I can imagine how difficult it maybe to decide if they are genuine or fake this police guy really seemed genuine and kind to keep you safe have a good weekend.
Not sure if it’s keeping him safe or preventing him from “spying” or colluding with locals. What a country. It is not entirely sure he was being nice or simply monitoring and controlling your movements
@@SusanHopkinson I can tell you, if he was spying, he would have never confronted him and kept an eye on him from afar. He confronted him, talked to him and also mentioned that he got a called that a foreigner was roaming so give him security. Police here are concerned about foreigner safety so that it doesn’t affect our tourism and country’s image globally.
@@SusanHopkinson Its same in India for people from pakistan and bangladesh. you are allowed to visit only previously declared 3 cities. You have to report to the local police station when you visit the city and inform them where you will be staying. Earlier they always used to put one plainclothesman to either accompany you or follow you discretely. Same happened in pakistan to Indian Nationals. Since Karl is living in India for long time and married to an Indian Im surprised this is the first time its happened to him.
@@SusanHopkinson thats over exaggeration, that man earlier maybe was a off duty police head of a constable enjoying some fish, he probably called the policeman who was under his command, recently there was an attack on chinese nationals, so security is provided to foreigners and if you think they were spying, then this is 21st century age of It and technology, its easy to spy without confronting...so kudos.
The police officer really dealt with the situation well. He was respectful and insisted politely. Actually makes me happy that our neighbour country is doing its best to ensure security of the travellers. Its rare to see in our subcontinent.
However I thought police all around the world need to be reasonably fit as you sometimes have to run to catch criminals or muggers but looking at this particular police man's big stomach, not sure he would have the fitness & stamina to chase any criminal at all!
Why so reasonable.? Oh for heavens sake 85% of the world's people are just the same. It's not normal to look out for tourists they're just ordinary people who travelled to a different part of our Planet. We should all be able to go where we want.
Reading people and situations in a completely different culture isn't always easy. The first security guy was worried and told the cop, the cop then decided it was necessary to come find you and escort you to your hotel. Two locals were concerned for your safety so maybe there was a very good reason for this?
The first security personnel must have been a superior officer. He simply called his people in the station to send a cop as Karl's protection detail that evening. I guess the officer had overheard a threatening chatters against Karl as a marked man. That was why he had instructed his men as such. There probably other protection details shadowing them at their front and back till Karl left that place since that time.
His actual arrogance is going to get him toe jewelry! You NEVER go to a country thinking you know everything about said country. You are unarmed, no armed back up, lacking hubris, and situational awareness; in a extremely hostile area. You dismissed the officer (by the tone of his voice) you were in the middle of a nest.
As a Pakistani Karl, I need to let you know, you can pretty much identify if the guy is telling you the truth or not by their inflections. This guy was genuinely concerned for your well being. The fact that he thought it hilarious when you said the place is safe proves that he was genuinely concerned. The hotel owner/staff also knew the guy well enough to offer him Sprite as well. While Pakistan is for the most part a beautiful country, like any other country we too have our rotten apples. This guy was there to keep them as far away from you as possible. @@sidneysaad1 I don’t think it’s because he got one of the “good ones”. I think these positive police interactions with foreigners are scripted because the Pakistani government sees all these foreign RUclipsrs recording in Pakistan and they try to act positive and forthcoming as much as they can to lure more tourists to Pakistan. It’s all about the image they know what they are doing.
When the police tells you that you need a private security guard buddy I guess it ain't too safe you don't want to tell other people it is safe and put their life in danger
Actually security personnels here are very senstive about the security of foreigners. They want to protect you because sometimes they have intelligence reports and they dont want to freak you out by telling you that "some bad guys are keeping an eye on you" they want to make sure that no one can harm you. Dont mind it bro. They are just doing their duty.
But why should he be at risk at all? Just for walking the street or buying food? If foreigners were treated like that in the west it would be on the news and everyone screaming about racism. As a foreigner, assuming you know what is “safe” and what is not is a serious miscalculation. Please be safe, do not assume you know more about a community than a local. Wanting to roam free is understandable, I would hate to see you get hurt or worse.
I don't know, sometimes the best lesson is a hard lesson, like those girls who went to a remote mountainous area in Morocco thinking it was safe, only to get beheaded by religious extremists. Unfortunately, it's a sad end for them, but many people learned a lesson from those tragic killings. As someone who grew up in East Africa, sometimes I just say let the foreigners learn the hard way, especially when they doubt your advice, as if they're more knowledgeable than you.

