  • What is a thyroid belly?
It's the characteristic shape of the abdomen that many patients with hypothyroidism end up with and it's caused by 4 things:
    1. Visceral fat.
Visceral fat is the fat that surrounds your organs. Thyroid dysfunction increases your risk for developing this type of fat. The more you have of it, the more it will push outward and cause a thyroid belly.
    2. Subcutaneous fat.
Subcutaneous fat is the fat that wiggles and jiggles and is found underneath your skin. This type of fat can also be caused by thyroid dysfunction.
    3. Gas and bloating.
Thyroid patients often end up with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and constipation which can distend the abdomen and result in a thyroid belly.
    4. Fluid retention
Lastly, hypothyroidism and the low thyroid state can cause fluid to accumulate in the abdomen which, once again, causes a protrusion of the belly.
Can you get rid of your thyroid belly? Absolutely, but it will require that you figure out which of the 4 causes I just mentioned above are contributing in your case.
For most people, it will be a combination of all 4, but, sometimes, one will play a more important role than the others.
The best thing you can do to eliminate your thyroid belly is to optimize your thyroid and you can learn more about how to do that here: • How to Increase T4 Lev...

Endocrinologists are 4:35 ignorant of this sadly; they know overactive causes weight loss and frequent bowel movements. But with hypothyroidism they blame the patient as if it's our fault, even though we eat and exercise bettee than our piers.

I'm 😠 I want this fat gone I am in the process of getting this bad unwanted fat off of me. I hate it I'm ashamed to even look at my body . When at one time I use to look good healthy & fit. I was at both extremes but when I became hypothyroid in some ways it made things worse. Because if your hypothyroid your more prone to getting Cancer. And because your store more body fat especially if you over eat. Then you don't get rid of the toxins & it's hard to get rid of belly fat. I notice I have puffy eyelids & have a ball stomach like I'm pregnant. So I have started doing situps & more other exercises. I can't deal with this any longer. I don't even enjoy eating anymore. I only do because I have to I miss my flat stomach. I look like a tubulard when I look at myself.

Endos really don't care about thyroid patients, there's no $money in it
and they are over 8:29 run with diabetic patients they racks up more money and regarded as a much more serious health condition therefore more money. if you're a thyroid patient
so they throw cheap genetic levothyroxcin at you(which is poison) and tell you to come back once a year for labs maybe twice if you're lucky. I switched to name brand Sythroid and felt much better ever since on that brand. its $20 copay because it's name brand. but well worth it. if they told me the only thing I could take is genetic levo I would have a meltdown. your doctor must write the script specifically for Synthroid and you have to tell your pharmacy that you will not accept generic as a substitute. a pharmacist switch my prescription once because it was cheaper. and I adked him to refill it w my preferred brand and only that brand. if you happen to switch, alway check that you're getting synthroid brand. i open my bottle at the pharmacy.
thyroid medication is prescribed in mcg, micro grams genetic prescription can be vary inaccurate dosage anywhere up to 30% web search it. and if thats true then you way over medicated and you won't feel well. I didn't anyway. you also shouldn't eat 4 hours before or 4 house after your med. but if you do, no calcium, iron or high fiber foods as it interferes with absorption. if your taking supplements stop them 3 or 4 days before your lab as they may cause interference with the assay in the lab test . I read all this on synthroid manufacturer website. I had to hunt for it but I found it and glad I did. it was a sleepless night well spent.

Now we can tweak it with more knowledge about processed crap food and sugar, but I'm so tired of supplements promising this and that and not delivering...just eating clean and weights and some cardio can help us SO MUCH. But many don't want to do that, they want a pill or magic bullet cure that doesn't seem to exist 🤷‍♀️

I was deteriorating. I couldn't get out of bed. I struggled with bowel irregularities. I couldn't get my body heat up. My hands were freezing cold all the time. I was depressed, severely. My hair was falling out my skin dry and rough and my doctor wouldn't help me with it by increasing my thyroid. So I went on the Carnivore diet. I'm seeing improvements all the way around. I do eat seaweed sheets during the day. Those help me out a lot with fatigue. I eat a lot of butter, eggs, bacon and beef. My hair is growing back, and it's darker in color like when I was young. My eyebrows are coming in darker too. I feel like I'm reversing age. I hate vegetables and never plan on eating them again because after I eat them I feel weak and tired and constipated. If I get constipated I eat a lot more butter and it fixes the problem.

Sad part is it's very hard to hear from an endocrinologist that you are fine when you're not. Most of the time, the blood test comes back normal! Thyroid cancer runs in my family. All women in my close family has either Hashimoto, Hypothyroid, or goitre. One one my 1st cousin has thyroid cancer. I have a nodule (related to thyroid) that we are monitoring. I sure have the thyroid belly, but my endocrinologist keep saying I'm fine! My older sister (who has hypothyroidism) had same issue for a long time. Endocrinologist would say to her"you are fine"! but her neck was swollen (sign of thyroid issue). At the end, she finally got her diagnostic with hypo...so I don't trust endocrinologists, as to me, they are NOT listening to our symptoms, and are just good at saying "you're fine" despite the fact that we are falling apart.

