    If only this video was released a few month ago before, I would have known how to avoid it a bit (I didn't pay anything, just I lose 5 or 6 hours when I arrived in Delhi because scammers were trying to stop me to go into a cab or tuk-tuk, and bringing me again and again to different tourism office.
    For the full story, I landed at 6AM or something. I jumped into a cab that was supposed to bring me to my hotel. When we entered in Delhi, he simulated an engine failure and ask a tuk-tuk driver to bring me to my hotel After 2 or 3 minutes, we passed by a street where people (scammers I guess) stopped us and said that the neighbourhood was closed for tourist by the police because of some murders and I had to go to the tourism office to ask for help. So my Tuktuk driver brings me to one, that I thought was weird. Inside, I explained the situation and the guy proposed me to call my hotel but hide the phone when he was composing the number then give the phone where a guy told me "yeah the hotel is closed because of a situation". Then the man for the tourism office tells me that anyway, it was very hard to stay in Delhi for the next days because of a giant strike and that I just should leave for another city so he proposed me to buy some plane or train tickets and to book an accommodation.
    I told him that I wanted to think and to take a smoke, so I went outside with my big bag pack and just left because the situation felt weird to me.
    The TukTuk driver that brought me there began to follow me and to tell me to return to the shop, I said no and that I wanted to try to reach my hotel anyway to see what they will tell me but it didn't discourage him, he continues to follow me and when I was trying to ask another tuk-tuk driver he (I am supposing) was saying to them to not take me in their vehicle.
    After maybe 1 hour, he was still following me so I went into a Starbucks. I stayed one hour trying to figure out how to go to my hotel walking.
    When I left Starbucks, the guy was gone so I began to walk but with my bags almost immediately people knew that I was a tourist and around this place people wouldn't take me to my hotel but keep proposing to me to go to the tourism office.
    A guy (the first of maybe 5 or 6) offered his assistance and to show me the direction of my hotel, but after 10 minutes of walking, he told me that finally, he thought that it was better to go to the "real" tourism office to ask for help. (He brought me in the one that we can see in the video at 2:10). I was tired as fuck, so I thought maybe this one will try to help me and at least I will be able to rest for a while. I explained to the guy my situation and he called me hotel but this time, he told me that my hotel was open and that the other guy lied to me and that they can send someone to pick me up in 30 minutes. So I had some trust in him because of that (moderately but still).
    For the next 30 minutes, he began to show me hotels and trains and planes etc for prices that I thought were "suspicious", like €2000 for 2 weeks of train. As I didn't sleep for almost 24h, I just told him, yeah but not, I want to sleep on it and maybe later. After 30 minutes the "hotel" called again and told me that finally, they can be there in 1H, so he continued to sell me that stuff but I still declined politely each time. After another 30 minutes, the "hotel" called again to say one more hour. So I thought that "ok they are definitively trying to steal me" so I left. I went back the circular "place" where I saw earlier a lot of TukTuk. On my way I was approached by 5 or 6 men that wanted to "help" me, at this point, I was pretty mad, so my only reply was "fuck off".
    I looked for a ride, but no one wanted to pick me, so I finally decided to overpay a TukTuk to just bring me to my hotel and at two or three times the normal rate one did.
    I arrived at my hotel, everything was fine, I was able to check in etc.
    In other cities, I didn't have so much trouble, but New Delhi was a nightmare when they can see that you just arrived.

      Lol. If you are coming from a developed country like UK, Germany, Canada where you are a polite, law abiding citizen because that is the norm then you're going to have serious problems visiting a country like India. You have to leave that mentality at the door. It will sound harsh, but you quite literally have to view and treat them as second class citizens, think of them as dogs. They only think of you as a fat cash cow and want to take advantage of your polite nature. Treat them like shit, if a tuk tuk says he won't take you, get in his face, talk fast aggressive English, wave your phone and make sure he hears the word "police". At this point he will quite literally carry you there on his back. This is the nature of people in developed countries, you either adapt or get taken advantage of.

    I found they do this in Thailand as well. Usually they hang around the general area where they get commission from several different businesses, and once they wrangle information out of you, like where you're going, what you're doing, shopping, eating, travelling, and then bring you to "their" place. Sometimes they'll even have a tuk-tuk driver waiting nearby to take you to a specific tour operator or shop. Or they might even offer you a ride on their scooter.
    They have several scams on some of the less reputable long bus journeys too. They purposely swap you between several buses, and make everybody wait a few hours at a cafe out in the middle of nowhere to "swap buses". Almost forcing you to buy expensive sandwiches, water, coffee at their cafe out of sheer boredom. The cafe is literally a fridge, a few seats, out in the middle of the jungle!
    This can happen several times on one journey, sometimes the next bus is actually there already, but they still make everybody wait. Like as if they're waiting for the cafe at the next destination to open, or to be restocked.
    Then they tell you that you are getting dropped off out in the middle of nowhere at the end of the journey, instead of in the city center, and that you can get their minibus to your hotel. They try REALLY hard to get people to buy a ticket for the minibus before they get off the main bus.
    Everybody is generally tired, and restless after the 12 hour journey that they don't want to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere and so usually end up paying the extra €6 or so for the minibus.
    I was one of the only people who didn't take up their offer of the minibus, and they weren't happy about it. But I did finally cave when we got to the destination. We were dropped off out in the middle of nowhere. Pure scam.
    It's blatantly obvious that these guys are trying to squeeze as much money as possible out of everyone on the bus.

