Thyroid Weight Loss Mistakes (AVOID These)

  • Despite what many of you may feel, it's definitely possible to get to a normal weight if you have a thyroid problem.
That doesn't mean it's easy, but it does mean it's possible.
In order to do that, though, you'll want to avoid these mistakes.
Mistake 1. Massive upfront calorie restriction.
Calorie restriction in some form will be necessary to get to your ideal weight but many thyroid patients should spend more time focusing on their thyroid function instead of their calories, at least in the beginning.
Mistake 2. No weight goal or plan.
Thyroid patients who set specific goals are the ones who will reach them. If you don't have a plan then you won't obtain your goal.
Mistake 3. Overeating healthy foods or "healthy" versions of unhealthy foods.
Paleo brownies are still brownies whether they are paleo or not. Are they healthier than box brownies? Sure. But they still shouldn't be on the menu if you are trying to lose weight.
Mistake 4. Not having realistic expectations.
As a thyroid patient, your weight loss is going to be slower than the average person. Coming to terms with this will help sustain your efforts.
Mistake 5. Cutting carbs too quickly.
Cutting carbs is great for a quick burst of weight loss due to a loss of fluid so be mindful about when you cut them.
Mistake 6. No resistance training (you're losing muscle and fat instead of just fat).
Your goal should be to lose fat and maintain muscle but most people end up losing 50% fat and 50% muscle.

I have Hashimotos, went to 20 carbs or less a day
    Increased fats, protein.
No sugar, no flour. No high glycemic veggies.
Tough for the first few months
After 6 months, I've lost 23 pounds, another 10 to 15 pounds to go.
My thyroid antibodies number decreased by half.
My tsh went from 2.6 to 1.80.
I am not hungry until late afternoon or evening.
Do not count calories at all
    Energy is much better.
Eating just a few foods is also a good way to figure out what foods cause issues.
No sugar, no flour moved my numbers in the right direction.

Such important information!! I went hard-core keto for quite some time, was feeling top of the world, losing weight super fast. I became a keto snob.
One morning I woke up feeling okay but as the day went on something started feeling off and rapidly went downhill. Over the course of a few months I was in and out of hospital, electrolyte imbalance even though I wasgetting it everyday. My thyroid completely shut down and stopped responding to medication. My hashimotos antibodies were over 3000 and I was dying(literally). My body started eating my own muscle mass causing severe pain and spasms everywhere. After so much testing, multiple medications, hospital stays and a few months where I wasn't even able to drive. My doctor said thyroid patients absolutely MUST have carbs!! Labs will always look great at first and for a while but Long term carb deprivation will cause the body to go into shock and eat itself inside out. My doctor is a huge keto fan but he agrees it's not a good idea long term. I know the keto mobs will disagree but that was my experience. I put all the weight back on plus some and have not been able to lose a single pound since no matter what I do.
Thanks for making such informative videos

I refuse to count calories! Inflammation is a big issues with Hashimoto. I can feel my body getting leaner just by eating whole foods on a schedule with intermittent fasting. 1st meal is at 1 pm. Last meal around 5-6pm. It took a while to get to 2 meals.

@@maryptacek3453 Hi Mary! I've discovered any stress, upset or grief lowers the immune system and triggers inflammation and terrible pain. I do everything to avoid stress at all cost! I don't even watch a stressful movie .
You can find lists online of Low Food Mop and Anti-inflammatory foods. I also take 20,000 IU's of vitamin D3 (see Dr. Berg's videos on Vit D3. It REALLY does help put autoimmune into remission!). I buy magnesium citrate from the grocery store. Cherry is best. I do a few tablespoons in a oz of water every few days. If I start hurting I know the magnesium will help.
Dr Child's did a video on black seed oil a week ago. A good quality oil is very expensive so I found a recipe on YT for black seed tea (Nigella seeds but also known by other names in Asia). I got some at an Indian grocery store and cardomum pods. And make a tea also with fennel and fresh ginger. Following the recipe I found on YT.
I woke up feeling great today!

I went from 5ogm of protein to 100-150gm a day and my thyroid is functioning now. I literally was starving by doctors advice for 15 years. 4 months eating and im better. Fasting (IF) is not calorie restriction is eating in a smaller window as we used to. If you don't eat enough the body will eat itself.

Mary, if you live near Guyton/Savannah.. look for Anna Banister. She is an NPC, and I used to see her. She may be able to help - she certainly listens more than others, and cares more than many. She was the only one to tell me I was estrogen dominant after a litany of doctors in other states, like Alabama.

that😔. My mom went through chemo and had bad sugar cravings as well. Her doctor said the cravings for sugar specifically was because the body needs so much energy to recover from chemo. Her solution was more natural sugar like fruit salad with no filler whip cream and organic chocolate chips. Made a huge difference.

Hello, I have been on thyroid medication for over 10 years and have maintained my weight. I experimented with stopping my thyroid medication and I actually was able to fluctuate my weight down and not so high as it was when I was on medication. I did feel more fatigued without the medication. I ended up going back onto the mediation and I gained all my weight back and now maintaining, unable to have any fluctuations like I had when I stopped it. I do feel not as fatigued, but my question is why do you not have the low weight fluctuations when on thyroid medication? I’m so baffled. TIA for any help on this.

I would add that once you get beyond the menopause it is just impossible to change anything at all. Maybe a few tips for post menopausal women would be good. I am struggling to stay the same weight and have tried everything but I refuse to try any diet that sounds faddy. Basic calorie reduction and including as many healthy whole foods as possible, seems the best solution but I still struggle as I have all my life. As far as I know my thyroid is just low functioning and has been for 25 years.
