Head is considered your crown(ego) where as feet is considered a place lowest in your body so a symbol of humbleness. Touching the feet makes a person humble and the elder will naturally bless you with emotions. Its energy exchange.
However if someone uses feet on your luggage or object it’s disrespectful because to him lower emotions or vibration is supreme. To him its a show of power. Feet in General is not an object of disrespect but how you connect your emotion with it will make it.

The fact that when you are touching feet and the person giving the blessing (aashirwaad) hands are on your head, it is said that a circuit of energy flowing from the elder into you and back into him is complete and the words or blessings given to you have the desired eefect.

I think most Indians understand foreigners come from a very different culture and even if they happen to do something culturally disrespectful, people do understand it is not intentional and people are tolerant about it usually.
At the end, it is and it will always be 'Atithi Devo Bhava' ❤️
And with such a diverse country as ours, where we ourselves don't know each others customs and culture properly, common unifying things of identity such as the flag is bound to get paramount respect & reverence, as it keeps us tied together.

The practice of touching the feet of elders was adopted in India during the Vedic period and is called Charan Sparsh (charan means 'feet' and sparsh means 'touch'). According to the Hindu tradition, when you touch the feet of an elder person, you are in turn blessed with knowledge, intellect, strength and fame (lol). However, in spiritually it’s considered as exchanging of vibes, vibes taken by a person who is bare footed takes vibrations from earth and then transfers it in the next person who is touching their feet. Feet of children are also touched by elder on some occasions.

Touching feet is sending multi layered messaging and symbolism.
    1. Bowing down is equal to bowing to the experience they have garnered which is obviously more than yours.
    2. It helps to break the ice with the elder allowing them to understand that you do respect them and that allows them to set aside their egos and take you objectively. So difficult topics can be managed better.
    3. They have to bless you and bring about a smile on their face.
    4. Indicates the person touching the feet is very respectful of the elder the way they touch the feet and you can gauge that their exists a relationship.
    5. Normal namaste is good enough to greet strangers but seniors in your field, family, faith Indians try to bow by themselves.

    Very good analysis ❤️
    About Touching feet -
this tradition has been in practice in India since the ancient Vedic Hindu culture thousands of years ago and continues till date.
You don't have to touch every elder's feet that you meet but only of the elders in your family and close relatives. To others you can just say Namaste.
We touch feet to get blessings from them and show respect. Touching the feet has spiritual, moral and scientific significance.
Talking about putting feet on some other object is seen as disrespectful because in Hindu culture we try to give respect to every thing possible. This is a Vedic culture where we worship nature like the Sun, rivers, idol worship, fire, land etc..

Touching feet of elders is like they are more like your teachers.. Whatever you are because they have contributed to your well being.
Its not just elders we bow down to.. We also bow down to the girls and ladies of the house because of their so many sacrifices we are what we are .. So according to me its like a sign of respect.

Our cultural teaches us to look at every thing / being as equal value, as the creation has not made any discrimination, every thing is equally important at its place, so we should never look upto some thing or look down at some thing. When it comes to touching feet and putting your feet over something are identified as two different gestures. When you are touching to someone's feet or in other words bow down to someone it's not because they are greatly being (as you mentioned in video), we bow down simply because elderly people have more experience this life few years before of us and we bow-down to their wisdom their qualities and experience of life, and when someone touches the feet usually elderly people would place their palm over the head of the one touching his/her feet with certain sense of well-wish, which based on yogic-sinenc is an act of passing on the wisdom (passing positive energy / vibes) to one who is bowing down to you. So touching (based on yogic science One actually don't need to touch feet but simply bow down and touch the ground near feet, that's the actual way and you make physical contact to the feet of very few peoples including immediate parents /grand parents, Guru etc., there are multiple elaborate ways of doing this act based on the situation) feet (bow down to someone) is to enhance our experience of life. Where as when you step over some thing is identified as (conscious /subconscious) act of looking down at some thing ( consciously / subconsciously boosting your ego), which will eventually dominate your way of thinking and your experience of life , this will bring false sense of being superior (where as creator has not made any such discrimination, regardless of your materialistic achievements ) which is will limit your experience as life to limited ego that you have gathered. Same is applicable with you bow down to deities in temples it's an act of enhancing your life experience by requesting to pass on wisdom and knowledge in form of energy, these gestures when conducted much more consciously during ancient times, but past centuries of invasions and colonization has destroyed the consciousness and basis of this profound actions. Now a days many conduct this act as a tradition or way of conserving this culture, but the fact is Most of the gestures and traditions in India have deep connections with such Spiritual process of enhancing well-being, it would be very difficult to explain every aspect about it on comments Also many such aspects have been purposefully been passed down with different identification to location community etc in order to protect it from being eradicated.

