Unfortunately he didn’t know how to use the Uber/Ola App and which metro stop was the closest to him. I couldn’t pick him up because of my office timings and by the time i called him to book an Uber for him (knowing how these people scam you) he had already gotten into a cab. The taxi driver won’t even discuss the price and will drop you to the location and then extort unreasonably high prices (mentioning road taxes, parking charges, extra luggage tow charge, oil prices). The worst part is that they generally pick an un crowded road to drop you off so if the heckling goes out of hand, they can use force. It pains me to say that i couldn’t reach over there to help him out or pick him up. Some Indians do this under the pretence or an excuses of having a hard/poor life, but no one should resort to such petty methods of borderline thievery. With enough hard work and patience one can make a comfortable honest living. Thank You so much for spreading awareness and making these videos!

I found this really funny because although I'm white I was born and grew up in India. So many people don't realise that I speak Hindi, Gujarati, and Tamil. I've really let loose on some people that have called me names and it's hilarious.
Meanwhile in China it's illegal to film on the streets without permission or to film poverty because they would rather save face than to raise awareness of these issues
The abusive guy didn't really have to open his mouth. His 'class' was exuding even without him uttering a word. You could easily see through the first 'Listen my friend' guy. He considers himself a smooth talker; smooth enough to convince you to take his ride. Glad you didn't fall for any of it 😇
I always take a prepaid taxi and everyone pays the same price at the prepaid office. You are helping so many foreigners not to get cheated by private and even unregistered taxis. You are also safe in the taxi because the driver is allocated to you. A woman from Byron Bay, Australia was robbed and murdered by a random taxi driver.
Also just a helpful insight : the reason they were asking for the hotel name was because they usually have contacts in (some) hotels and will get commissions if they bring people there. If you would have told them your hotel name and if in that hotel they won't get commissions, then they probably would have manipulated you by taking you to a different hotel (where they have contacts) by giving the excuse - "this hotel is better" or "the previous hotel is closed" etc. Just telling them that you had to go to main market was a brilliant move.
Just imagine if you were in their shoes and you wanted to scam you...all manner of reasons, excuses, tripe would flow out from their mouths to entice you to follow their advice but remember nothing is free, even free advice will cost you...so take everything told to our with a pinch of salt...better to deny everything to these touts or fraudsters or scammers and happily go about your own booked hotel...
That doesn't always work, either. I told a tuk-tuk driver at the Phnom Penh airport to take me to the Royal Palace (my hotel was steps away from the Palace). Instead of taking me to the Palace the driver took me to a hotel paying him a commission and then arrogantly told me to walk the rest of the way.

