Losing Weight on Levothyroxine: Why it's Not Working and How to Fix it

  • Losing weight on levothyroxine, is it possible? You bet. Here's why your levothyroxine is not helping with weight loss and how to fix it.
Levothyroxine is the most commonly prescribed medication for treating low thyroid or hypothyroidism.
One of the most common symptoms associated with low thyroid function is WEIGHT GAIN. You might think that treating your thyroid using thyroid medication would cause you to lose weight but that isn't always the case and this video explains why that is.
It makes sense that increasing your thyroid hormone should cause weight loss, especially if the opposite leads to weight gain.
So if levothyroxine isn't helping you with weight loss the question is why not? Here are a few reasons why this may be the case:
#1. Is it the right medication for you?
There are many different thyroid medications available on the market and they are not all created equal. Levothyroxine may simply not be the best medication for your body.
#2. Have you waited long enough?
Even if levothyroxine is the right medication for you, have you given it enough time to kick in and to work?
It takes roughly 4-6 weeks to see any change once you make changes to your thyroid medication dose!
    #3. Are you taking enough?
While levothyroxine may be the right medication for you, you have to make sure that you are taking enough.
It won't provide any benefit to you if your dose is simply too low.
#4. Is it getting into your system?
And lastly, you have to make sure that the medication you are taking is getting into your system. Believe it or not, people take their thyroid medication incorrectly which leads to decreased absorption in the gut.
When it comes down to it, levothyroxine just isn't always the best option for weight loss. Other thyroid medications, especially those that contain T3 thyroid hormone are often much more effective of that purpose. These medications include things like Armour thyroid, other formulations of NDT, and even T3 only thyroid medications.
If you aren't sure what to do next I've created a list of people who tend to do the BEST on levothyroxine. People in this category include those who are:
    - Treatment naive
    - Sensitive to T3 and/or NDT medications
    - Sensitive to medications and supplements in general
    - Have few if any chronic illnesses
    - Have seen some improvement on levothyroxine within a short period of time (usually between 4-8 weeks)
Are you using levothyroxine? Is it helping you with weight loss? Let me know below!

I was diagnosed in 1997 with an underactive thyroid. All these years I cannot remember a time that I have not been tired. I have battled my weight. I go to bed tired. I wake up tired. And yet the doctor says my levels are good. Good for who? I really don't think they care. Chronic fatigue is a way of life. Not sleeping good compounds everything. They. Do. Not. Care.

I've read some of the comments and realise that they are new patients to thyroxin. That is great because they are being educated on the meds prescribed to them. I've been on Levothyroxine for 27 years. When I started I was 7 1/2 stone the dose was 50mg. Now I am on 100 mg and have been for 20 years. My weight has blossomed to 10.7 stones and counting. I've never heard of T4 or T3 or know what my level is or what it should be. But I will speak to my Dr during my next appointment about this as my health has changed substantially since I first started to take Levothyroxine so maybe a change would be beneficial. Wish me luck!

I’ve never been skinny but very curvy, always weighed between 140-155lbs. I’m a recovering addict with ten years, four months and seven days. I stopped taking my medication off and on which I know must of messed with my levels. For the last 8 years I’ve been on 100 mcg. Thing is I gained 45-55 lbs….just out of the blue, esp my belly. I have Medicaid and it’s so hard to find a good dr in Los Angeles. I also don’t know if I have hashimotos, but I do have endometriosis and mental illness. I now can’t eat throughout the day or night, my diet is terrible and I’ve lost all sense of security. Not to mention I suffer from ptsd and anxiety disorder with a touch of depression lol. Do you or anyone know any good Medicaid doctors or have any suggestion? I’m at my wits end literally 😢🤦🏻‍♀️Thank you🙏

You might be eating too little and exercising too much. You need adequate calories and protein for your body to function and adequate rest between days of exercise for body recovery. Less cardio more weights add 20 min of HIIT 2x week, decrease stress and increase sleep quality as Cortisol affects weight and high stress and/or poor sleep increases cortisol.

I am switching back to cytomel (T3) Great advice regarding what time to take medicine and not with coffee or supplements. I will try at night. The Best Doctor is one that listens to the patient. I thrived on T3. Thanks Dr. Childs

I went to T3 only. I was taking Levothyroxine and Cytomel. I always felt like I had the flu. My body was so achy I felt horrible. I ran out of my levothyroxine and it was going to be about a week before I could get a refill so I just took my Cytomel. I immediately noticed that I felt better off the levothyroxine. My body didn’t ache all of the time and I felt better. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for weight loss, but feeling better was a huge bonus for me.

But Blue Cross won't cover it, because it's not FDA-approved. Do you know if Cytamel would be better? I will go for my blood test in a month for thyroid, to see if the Armour is working. I also have a very unbalanced-shaped thyroid gland (very small on one side and regular size on the other side), and just found this out 6 months ago after a scan. (Rumor has it, that I was the baby that made it mandatory to check for thyroid at birth, apparently they hadn't been in 1961) I've been on Levothyroxine for all of my life, I was taking, for years, .150 mcg.. I have since been lowered quite a bit over the last 8 years, so now taking, .75 mcg.. and have to get my thyroid panel done this week.. I've been telling my doctor that this is not a supplement but rather a total replacement.. they've been telling me that I've had it backwards my whole life, that I shouldn't be taking so much, hence the lowering about every 6 months.. I have started to gain some weight, on this new dose.. actually.. I am 5ft tall and currently 114 lbs.. which for me, seems a bit too much weight for my body/bone structure. Interesting..