I have been watching your videos and really admire your journey. Even compared to an Indian you have a fair bit of understanding about us and still you have a very good judgement of your understanding. I just want to contribute to your view on why foreigners should not comment on politics. In my view, this is not because they are disrespectful but because on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 being least wrong and 10 being extremely wrong. They mostly score a 15. I am not even exaggerating but there are such blaring gaps in their understanding of history and culture that just does not allow to have an informed opinion. I am born and brought up in India and avidly read about Indian history and have lived in 5 distinctly different states. But even I won’t express my opinion with a 100% confidence, because just learning about our religious scriptures will take 2 lives. So yes if a foreigner wants to make empty sensational comments and becomes famous overnight, they are most welcome to but it only makes them look ignorant and lazy and frankly arrogant.
Great work, but don’t be so scared of us. We don’t bite! Just kidding! 😹

In UP, men generally touch the feet of most of the women in the family irrespective of their relative age. For eg. we have to touch sisters' feet (cousin as well) even if she is 1 year old. But you don't have to do that on daily basis. It's generally done when you meet them after a long time or you are saying goodbye to them.

The attitude is often I’m in Asia so it doesn’t matter how I dress, bicycle shorts with a slit right up the side and scraggly beards are fine. Be more modest I would say. Observe. Feet. Touching. Pointing. Head covering or not. Go with the culture or cultures. Maybe I have become too conservative after living so long in Asia.

So, touching feet and keeping your feet ...you can imagine this way to get the confusion out..NOTE: it's just a way to help you to differentiate..but this is/may not be the exact thing..but this can help you relate
We believe..feet are considered the lowest/dirtiest part of the human body..
So, if you're keeping your feet on something, kicking, removing things with your feet..that means you think "that thing or person or where your feet touched" is inferior/lower to your feet..and you don't respect it (for example that person who kept his leg on your luggage thinks he is more important that you and your luggage) and that is Rude.
So, now touching feet is like.. "Yes I am under you (Below your feet - hypothetically). You're above me (respect-wise). Please bless me."
I hope I made sense. So, basically..Imagine the feet as a hierarchy - below and above! Where, if you keep your feet on top of something of your own, you're rude..because no one told you that you're superior.
But, if I touch your feet, I agree and approve that I am below you!!

when person touches legs to take blessings, its the top of leg, which is usually clean whereas when person steps on your luggage or anything, he touches it with bottom of feet, which is in contact with dust/sweat and very dirty.

The first point is that it is a gesture to show respect. The person who is touching the feet is showing how much respect he or she has for the other person. It is said that you must touch the feet of a person only when you actually respect him or her from the core of your heart.
The Indian children are taught from a young age that they must touch the feet of the elders in the family. The elders place their hands on the head of the child and bless them. Some typical occasions when you are supposed to touch the feet of the elders are:
    1. When you are about to start something new
    2. On your birthdays or just after your wedding so that you are blessed
    3. When you are going on a long journey
    4. When you are going for an exam
    5. On festive occasions the blessings of the elders is a must

Touching the feet is an ancient scientific technique, when we touch the feet of the elders with our hands, the elders simultaneously, touch our head from their hands, the energy flows from their hands to the head, this process makes the cycle of flowing energy. That guy Karl Rock knew nothing what CAA was, it's a law to fast track the citizenship granting process for the people who are Hindu's,Sikhs, Christians and Buddhists who have come to India from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh because they were persecuted over there and have refused to go back to their countries and have sought asylum in India and have been living here in India in very poor conditions because due to lack of citizenship they can't have any basic rights which the Indian citizenship guarantees. If anybody have any doubts then he/she is welcome to go and see for themselves in what sort of poor conditions those people are living in.What Karl and his wife were doing at those politically motivated protests were mocking those poor people who ran away from those three to save their lives and the lives and dignity of their daughters who were being forcefully abducted, raped, converted and married to some old man belonging to the majority community over there. Even 10-12 years old girls weren't even spared. That guy Karl Rock and his woke wife made a mockery of themselves while virtue signaling at those politically motivated protests. Good he has been barred from entering India.

Good video. One important topic foreigners better don't talk about is Religion and I was expecting you to include that.
As a Asian society, we almost all Asians have respect culture with elders. In India in particular, since ancient times Sanatana Dharma emphasize on touching feet of elders as they are considered more experienced in life and are supposed to guide you with all that experience. There are other more important reasons ( pretty much rational and valid in old times ) given in ancient Hindu, Jain, Buddhist texts. But yes touch feet only if you know they are clean 😊 otherwise you can bow and extend hand till their feet without actually touching it ( today many urban youth do that ). Be polite and respectful to them and understand they had different time and situations in life so don't get disrespectful to them. Listen and give it a thought. If you find their advise of any use, count it and move on.
For understanding use of Indian flag, kindly refer to 'Flag Code of India '. It's a simple law to regulate use of the flag and to protect its dignity. 🇮🇳
Use of background music was really good Ivana. You sound wise when you say it's their for a reason that one might not know. Have a good day 😊

  • @Bhargava_P

strictly speaking you should never touch the feet of anybody except a very few people : Parents (and their parents if alive), Husband, Guru who blessed you with a mantra for your spiritual upliftment and only if that Guru permits touching feet (not any other teacher or Guru who taught you something). To all other elderly people and teachers, as a mark of respect you should only touch the ground below their feet and then touch your forehead. The reason is, whenever you touch someone's feet, you are not only taking their blessings but you are taking some of their Karma as well (it could be good or bad sometimes) and this does not apply to the exempted people I've mentioned earlier. Most of the orthodox hindus and in general vedic pandits know all these and it's part of their daily routine.