    I got 'scammed' a few times out of a few dollars.. so what? All part of the adventure. Amazing place and wonderful people!
    The funniest scam was at Goa.. a guy approached me and started cleaning my ears with some stick.. he kept getting more and more gunk out my ears and i was shocked... and then demanded 2000 rupees for cleaning them. I gave him 200 and told him to clear off.. i later realized that he was standing behind me while digging in my ears and kept putting more gunk on his stick where i couldnt see!

      Earthling1984 catfishing is often just a term for being something you aren't, in this case the video producer is pretending to be a new tourist to india, but in reality he knows ver much about the scams & how the scammers are, if that makes sense:-)

    • @chronicpwnage

      "Catfishing" means "pretending to be someone you're not"
      Often it's a scammer pretending to be an attractive woman or man over text messages, building rapport and a relationship, and then trying to get money out of you. In this case, Karl is pretending to be a naive tourist so he can showcase how these scams work, when in reality he knows exactly what they're doing.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984 7 лет назад +9

      Yes, I didn't need any explanation. I fully understand what was happening. Just saying, in the USA, 'catfishing' often implies an ugly person online trying to fool and be in a relationship with someone else. Sometimes money can be involved, but, usually the scam is just for the emotional enjoyment the catfish gets by lying.

    • @chronicpwnage
      @chronicpwnage 7 лет назад +2

      I'm just saying that while that's a common connotation, I think it's fine to use the word here to describe pretending to be a sucker, just like online "catfishes" pretend to be someone they're not.

Ok so you might need to keep your wits about you from time to time (every country has its 'undesirables'), but it's extremely beautiful, very rich in culture and incredibly diverse, that it's well worth the effort. I was victim of a chained scam in new delhi railway station. I wanted to buy a cheap train ticket to Agra. I went to the counter and before I could speak to the lady behind the glass, a men told me that the train I wanted to get is only for tomorrow, that it takes more than 6 hours and that I should go to the tourist information office to buy an express ticket. He said the tourist office was in another place and that zi should get a tuc-tuc. To gain my trust he told me that I should only accept a tuc-tuc that costs no more than 30 rupies. The tuc-tuc brought me to exactly the same agency I saw in this video. As the guy in the video I thought, this is a small street for such an important office no? It started ti smell bad. The guy in the agency had a first question: where are you from? In this way they know how much money you have and how easy is to cheat you. Then they kept asking questions without being really professional: where do you go? What are your plans? My advice wpuld be never answer precise answers. After the round of questions, he checked in the internet ( not any specific software) for the train connection and he said that cheap class was finished that I should buy first class for 1600 rupies. I said I was not interested, that I wanted to travel in the cheap class and when they felt I was not a profitable victim they let me go. When I left the agency, a tuc-tuc driver came and said to me that this was not an official agency, that he would bring me to the real one. Not knowing what to do, I accepted and again he brought me to an agency. In the second agency it was the same story. I left and a third tuc-tuc driver told me the same story. It is a chain of scams driven by a mafia which I believe is dangerous. So be careful! I scaped the situation because I of course did not accept the tuc-tuc driver to bring me to a third place, I told him I wanted to go to New Delhi railway. He tried to persued me going somewhere else so I jumped out the tuc-tuc, walked to a main road and asked some middle-class looking indian people for help. They arranged me in the street a tuc-tuc to go to New Delhi railway. Once there, when I was attemptimg to access the building, a men told me I couldn't do so without a ticket. He showed me some kind of fake card and showed me where shoulsmd I go. After being cheated twice I wasn't trusting on him anymore. Luckily I saw some tourist who where walking towards the station and they told me this was another scam, that no one should stop me from accessing the railway station. Once there, I had to fight quite a lot to get a cheap ticket. I believe they dont want the tourist to travel in the cheapest unreserved seats because they are normally very full, because they think you can afford a higher cost transportation or because they may think this is not the way to travel for tourists. It was altogether a nightmare.

    We have been here so long and so many times, we get free auto rides sometimes by stopping in these shops and pretending to look around. Scamming the scammers. To be fair, some of these shops have handcrafted, one of a kind jewellery, which, if I had the money, I would have bought. It's still way cheaper than buying the same after it's been exported.
    Unfortunately, we have done every one of these shops in Connaught Place and Paharganj and no more free auto rides for us.
    People here need to understand that Paharganj and Connaught place are not the real India. They are well known for cheating everyone, even Indians. This does not reflect the majority of the people in India. Certain places are well known for blatantly cheating, especially white skinned people. So it's good to be aware of how not to get scammed. But it would be a shame for people to misjudge this extraordinary, generous, and diverse country.
    I've seen a jumper in Australia selling for $30 for sale in another shop for $90. Cheaters are everywhere.
