The Biggest Tourist Scam in Nepal (and How to Avoid It!)

  • You'll be approached by friendly locals all day long in Nepal, but usually, they're just rip-off salesmen in disguise. I'll show you exactly how to identify them and how you can avoid them when you're in Nepal.
One of the most common approaches is a stranger offering to take you to "their" art school in Nepal, do not go! This is the art school scam, and it's just a sales trick to get you into a store so they can overcharge you for low-quality student-level Thangka paintings. I shopped around and found the same products for more than 50% less in the tourist area of Thamel in Kathmandu.
The most important thing to learn before travelling to Nepal or India is to learn to say "No." And not be afraid to walk away even when these salesmen put pressure on you to buy. Just say "No" and walk away.
Travel safely and enjoy Nepal! I recommend doing trekking there. Even if you're not a trekker, you could start with the beginner-level 3-5 day Mardi Himal trek.

saying you are a student when you are clearly not is NOT a sales technique, it is a lie. If you have to lie to sell items, you are in the wrong business. I am against people coming to my country, USA, and getting scammed. I would rather you know what the scams are so you dont leave with a bad thought in your head about our country. Showing these scams, shows the bad of certain people, not the bad of a whole country.

When I visited Nepal a couple years ago I had a great experience. The biggest red flags I saw is everyone is a “licensed tourist guide”. I did meet a local in Bhaktapur who cooked dinner for my friends and I. He ended up being our guide for our trek to Nagarkot then Chitwan. He was an honest man supporting his family and very negotiable with his rate.
My worse experience was at Pashupatinath when I was being bothered so much by a “guide”. I can tell even the locals were annoyed by him

I'd say it's a scam. They misrepresent the art by pretending it's more laborious to produce than it really is and that it's more valuable than it is. Some of those things are little more than prints that may have been produced by the hundreds by a machine in China. They have a few people making actual pieces of art so it feels legitimate.

I was constantly targeted for a similar "painting school" tourist hustle in Cusco, Peru. One man in particular accosted me as I sat in a quiet square enjoying the day, shoved his "portfolio" in my face and insisted I look at all his work and support his family etc.
The paintings were all clearly mass produced and churned out, and definitely not by him because the styles were all over the place.
I lost track of how many times I said no, no thank you, not interested, but the whole point of tourist hustling is to apply high and constant pressure and guilt and harassment.
It's 🙄 to see so many people in the comments defending this behaviour, no matter where it happens in the world.

    - Same work in found somewhere else for half the price.
    - Karl wasn't looking down at the "Student level painting" but more focusing on the price range (Double price for less quality work).
It's just that this situation is pretty different from the regular content of what we see. Hard to see scam related to Art.
However, I wouldn't personality have sympathy for the guys charging double because they are not harming Karl, they're harming the real artists working hard to sell their work for an honest price. So don't be mad at Karl for pointing out the obvious!

The main issue why it is called a scam is simply because they are lying about literally everything. They are putting on a whole show and it 's all a scam. These are not their own authentic paintings. They steal these paintings from real artists, and then just color them. These are not their own paintings, these are copies. That is why they are worthless. So not only do they steal the work from the artists who made them, they also sell these worthless copies for much more then they are worth. This is terrible for the artist industry. It is stealing from the people who actually have the talent to make a painting like this.

Honestly loved some of the student paintings more than the master paintings in my school when I was trying to be a good artist. I failed badly at continuing my art path. But art is subjective. Some pieces spoke to me that Artificial bots did and I still have them saved in my phone because I love them. If you love an art piece and it makes you cry, then it’s worth it. But don’t ever buy from someone pressuring you and pestering to purchase their art. I hate that about sellers and it makes me leave the premise

Honestly as someone who has travelled SE Asia, I was interested in Nepal, seeing these comments makes me rethink that.
If your mentality in Nepal (as shown in the comments) is that overcharging tourists and guilting them into buying in the fist shop you take them to 'isn't a scam' and 'is friendly and normal' then I really have no interest in visiting.
Why would I want to travel there and spend my hard earned money, only to be charged more than 2x the cost and half the quality of something I can buy down the road? Why would I want to travel somewhere where the locals think this is OK?
I could travel to plenty of other places who will value the money I earn as much as I do and won't rip me off.
    Good video, bad comments.
Edit: Had something similar happen in Cambodia, once I left, I realised that I actually would have purchased more, but I just couldn't trust that I wasn't being overcharged. This kind of attitude is stupid and everyone loses out. If you sell high quality at decent prices, people want to buy more. If they walk down the road only to realise they could have paid less for better, they feel cheated and will spend less money everywhere to avoid that feeling.

