    Last month I insisted my doctor schedule a blood test for antibodies to see if they were causing my longstanding hypothyroidism. He looked puzzled and asked why. I told him about leaky gut, gluten and molecular mimicry and that people with one autoimmune disease are more likely to get another. He asked, _"Where are you getting this stuff?"_ Seriously. Incredible!
    It turned out that yes, I _do_ have both TPO and TgAb antibodies even though I'm eating keto, largely free of gluten, soy, corn and seed oils.
    This month I'm experimenting by avoiding all dairy. I've already seen a benefit. I hope I don't have to give up dairy forever, but I'm pleased to finally be making progress.

      @@KenJackson_US I can't find one either. We have places in Omaha but the waitlist is like 8 months and no insurance covers anything at a functional doctor. It is infuriating. I've been going it alone for a while. Doctors don't like to be told what to test and why you do or don't want certain tests/medications. I had a similar experience as you when I tried a new doctor last year. He didn't want to test anything but I had a list of all the thyroid related tests I wanted. He told me it was pointless to have my antibodies tested if I tested positive for them in the past "bc they never go away". I wanted to see if they had lowered bc of the diet & lifestyle changes I had made. (They were significantly lower btw) All he wanted to do was prescribe me a 100 different medications, even after the first thing I said was that I wanted to stay off all prescriptions. He wanted to give me an antidepressant and metformin. I am not depressed, not overweight, do not have diabetes. Unbelievable. After my appt he said, "ok well, I'll see ya in a year if you want to make another appt." No thanks!

      Hey Dianne, don't sweat it. You know iodine excess or deficiency can cause nodules, but others can cause nodules too!! Selenium, iron, zinc are just a few that I've read the published research papers on. I (and my doctor) had no idea! Quick summary: selenium helps snuff out the hydrogen peroxide fire after thyroids byproduct of T4, also helps convert it to active t3.
      Zinc is an antioxidant and assists thyroid, as does copper. So don't do either of those in huge doses or you could drop the other, since they compete.
      Vitamin D and magnesium are crucial in hundreds of functions globally, including thyroiditis.
      Iron deficiency or even ferritin under 100 can cause nodules too! Still learning what all iron does for thyroid hormone.

    • @msforce9

      Because you are NOT supposed to take iodine through supplements. Only if you have a serious lack, and for a short period. There is this Iodine Project people, spreading around misinformation , urging people to take high doses of iodine, while all the research is showing that above or below the recommended dosage is harmful.
      I fell into this deception as well, but thank God I fell on a video from another doctor, who explains in detail why this Project is false and even dangerous. I watched this video here for cross-reference, bc I trust doctor Hyman, and surely enough he NEVER mentioned taking iodine supps!!!

    For people on no medication but are told they are 'borderline' hypothyroid. Try changing your diet. Do everything you can before taking levo. An acquaintance also borderline, paid to see a Harley Street doctor and he prescribed iodine drops, which bought her back to normal levels. I didnt know this at the time and stupidly, without even researching, 7 years ago I started 50mcg levo and now take100mcg. In my personal opinion, once youre on levo its impossible to come off. Over the last two years ive stuck ridgedly to different diets - more recently high fat ketovoire and iodine 2 drops (also lost 35lbs. My tsh went from 2.1 to 9.5. Nothing works for me. Obviously, some doctors know the trick is to try iodine BEFORE levo but theres no money in it. I hate taking Levo (because of future bone issues) but am beginning to come to terms with it. Ill never forgive nhs for not suggesting iodine FIRST. In UK they refuse to test t3, too. Ive given up.

      Sorry to hear that Virginia. I agree. Have you had your ferritin above 100 this whole time? And B12 above 500ng (not nmol)... Lastly selenium and zinc are crucial to convert T4 into T3.

      Some things we need for good thyroid function are
      - 75mcg to 350 mcg iodide in diet (but not too much more as otherwise it reverses into worsening hypothyroidism) (cow's milk is a good source or goats milk if can't tolerate) (salt in America is already loaded with it)
      - need to be out of iron deficiency and probably copper deficiency
      - need some carbohydrate intake
      - maybe need some selenium, found in meat
      - need to avoid PUFA polyunsaturated fats (seed oils) as they inhibit thyroid
      - maybe need to lower estrogen if it's too high, with things like hesperidin in orange juice potentially

    The reason levothyroxine (Synthroid) doesnt work well for most people is that it only supplies T4, but not T3. You need BOTH. Ask your foctor for a full thyroid panel & antibodies and tell them you'd like to switch to Armour Thyroid.
    It's a natural source (pig) of thyroid hormone, closely related to human thyroid, much more effective than the synthetic levothyroxine. Natural thyroid will likely make a significant difference if you suffer from hypothyroidism symptoms.

