I'm a redbubble artist and the only times redbubble gives a shit about copyright infringement is if it's a massive company. When I was new to redbubble I uploaded a harry potter fanart thing I drew and it was taken down almost immediately for intellectual property. I then understood that even fanart isn't okay to sell when it infringes upon somebody else's brand, which made sense. HOWEVER, in the following months I began to see completely stolen art and/or intellectual property theft from plenty of other artists, so I did a bunch of searches to figure out what content was being blocked, and I found that you can get away with selling pretty much anything on redbubble as long as it's not owned by disney or a main character in a popular anime.
I know it isn’t what you meant, but you said Disney or anime are off limits, and then mentioned Harry Potter and all I can see if an anime version of Harry Potter 😂
thanks for bringing this up cos it's honestly something about redbubble that bugs me so much lol! the worst thing is that i did an artwork that was based on snow white (as in the brothers grimm story, published in 1812) and it got taken down because they assumed it was based on the disney version (despite looking literally nothing like the disney version but go off i guess lol)... it's just frustrating that they let people upload complete stolen crap like in the vid but an actual artwork someone spent hours on but happens to have the same title as some film made in the 30s?? not allowed apparently lol
Yeah I think they mostly take things down if a company that owns the IP gets in touch with them but I think they've gotten more strict in the past like two years
@@parkerknight8738 haha yeah sorry i meant like real big companies in general like warner bros and stuff but yeah i probably should have used a better example haha:p anyway yeah disney is just the strictest when it comes to getting stuff taken down on redbubble
I had that same experience when I first uploaded to red bubble. My art was very loosely based on Harry Potter and twin peaks and it got taken down immediately. But scrolling through there is so much stolen crap that gets to stay up… I don’t get it.
redbubble also sucks for artists, sold $11 of merch with my own art on it and out of those $11 i only get $2, but wait! i cant get any money from them until i make $20 PLUS! they took down one of my artworks of trans characters for 'copyright infringement' i HATE that site

my sister is an artist who has some stuff on redbubble (that is her own original artwork obviously) and they basically only throw her a few cents on every sale. so the "we love artists" shtick is extra annoying
Yup. I have a shop with 100% original designs and I get I think a 5% cut of the purchase price? So like, 5 cents for the most frequently purchased stickers (matte small stickers). I made maybe 40$ last year but only half of that were actual customers, the rest was my mom lmaooooo
Tbh I just use it so I can have some semi-decent merch of my OCs. I don’t even put an actual percentage and instead change it to 0%. I wish there was a better printing company.
Oh same. I’ve sold shirts and phone cases before and while they cost like $30 for the consumer I only get sent like 50c for each transaction. Sometimes even less than that.
@@cisrot okay so yeah redbubble is rather garbage but you should definitely be making more than that? the default artist cut is 20% (you can adjust this), i love getting the tough phone case purchases bc i actually get like $5 off of it maybe

@@ZaynahZihoa Yup, I actually started to follow really cool artists through Redbubble. Buyers need to check the authenticity of the artist, Redbubble needs to hire someone to moderate what is uploaded there.
@@ZaynahZihoa yeah tbh it makes me sad, because i use it for my stream “merch” and we only use our own designs. its upsetting for legit artists on the site
that's entirely unfair. so many genuinely amazing artists use redbubble and the quality of their shirts and sweatshirts has always been really really good. the company isn't stinky, the people ripping off youtubers are.
Fun Fact: The printing method for the knock off merch is sublimation. The ink turns into a gas and fuses with the fabric to make the print and can only fuse to synthetic fabrics like polyester. That's why the material sucks so bad! It's basically plastic

and I hope it horrifies you that I have my self mutilation surgery scheduled! oh no! what will happen when I chop off my tits?? probably global collapse!
It's honestly a shame because redbubble and sites like it make it so much simpler for artists to sell merch, especially if they don't have access to materials, live somewhere far from most of their customers, or just don't have the capital to really get started. Like these sites do help artists A LOT and that can't be understated. But they hurt them just as much due to just not caring about double-checking, it seems
They really don;t. Noone is making a living on making mediocre art that has the sole purpose of being printed on child-labour stickers and if they are they are probably not really living their best. This site is just dead-ass cancer.
@@beric0bartman yes, they are. I wouldn't say "making a living" but many artist I've followed on IG use redbubble to sell their merch. The site is very bad, but it is also very convenient for some artists.

