  • If you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis then these 10 foods should be avoided. Did you know that the foods that you put into your mouth impact the course of Hashimoto's?
It's true, foods can either positively impact or negatively impact thyroid function and that includes people who have autoimmune thyroiditis.
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is both an autoimmune disease as well as a thyroid condition and both must be addressed if you want to see improvement.
The good news is that by changing your diet, it is possible to see an improvement in both immune function and thyroid function and potentially even reverse or halt the damage your immune system is doing to your thyroid gland.
This list of foods is notable for patients who have Hashimoto's because these food groups cause problems with either your immune system OR with thyroid function OR both.
If you have Hahsimoto's, make sure you are AVOIDING these foods.
Did any of these foods surprise you? Are you already avoiding them? Let me know below!

Im 57 and have been taking synthroid since I was 26. Around the age of 32 I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. No one explained anything. I have eaten what I wanted all my life. Im to the point I feel horrible all the time. Fatigue, can't sleep well, just utterly exhausted constantly. Thank you for your videos. Knowing what I do now maybe i can make an impact on how I feel. I am sick and tired of feeling sick and tired!

OK, I'm 77. Two years ago I was told I had Hashimotos disease, even though I've been on thyroid meds since my late 20s. Now all of a sudden I'm supposed to make these dramatic changes in my diet. I'm also pre-diabetic & watch my sugar intake & check my glucose levels periodically with my own monitor. The leaky gut thing & giving up glutin threw me. At 16 I had ulcers, from high stress. I got over it. I've never had stomach issues since, maybe occasional heartburn with something really spicy, but I found the main cause was sugar. Once I cut back on sugar, that went away. So I'm listening to you now & find glutin free just has to be for 60-90 days? Then what? I thought it had to be forever? Why dairy? I've never been a milk drinker, but I love halfnhalf in my coffee & tea (not to excess) cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese & the only problem I ever had with dairy is ice cream...it makes me phlegmy. I'm so confused at this point I've almost lost my appetite for anything. I thought your later years were supposed to be enjoyable?

I went a year on a dairy, gluten and processed sugar and foods. I was miserable. I went in at 100%. I didn't cheat I almost only ate food at home. I ended up being obsessed and became so anxious about food and being around people eating. I had to research a restaurant and if there was nothing I could eat I would either ask to go somewhere else or just not go. It seriously messed me up. I was doing all this under a naturopath that insisted I never eat any of these things again. After a year I had to stop. I lost a ton of weight but felt horrible and now had an eating disorder. I added dairy in first and slowly started feeling a bit better. Then I added back gluten and felt even better. When I added back processed foods/sugar. I started feeling a little worse. So I decided to just be very careful of the processed foods/sugar. and eat whatever else I wanted. 10 years later I'm still anxious around food and have had a few panic attacks eating out at restaurants. I try to eat a balance diet and consult a nutritionist to stay on track. I just want people to not do what I did and become obsessed with food. Eat in moderation and if you find you don't feel well after a particular food try to have it in very limited quantities. My number one trigger that makes me feel horrible are onions. I'm ok in very small quantities but have to be careful.

Hi. I too am 57 years old , and have had thyroid issues since early 30's. Was diagnosed with Hashimoto's 10 years ago, and kind of naturally avoided everything you mentioned. I eat everything I want, which is within those parameters, and forget I have this diagnosis. If I just roll with things, I' m good

OMG I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 41 and packed on 40 lbs in one year. I'm 69 now and no one ever said the word Hashimoto . I've tried every diet known to man with no results. None of this was ever explained. I feel so blessed to have found Dr. Child's Channel. Now maybe I can make some progress.

I followed this diet but then stopped, boy I’m feeling depressed and I have body aches. I’m been banking on coffee gluten and everything he mentioned. It is sad but everything he says is so truth. If you hashimoto, you won’t have a life because you can’t anything that everyone else can. It is so depressing, but I have to go back to eating non gluten and avoid alcohol.

As a Celiac with Dermatitis Herpetiformis (a skin manifestation that affects 10 to 25% of Celiacs), even a small amount of iodine can severely aggravate eruptions. In my experience, keeping 100% gluten free will eliminate all DH symptoms, but even a pinch of gluten contamination can set off painful sores and blistering. If I am also consuming iodine, the symptoms are much worse.

Going gluten free has helped with my thyroid inflammation tremendously. I am really glad you said coffee was bad for the thyroid of Hashimoto's patients. Everyone I know drinks an obsessive amount of coffee and asks me why I don't do the same. I have tried in the past to drink coffee with all the cool kids. But I always felt sick, tired, unhealthy! Then I started getting migraines. They were so bad I would throw up. After some research (it's nearly impossible to find anyone who says coffee can be bad for some people), I suspected coffee might be the culprit. After going completely caffeine free (giving up green tea and chocolate was harder than giving up coffee), I no longer have any headaches at all. When I tell people I don't drink or eat any caffeine they usually are shocked or feel sorry for me but I feel the best I've ever felt. People I know are so addicted to coffee (they even wear shirts admitting their love affair with coffee) that when I ever suggest they give it up, a fight is sure to ensue, so I keep my mouth shut. I am grateful to know to cure to my headaches and fatigue-ditching caffeine.
