The WORST Tourist Trap in India

  • This restaurant and souvenir shop on India's famous Golden Triangle route is the worst tourist trap I've ever come across! The souvenirs are massively marked up, their cruddy restaurant charges 5-star prices, and they're busy breaking the law by rubbing out the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) on their snacks too.
This video will also help you learn the basic prices for souvenirs in India. Always buy them from a market rather than greedy stores like these. Even your hotel's souvenir store will be a better option.
Avoid Motel Gangaur (मोटल गणगौर) on NH11 Agra-Jaipur road at all costs!

The sad thing is I meet many other foreigners who have been on "tours of India" and are unimpressed by the food and have little to say other than "(X) was pretty" because they never went out into real india, but rather were just taken around in the tour group. It's very sad as they miss out on really everything India has to offer like that, sure the big boy castle in jaipur is neat, but there's great castles in Turkey, Switzerland, France, many places, but nowhere has as good of food, as rich of culture, and as friendly of people as India/Nepal/Lanka.

He is correct. Touring India 101: Avoid making purchases at on route motels where the bus stops; instead, utilize the restrooms and keep some snacks handy or look for some alternate hotel. Additionally, avoid shopping at stores recommended by tour guides. This rule goes even for Indians touring India.

This looks like the exact same place my driver brought me on my first trip to India a few years ago. It was on the drive from Jaipur to Agra. I refused to buy anything there and the driver was pissed off because he was due to get a free meal if I ate in the restaurant. There's a smaller room near the main restaurants where the drivers all eat for free, massive platefuls of food. I ended up just buying a lassi for 300 rupees.

I'm from kashmir and even we get treated the same as foreigners when we travel to different places in india.
Honestly Delhi and Rajasthan is a bit too much for us "foreigners" Lol (no hate to local people though)
Okay so I too went to a delhi shop and the shopkeeper, he thought of me as a foreigner and spoke to me in English.
I wanted to buy a skirt and he said to his partener in hindi that "bhav doguna karde konsa fark padhega" which means double the original price of the skirt doesn't matter to them.
I got SHOCKED 💀💀💀 For a sec I was like bro what???
but in the end of the bargaining I TOLD HIM BHAI SAB MEREKO URDU AATI HAI 💀💀
He laughed (I don't know what was funny tho)
But yes I didn't buy anything from that shop haha

It’s happened to me in India & Indonesia BUT the shock I caused when berating them in their dialect was priceless…. Thank you for pointing out the tourist traps. People want to have a good experience while enjoying the world and other cultures. Avarice is not exclusive to India. I cannot help, but see the way the corrupt store clerk talks down to his customers. He hypes up things that are inexpensive trinkets, tells you an unbelievably heavy price on it, and you see that his conscience had been seared a long time ago, does he even have a soul... On a bus trip to Grand Canyon, the bus driver took us to a small town in the middle of nowhere in which the items were all overpriced. On the plus side, the items were clearly marked, the shop clerk was not sizing you up like a vulture to see what she or he could get out of you. That does not negate that it was a tourist trap anyway. The Grand Canyon itself seemed to have reasonably price items in the shops, yet clearly they were making money in a more honest way.

I recently went to Agra for the first time and we were taken to a souvenir shop by our driver. We ended up buying a few things. While leaving, on the railway station, we thought about asking a store about the prices. Almost all the things we bought were for less than half the price we paid for them. Both the stores had "Government Shop" written there. It was saddening, but we bought quite a lot from the store at the railway station as we wanted to buy more but didn't want to spend so much at the fist store.

Update: I went to visit my parents in New Zealand, and I found one of those MAGNETIC chess boards in his room! Dad bought one sometime later on the trip 😂 He got it for ₹250 at the local market luckily 👍
Basically, where the bus stops, you use the toilet, then go to the small shop next-door or across the road 🙏
Dosto, all of these souvenirs are mass-produced. Don't think they're rare, they're sold everywhere in Rajasthan. If you want better prices, wait till you get to Jaipur and shop at the many vendors near Hawa Mahal. Your hotel souvenir store will probably have fairer prices and more reliable quality products than Motel Gangaur too. Fake marble is a big issue, usually, it's alabaster which is more chalk-like. Always bargain, but realise you won't get the local rate and will always pay 10-20% over it. Always check your bill at restaurants because some bad ones add on additional items. This video was filmed just before Lockdown.

In India it is Illegal to sell goods over MRP[Maximum Retail Price] This is generally printed on the backside of the wrapper... So always check MRP before buying products.. Only valid for packed items.. But for handicrafts just as Karl said bargain hard... I hope it helped a bit.

    • @SuikoFreakZ
      @SuikoFreakZ 23 дня назад

In India, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has issued guidelines that state that hotels and restaurants cannot charge more than the maximum retail price (MRP) on packed products. However, service charges are a separate matter and are not regulated by MRP regulations. Hotels and restaurants may choose to levy service charges, but they should clearly communicate this to customers and display it prominently. It's always a good idea to check with the hotel or restaurant about their pricing policies before making a purchase.

Ravi Patel… hmm, so it’s ok for western companies to buy all this stuff cheaply from the locals and flog them in the west for 500% mark up? To be honest, westerners should not complain about being ripped off for hand made goods in India… they would be readily pay 10 times that much in a department store in any European country..😏