    Levothyroxine affects gaba glutamine balance so it can cause anxiety, especially if you're stressed, levothyroxine can cause you to make reverse t3 which harms thyroid. It also affects histaminase so you may have allergy like symptoms: I had itchy skin. I am now addressing sibo instead as there is a found link between hypothyroidism and sibo. Early 90s when we began to search for things on the internet, I found that Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome seemed to describe my symptoms. It was too much of a hassle to do the temperature taking protocol and I let that fall by the wayside. My symptoms were not severe at all but they were there nevertheless. I’ve never had healthy eyebrows or thick hair. I’ve usually lost motivation to finish most bigger projects unless others were counting on me. About seven years ago, a coworker was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, and her symptoms did not quite line up with mine but I still was thinking that my symptoms were thyroid related. In the last six months I’ve re-researched it and have added iodine to my morning coffee. What a difference! By day two I was doing “normal” stuff without even thinking about it. Finishing what I started. Taking the trash out more often. Keeping up with the laundry. Going to bed with a clean kitchen sink. I’m so grateful.

When i was diagnosed my TSH was 90 and my TPO antibodies were over 30,000. I felt like death. There is also a great resource you can use to manage your thyroid health called Paloma Healthcare. You can do at home Labs and mail them in and meet with a doctor virtually. Can't say enough about them. Eat clean, low carbohydrates, gluten free

    It's also so hard to do these gut resets when you're vegetarian .. or if you have a histamine sensitivity (can't do fish than)
    Ugh ... If anyone has guidance as to where to start ...
    Also... Would a naturopathic Dr do the same type of comprehensive testing that a functional doc would ?

      You need HS-CRP, TPO and thyroglobulin tested (as well as Free T3 and Free T4). You probably also need a big diet change, and should do a functional LUGOL’s IODINE patch test, and then start supplementing. (Iodine must be Lugol’s 5%).

    Dr. Hyman I am 71 years old and had been on thyroid medicine for 30 years. I got sick and tired of taking it and weaned myself off of it two years ago. I feel fine. Have not had any over-the-counter medication‘s in about 25+ years absolutely none. No Tylenol no Advil no cough syrup nothing and the doctors look at me as if I am a freak or something! I basically have been doing everything you said should be done that I can do. The doctors are devastated because it’s been over almost 2 year now and my labs are completely off the chart. Nevertheless I feel better than ever. How would you dealwith those type of patients. Doctors often ask me what do I use for pain when I have it and I tell them I find most of my medicine in my kitchen! I would really love to sit down and have a conversation with you.

      Several of us are wondering what you mean by "off the charts." Are you saying that your labs show that you are very hypothyroid but since you feel fine, you aren't going to treat it? I would keep doing what you are doing; I took Synthroid for years and didn't feel any better on it.

    • @vanessaross3458
      @vanessaross3458 7 месяцев назад +14

      Sorry for the delay everyone. I should have made it clear when I stated my labs work was off the charts. My apology. My labs were extremely bad. My doctor just ask me how am I feeling and I told him I feel better and that my bones felt stronger. He doesn’t pressure me to take them either way. He still calls in a prescription to the pharmacy for me but I never pick it up. However if it all possible I will try to find a doctor that specialize in hypothyroidism and know what they are doing. Another thing. Some years ago I became a raw foodie and was eating everything from the Earth nothing cook for almost 2 years and my doctor lower my thyroid medication twice in six months. At the time I was eating mostly raw kale, broccoli, collards and a huge amount of raw foods they said we should not eat with hypothyroidism. Yet my doctor lower my medication dose twice in six months. I truly wish someone would stop the madness and get to the bottom of the truth! Until then I guess I would be my own guinea pig with God’s blessing I will survive whatever the outcome. I truly want to be medication free! And that is from all pharmaceuticals absolutely!

    I am hypothyroid-- Hashi-- I came off my Synthroid in February to have a Thyroid Uptake scan done which was 2 weeks ago. Hope to hear about my results tomorrow. However, I feel so good being off my Synthroid. Its been 9 weeks since I've been off of it now. While on it, i would have cardiac events like tachycardia early in the mornings when id wake up. My heart rate would jump up to 144 bpm . Made me feel like i was having a heart attack. I have not had one of those episodes since I've been off the medication. Im terrified of going back on any thyroid meds once they tell me my results from my thyroid scan.
    What would be your opinion on how to start back on something ??

    What is parathyroid?

    • @magpiegirl3783
      @magpiegirl3783 7 месяцев назад

      Parathyroids are 4 small glands about the size of a grain of rice and they sit behind the thyroid. Their sole job is to regulate calcium levels in the blood to maintain a pretty strict balance. If the calcium level drops, the parathyroids send out the parathyroid hormone which tells the bones to release calcium. Dysfunction of the parathyroid can cause hypercalcemia and osteoporosis. Detected by blood testing. The parathyroids play up if they have a growth on them. This growth maybe on 1 or more of the glands. And must be operated on.