Even mentions that you need a security guard before identifying themselves. I'm surprised he even entered the vehicle, the officer making him go on a tour before he takes him to his destination, he never asked for a tour and doesn't know the man driving - it's an F grade for the officer. @Witty Witty I guess you are from Pakistan - need police all the time to follow you around. FYI - the job of a good policing is to go after the criminals, however if there are massive number of criminals and less number of good guys, then the police will try to protect those few good guys by following them around. Sounds like an off-duty police officer saw you and was concerned for your safety. Nice to see people in this country (at least where you were located) actually care about the safety of foreigners.
But why didn’t he take him directly to his hotel like Karl asked him to do. If I was in his car against my will going in the opposite direction of my hotel I would have been convinced that I was getting kidnapped
well, any flap, especially an attacked foreign visitor, presumably makes the local police look bad, their area unsafe, etc. seems to me they were just worried about their job performance and couldnt care less what he's there to do. rushed him to finish eating before he's even had a bite, when he emphatically stressed to them he did not desire any security. probably his whole trip was just hanging around this place and that, this is a major upset... it is them valuing their own job performance over someone else's freedom, even over their own area's tourism value, as this kind of thing obviously is unwelcomed and can ruin a trip

Its common in Pakistan Karl. My wife is a Chinese and she used to have Police security going whereever she went no matter what. But on the other side if any crime was to happen to a foriegner in France or Spain or any touristy country, no body would care. Tourist women get kidnapped and sold as sex slaves in certain parts of Europe and South America. But if something was to happen to any foriegner in Pakistan, the whole world loses its Goddamned mind. Seasoned criminals come off as very sweet too. I wouldn't trust anybody claiming to be "security" in a country like Pakistan. Tourists are an easy target there and as an American the terrorists will have a field day with me.

Karl. I understand you trust the city. I'm sure most of the locals are flattered to receive such trust from tourists. But it seems like Pakistani police and authorities is taking extra measures to ensure guests have a good time and to promote tourism. There are bad people in every country and city. Police best interest to look after you. You represent 99% to 100% tourists in the area. Anything bad happens to you is super bad tourism for them. Either bad experience or whatever extreme mugged and killed on the streets. I don't think the government wants to stomach either outcome. Imagine the news gets out. A peaceful tourist went about his day to get to know the city. Gets mugged and stabbed. Returns flight to his family in a casket. But it was cool to see the mutual respect from Karl and police to Karl.
They identified themselves, the police was polite, professional, stated their purpose (to provide you with security), offered to buy you food (because you are a guest), gave you a trip around town, drove you back to the hotel and said nice things about you. So if I'm police in America, see a black guy sitting down eating in an affluent, prominently white neighbourhood, walk up to him, sit opposite and ask him what he's doing. Then request nicely that he come in a car with me and when he declines I say "sometimes you have to listen to others" before driving him away, makes me polite?

This is the real deal. 😁More than the safety of the tourist the policeman is concerned about the drama, hassle and tension that will follow his job if something happens to a tourist. Imagine Karl Rock's video all over CNN if terrorists get to him
I mean, it's clear that they were looking out for you and I apologize if this sounds too harsh, but speaking a bit of Urdu doesn't make you any less foreign to that area. The agent who approached you clearly had some specific information that you did not, and the area is not as safe for foreigners at that time of night as you might have thought it to be. I think you've lived in Delhi long enough to know that parts of Delhi aren't safe to walk around after 11pm, especially for foreigners and women. The agent called the local station and clearly instructed them to make sure you got to your hotel safely, so it's quite possible that you were being followed by people who didn't have the best intentions towards you. That is why the police officer literally gave you a ride in his official vehicle to your hotel.
I would LOVE to have security with me :) I'm American and am sure 99 percent of the time I'd be safe. But what about the other 1 percent? to be frank, a Pakistani in a very rural southern town just walking around in America when everyone else is white...you might be viewed with suspicion...it's not right but it's the way humans are sometimes. I don't know how much help you'd get from the cops there though!
It's the ride around town I found most scary. Our taxi driver in Bulgaria took us to the airport via a remote, run down industrial area. Then a short taxi ride back to our hotel in Moscow went miles out of the way. Both cases ended well, but at the time we thought we were in serious trouble. When our taxi was stopped in Karachi the police demanded our passports. We were there for the cricket and said they were in the hotel. They let us go. The taxi driver said we were very lucky we weren't arrested. Be careful out there.

