  • Hello everyone, and welcome back! While I am just getting back into things, I thought I would share part of a discussion had with good friend, Daniel, over at O.G. Rose, where we discuss the literature and philosophy of Franz Kafka. The section of the conversation here is considering the significance, or interpretation of the panther in Kafka’s The Hunger Artist. You can find below everything mentioned in the introduction to this video!

    I've always felt that Kafka was able to express an agony that is uniquely human. The part of us that looks for certainty by perceiving ourselves and the world through polarities that we classify as good or evil, and the suffering that comes from the cultivated inability to accept that the world and the individual is a synthesis of polarities, neither end of which can be completely rejected without destroying the other and thus the whole.

    Great video. I used to teach the Hunger Artist in the workshops I taught while in grad school. Kafka was a genius, ahead of his time. Great video. Fresh takes. Oh! I would love to hear your thoughts on Either/Or. It is foundational in understanding his work over all. I think you would really like O.G. Rose's channel and what he discusses there!😎

  • @GreenerSideOfSam
    @GreenerSideOfSam 2 года назад +3

    This discussion was great, especially when O.G Rose brings up how the panther is itself, it just is, and how the hunger artist can only ever become animal-like. This immediately made me think of everydayness and noneverydayness (probably because that’s what I just studied hahaha). Now what I say here may be off, but I still thought it was something interesting to think about! 😊
    The panther seems to be in a state of everydayness where it just is and it cannot be anything else, but a panther. Based on our understanding of animals, the panther does not reflect on what it means to be, but rather is in the constant motion of being a panther. The hunger artist on the other hand sounds like he is trying to achieve success in becoming an animal as the panther is. However, as soon as the hunger artist observes that he is striving toward being an animal he seems to be put in a state of noneverydayness so he can only be animal-like. By being in the state of observing his being then can’t be the thing that he’s observing. (I am using this comment and video to help me with more examples to study it seems hahaha 😂🤣)
    Now it sounds like, when talking about the art and entertainment, the panther can only be a form of entertainment because there is no internal reflection of being and strive to be towards something. Although I could be very off on this as well, this discussion had a lot of elements to think about!! 😊

    • @attention5638
      @attention5638  2 года назад +1

      Yes! Really great point on the panther, and I think Daniel has very similar comments in the full conversation. And to add to that, before the panther, the hunger artist is the artist in motion, but with the introduction of the other, in this case, the panther, the artist is in a changed position, not by his own fault, but by the way he is viewed in contrast with the other.
      "the panther can only be a form of entertainment because there is no internal reflection of being and strive to be towards something." This is perfect! Absolutely--the panther's internal progress is instinct, while the artist's internal reflection goes completely against instinct. Going against instinct is the art--this could actually be said about all artists in a modern sense.

    This is good - yeah, not being able to know what other people are thinking is torture for me!! I know they say what people think about you is none of your business, but I disagree! LOL I need to know, and not being able to know drives me crazy! And yes, spot on about only believeing the one person who doesn't like what you've done, or doesn't beleive in your talents. Example - I've had countless people tell me they love my singing voice, but the one that sticks in my head and fills me with doubt was the one who said, "you can't sing" (which happened to be my mother, lol). We don't know for certain the admiration is honest, but we also don't know if the put down is honest... yet that is what our brains tell us to believe. Yea, maybe I should have been a panther.
