5:08 “You got to learn to say NO!” - The best advice! I used to be very soft-hearted and people were taking advantage of me because of that including the so called “friends” back then. It took years for me to learn to say no. If someone is around you because of benefits only, you’ll realize the truth the first time you say no.
People may tell you you're mean or cold hearted because you know how to assert yourself and say no, but it's not true. Either they want something from you or can't do it themselves. Setting boundaries and sticking to them protects your peace, and it's an important life skill to have.
Also, leave it at a "no". Just a simple, hard "no" that nobody can argue with. I used to be the type that fumbles for excuses. "I got no cash on me" - "Well that's okay, there's an ATM right over there and you can also sign here to sign up for blablabla". Whatever you use for an excuse, they'll be prepared for it or at the very least, you just gave them another chance to prolong the conversation, and that can only ever benefit the scammer. A "no" without explanation (even when they press you for one) is impossible to argue with. You don't owe them anything. In fact, enjoy seeing them angry. They tried to exploit you. Want to do good for strangers? Ruin a scammer's day today.
Moral of the story : While in India you should never ever think about helping someone who is asking u money. If they follow you, turn back, roll your eyes and shout "Told you nooohhh" and they will vanish.

I fell for the hotel tariff scam while working in Bengaluru. A man came up to me with a story of having to be in the City but he cannot afford the hotel bill (if I recall). I paid something, but less than he wanted. A month later (when I was more of a veteran to life in India), the same guy came to me with the same exact story when I was downtown around MG and Brigade. I lost it on him, and made a scene, as I was frustrated and to let others around know not to fall for the scam.
something similar happened to me there lo l but the guy came 2 hours later back to me and repeated the story i was like "wtf u told me that shit 2 hours ago " then he walked off when he remembered .

The begging and harassment never stops.
I'm from India and i applaud you for bringing this to light and educating foreigners on these types of scams. I myself have been scammed plenty of times and it makes it harder to identify between genuine cases and fake ones. My advice is to Just don't trust those people and ignore them they will leave you alone.
Not just for foreigners visiting India, this is so helpful for locals as well. The first scam shown in the video, the exact same thing happened to me a month ago. Wish Karl had uploaded this video a month ago 😢
If I say a number which they are expecting, they show you that they have correctly predicted the number as they wrote it on the paper. They might ask you one more question, like, name a milk giving animal or a garden flower. This is a simple psychological trick where most people, Indian at least, will choose cow or rose for those questions. Then they show you that they predicted correctly, and on that paper itself, will be an amount written. Like 1100 or 3100 and they will ask you to pay them that much amount. If you give an answer which is different from what they've written, they will just shamelessly ask you to guess again and again and again 😂
i can't believe my eyes to see hindus disguising in sikh turbans and wearing articles of faith while scamming people 😭😭 , hopefully an action against it
My father was telling me a story that happened to him about 20yrs ago. He was crossing back over the Tijuana, Mexico border into the states and there was this man there begging for money, doing the same thing these people in ur video r doing. Well after this man followed him and wouldn't leave him alone, my dad got pissed and very forcefully told the man to go get a freaking job and to stop harassing him. Well the man replied with 'this IS my job'.

I went to Nepal last month and I can say that it's the same case here, lots of beggars and even in busy traffic you can see children roaming around people's cars and begging for money and they keep on persisting. I was visiting a temple and I was surprised to see a bunch of beggars there too, no parents or anything, most of them were just children or literal babies yet they go around begging people walking by for money, they'll even go as far as to follow you for ages until they get something.
As a Nepali, I can confirm this. I went back to Nepal with my parents for a holiday (I live in England) and as soon as they heard my British accent, they kept on asking me for money lol, my parents had to basically chase them away, even had a kid follow my dad till he gave a small amount just to make him go away
@goaway4240 yeah I understand that, I'm also from england and when I went there I tried to speak very little english (except from close family) to try and 'fit in' but even with doing that we still got a lot of beggars, it might've been my complexion since I'm a tad bit lighter so they must've assumed I was a foreigner or something. The beggars we encountered at the temple kept following us and my uncle started saying stuff like "oh come live with us" etc and they probably got weirded out and left
Being an Indian I feel shameful by these types of acts, even I have experienced many things life thus, they even start cursing. These things should stop immediately.