After the covid shot even before it, but especially after it I felt episodes of anxiety, insomnia, intense left shoulder/trap muscle pains, shortness of breath, confusion, so I took an extra blood pressure pill and few baby aspirins and in hour to two hours it calmed down, then I would stop my thyroid medication, the Synthroid always had messed me up, but these times it was way worse after the covid shots, but upon going to ER the next day everything was fine. I normally am afraid now to take my levothyroxine daily, because of great sensitivity to hyper thyroid symptoms, I've been told I had hashimotos, I have a huge Lipoma in my neck near the thyroid area, and used to have a goiter, its weird, my doctors was a total prick, he pushed and pushed synthroid after I told him I could not tolerate it, and prefered levothyroxine, but he made it near impossible for me to get refills for levoT until I found a nurse practitioner who was really cool, and I told her I think your clinic is trying to kill me intentionally, she went behind the doctors back and secretly filled LevoT about 25 mg less than the synthroid dose the doctors was pushing and finally my TSH came into range. For 8 years my TSH has been in constant YO YO cycles, Doctors are total Dick heads they could care less what patients say, they are always right, and screw you if you start to sweat at night, poop three times a day, can't sleep, and start having anxiety and hyper speech.

Hi Dr Childs, somewhere in one of your videos (maybe this one) you mention the life or half life of thyroxine in the body and how it can last a week in your body...something like that. Why then does it matter so much what time of day that you take your thyroxine? I was taking it in the morning but decided to switch it up after you said that some people absorb it better when they take it at night. Since it doesn't appear to have an immediate effect given you say it lasts in your body for ages then why does this matter? Just curious. :-)

I do NOT wake up at the same time every morning, but I AM awake at 630pm every day, and I don't eat around that time, so that when I take mine.

My doctor prescribed 112mcg Levo. I think that's a pretty high starter dosage. My level was 7 in early February and 11.2 at the end of February (normal range 0.27 to 4.2). My testosterone and estrogen were in range. My progesterone was high, and my Free Thyroxine was low. I also had a pituitary tumor which caused Cushing's and I had it removed last year and lost 30 lbs. without changing a thing. I also have a goiter and a few cysts, and one is questionable. Right now, I'm waiting to have a biopsy and I do have neck pain in that area on and off. I also hear clicking sometimes, when I drink liquids. I haven't filled my prescription yet and would rather wait on the results from my biopsy once I have it done. $140 for 30 capsules of 112 mcg Levo sounds high.

the norm is actually 2.5 if you're not above 30 years old. 4.2 is a norm for grannies.

Damn, where you live? In ga even without insurance my Levo is only like 20$ max. I use Publix and I go for generic, no point in being stuck in a brand name, for some reason some people really refuse generics.

I've lost like 10% of my body fat weight in a year on Levotheroxine. I'm super sensitive to medications.
When I started the Levotheroxine, I didn't know I would lose weight.
My mental health was at its lowest, like I didn't want to be on this planet anymore, so my doctor tested my thyroid cuz she been looking into how the thyroid effects mental health. So Yea I didn't even know the part about losing weight, I just wanted my deep depression treated.
It helped me so much, I just couldn't believe how much better mentally, emotionally, and physically I would be after this last year.

@@paulinesoares3594 you just said "Low carb diets cause weight loss if you eat the right carbs." Yer not making any sense here mate. Either way, low carb diets don't lose weight any more than low protein or low fat diets. Calories in - calories out for weight loss, irregardless of the macros. Low carb diets are linked to increased mortality rates anyway, so there's 2 great reasons you're factually incorrect.

    • @paulinesoares3594

@@dreamthread wrong. Eating bread, pasta, etc causes weight gain because of all the sugars and starches in them. Plus the added chemicals in them. Fresh veggies don’t have that. That’s why there is a big difference in an apple and a doughnut.

Hi, Most informative video about thyroid medications. I was diagnosed early 2021 with hypothyroidism. I’ve been on levothyroxin consistently know for 3 months. (I was in denial about having to take medication everyday the rest of my life.) I have seen huge improvement with my fatigue and energy levels have come up. But I cant seem to loose any weight. I’m mostly maintaining. I hate being in pictures. I’m trying to get my vitamin D levels up right now. As they were low too. Is there anything else I can do?

I’ve had significant weight loss since I started Levothyroxine after my thyroidectomy a little over a year ago. My doctor adjusted my dose about 2-3x within that year. I feel I’m doing well on my current dose and I think I’m taking my medication somewhat correctly but do you have any solid suggestions on exactly how to take Levothyroxine for maximum results?

I've been on Levothyroxine and Armour thyroid for several years. I'm working with a functional medicine doctor but we can't seem to crack the code regarding weight loss. I also have Hashimoto's so autoimmune is a factor as well. So far, nothing is working (after 10 years of trying). I don't want to believe that at 60, this is my life. I've always been active so this is very frustrating, as you can imagine. Thanks for your videos. I've also shared them with my doc.
