I’m a digital artist and bought M1 12.9 more than a year ago and it’s really of great help but when M2 came out with its new hoover feature I was heartbroken. The feature will definitely make digital artists job better, faster and easier. But well, I gotta stick to M1 and be happy with it. It still does the job.
    Great video as always, sir!

I’m in the same boat - I’m a professional multimedia artist and really wanted the M2 because of the hover feature, but I’m also on a budget. It was impossible to pass up a 2TB 12.9 M1 for $1500. I will simply have to be patient for when it’s truly time to upgrade.

As a multimedia artist, I really appreciate your humility in making this video; it was becoming infuriating seeing how many RUclipsrs were calling the new Pro IPads “not Pro” because they lacked Final Cut Pro or some version of MacOS. I am lucky enough to own a 2TB 12.9 M1 and it destroys, but I actually regularly run into moments where the M2 version would be faster. I use 3D software as well as layer-based design and illustration software where I am feeling the limits of a non-cooled M1 processor. Furthermore the hover feature would, indeed, make some workflows that much more fluid.
That said, we all eventually choose a moment to jump into a certain product’s evolution. I’m glad to have my very Pro IPad.

This is a good take and, as someone who has made videos questioning the iPad as a pro tool, it's since occurred to me that the real beauty of the iPad is using it as a tablet with a pencil and not trying to make it be a laptop. I kind of asked myself why would I even throw shade at it anyway? I love my iPad Pro and even though it has some shortcomings that changes nothing about how integrated into my daily life it is. 👍🏻

I upgraded to an M1 iPad Pro 12.9", maxed out with 2tb of storage for what I thought would solve me use-case, which was CaptureOne for iPad. For me, I shoot fashion sessions with 1.5tb of RAW files, and it seemed as if culling images on an iPad would be easier. However, while 2tb of storage is great, CaptureOne screwed their own PhaseOne owners by not using a communications protocol allowing PhaseOne digital back communications (a long story for those of you who are not PhaseOne owners). Either way, now I have a maxed out iPad that only serves to let me consume content while laying on the couch. So, I understand the anxiety of FinalCut Pro users who are pissed at Apple.

It’s March 2024 for me, and I’ve just treated myself to my first new iPad since I bought an iPad mini 8 years ago! I got the 11” with Magic Keyboard and 2nd gen Pencil for £550 and I’m very pleased with the deal. It’s probably overkill for my use case, however it should future proof the purchase for another 5+ years. The accessories alone are worth £400 if I was to buy them new. I’m watching this over a year since you posted this. Despite the M3 iPad Pro coming up soon at the time I’m writing this (March 2024), I believe this is still great advice. In fact, my M1 iPad Pro 12.9 is much more versatile than when I first got it with the additional software updates including stage manager, being able to use Zoom/ FaceTime/google meet without it overtaking the whole device, and being able to properly hook it up to external monitors and cameras. Due to the hardware being extreme overkill in 2021, it’s my only “computer” that have and likely will continue to become more versatile and better for at least several more years.

I really like my M1 iPad Pro, but as you note, Patrick, it’s WAY overkill for nothing to really use on it; at least from my experience.
I love the screen and smoothness of it, but I hate that there is still no full screen mirroring support. I have Shift Screen that you recommend one time, but I only use it here and there. It’s a little clunky, in my opinion.
We have had four iPads over the years and every one of them has had its quirks. I’m not sure what it is with Apple, but my iPad Pro will all of a sudden just start doing strange things sometimes. A hard reset almost always corrects it, but it’s still aggravating.
I have been mirroring my iPad Pro to my LG OLED for months through the lightning port with an HDMI cable. As of yesterday, it will no no longer mirror that way, so I have to use the AppleTV, which works, but has its shortcomings. Frustrating.
I hate to say it, but to me at least, Apply products have become the “lesser of the two evils” when it comes to Windows and Apple machines. Apple is way better than Windblows, but Apple has its issues, and a fair amount of them.
Merry Christmas from Texas to you and your family, Patrick.

