How to Increase Free T3 Naturally (7 Steps)

  • Is it possible to naturally increase free T3 levels? The answer is yes! There are actually two ways to do it.
The first way I call the easy way. This way is easy because it involves the use of thyroid medications like Cytomel and liothyronine. If you take T3 thyroid medication then you will increase your free t3 levels.
Unfortunately, it's not easy to get those medications from your doctor which is why we need to talk about the second way or the not-so-easy way! Fortunately, these things ARE within your control and are things that you can do.
Why should you care? Because T3 is the most biologically active thyroid hormone and is hundreds of times more powerful than T4.
Here are 6 things that you can do to increase your free T3 levels:
#1. Optimize key nutrients - zinc, selenium, Guggul, anti-oxidants, and anti-inflammatory nutrients.
These nutrients all help the T4 to T3 conversion process in various ways.
    #2. Improve your gut health
Up to 20% of thyroid conversion occurs in the gut. Even minor gut issues may impair conversion!
    #3. Reduce reverse T3 levels.
High reverse T3 levels may automatically reduce free T3 levels. If you can lower your reverse T3 then you will naturally increase free T3 levels.
    #4. Check your ferritin
Low iron and low ferritin result in abnormal T4:T3 ratios.
    #5. Focus on liver health
Improve liver health by eating vegetables that contain sulfur, cruciferous vegetables, avoid alcohol, take milk thistle, dandelion, turmeric, MSM, calcium d glucarate
    #6. Treat your adrenals
Adrenal function is related to thyroid function. Treating your thyroid does not necessarily or automatically treat your adrenals.
    #7. Exercise
Lastly, any type of exercise can naturally improve T4 and T3 levels!

This channel is such a great resource for anyone struggling with thyroid issues. I'm in England and the doctors here are pretty useless when it comes to thyroid issues. It's near impossible to get any testing done. I've improved my health mostly from free information like this video and a process of elimination.

Great video. It’s good you brought up the gut. Diet, diet, diet! Mental and physical chronic illness can all be resolved! Keto, carnivore any of those diets or lifestyles that increase eating of real food and cuts out refined carbohydrates and refined sugars. I have transformed our family of six life through my own accidental journey into keto through a singular physical ill-health episode in April/may 2023 which caused such pain under my left low rib cage that I had to take action (for once it wasn’t about weight… but it was 😂), a few months later my 16 year old angry “zombie” son started of his own volition… wow! 40lbs weight loss and personality transformation!!!!!! Next husband was nosey… next thing he no longer has stress or SIBO!! He used to hate work now he feels no stress because of keto, next thing 14 year old moody teenage son competitive with older brother gets involved…. Transformation!!! No more spots or moodiness (anger), then little ten year old slightly interested so she got rid of SIBO and some moodiness, finally the 15 year old angry 15 year old daughter vaguely curios so tried keto partially, and on those days or the day after she is so nice to live with!! (If she goes to her friends house and eats refined carbs for two days the following two days are pretty painful! Who knew there was this parallel universe out there where people were healthy and satisfied on keto all the while we poor crowd in the cheap seats were stuffing refined carbs in out gobs and driven by sugar addiction to anger were in the other lane, depressed, forlorn, unhealthy… I feel sorry for several women I know on thyroid medication but when I mention diet and supplements… they laugh at me thinking I’m a hippie!!! 😅 honestly, we live in the Upsidedown!! Anyway, at least we’re happy!!! ❤❤❤🎉

It took years to get my dr to try me on t3….and it works. I now have a new dr at the same office because mine left. He’s weird and if he takes my t3 away…I’ll end up in jail. I’m so bloody tired of idiot drs. Try to find a dr that knows nutrition..probably an older dr or a brand new one in herbs and supplements. Phone drs and just ask if they give t3. If you have hypothyroidism it’s great and also stick to low carb and high nutrition.