As an American, I lived in Lahore for two years in the early 90s, as a young boy. During Desert Storm, foreigner relations were at an all time low. Lots of bomb threats. As a Pakistani living in Australia, trust me mate, police here are much much better than back home. Karl got one of the good one, which is rare but we do have them there. Off all the encounters I had with the police here, they've been really respectful and only seen troubling them if there's a sign of malice. @@sidneysaad1 I don’t think it’s because he got one of the “good ones”. I don't know, sometimes the best lesson is a hard lesson, like those girls who went to a remote mountainous area in Morocco thinking it was safe, only to get beheaded by religious extremists. That policeman seemed very nice, better than many police here in Mexico. In fact, if it was me, I would have been honored to have a police escort. I have, on occasions, had to contract a security escort to go into certain areas that I wanted to go to. The fact he wasn't charging you is really cool.
That's the point, people in the west don't like the police as they think that police will bring them trouble. But here in Pakistan If police is offering you escort, it is actually considered a good gesture as they are providing you with 'Protocol' or treating you as a VIP. Which in anyway is not a bad thing, it is considered cool if you have that escort. So there is no reason to be frustrated.
@@adeel3797 It's cool the first time as a story to tell, but many of us want an unfiltered travel experience where it is just us and the locals. We know that traveling in a place without many foreigners is risky, and we accept that risk. The police and locals knows things about the area that foreigners don't. Maybe Gangs or kidnappers oprate there? The Way he politely said "You should listen to others somtimes" confirmed it.
Karl. I'm someone that's grown up in the West but I was born in Bangladesh. This might seem intrusive and scary but generally the cops want to keep foreigners safe. This man did you a favour. He was looking out for you. His idea of giving you a drive was his way to go to an extra length to be hospitable. What he didn't understand is that someone from the west values their freedom over being looked after. I would've been irritated as well if this dude was harassing me even though he was coming from a good place. It's a hard thing to adjust to. But sometimes these small towns harbour dangerous criminals. That's why he laughed at your naivety. Still, I understand where you are coming from. The title in the video is misleading. He didn't bust you. He was trying to be a gentleman but someone from there will never understand why you wanted to be left alone. The privilege we often take for granted in the west for security is not evident in a rural town in the sub continent.
There’s parts in America in the west where you cannot walk alone at night either. Probably even more dangerous
I agree that this is the case but also surprised that Karl divulged personal information such as where he was staying or that he was planning to walk alone to a stranger who hadn't shown any identification at those points. Thankfully he was like you said, a real police officer looking out for him but that could have been just enough information for Karl to be in trouble later that evening if things were more sinister. Scary interaction with good intentions it seems.
@@MountReal786 That's true. Good and bad places everywhere but still why bring America into the question? We have to accept reality .. and that yes the police officer was protecting him because in these rural towns anything can happen.

@@official.rajarshidutta well no one blamed raw, but as the blame game goes on both sides so it might be who know, but one thing for sure is that if any such incident happens, indian people and media makes sure to milk it properly against pak, sorry to say but that's the truth, you guys have even politicised the game of cricket
Karl your videos are simply awesome! Namaste from USA
good on the security guard for recognizing he seemed like a stranger. he probably knew something you didnt, and knew that a police escort was the only way for you to trust an escort
The Police officer was really kind and truely cared for you..Kudos to the officer!
I disagree, imagine that happening in a western country - even though protecting, it would be are you a racist?!!?!
Aint we supposed to be one?
@@RDFContent yeh but it's not a western country. The rules are different. There's nothing wrong with security. I'm sure it's annoying but some inconvenience for safety is a trade off we'd all make.