Love your video, Karl, because I do so much art buying when I travel. Your experience in Nepal is interesting---I've never had some guy approach me in the street to buy art from "an art school." However, your advice is fair warning: do NOT respond to folks who approach you on the street for business :). To add to previous comments, if you land in a country and are gone in a few days, it's really hard to find a high quality artist who is not using an expensive gallery, and will offer a great price to you. It really does take time. I was in Puerto Vallarta recently, asked around for a particular type of beaded art by the Huichol tribe, and went to an open-air market. I walked around for hours, found a family-run shop that was loaded with nice pieces, and bargained for several pieces at great prices. HOWEVER, later that day, I went into an actual art gallery, and the owner had beautiful pieces (better than the other shop) and was willing to give me unreal prices for the better pieces. It was too late---I had already had a representative piece of the Huichol tribe and could not buy another one. So, again, as a tourist with limited time you will make mistakes, but honestly, as long as you are getting something original that looks beautiful (not an out and out scam) you'll be ok.

Although unethical, it's not hard to understand why they do it. They lie to you because they believe that most buyers prefer to get to know and understand the artist this way. It also gives the paintings provenance and a better story for you to bring home...until you speak with someone "in the know".
It's a crappy thing to be tricked, especially when you find out 2 years later while showing it off to some out of town guests that are over for dinner.
The good thing is that there's a lot of remote places in Nepal and Tibet where traditions are out of reach of the progressive people that believe we should all think the same. I think the reason the students are selling at a higher price is because well.. they are student level trying to make a buck, at Master level, the people can afford to sell their art work at a cheaper rate because they sell more and do better and have mastered their craft, and with so much art competition in Nepal towards tourists, it must be so hard for art students at beginner level to make any money! so I dont think this is a scam its more a selling technique and doing a "hard sell" is their way of gaining more sales and more knowing within their community.

It’s a scam in charging too much and pretending the quality of the painting is higher than it is. If you’re an artist you know the difference in quality of paper, paints and if it’s a reproduction or not.
We had same experience and they try to scam you saying it’s master paintings. They are not and they are using cheap products which makes a difference. They claim the paints also have real gold in it or are using gold foil - they are using fake.
If you like the picture fine - but you are paying top dollar for a mass reproduction

They set their price high so even if we negotiate they will earn good profit. And thats not just tourist scam that happens to us locals too. This is life. Big brands have been scamming us our whole life but we dont seem to have a problem. Example: Apple. Highly overpriced yet no one complains. It's the school that's encouraging this and unfortunately, they're devaluing the art by doing so. By pumping out more volume to finance everything the market gets flooded and the value drops. So does appreciation and the reputation of the art itself. Everybody profits for a while until things progress.

Mr Karl thank you for the video. Firstly I would like to correct your click bait disclaimer as selling technique more than scam. Although Nepal is a third world country and trying to introduce you to their native products, they have never been rude to you. My suggestion would be just say you are not interested, no need to waste your and their time going to their shop. (Your video shows you were more interested and gathering information from all possible stores and bargaining. P.S you are the one who is scamming)
Additionally, please do not speak Hindi and compare with India. With due respect we are different nations, India and Nepal has a beautiful relationship being neighbouring nation but their are many contrast as Australia and Newzealand.

Being an Expat Nepalese the price of paintings were fair. It is very time consuming work and we understand the price, not a scam at all. Nepalese people will happily fork out for such paintings. Thangka painters are highly respected and their paintings are highly valued by locals. It is quite disrespectful for a foreigner who knows nothing about local culture calling it a scam. I don’t know what does he expect $5 for 1000 hrs of labour? They often have elaborate compositions including many small figures depicting lifetime of Buddha/ dieties etc. He just does not get it! It is not easy to give the price to the art piece. However, when come to the price, I give credit to how much time they spent, the quality of the painting and how much it impact to your mind and soul. It may cost you 100 US$ but imagine how many days they make it and will you do that with that amount...well if you have the talent.

BUT BUT BUT what do you do? ' hmm let's make expose videos on Nepal and show how scammy this place is'' . See the problem here is, you can atleast show some courtesy or gratitude by showcasing some good place like maybe Harald bald does and promote this welcoming place along with your scam videos in a balanced way. Not that you don't show good stuff, but showing only bad stuffs will surely undermine all the good stuff Nepal has. Being a famous RUclipsr we can expect better from you.