Strange as it may be, day before yesterday I downloaded the iPadOS 16.2 update. I just did a cursory look at the improvements, but I did not see that full screen support was being brought back…….for the second time. Again, I just did a cursory look.
Once I downloaded it and restarted the iPad, everything seemed as usual as it was prior. Keep in mind, I have kept the HDMI cable connected to a dock and the LG OLED, which then runs to the iPad with the lighting power/HDMI cable.
Yesterday evening, I noticed the iPad was not charging. So I reseated the power cord “at the socket”. I noticed a message that popped up on the iPad that said something to the nature of full screen mirroring through Stage Manager was now occurring. Low and behold, I now have full screen support through the HDMI lighting connector.
Why it didn’t work as soon as the 16.2 update was complete, I don’t know. Yet again, it appears to be another Apple quirk, but at least it is all working and, YEAH!; Full screen mirroring support directly from the iPad. It’s a game changer.

Pls let me know, I recently got an m1 iPad pro 11 inch 256 gb on boxing day sale in Canada on a discount of 150 cad. Altogether, it cost me 949 cad $. ( Note the iPad air m1 256 costs 999)
I ignored the M2 iPad pro because it was already 100 dollars more expensive than the regular price of the m1. So the 256 GB M2 would cost me 1229 cad $. So altogether 1229-949 = saved me 280 dollars. Probably, I will buy apple pencil in the future.
Just, wondering is it worth saving that by ignoring m2. I normally gonna do photo editing and 1080 p video editing with light gaming I know the M2 may be some seconds faster in very heavy task. I can still return my m1 iPad and get the m2 version, but it will put me quite close to MacBook m2 price range which can do more stuffs.

I’m looking to upgrade to a new ipad in June this year. I’m mostly leaning towards the M2 but the M1 seems nice with the discounts but it was released in March 2021 which would make it 2 years old in june which means 2 years less software support. It’s really tough to choose which ipad to get.

M2 has only one or two features and apps. Very niche set for digital artists.
Home users don't need all the collaboration stuff.
Any iPad apps will work since it's designed for the average iPad with less ram.
I bought the M1 Pro with 256 GB after seeing the iPad 10 announcement.
I got it refurbished and used Affirm so I don't have to pay it all at once.
iPad Air had only 60 hz and less ram. I was disappointed...

The lack of Apple’s pro apps on the iPad, to this day, continues to be quite the omission. I know that for music production, it still has GarageBand, but there hasn’t been a serious update to it in over SIX YEARS, when it introduced Live Loops and the Beat Sequencer, both now part of Logic Pro with way more features. Meanwhile, no Logic Pro to take advantage of the Apple silicon chips (on the iPad Pro). I know that Apple tries to only release products when they are ready, but there are so few apps that need such chips, that the high bar I still hope for is…meh.

  • @maxwell-cole

Interesting. I’ve watched their videos too. Hover feature is nice but should be on m1 too. Problem is, are we evaluating the hardware or the lack of software available now? Tech RUclips seem to mix both with good reason. But, it’s often unfair… Hardware wise, both smoke everything on the market. A separate conversation about iOS software, and the lack of development to utilize this hardware is not something that I see happening often. Apple seems to really only focus on hardware nowadays. I mean, if you look at the entire Pages, Numbers, Keynote, suite, and how very few updates happen on the very few apps that Apple actually develops, I think it’s up to third-party vendors to finally make software that works for these devices, and then gives people pro features. So maybe we should call out adobe and other vendors, rather than relying on final cut. At least Luma to explore in this space. People do have the ability to make professional level apps . I have listened to Tim Cook talk a lot about how he wanted to put the company in a position where the hardware wasn’t restricting the software and now we have a situation where the developers need to catch up. Good video. I mean … who would want to go back to Intel now… I think you have a lot of people that would want to spend the money on a full respect iPad the same way you advertise this Tesla, that you can basically only drive at a certain speed anyhow. Sometimes people one great technology, even if it can’t be 💯 utilized.

Apple Pencil Hover isn’t just a software feature. It requires more sensitive display hardware to work as advertised, which just happens to be the M2 models. As a longtime Wacom tablet user this is an extremely welcome feature to see, but also frustrating that it took this long to be implemented.

Why wouldn't it still be good? iPads are great for several years. M1 is only a year old. More to come for the M1 and M2.
As for Pro Apps, talk to developers ... Too many are about what is and not what could be.
No one buys a Tablet to make top end movies on it. Make something for iPad that uses it's uniqueness and make it work better than FCPX would on it ... keep it lite and fast and take the iPad into its own. Leave the mindset of a "porter" and move into the mindset of an innovative developer.