  • @---------------------------...

Politics and religions are better left alone since foreigners may not understand its intricacies, as you rightly said. Hell, even Indians from different states may not know each other that well. Or urban folks may not understand the perspective of a rural society. It's easy to pass a judgement with superficial and simplistic information. Best would be to go with an open mind and listen more IMO.
Not just colonial, but history even before that forms layers in the Indian psyche. Certain attitudes can be an effect of certain experiences lived for hundreds of years.

Thank you so much for bringing out these topics and specially your point on politics is noteworthy. I think it not only applies to foreigners coming to India but also Indians traveling abroad.
I was in US during Trump's tenure and I was cautious when I spoke about the president or what the party was doing.. if ever I had to get into discussion with a colleague or even a Uber driver, I always thought to myself if I really knew w that much about US, their culture, their history to even comment on anything, and then my response would be appropriate enough to not hurt anyone..
Also thank you for bringing out Indian flag thing. Because it's true, we don't generally use our flag like western countries do and that is something that will be very useful for any foreigner visiting India.

I'm confused about the feet too, since people eat on the floor with their feet next to it or they do handcrafts like furniture with their feet holding the object, there is even a peeler which you hold with your feet, so maybe its in connection with other people that feet become considered "unclean"

    • @exvshu2304
      @exvshu2304 2 года назад

When we sit on the floor cross-legged the feet will usually point in a direction to the person next to you on your both sides, (also the food near you) its unavoidable. Sometimes we do care not to collide feets with the person sitting next to you, unless they are friends, or lets just say there are more people, the situation is unpretentious.
About the furniture, its still in the making process usually involving people. But its disrespectful, lets just say, if you keep your legs on the same sofa on which an elder person is sitting on, even if they are few feets away.
The peeler is a good thing you pointed out, for some women its easier and faster to cut things that way but they make sure the vegetables/fruits cut fall directly into the utensil and not touch the feets.

Touching the feet is actually "touch the feet and touch your head with that hand", but the intensity of these actions depend from person to person and their beliefs. It is a way of representing "the elders who have experienced the world before us, even the dust at their feet is far valuable and experience laden. Even their dust is worth more our gold". So touching the elder's feet and then touching your own head means that u are taking the experience and the knowledge that they have walked through and respecting that (as "below the feet" is considered shameful or dirty while "above the head" symbolizes pride and respect). That is, our heads(pride) don't even reach the feet of those elders who have lived longer than us.
But it is not super common. It is mostly done among the close-knit families or people that we hold as dear as a family(where I come from) and usually reserved for the people who are your parent's age or more. Siblings and cousins generally don't do this unless there is a special occasion or religious festival. And it is also not usually seen among friends or people within a similar age group. For all those cases, Namaste or a normal greeting like"Hi or Hello" is more than enough.

Awesome. These tips don't just apply to foreigners. About the feet, it's the soles stepping on things/living beings that is considered disrespectful including on the flag or currency notes as that gives an impression that you intend to crush those. If that happens inadvertently you just dust and bring it to forehead as an apology. If it's an object you cannot pick or a fellow human being, just give a millisecond touch and then touch yourself expressing an apology. Most of the time you won't even need to say SORRY using this gesture. People will understand just fine. Though I had a hard time controlling my hand from touching the people when in Europe. Have had some serious weird looks as brown people are considered hippies.

In indian culture feets are considered as the least respected part of the body because its work is to serve the body and the most respected part is your head and when you touch the feets of your elders it shows that you are nothing infront of your elders and then you touch your head that means the feets of your elders are as equivalent to your head
In simple words we consider that we shouldn't have any kind of ego or pride of ourselves infront of our elders ! Hope this clarifies your confusion

1.) Keeping your feet on something is bad or disrespectful because,
a.) We have not ultra clean places to walk and the feet gets dirty and if we put if on something this will contaminate and spread germs.
b.) This is scientific too about germs mainly, n became a tradition and seen as disrespect as you spreading germs and not caring about other that get sick by germs.
2.) For blessings we touch the above part of feet( now a days people touch knees) and that elder person's feet is not on our hand... We just touch it from above. And its seen as a surrender type. While we don't touch feet of every elder, onlh that are closed ones. And to other elders we say namaste. By joining our hands.