I’ll also say, I never got a chance to buy one obviously, but I wanted to just compliment your youtooz and Kiwi plush, absolutely banging, what a cute Pupper.
As a very small artist who sells on Redbubble I gotta say it’s amazingly accessible for selling, since it’s the most popular print-on-demand service. There’s absolutely no cost for artists and you can upload art within minutes and make a few dollars on the side from art that you already made anyway. It’s especially good for stickers, but the profit margins are god awful and there’s such a massive problem with art theft on there. It’s not all bad though, regardless.
same! as a smaller artist its hard as hell to sell ya own things on sites like etsy where you need to put in all the work and money yourself, especially when you dont even know if youre even gonna make any sales to get any of it back (or even have enough time and money to do that in the first place)
yeah redbubble is really good for small artists !! the main issue with it is people slapping official art or photos of content creators and stuff on there and making a shitton of money off of images they don't own
Yeah, I know he was dumping on the site, which he is completely in the right for, but telling people to avoid Redbubble altogether kinda fucks over the legitimate small artists who use it.
@@arat9648 That's still going to be a few thousand people who are going to avoid the website. Just because YOU don't think it'll do anything doesn't make it a reality.
as an artist who has a redbubble store, i can tell you right now that redbubble does care about copyright.........but only if its the copyright of a corporation large enough to be an actual threat. if you try to sell fanart of anything owned by disney, nintendo, warner bros, etc, itll get taken down in a week. but they dont give a crap about anyone worth less than $500 million.
That’s been my experience too mostly, but I’ve noticed people can make fanart of big artists like Billie Eilish and it’s left up, yet other stuff will be taken down?? It’s so confusing, I never know what’s okay to upload fanart of
A crazy thing that happened to me I uploaded a design I made on redbubble with the powerpuff girls hearts & that said “powerful girl” & it got taken down but I contested & it got reinstated meanwhile people are able to upload literal powerpuff girls designs on merch & sell them as their own I’m still confused about how that works🙃
@@y2jaysha861 So, basically the reason there is like all these rip-off things on RedBubbles is people make just a bunch of bot accounts. That way if one of the accounts or one of the designs does get flagged for IP theft, they have about 50 other accounts that has mass stolen art on it.
So I completely agree Kurtis, people shouldn’t make low quality merch just to capitalize on fans of content creators. It sucks that creators get tarnished reputations and don’t even get a a cent from it …… But that fit tho
There's also a pretty proven theory that if you comment "this should be a t-shirt" under a piece of art online, a bot will make it into a shirt on red bubble and similar websites. It's gross.
That wasn’t redbubble, it was a bot that stole designs from Twitter using that phrase and similar for a different website. I believe it wound up getting shut down by Disney.
to people who can't afford official merch: instead of buying knockoffs, thrift a hoodie and diy a fan design for yourself! it'll be cool and one of a kind! edit: it's important that you shouldn't try to do this for profit; you'de be just like the knock-offs in this video, dude
And there's also a good chance it will come out looking better than the knock-off! Cheap prints have a tendency to be dull and stretch / crack after some time
Yeah! If you can't diy a fan design for any reason, you can also just print off your design as a patch and iron it on, embroider the artist's name, or pay to have the name printed on. As long as you're not stealing art, it's fine!
That’s what I do! Just recently I painted my cloth wallet with the spiral on my profile picture and I had painted a couple shirts and sneakers. It’s pretty cool cause it feels unique and more authentic than just stealing and printing someone else’s work.
This video is funny, but I'm becoming increasingly more uncomfortable with how much Kurtis's curly mullet and mustache looks like pictures I have seen of my dad in the late 80s. I just can't laugh at a skinny clone of my dad in good conscience.
ok, wait... no, like that outfit is actually a serve. Kurtis killed it, he's just too humble to know it.

