      It gets quite overwhelming with amount of options. Set yourself a budget and then see what the best option is to go for that. Apple has a refurbished part of their store where you can get the previous generation iPads for a lot cheaper.

    Amazing, Ian. The Procreate layer test was indeed one of the first things I was wondering about the new iPads Pro regarding the 16GB RAM lol. I've preordered the 1TB 12,9 iPad Pro and I'm upgrading from the 2nd generation 12,9 (with Touch ID) so I'm really looking forward to give it a shot.

    Thanks for the honesty! I'm also a full-time digital artist, coming from using Sketchbook for many years. It's time for an upgrade now that I can afford it. I tested Procreate out on my boyfriend's iPad and I was HOOKED. I just ordered the 12.9 2021 iPad (256gb) yesterday - I admit my heart sank from seeing the total price including the pencil, but I know it'll be worth it when it gets here.
    I may not use the name brand Paperlike, but may use an off-brand. I love matte screen protectors to give me that resistance on a glass screen.
    Anyway, this was helpful. Thanks again!

    Ian, what are your suggestions for deciding which RAM and storage size to go with?

    • @IanBarnard
      @IanBarnard  3 года назад +6

      Storage wise it's always best to go for 128 or 256GB as a minimum but the problem is you only get 8GB RAM with those storage option. The 1tb is a good one to go for if you can afford it so you get the 16GB RAM, but if you can't afford that then maybe get the 1tb versions of either the 2020 iPad or 2018 ones. Hope that helps.

    I'm coming from the first generation iPad Pro and am a full time designer. Should I be looking at going with a 256gb or the 1TB specifically for the 16gb of ram?
    I say 256gb because worrying about the 128gb seems like a waste of time and the 512 gb seems like a waste of money considering you can buy an external or demo files elsewhere when you reach that high.
    Whats unclear is the need to go to the 1TB. I could see it being a great investment for the need for more power for apps later down the road, but would I still ]even need or use it?

    Hii. It was a great video. Some of the questions I was wondering about was answered by you. Thank u so much!
    I just have one another question about this device. I came to know it is a little thicker than the previous model. Does that mean we would feel a slight gap between the pencil and the screen while drawing or writing? In the last gen it was said that there was hardly any gap and it felt like writing on the screen itself unlike the air or the previous models. (Surely paperlike increases the beauty of drawing on another level.) But do u feel any gap between the glass and the screen. I just want to know your experience in that part. Thank you!

    • @IanBarnard
      @IanBarnard  3 года назад

      Personally I've never notice any form of gap while using my Paperlike on the iPad. I did when using the entry level iPad which doesn't use the same touch screen as the iPad air and iPad Pro. The new iPad Pro is 0.5mm thicker which I don't really makes a difference to how the pencil interacts with the screen.

    Just in case. My main use of the iPad Pro 2020 is as a laptop with the Magic Keyboard, but sometimes I also use it as a notebook with the Pencil. That is why I do not have a screen protector on it, so when I want to feel the typical friction of writing on paper what I do is put a transparent plastic sheet with texture on the screen, and it works great, because also depending on the sheet I put on, I can change the feeling of normal paper or paper with more texture.

    • @IanBarnard
      @IanBarnard  3 года назад

      @@IanBarnard Hi Ian. Only placed on top, with some plastics I use adhesive tape for greater freedom, it is a bit cumbersome at first but I think that, especially with the new screen, it is an interesting option to enjoy both possibilities (leisure and work). Thanks for this great first look at the latest iPad Pro. I’m using an iPad Pro 2018, 12.9” model. I’ve had a problem with Procreate heating up the iPad, to a point it actually is a bit uncomfortable. Apple told me this won’t hurt anything, Procreate tech support said they’d look into it but never got back to me after that. I wonder if you have had this experience on older model iPads, and if you find it happening in this latest version. Also, please do update when the newer version of Procreate comes out. The price of upgrading would be a real challenge to my budget, but I’d really love to have more layers in Procreate. Thanks again.

    Was certainly looking forward to yours and other illustration-focused reviews. I don’t find myself necessarily killing the procreate layer limit but more is always nicer! So that will remain to be seen where it lands. I think the largest thing that would push me to upgrade is the file transfer speeds, my 3rd gen is no slouch for photo edits but moving as many photos as I do on and off the internal storage will be a thing I’m going to watch very closely in reviews. I’m sure I’m not going to notice anything aside from layer count, transfer speeds, and battery performance, the UI speed has been phenomenal for a good while now. Which is a relief.

      I have 2020 year 11" iPad Pro 128GB and if you can afford it, I would go a bit higher with the memory. I don't think it's a dealbreaker, I manage to work with this capacity, but iCloud isn't super intuitive as a backup for procreate, and I've had multiple cases when I had to paint for multiple big projects simultaneously, needing to store all files locally and it got a bit sluggish sometimes as the device approached its memory limit. iPad does have the option to offload unused apps or help with managing your storage but if you can go a bit higher, it will help in my opinion.

    In Brad Colbow's video on this ipad (another artist's first impressions) he says that on the new 12.9 screen you can see a shadow in the edges of the screen compared to other ipad pros and that the screen feels a bit thicker than previous generations, have you experienced similar things? He's the only youtuber that has said that and maybe his device is faulty. Thx!

      I hadn't noticed that myself but I'll take another look when I'm on it and check to see if I get that on mine. Brad is a seasoned professional for tablet reviewing so he probably has a better eye for it than I do.

    One reviewer said there is a shadowing at the screen edges that wasn’t there on the previous model. Yet another said the battery life could vary between 5 to 10 hours while doing the same tasks. What’s your impressions regarding these two things? Thanks for the video!

      @IanBarnard  3 года назад +1

      With only having it for 5 days I haven't had a chance to properly test out the battery yet but I've only charged it once and it's been fine so far. Need to test the screen edge shadowing as I hadn't noticed it but I'll do some tests to see if it does show up on mine.

    Hello Ian, I am seeing reviews that the Ipad 2021 XDR 12.9" screen has a parallax effect because of the distance between the screens while drawing in procreate and also there is an inner shadow effect on the corner of the screens in canvas. Is this true?. Can you pl let me know your reviews?

      same here , I'm switching from wacom to ipads but the 2021 12.9" screen seems it has lots of issues , especially the "inner shadow effect" , this probably can't be fixed with an software update , so I'm thinking of going for the 2020 12.9" or if wwdc pulls off some specific feature only for the M1 ipads that I really need , gonna go with 11" 2021 ipad pro. "inner shadow effect" and blooming issues on 2021 12.9" are a deal breaker for me

    Nice review, it doesnt make any sense to buy it over 2020 IMO, price difference is not worth it, 2020 is already overkill for art and prices dropped bit lately. If money isnt a cosnsideration thats a different story.

Could you try the A2 (420 x 297mm) & A3 (594 x 420mm) sizes at 300 DPI? I think that's only temporary. With the power of the machine you should be getting much more than that. There are always teething problems when a new chip is introduced and it takes a bit of time for the apps to adjust and make use of the new power.
