  • One easy way to check the status of your overall health and the health of your thyroid is by simply looking at your nails.
Because your nails grow slowly, and because they respond to stressors on the inside of your body, they represent a 6 month history of your overall health.
It just so happens that they also give you valuable information about your thyroid function as well.
    In hypothyroidism roughly:
70% of patients experience fragile nails
    48% experience slow growth
    40% experience thinning
And 38% experience onycholysis (which is nail separation at the base)
    In hyperthyroidism roughly:
100% of patients experience koilonychia (which is depression of the nail in the center with flaring of the nails on the side)
83% experience softening of the nail
29% experience onycholysis (which, again, is nail separation)
    And 10% experience brittle nails
In addition to these problems, those with thyroid problems are also at increased risk for developing:
    1. Leukonychia
    2. Pits in the nails
    3. Brittle nail syndrome
    4. Vertical lines
    5. Horizontal lines
These 6 treatments can help improve the quality of your nails:
    1. Avoid nail trauma
    2. Make sure you optimize thyroid function
    3. Take a multivitamin
    4. Reduce your intake of calcium and take vitamin K2
    5. Take collagen peptides
    6. Take silicon

Don't worry about pics because if you have thyroid nail problem you will be in pain. You go to pick something up and your nail spits and it hurts so now you have to tend to it and cut it straight which is down to the skin. You will not be able to grow any nails and have to keep them low to the skin and if you are really having off the chart thyroid test you won't be able to pick things up for pain in your fingers. I never knew how important the fingernails were till my thyroid went south. You cannot grow fingernails if you have thyroid issues affecting it and you will be in pain.

My nails have improved considerably since taking silica & collagen. I’ve had ridges for years, but after only 7 weeks they are smooth. The ridges are barely visible now & strong.

I always had soft brittle nails probably because of my thyroid but recently my hair started falling out and my mum recommended Biotin. I started taking Biotin 4-5 months ago and I noticed my nails are quite hard now!

What about nails coming loose from the nail bed onycholysis when changing from Armour Thyroid (expensive and not covered with insurance) to Levothyroxine (free with insurance)? My T4 is high and T3 is very low normal, TSH low. Doctor lowered Levo dose and I feel sluggish and horrible, bloated. Nails brittle and breaking and also deep vertical ridge in left thumb. Has anyone had this? Help! How can you tell if Onycholysis is from high T4 or low T3?

    • @jcyensen1236
      @jcyensen1236 16 дней назад

Ridges are nothing unless your nails split when you pick something up. You know if you have thyroid nails because they are painful and hard to pick things up with your fingers and the nail will split and cause pain. And you have to tend to them keeping the nails very low on the finger even with your skin.

The only thing on my nails are on my thumb nails, a dark curved line about two weeks wide and about two months old. One nail is a normal colour on both sides of the line, the other is much lighter between the line up to the cuticle.
