    Been using my m4 iPad Pro base model since July. My only regret is not buying more storage with it. I use it primarily for reading, and writing notes. I also use it for content (movie, music) streaming whenever i am at a hotel. Basically my personal content device.

    The M4 ipad pro once again brings back the magical feeling I’ve been longing for since the ipad 2. I used it everyday since launch day and it feels amazing. I don’t hate ipad os and it’s perfect for what I do.

      1- I take my own product photos and edit on the ipad.
      2- sketch some concepts and present in front of the team then get real time feedback from my lead designer and artists. Especially storyboarding the iPad is way more convenient.
      3- I like to draw / paint on the ipad more than on my Cintiq
      4- I also run my ERP app on the ipad, manage about 190 employees for my manufacturing
      5- I take note at my night class using the ipad. (Going for another master degree)
      None of those tasks require me to carry anything other than the ipad and current iOS app.
      6- when I need a teleprompter for a commercial, iPad app is perfect.
      7- just like any other people, I consume content when Im not working.
      That’s me doing nothing haha

    The leap from my ancient iPad 4 to the M4 iPad Pro is mind-blowing! Went all-in with the 13” 1TB + Cellular model, Magic Keyboard, and that sweet new Pencil Pro. Yes, it cost me a small fortune, but considering how long I kept my last iPad, this beast will be my daily driver for years to come. 💪
    One thing though - dear developers, please stop treating iPad apps like stretched-out iPhone versions! We need proper desktop-class functionality built from scratch for iPadOS. The hardware is incredible, now let’s get software that truly matches its potential! 🚀

    • @KyleErickson
      @KyleErickson  2 месяца назад +9

      As a former iOS dev, I kind of get why things are like this - iPadOS is essentially just iOS, so you're mostly just running everything the same under the hood, and I think for most companies, it's a lot easier to justify repurposing everything in that sense. It's also hard at times to break out of that iOS style just given what you have to work with at times, but I agree some apps leave a lot to be desired.

    I think the M4 iPad Pro could become the default device for any work that isn't really computationally intensive if they just allowed you to duel boot macOS. Since the M1 iPad Pro the main let down with the pro iPad's have been iPadOS being too basic to take advantage of the hardware and make iPad's usable for things they can't really do with iPadOS atm.

    Decided to upgrade my 2019 MBP base model with the M4 11” Base model. It’s been such a delight to use as a mobile computing device, with enough punch to make it a portable gaming console, a great school device, and an extremely portable creative machine I can just use for anything. And the screen is just gorgeous. The best screen in my house by a lot, and I appreciate how well it has held up these last few months. I might regret getting the Magic Keyboard, but it just went up in price lately in my region, so I think I made the right move if I ever wanted it in the future.

    I opted for 11” M2 iPad Air. As a programmer, I cannot give up my Mac. So I prefer to user iPad as a tablet first. The price of iPad Pro is not justifiable for me, plus M2 iPad Air is practically an iPad Pro of the past. It’s very powerful for what I need for. Just casual getting things done on the go or when I’m away from my computer + reading and entertainment.

    I bought the 11 inch with 512gb a month ago, using it everyday for editing photos and stream movies. I just love using that pen when it comes to photo editing.
    But to be honest, it’s not faster than my previous one. iPad Pro M2, not for my user case. Also the export in Lightroom is even worse and slower with new update. But one thing they fixed, cleared up storage every time you delete a photo. Before you (or I) had to reinstall Lightroom now and then.
    If you’re not a fanboy like I am and want the latest tech. Go for an older version :)

    Enjoyed the video, thank you! I have the 13 inch myself and I feel like it's my favorite device of all time. It's just incredible at everything, and it's a constant companion throughout my day (I work from home, wife is in healthcare so I'm usually by myself here). I enjoy the large form factor, but I totally respect the Mini is better for some like you mentioned near the end.
    The other device that shocked me recently is the M4 Mini for 499 from the EDU store (anyone can order from there there's no check). 499 for that beast of a computer is the best deal in tech, possibly of all time. I can't wait to use my 13 inch Pro as the secondary monitor for the Mini! Anyways cheers!

