates are not an essential macronutrient in the same way that proteins and fats are. Your body can produce glucose, the primary fuel source for your brain and muscles, through a process called gluconeogenesis, which converts other nutrients like fat and protein into glucose when needed. This means that carbohydrates are not necessary for survival.

    • @sethtphillips
      @sethtphillips Месяц назад +2

    Totally disagree with fruit, especially fruit juice. Pure sugar. I love you, Dr. Childs, but I can't get on board with a hundred or more grams of carbs. I consistently gained weight and a fatty liver over 30 years of eating "healthy whole fresh fruits" and "healthy whole grains." Oatmeal with blueberries for breakfast was supposed to be the healthiest thing I could possibly eat. It made me ravenous all day long. No more. Big protein for breakfast is the fuel to get through the day with minimal, vegetable-based carbs. Protein and vegetables keeps me satiated all day long now, and some weight is FINALLY coming off, my waistline is under the 35-inch danger zone, my TSH down to 1.4, liver enzymes down and almost in range now, and even my TPO is down a little (after it went from 300 at diagnosis to over 900 in a year and a half, while I followed a "healthy, balanced diet of whole foods" and cut out gluten, soy, dairy, did yoga, relaxation breathing, walked twice a day, took my levothyroxine - did EVERYTHING I was supposed to do and was rewarded with an expanding waistline and tripling of my TPO antibodies. I finally knew I had to do something extreme. I did. Things are turning around. I'll keep watching your channel, but I'm not eating the carbs or changing my mind that sugar of all kinds is poison.

Having severe food allergies/sensitivities, eating just meat feels great! I won’t live my life in misery just because of a “study” … I listen to my body. If I’m eating an animal based diet, which only includes meat/organs at this point, and then I slowly introduce foods back into my diet and feel terrible, guess what-I don’t give a F about a study, I’m going to continue doing what’s best for my body. Why do you seem to be so against carnivore/keto-it literally helps people with diabetes, autoimmune issues, mental health issues, and so much more. Now, I remember why I got fat, in the first place. Skeptical is hardly a suitable word. Recently, I tried losing weight on only one meal a day, with a half cup of macaroni and some home made tomato sauce for dinner. I really really tried. Did my best to fast most of the day, I was starved for food ... and didn't lose a lb. Went on Keto and lost 5 lbs., (which is mostly invisible because of water gain) I really think, at my age, the best thing to do is STOP EATING. If I ate as much as you are advising, I'd be a literal blimp in very short time. I'm desperate to lose the belly fat. I want to garden and move around. I don't want to be fat and old in wheel chair.
    It's like falling into an abyss. Oh, and 1000-1200 calories a day is TOO much. 700 is closer to the truth.
    I can't possibly consume 100 grams of carbohydrates a day and NOT gain weight. There is no way to know I am taking weight off other than the numbers on the scale. I've lost 5 lbs and don't see a hint of the loss on my body.
    The only thing that I really miss is bread/crackers. They help with my IBS symptoms, without them I depend on Psyllium, es. Metamucil . IBS is an embarrassing, awful problem, I've had so bad in the past, I would nearly pass out. I'm terrified if I tried your idea I'd gain back the 5 lbs I've lost in day. Seriously, that is how fast I can can weight.
    Oh, I'm 73, have hypothyroidism, IBS, and Lactose intolerance.