I went on a carnivore diet 16 months ago and in the first 6 months I lost my visceral fat. I have Hashimoto's and have had the thyroid belly for 20 years. Sugar and carbs, and seed/vegetable oils, are what put fat on our bellies. Having thyroid disease seems to make that happen faster. I eat less than 10g of carbs/sugar per day and my visceral fat is gone. I'm losing weight and my belly is going down. I'm no longer bloated. The Standard Diet put this visceral fat on me and it's been wonderful to reverse that and get rid of it.

Gained over 100 lbs in those years, along with gaining depression and anxiety and gaining also the side effects from the perscriptions I was given to numb me from those conditions. Selenium is in brazil nuts, just eat 2 or 3 a day. Make sure to get plenty of the B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, and iodine. Seamoss (kelp, algae, seaweed) is great source of thyroid support, I've dropped 20 lbs in the last 4 months. Remember since the thyroid controls hormones, eating animal products that contain growth hormones can alter the levels of thyroid hormones. Make sure to be careful with dairy and meat. Why don't the doctors tell us these things so that we can actually HEAL the issue inside instead of just prescribing pills that cause side effects them more pills to offset the side effects?

@brandi6591 I know, I feel like I'm 80 years old most days 🙄 Prayers to you 🙏 and all of us struggling that we can find some help, or I atleast hope more researchers and physicians get more serious about women's health, if not in time for our struggles then at least for future generations. None of us deserve years of feeling like hell! I'm too young for this BS.

@@npkrn6764 I agree! I hope the best for you as well. Aging sucks and more doctors definitely DO need to learn more about hormones.

After having thyroid problem over 20 years, and being rather thin before, i have developed understanding what causes the low thyroid value and why you get overweight. Fish is these days fed with fish food and to the pool. This water does not contain iodine so our iodine intake from food is lowed from the times before. I'm totally sure of it. If you have low thyroid value, it is best to move to see coast, you get the iodine that way. But you have to do this before starting meds, you can't stop taking meds. The meds are not same as natural thyroid hormone. What happens is, that your metabolism actually fastens so, that you start eating more. This causes you gaining weight. I have managed to lose weight but only eating rice and some vegetables and sitting still. It is very important that you don't move that much when trying to lose your belly. I think the real reason for overweight is high metabolic rate, your system is changing substances so fast, that you keep eating. This is because your thyroid gland is trying to form thyroid hormone and can't do it. It's still trying even though you have enough hormone in your system. I'm NOT a doctor i only have had severe problem with my thyroid over 20 years and tried everything. Every one is different, so you have to try different solutions different foods etc. But this has been only way for me. I lost 10 pounds in about 6 weeks this way and i wasn't even hungry. And then started eat normally again and got all back. But try more starch, rice is best. And look that there is no saw dust or pulp in your food.

    Hi Doc Westin,
My wife had TT a year ago and she still didn’t get used to the meds. First tried with Levothyrodxnl and then switched to Levoxyl. She is feeling worst, weird one side head aches, extreme mood swings, depression etc. watching your videos, i think we need to include T3 which is missing in her meds. Can I please connect with you to discuss more details.

i've looked through several of your videos. of course those with the word "fast" in the title are the ones i clicked. unfortunately none of the remedies you explain work "fast". i was diagnosed with hashimotos in 2000 and on synthroid for 24 years. my thyroid is atrophied and the high/low phase gone finally. have years of heart palps and am obese now at 280 pounds. i tried some t3 but it caused more palps and my doctor said he would see me in the emergency room if i continued taking it. i ended up in ER on t4 meds as well since my heart is now diseased. i also have an endocrinologist. thryoid disease is miserable and the medical professionals don't get it. some people can catch their disease in earlier stages (few) and go on t3 and glad for them. people like me have tried every suggestion and guess what if you have a "normal" stressful life, you are likely not going to improve and certainly not "fast". maybe for a few years but this is a life sentence. i've tried every diet including carnivore and did feel awful on that. however i've also done the opposite starch solution and also didn't feel well. i think you should drop the "fast" from your video titles.

Extra virgin coconut oil diluted my mum’s visceral fat. All she did was taking a tea spoon of the oil a day for 8 months…

I wish there was some way to stop fluid retention. Some days my face and some parts of my body look so swollen I'm literally disgusted by myself. Next day I wake up and I look almost normal.

My belly always looks so distended that I do look about four months pregnant, but pinching the area suggests it’s very little fat that’s the problem. Help me! 😊😅😢

All the more reason to not compare your body with other's. I have a bloated belly but I'm certain I can out run most of the models with "perfect" bodies unless they train mostly as a runner.