Unfortunately I am an over the road truck driver which makes it exceedingly hard to do many of the things that you are suggesting and I am trying to get off the road so that I can do those things because I do have both thyroid but I have done many good things and I am dropped my thyroid medication which i take the armor by a third of this last year. Hello Dr. Westin Childs. Thank you for the wonderful video and such a thorough explanation! You are undoubtedly super knowledgeable in your field of expertise, so i am taking a liberty to ask you here for advice.
I really hope you will read my comment and kindly get back to me with a suggestion, as i am at the end of the rope right now and feel suicidal most of the time.
I started to experience a bunch of worrisome symptoms about 3-4 weeks ago, - heart palpitations and all sorts of irregular heartbeats, tiredness, headaches, sudden hair loss, increased frequency of bathroom trips, messed up period, which started on the 18th day of my cycle and getting an ovary cyst(s) shortly after (i know their symptoms all too well, as i had them many years ago). I also started having trouble with sleeping (i barely slept in the last week or so), as well as getting easily fatigued, out of breath and sweating after even taking short walks, - something that is very unusual for me, as i am an overall a healthy and active individual.
And on top of all that, i started to feel hungrier as usual, gained few pounds already within a short period of time and began having bowl troubles, which is very unusual for me.
I feel hopeless, desperate and scared because of all this. I cry all the time.
I have been taking protein powder for 3.5 months prior to this, so it might be a reason of all these hormonal disturbances in my body. I have discontinued taking it, of course, as soon as i realized that it might have been the ultimate reason of my health issues.
On August 25th my extreme heart palpitations, painful heartbeats, as well numerous trips to the bathroom (about 9 at night) kept me awake pretty much all the night. I was scared and exhausted so i just headed to the emergency room the next day.
They run some tests. My TSH was elevated, - 5.06uIU/mL, but Free T4 was in the normal range, - 1.16 ng/dL. And they didn't check T3 levels.
Having all these results, i went to the doctor yesterday and tried to explain everything that was happening to me, begging her to check my hormones, - it was pretty much obvious that i was experiencing hormonal imbalances. I know my body very well.
The doctor prescribed me antibiotics from the urinary infection (even though i don't really have any other symptoms, other than frequent urination that would be indicative of it) and relaxants, blaming my "anxieties" for my sleepless nights and heart palpitations.
She did order a blood work for certain hormones and, according to them, my T3 was 77.22 (below norm), but TSH, surprisingly, went down from 5.06 on August 26th to 3.40uIU/mL on August 29th and Free T4 also decreased from 1.16 to 1.07ng/dL.
The last 2 are in the normal range now.
I just don't know whether there was an error somewhere or these numbers can change so much within 3 days only.
I am very spiritual by nature. As such, i believe in the healing powers of praying, energy healing, healing frequencies such as binaural beats etc.
Since my visit to the emergency room 4 days ago and seeing the "abnormal" results for my theroid, i started heavily listening to healing frequencies for the hormonal imbalances and i have also been listening to those for heart arrythmia for the last 1-2 weeks.
I also was implying some natural method (drinking mix of orange juice, garlic and apple cyder vinegar on an empty stomach in the morning) to resolve my cyst issues.
I may be impartial here, but i do think, i feel some improvements already.
My pain from ovary cyst was drastically reduced on the second day of me taking that mixture. I think it (or they, if there were multiple) might have erupted as a result of me drinking that juice, - i didn't experience the abdomen pain in the area of my ovaries on the second day already.
My heart palpitations have calmed somewhat as well. They are milder and less frequent now.
I also noticed some increased energy after i started listening to different healing frequencies, specifically designed for balancing hormonal disorders and imbalances. So maybe they did assist in lowering my TSH from 5.06 to 3.40 within 3 days already and it wasn't a mistake in a conducted blood work?
I hope, Doctor, you are still reading this, if reading at all..
So anyways, now that i saw my yesterday's lab result for my below norm T3 levels and seeing that i wasn't, most likely, going to get the adequate help from the doctors, who prescribe me Melatonin and antibiotics to treat my current condition, i am appealing to you here for help.. Please do kindly get back to me with the advice. I know, i can trust you, after seeing your video. I also know, that you wouldn't probably dismiss all my complaints, if i came to you with the above info, and would have, most likely, prescribed me a different set of medications.
Praying and hoping that you will read this and respond to me.
Thank you so much for your response in advance!!!

I had my thyroid removed 27 years ago. Watching you has informed me about my other medications that I take that could cause some of my symptoms. At the moment I am taking Omeprosol, prednisolone and a beta blocker, which I have been on for quite a few years. It makes me feel that I’m in a losing battle to get my thyroid to work correctly.

There are a number of questions from this video, isn't there? Also he talks too fast I miss some important phrases, maybe a few diagrams or other images may help with understanding what he is saying too. Another point is maybe deal with one thing in much shorter videos so we can absorb each piece of information at a time.

great information. as someone who is recovering from toxic mold exposure I have been forced to become an expert on the HPA Axis as mine is in pretty bad shape (fatigue that runs on a schedule linked to cortisol.) It has also crashed my thyroid; my RT3 levels are extremely elevated and my T3 (free) levels are on the very very low side of "normal." I'm working on getting my system back in order without ending up on thyroid meds that are very difficult to get off of once you start.

This is very enlightening thank you. I have been hypothyroid for about 30+ years and no one has ever told me anything , just that I need to take thyroxine. I am still waiting to feel great as I was promised. For the past year or so my tsh has been way high or way low and I have been tested and tablets changed every three months. My last test was just in range on the high side so I have been put back to yearly tests !! The doctors here in England don’t seem to be concerned with thyroid problems. I was once told by a rheumatologist that thyroxine doesn’t work for everyone and I will probably always be tired. That is the extent of help I have had. I have recently discovered ( through another problem) that my thyroid is atrophied but this was never added to my medical records. I just feel like there is no point in seeing my doctors anymore.

