Prashanth Kamath Depends on what the second price is. They do it in China, the motorcycle taxi guys usually charge about the same as a regular didi/Uber, and private drivers charge 2/3 more for foreigners. Honestly, it just seems like the norm in just about every country I've been to. There's always a foreign mark up and, tbh, fair enough. It's just part of traveling. As long as the markup isnt insane, it alright with me 🤷♂️
when news came out of a similar scam going on in Greece in the mid-90s, it made the front page news. The scam was happening in a number of restaurants, with waiters placing an 'X' on the order form from a tourist, X standing for 'xeno' meaning foreigner. This would result in a higher price being charged. It was considered illegal and quite scandalous that tourists would be ripped off when tourism is their biggest industry. They stamped it out straight away.
Why are they charging more ? Because they CAN and SHOULD. These people make a way below minimum wage (vs 1st world Nations). The products and services they sell are dramatically cheaper than what "we" are used to paying in our home countries, even at inflated prices. Paying them more will mostly hurt locals by encouraging vendors chase tourists instead of serving everyone and raising prices for everyone, including locals.
When we were in India they where asking about 5000 rupees (~70 USD) for such an box. I was surprised that they only tried to overcharge you about 30-50%.
Karl : why do you charge more money from foreigners..... Auto drivers : Because, you guys charge everything to leave our country..... So, you have to pay it back😂😂😂
In India we do not have tip culture, so charging a bit higher price to the people who can very well afford it, is fine and that is also practiced in the US-the western countries by not having MRP system
@@sooramk9569 In Malayalam "peeranki" is cannon. Meanwhile "paranki" is foreigner/Portuguese. I didn't realize that the two words were connected. Interesting. Firangi comes from the word Franc (French/Frankish), which was then used for all Europeans by the Persians.
They do the same thing in Thailand. Some places are free for locals to visit but foreigners have to pay. Taxi drivers are required by law to use a meter but sometimes if they see you’re a foreigner they will try to haggle with you over the fare starting at a price that’s 4 times higher than it should be.
This dude upset that he's being charged £1 for a taxi ride instead of 50p. The hustle is real. *Price discrimination* is a real system that works. People see the word discrimination and think it's bad, but it also refers to elderly people getting cheaper prices, students getting student discounts, the fact things are cheaper if you buy in bulk, AND that certain things are cheaper for locals than tourists who have invested in travelling to the location. Students get cheaper prices because they have less money. Perfect sales would be that the price is different for every single person, being the maximum that each person would be happy/willing to pay. I know we still feel "unfair" that this is not the same price as a local would get. But since locals are considerably poorer than Westerners travelling to India for fun, they would not buy anything if they had to pay this much. Even my own city, Bath in England, we have a huge tourist destination called the Roman Baths. In very good condition from 2000 years ago. It's free for me because I live here. I can go as many times as I want since it's my city. It's about £20 for a tourist though. This is the same all over the planet. Locals will always do better and it works out for the best. It's just economics.
JamesTavRule, it’s called taxes. As a local, you’ve already paid your portion in taxes, which have been used to subsidize the Roman Baths. It’s logical and normal that tourist would pay more for the stuff that locals have already paid for in taxes.

Not only to foreigners they charged more but also to their own countrymen especially from northeast people of india like me...

True....

That's sad
The shope keepers increase the price if they know they weren't locals (even within the same state).

It boosts the meter to run faster so you end up paying around 30% more on the meter. These guys are always one up on the customer. Best to Uber or Ola. It's a little premium to pay but fairly cheap to get around.
You've gotta keep some of your Kiwi perspective thou brother.. i know i did when travelling India, 50 rupees is 1 Australian dollar, so i never really felt bad for payin' an extra 50c-dollar for somethings, especially when you can prob see they're going home to feed a family of 6 with it! Most foreigners dont realize India runs on bargaining, so you either play the game or just accept it.. that said speaking Hindi definitely helps thou.
Yup, I know what you're saying Bro. I live here, so for me this is a daily thing. For tourists it's just 2 weeks. This pricing also applies to Indians who are from different states, so it helps them remember to bargain too.
*He lives in India most of the time ... My state haryana is like a second home to him*
@chrismacsims It is outright immoral to charge a higher price.
Prashanth Kamath Depends on what the second price is. They do it in China, the motorcycle taxi guys usually charge about the same as a regular didi/Uber, and private drivers charge 2/3 more for foreigners. But they have to feed their families with that so I don’t mind. What I do mind is one private driver demanding three times the regular Uber/Didi rate and twice the metered street taxi rate for a ten minute trip.
Exactly my thinking. Giving them a hard time for 50c? First and last video from your channel. Interesting tho, can't knock the hustle lol
They say to you they charge 10-20 more, but in reality, 50 for a native vs 100 for a foreigner, is double.
Thank you for showing this.

Good job exposing those to other tourists
Hey Karl, This happens to Indians from south who visits northern cities too. The moment they realize we are from south(madrasas), they'll charge more. This is especially when you go shop in local market. But they're better off from corporates and banks who rip off so much money from middle class. We rather pay more to the people who are in need than the big rip offs.

Vendor : How many pieces?
Rock : Only one piece man, I only have one girlfriend. How many you have?
I bet you liked it when the seller said you are speaking pure Hindi Karl? 😀
Best compliment ever. She charmed me 😍
Why are they charging more ? Because they CAN and SHOULD. These people make a way below minimum wage (vs 1st world Nations). The products and services they sell are dramatically cheaper than what "we" are used to paying in our home countries, even at inflated prices. If you can afford to travel there as a tourist or even student or employee, you can afford to pay the inflated tourist prices.
Paying them more will mostly hurt locals by encouraging vendors chase tourists instead of serving everyone and raising prices for everyone, including locals.
You sound so cute when you talk in Hindi.
It’s not just foreigners, It happens with Indian tourists traveling to other parts of country too. E.g North Indian traveling to south and vice versa
The Indian rickshaw drivers were surprised when you started speaking Hindi
Your hindi is so cute. Even though it's cute, it's making them feel ashamed of what they are doing.

@@sooramk9569 In Malayalam "peeranki" is cannon. Meanwhile "paranki" is foreigner/Portuguese. I didn't realize that the two words were connected. Interesting.
Firangi comes from the word Franc (French/Frankish), which was then used for all Europeans by the Persians.
@@rexsceleratorum1632 the firangi reference actually is linked as canon or warfare used by English men
@@sooramk9569 In Kerala's case, paranki was never used for the British in my knowledge. The word was synonymous with the Portuguese.
Rates are not high for only tourist. They ask for high prices even from locals.
7:28...🤣😂😂 How many girlfriend that guy 1500..🤣🤣
"Some people say I'm Pewdiepie on crack" damn now I wonder how Karl feels after reading those comments so often.