As someone who lives in El Salvador; someone was about to harm you or you were about to get robbed. Even though must be difficult to trust in people, sometimes you must go on and take a risk, it can save your life. Also the officer was so nice and polite.
El Salvadore is a great country, much safer than it used to be

Yup. It was genuine concern. Yeah sure as a tourist you want freedom to do what you want, but there are some bad people out there that wouldn't think twice to do you harm. Inconvenience for sure, but for the best for both parties. Especially for places like smaller villages off the main tourist attractions.
If I ever get picked up by cartel Jalisco Nueva GeneracXIIIcion, first thing I'll do is give them information on where thier enemies live. I walk alone after 11PM.
Currently planning a trip. I’ve ran into this “protectiveness” of tourists in other countries in the region. It’s a little frustrating (I also travel solo), but one missing tourist effects their economy. They have a respect for guests thats awkward for westerners.
Karl, I think you were definitely in danger and they were genuinely worried for you.
One time a gringo came to live next to my house he use to live the village once a week so when he left me and my friends we burned his motorcycle and house 🏠 I was 12 years old .we Mexicans and 🇺🇸ans we hate te each other

he seemed really nosey seemed like he wanted him out
If I had to guess I would have said that they mistake him for fckn pewds cause damn they look alike
Hi karl, you speak urdu so well. ❤️. I am from Pakistan. In the smaller cities there might be some security problems so that is why the hotels are instructed to send a security guard with any foreigner who is leaving the hotel for a walk. It is for the well being of the foreigner. It is only for the security of the guest so that he doesnt face any unwanted situation or trouble. The hotel guys were bound to provide you the security during your walk but perhaps you denied them or probably they made a mistake. The Police guy did a wonderful job. Sometimes even if a Pakistan national visits some other city, he may face a scam, fraud or theft and you are still a foreigner. Salutes to the Police guy who fulfilled his duty in a best manner. Whether you understand or not, there was something unpleasant which the security guys had smelled and wanted to keep you safe from it. . I am amazed how professional that Police guy was. ❤️❤️❤️lots of Love for that Police officer.
I agree with you. Sometimes you are tagged as a tourist alone, easy pray. Nobody seems bad but they give informations about you to bad guys to prepare troubles. Perhaps an agent ear something in preparation and call for security guard. I'm really impressed by the attention. Public servants doing a good job. 👍🏼 Enjoy and take care.
Wow, your country really turned out great when you need to send security along with tourists. Guess which country I will never visit in my life.
@@justincase9471 Sir. The area which he is visiting is a remote area and not a big city. These are thr precautionary measures for the safety of foreign tourists against any possible scam. Most areas of Pakistan are considered safest for tourists. I dont need to guess whether or not you want to visit whichever country but Pakistan has got some most beautiful sceneries and most welcoming people.
Thanks for clearing that up abnusah i was having cynical thoughts about the cop , and had my doubts that he actually was a cop
@@Secularworld60 The security departments of Pakistan are committed for the security and safety of the public and specially towards the safety of tourists from other nations.
Probably just concerned for your safety. I was with a navy guy once in a city in West Virginia, in a bar one night, in walking distance to the hotel, and we were getting pretty hammered, and he said we better go back to the hotel at 11pm. We walked through a local park with a lot of hangouts and he picked up the pace. He had some idea of what can occur around there at night. I went with him because it's not my city, doesn't function the same, more drug use, and people could be packing guns etc.
As a person who has lived here (hometown) and worked there all my life, the Poilce Officer was rightfully there to protect you. Nankana Sahib though filled with beautiful places to visit and many things to offer to the Tourists, is also not far from crime. The town itself is very small and though safe during the day, surrounding villages can harbour some bad people out at night time.
Hope you enjoy your stay there and stay out of trouble.
Stay Safe
Being western I’m oblivious to the area. Was the concern for safety for overall criminals or like an organization in the area? I understand being foreign would be a case for concern, just wondering what specifically? Also great job to that officer!
@@SinkingShips1998I think it was just an overall unsafe place to be walking alone at night. We have the same in New Orleans. Here, you're never very far from a bad neighborhood. Plus filming with the camera makes one look like like a tourist. I love the videos, but I think the local police know their area and were looking out for him. Props to them.