what’s so wild to me, as a redbubble creator, is how they pick and choose who gets copyright claimed for this kind of stuff. i obviously post my own art on there, but when i uploaded a woodstock poster i designed myself it got removed from redbubble by the record label who owns JANIS JOPLIN lmaoo. like the poster was my design, the fonts and color schemes were mine, the typography layout was mine, i even stylistically changed the picture of janis but i guess just “using someone’s likeness” is enough get your art removed. that’s why im pissed to no end when i get on the site and see so much ripped off art still on the site and selling. just baffling to me.
Same here! I post my art on redbubble cause selling to the US market for me is frankly impossible but I get copyright claimed SO OFTEN for things that are my original concepts it's honestly super frustrating. I've kind of stopped posting things there and it has definitely slashed my income but the website is literally so frustrating to work with.

something we all need to remember when it comes to garment production and purchasing- when it's super cheap (like on redbubble or wish), it's because someone's not getting paid! And it's usually the people working in the factories.
True! Not even just with super cheap stuff though. Sadly it's a majority of the garment industry. Research where you buy your clothes! Slow fashion can definitely be more expensive but if you buy less clothes, thrift, and save up for better quality pieces then it can be more affordable. Even if you're plus size like meeeee

Kurtis’ “YYU-Yee Yee University” is my favorite sweatshirt because I can wear it wherever. People actually think it’s from a University and then start laughing when they read the full thing. It’s a great conversation starter and everyone likes it as much as I do! A couple people even bought one when I told them where it’s from. Support creators.
Redbubble is actually meant for artists to sell their own art and it’s really frustrating to see how much art gets stolen and uploaded there. Many accounts get false flagged for copyright infringement out of the blue but if you report someone for it, it almost always goes unnoticed
yeah yeah the fit is fire, the quality is smelly, whatever... but the fact that Kurtis has a framed Mona Lisa in his home is so funny and on brand for him
Anything with the Mona Lisa is not considered a stolen piece of art. The Mona Lisa is publicly owned meaning the public owns the imagine of the painting, not an individual artist or company. Anyone can use a public domain work without obtaining permission, but no one can ever officially own it.

That way if one of the accounts or one of the designs does get flagged for IP theft, they have about 50 other accounts that has mass stolen art on it.

to people who can't afford official merch: instead of buying knockoffs, thrift a hoodie and diy a fan design for yourself! it'll be cool and one of a kind!
edit: it's important that you shouldn't try to do this for profit; you'de be just like the knock-offs in this video, dude
And there's also a good chance it will come out looking better than the knock-off! Cheap prints have a tendency to be dull and stretch / crack after some time
OMG I SHOULD DO THIS THANKS!!
Yeah! If you can't diy a fan design for any reason, you can also just print off your design as a patch and iron it on, embroider the artist's name, or pay to have the name printed on. As long as you're not stealing art, it's fine!

@@Dunbie_ I think it has to be a bot, the replies don't make any sense
Anything with the Mona Lisa is not considered a stolen piece of art. The Mona Lisa is publicly owned meaning the public owns the imagine of the painting, not an individual artist or company. Anyone can use a public domain work without obtaining permission, but no one can ever officially own it.
@@kelsey8447 I think you misunderstood, they weren't saying that he stole the art, just that it's funny he has it
@@bunnies9335 I didn't misunderstand. I put my comment because there are others in the comment section calling him a hypocrite for having it. This person's comment is a top comment and wanted to inform people that using the Mona Lisa is not the same as what some people are doing on Redbubble of stealing artwork.
Truthfully, the scarf was a serve. Please steal it back and make merch out of it.
I think billowing white scarves with tiny images of RUclipsrs in the very center is this year's next hottest look.

Uhhhh holy shit. Did not expect a massive throwback song to appear
The way he's rocking that skirt is giving me gender envy even if the outfit burns my eyes.