I am an Indian and I am terrified of exiting railway stations or airports in the country becasue of these guys (they can get abusive and violent and they gang up against you). Given that, I think Karl held his own very nicely. Also, note that pre-paid taxis are themselves expensive, with prices jacked up as much as 100% because of pressure from these private guys. So the government also extorts, but to a smaller degree.
Srini Sivabalan Very true. In India they are connected to the underworld. Some underworld guys give them "protection" in return for a cut from their earnings...which means they get "assured" business. They really harass passengers...so it's a better idea to go to the pre-paid cabs or autos. It's hopefully safer, especially if your an outsider.
Here in the USA it is typical for it to cost about $20 for a taxi from an airport to a hotel. Fuel is expensive the world over and, I'd think, so is auto insurance. Plus any taxi licensing fees. So perhaps the government tickets for private taxis are actually short changing the taxi drivers. It sounds like the pre-paid scheme one is taking the same taxi just presenting a ticket instead of paying money to the cab driver which, presumably, they turn in to the government to get 400 rupees? Do I understand this correctly? But your correct that this Karl guy didn't let himself get intimidated and that's good.
@@Anon54387 They are NOT "short-changing" the drivers. In Bangalore, the pre-paid counter takes just a token 1 rupee as charges and the rest goes only to the driver.
To be fair these guys are all over the world and it can sometimes be fair. when I went to Paris I paid a scammer 70 euro instead of waiting in line for the 60 euro official taxi
Such scammers really make me angry, especially the one who was abusive. Keep making such videos as they are very helpful to all the people. Keep it up.👍
Rule of thumb for arriving anywhere: just use the pre-paid taxi stand. That way there's less chance of getting ripped off and if you have a complaint, you have an actual taxi company that you can contact.
Youre still not safe. We asked out hotel in Paris to call us a taxi from a real company. Got in and the fare was already over twenty Euro. We asked why and he said he had come from Gare Du Nord and driven halfway across Paris to pick us up so we need to pay for that. We told him to pull the fuck over and got out.
Question, why did you go to Delhi?! When you can always go somewhere like Mumbai, Goa or somewhere else part of India.. We Indian too never feel save in Delhi as well
Had faced this before and now the best way to deal with this is 1) Opt for Meru cabs. Their counter is just around the Prepaid Taxi cab. They charge 5 to 10% extra over the prepaid taxi however their car's are in better condition and fully AC. Never had issues with them even after midnight. 2) If you're taking uber at the Arrival Zone, you need to go to Departure zone to get the Uber faster because they are charged extra if they come to arrival and you can save money there 3) Opt for prepaid taxi(Delhi police) like you see in the video. This is the last option because if you land at night then good luck with finding the taxis because these notorious drivers straight out reject you and noone from Delhi police will come to help. However during the day time its probably easier. However, if suppose you do get a taxi and he is trying to wait for other passengers so as to share with you then go ahead and move out of the car and complain to the police nearby as they are not allowed to do that. One trick to avoid rejection from these prepaid taxi drivers is that when they ask you "where are you going", without saying a word, get into the taxi because once you are in the taxi, they CANNOT throw you out from taxi as they have to drop you wherever you want to go. 4) Download the DMRC app and go for Delhi Metro to find your routes. If you have too many luggage then you can avoid it but its best option for solo travellers.
xyoopridex India is a blast. You have to be street smart thought. If you go there thinking that you can do things just as you do them at home, then you’ll run into a lot of trouble. Ideally you should go there with someone who has been there before or a native. Overall, lots of fun and fascinating experience.
I am an Indian and unfortunately I agree with this comment. I sincerely apologise for the experience you had. I face this on a daily basis while traveling to college or back home. It amazes me that many people still don't know that in any country where the majority of the population is a shade browner than butter, it is customary to barter over anything. You never ever pay the asking price for any product or service. It's not a scam it's just part of culture.
Agreed, but its not just with foreigners.. They do that with anybody who are new to city(esp. with people who doesn't know the local language).. Download Ola or uber app and book the cab.. You can even book auto rickshaw with it..
ofc its more with foreigners cos now all the foreigners that come here enter with dumb fucking faces without any sense/knowledge beforehand, don't read the big wide prepaid taxi boards, don't have common sense then ofc they deserve to get scammed lmao. and its more only by a small margin as its been mentioned before it happens to everyone especially if you look like/have the expression of an outsider.

Funny how the guy said "only $20" which makes it sound cheap to the westerners but the real cost is around $7. This is not an issue with just India. in the US there are no such thing as "prepaid taxis" at any airports and some airports don't even have metros connecting them to rest of the city so you will get ripped off by taxis there. A 30 minute ride from LAX to Hollywood will cost you nearly $100 in a yellow cab.
Don't get me started on Taxis in New Zealand. They all use a metre but the rates are so high. It costs me around 7-8k INR to get home from the airport. So I never take them. Uber is half that price at least.
Renting a car for a day used to be cheaper than a taxi ride, depending on where you were going, until the corrupt govt of CA (Democrats obviously) discovered this "loophole" and padded it with taxes.
Gouging visitors is what most state governments do but CA takes it to another level. I live in a neighboring state so I have to deal with it frequently.

Thanks. People need to know this. Or we can tell them that we have already paid for the room so we don’t want to go to another hotel.
Very true ,
I read this now and learned about it .I went to Gujarat to one hotel and the auto drivers there told another hotel was better

Pre paid costs more, it is the price for safety. Some hotel cars also cost more, but many offer complimentary pick up and drop off.

Had faced this before and now the best way to deal with this is
1) Opt for Meru cabs. Their counter is just around the Prepaid Taxi cab. They charge 5 to 10% extra over the prepaid taxi however their car's are in better condition and fully AC. Never had issues with them even after midnight.
2) If you're taking uber at the Arrival Zone, you need to go to Departure zone to get the Uber faster because they are charged extra if they come to arrival and you can save money there
3) Opt for prepaid taxi(Delhi police) like you see in the video.
Good tips thanks bro

Funny how the guy said "only $20" which makes it sound cheap to the westerners but the real cost is around $7. This is not an issue with just India. in the US there are no such thing as "prepaid taxis" at any airports and some airports don't even have metros connecting them to rest of the city so you will get ripped off by taxis there. A 30 minute ride from LAX to Hollywood will cost you nearly $100 in a yellow cab.