Thyroid hormones control your whole body. TSH is secreted from the Pituitary gland. I wish that I would have known more than twenty years ago. My TSH was 8. Dr Kettleman said I didn't need any synthroid supplements. I demanded further testing of thyroid hormones. T3 and T4. Free T3. Leptin levels and cortisol levels. Also I am insulin resistant. Makes my life constantly tired from morning to night. I sleep better during the day. Night shift worker in nursing for years.

As I'm not a medical person, I can only tell you what works for me.
#1 🌻 I have a loose sphincter muscle that allows acid back up my esophagus, this causing GERD. I did a lot of research and made 3 changes: removed from my diet all forms of caffeine (drinks, chocolate, etc.), all types of coffee (even decaf or mixed with milk), and all carbonated drinks. This pretty much eliminated the chronic bronchitis, sore throat, drainage down the back of my throat, esophagus spasms (which to stop, swallow small sips of something to drink quickly, one right after another, until the spasm is gone), bloating of the diaphragm, and all the other stuff that comes with stomach acid being where it doesn't belong. I did this over 9 years ago, and every so often I really want some "regular" tea or a glass of fizzy cola, and while I may be okay with a little glass at that moment, give it a few hours and bam! There are the symptoms and it usually takes a day or so to resolve. I try not to splurge too often. 😊
#2 🌻 For my leg cramps I have been taking almost every night berry CalMagPlus (2 tspns dissolved in 1/2 cup boiling water then add either 1/2 cup water or a lot of ice) and I now don't wake up with a Charley horse. 😊
#3 🌻 I take 3-4 NatureMade Extra Strength Vit D3 gummies (Strawberry, Peach, Mango/ 5000 iu per 2 gummies) every morning and sometimes the evening also. Since vitamin D absorbs best with fats, I try to take it with food, but half the time I don't. This has made a huge difference in my joint pain, fatigue, hair and skin. I mean a big difference! 😊
🌻 Anyway, those are 3 of the things I have found to make a world of difference. Hope this info might help you with your search for answers to have better health. 😊

Highly informative video with great information. I have multiple issues that you’ve covered. I have POTS and really struggling with gut health. Can you please do a video with some tips for POTS sufferers with thyroid problems? I have thyroid nodules and I believe one side is completely overtaken and the other about 1/2. My thyroid levels appear normal but I’m having hypothyroid symptoms. More thorough tests are needed but haven’t been able to see the endocrinologist this year. Hair loss, extreme dry hair, dry skin, excessive and chronic insomnia, extreme fatigue (mostly due to POTS but hard to tell), extreme weight loss then very fast weight gain when put on beta blocker for tachycardia in December. Not happy with my body changes. Two weeks ago went back on Keto lifestyle for overall health and energy is better. Carbs, sugar and gluten are not my friends. Despite the diet change, Still struggle with gastrointestinal problems, another thing that’s possibly complicated by POTS as I didn’t used to have these issues. I was diagnosed with thyroid nodules back in 2007. Diagnosed with POTS in December 2022, but it’s likely I’ve had it for more than a decade. Was previously diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, sleep deprivation, Adrenal Fatigue, Fibromyalgia and Hashimoto’s. They’re not certain but believe it was undiagnosed POTS all along or some overlapping conditions. I honestly don’t think we will ever know 100%. We’re still trying to determine causation. Potentially inherited. Exercise is difficult as I’m struggling with severe nausea and dizziness when standing even for short stretches, a few minutes. Some days are better than others. It’s worse after I’ve had a busy day out and about. My referral was accepted to see the head of neurology at UT Southwestern Hospital Neurology Department. Gathering medical records so the team there will be able to look at my complete history. Been doing a lot of research and already increased supplements for adrenal and liver health with the recommendation and support of my PCP. It’s going to take a village I think to manage this condition but I’m hopeful. Sleep is a huge problem. I feel better when I get more but POTS insomnia is worse than I have ever had and I’ve had insomnia since childhood. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Hey. Not the poster, and this might be a heavy question, but how's your mental health? There's a lot of research that backs up the idea that anxiety and specifically trauma underlie a lot of the symptoms and disorders you've mentioned. I've had a lot of success treating similar physical health problems - insomnia, fatigue, low thyroid, high cortisol and adrenal fatigue... Perhaps it's not relevant for you, but I wanted to mention just in case. ❤

I've been on liothyronine for years from my dr to help my T3 levels. It has dramatically improved my life and I havent noticed any downside, but I've been told by some that its not healthy and I know certain drs are very skeptical of it. I was told once it could impact my bone health as a woman, which made me go so far as to get a bone density test just to make sure it was normal. Do you think its safe to be on a T3 supplement long term? Do you think the skepticism is valid? What would the actual concerns or downsides be in your opinion, and what should I look out for or be worried about? Obviously I took note of your other advice to help in other ways and will continue work on all those things.