It's so hard and annoying that all sorts of scams from top to bottom are from India and As an Indian, we are ashamed of such incidents... Thank you Karl for the awareness..ay God bless you.
What sucks is that as Karl had mentioned once before in the past in another video, if they get aggressive with the touching in order to make you feel uncomfortable enough to entice you to give them money, if you decided to punch them or even just push them off, they’ll scam you by acting like a victim and pretending that they were being beaten up by a foreigner.
The sad thing is there ARE genuine beggars in India, but they are often bullied around by the local gangs to give up some of their money as a "permit" for begging on their turf
I also faced one kind of such scam in New Delhi. One lady was trying to pin a small Indian flag on my shirt and I immediately refused and took out that. It was the Independence day. New Delhi is full of scammers. I have visited New Delhi 7 times and every time I didn't feel safe there. Being an Indian I feel unsafe there, then forget about the foreigners.
NO WAY!!! The lady in white, 8:14 School Donation. She approached me in 2007 when I was at the India Gate. I've got footage of her, I made her dance for the donation. Can't believe she's still there. My mind is literally blown! Let me know if you want me to send you the clip.

Hey Karl, I am a Fiji Indian living in NZ for 20 years. Some of the scams you are highlighting here are now starting to be reported in NZ now. Because I look Indian, I have been approached for money especially at Indian shops and Temple. Saying "no" is easier said than done. As a woman we fear saying no because of physical and social repercussions. I love to travel and right now I'm in Northern Europe, and while there may not be many beggars here, there are men who stop you just to talk to you / waste your time. In life there are people who can take more than money from you when they see you're a foreigner. So ladies (and gentlemen) if a stranger stops you anywhere, even if it's just to flirt, say no thank you (unless you're also interested) but don't carry on conversations with emotional vampires who are bored, want attention, or feel lonely. It's not youre job to entertain strangers especially when your in a foreign country and have plans and just want to relax.
My basic rule whenever I visit india is to just keep my head down and not interact with strangers. Best way. Don’t engage with beggars or people claiming to be beggars. Even real beggars can sometimes be ungrateful for how much you give them.
Thank you so much for your clip. I never had the smallest interest to fly to India for holidays I have read many books about those scams. Well done👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I once had a kid hugging around me asking for money. I just told him to move away and refused initially. But he kept on hugging around my legs in tears, I was about to give in. That's when my father shouted at him and chased him away. After few mins, i could see him doing the same thing to the next person. They really make us uncomfortable and guilt trip. Thanks Karl on your message of saying NO firmly and standing by it
Yeah but other countries don't do this to the degree we know it's going on. This seems to be group think. It's part of their culture. Really abnormal society.

Karl, I visited Varanasi last Saturday. I saw the scamsters still there scamming people at the Ghats by applying Tilaks, etc. I cunningly ditched those scams, but helped a small 2-3 year old girl selling pens, by buying the pens from her. I was remembering you at that time. 🙂
Most probably they are not Sikh and just perpetrating these scams under the guise of the Turban because foreigners tend to think these people are genuine.
I think saying No is allot harder for people especially myself who wanna help but ended up get you at the end. But thankfully over time saying No to people really does work and by the end of the day you feel better especially the next day. It’s okay to really say no when you feel uncomfortable.
Well then ur actually missing out on a lot of fun. Scammers are everywhere, u just gotta be careful. Unfortunately the scams in india are covered more frequently than scams elsewhere. Anyways who am I to convince you 🤷🏽
It brought it all back to me. I went to India regularly throughout the 90s and early 2000s, 16 times in all. India hardens you like nothing else, you end up being so defensive that you dismiss people with the flick of your wrist. You can't afford to show compassion, it backfires so often. It's sensory and emotional rollercoaster. Strangely addictive, I looked forward to going back every year and couldn't wait to leave when I got there. India brings out the worst of you and like many others who go to India to find themselves, I found myself too, I found out I'm an asshole.
Wow! I am planning my trip to India to ground myself and I am terrified of what I will find out about myself 😂 I am travelling with my Indian friend who is local so I hope i will be little protected but still i am a bit worried how i will handle all these scammers and beggars...am very altruistic and bounderless so I guess this trip will be the best school for learning to say NO and stick with it 🤷♀️ hopefully 😅

A little late in seeing this, but glad to see someone's exposing this kind of behavior. Similar behavior can be found in the Philippines. Though I ended up laughing when I saw that sheet of paper for the Ranipur Calamity Scam, 300 rupees translates to about 200 pesos. We actually had someone going around here in the Philippines demanding for donations for a cause, several versions of it. 1. Bringing an "OFFICIAL" command from the Local Government Unit (City Mayor's Office) ordering all business establishments to give to their cause, minimum of 5,000 pesos or more. 2. Bringing an "OFFICIAL" signed letter from various organizations / political leaders in support of their basketball league and applying pressure on others to donate to their funds. There's several versions of those types of scams here, but worst still is that some of them are allegedly run by people in the government.
The arm or leg grabbing was tough, especially when it was children but you could tell there was a ring leader in the corner that they were taking all money to.
Hi Karl, I have a question: would people in india also try to scam me if I am an NRI, but not really fluent in hindi. I never been to india and i also have a strong german accent when speaking english aswell a hindi unfortunately Thx

In any large city in India, there are various types of scams running. In Bengaluru, for example, people from north India are running several sympathy scams on localities. Let's say you're walking down the street in some affluent neighborhood, a family - a husband, a wife plus at least 3 to 4 kids, will approach you with a pickup line - "hindi maaloom (can you speak Hindi?)", and tell you a sob story of how they lost everything on a train while they were traveling somewhere (they typically use some religious destination), and ask you for "help" to get back to their hometown in north. I fell for it for the first time many years ago, and I saw the exact same family years later in a different neighborhood running the exact same scam.
I ran into the same scam in the same place last month in Connaught Place. Two different guys approached my to say that "I'm a very special young man". Thank goodness I had watched all your videos, Karl! Best regards from Brazil Jai Hind!
Even indians get scammed Karl, it's terrible. I come from a small town where we don't have such BS but in delhi these are everywhere, you tend to treat everyone with respect but they just don't leave you until you are harsh or tell them to go away. I feel bad but at the same time pity for these guys who resort to these cheap tricks instead of honest hard work.

Why are all these western people desperate to holiday in a country where everybody is on the make and on the take. If they want a holiday in asia go to China, it is fabulously stunning, no crime and no one harrassing tourists, then there is Singapore, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, bali etc.
Not all people in any country are totally honest in all their dealings with foreigners ,Many are kind and welcoming to their country because they know that tourism and a good vibe that tourists have and experience in the countries they go to is important for their future well being ,The ones that don’t care should realise that it brings a bad rap to everyone else that lives there.Don’t judge all by the actions of a few and embrace the culture and beauty of the country and the people that you visit and not on the negative but on the positives of your experiences ,

These scams are very common in Delhi, I lived in Delhi for a good numbers of years and I have seen so many of these scammers, first time I met them I thought it was genuine but turned out it was scam. Karl I am sure your boldness of exposing these scams are saving lot of tourists. Keep up the good work.
Delhi sounds delicious. I'm craving some bread.
Yeah, it sucks because most people do want to help genuine people. But these people just destroy that trust.
If anyone approaches you for anything in India it's a scam. No exceptions. It's harsh but don't acknowledge their presence and they will go away.
I found him near Majestic Bus station few months back I think. The story was more or less the same.
Never beat him up?
something similar happened to me there lo l but the guy came 2 hours later back to me and repeated the story i was like "wtf u told me that shit 2 hours ago " then he walked off when he remembered .

Not just for foreigners visiting India, this is so helpful for locals as well. The first scam shown in the video, the exact same thing happened to me a month ago. Wish Karl had uploaded this video a month ago 😢
What happens if you say a number?
If I say a number which they are expecting, they show you that they have correctly predicted the number as they wrote it on the paper. They might ask you one more question, like, name a milk giving animal or a garden flower. This is a simple psychological trick where most people, Indian at least, will choose cow or rose for those questions. Then they show you that they predicted correctly, and on that paper itself, will be an amount written. Like 1100 or 3100 and they will ask you to pay them that much amount.
If you give an answer which is different from what they've written, they will just shamelessly ask you to guess again and again and again 😂
Yes, even locals, but rich looking locals.

I fell victim to this recently in Chennai. Unfortunate but it is a learning experience

Mr. Karl I really love it your video. You are the best.