    I also had that inner discussion/conflict myself when I decided between the 11 inch M4 or the 13 inch one. And like others have said it's definitely depends on your needs/use case for the individual. I would use this in bed to watch Netflix/RUclips etc so I think the smaller/lighter 11 inch would make more sense/be more comfortable for men for extended use❤️
    I also did buy a magic keyboard and while it's nice to type on the web browser or in messaging apps, I wouldn't use this to type word documents/excel etc. I also have a Surface Pro 9 which has a 13 inch screen and I don't really use it as a tablet TBH so I felt like getting the 13 inch iPad Pro would be redundant/wouldn't make sense for me. So for all these reasons I went with the 11 inch and put a DBrand Skin on the iPad l, the keyboard and am LOVING it so far 💻💻❤❤❤❤❤

      Suggest you have your local Apple store run a diagnostic check on your device. It shouldn’t be running through battery charges so quickly. I had a similar experience with an iphone- took it in for a free evaluation. It took all of 3 minutes for Apple to determine a faulty component inside the phone running hot and draining the battery. Replaced my device on the spot under warranty.

    While everyone seems to want iPadOS to run like macOS, I actually love that it’s a native touch-based OS that can work like a laptop with the keyboard. I appreciate it as it is-the OS brings a sense of simplicity and intuitiveness that macOS just doesn’t offer.

    • @KyleErickson
      @KyleErickson  2 месяца назад +3

      I agree with this premise, but I think this issue here is that this is a $1400 device after everything is said and done. When the iPad was initially dreamt up by Steve Jobs, he saw it as a netbook replacement that would be used in schools as something cheap students could use as a replacement for textbooks and light computing. When you've got something with this level of power and features, you're sort of drifting outside that notion, and I think it's reasonable to expect this to do a lot more.

    • @conorstewart2214
      @conorstewart2214 2 месяца назад

      I don't think many people want to get rid of iPadOS, most want to be able to switch between iPadOS and macOS when they feel like it which should be technically possible since it is the same chips used in MacBooks. Most people just feel that the iPad pro line is going very close to being an actual laptop or notebook and just want apple to actually let it happen which would make it a much more useful device to a lot of people. As it is just now even though you can get a proper laptop style keyboard for it and connect external displays and devices, it is still just a tablet but it is technically capable of so much more and is just held back by the OS.

    • @teresmajor7956
      @teresmajor7956 Месяц назад

      @@conorstewart2214 I totally understand your point. However, as you mentioned, it’s a tablet-first device. As a UX designer with over 15 years of experience designing interactions, I see the inherent conflict in designing for touch-based experiences while also adopting mouse and keyboard patterns simultaneously.
      That said, I can’t think of a better solution than having a touch-based OS with optional keyboard and trackpad support. Trying to fully integrate both paradigms into one OS often results in a subpar experience for both use cases, as seen with Windows 11’s gimmicky touch support.
      Ultimately, the keyboard and trackpad are accessories-optional add-ons. The iPad is still fundamentally a tablet that promises a mobile, touch-first experience, prioritizing media consumption and content use cases over the productivity focus of laptops. I’m not defending it, but I just don’t see any other approach that could work better.

    • @teresmajor7956
      @teresmajor7956 Месяц назад

      @@KyleErickson Apple’s design philosophy would never allow the option to boot an iPad into a different OS-and while I wish it could, I understand why they don’t. For Apple, seamlessness is everything, and the iPad’s keyboard and trackpad are considered accessories, not core to the device. Asking users to choose an OS just to watch Netflix or use touch-based apps would break their vision of a cohesive experience. Instead, what truly needs improvement is the App Store and its ecosystem. Apple should push for a revamp of iPad application design patterns, encouraging developers to create experiences tailored for the iPad, rather than simply scaling up stretched versions of mobile apps.

    i agree with a lot you've said here... I took the plunge & got one, purely wanted mostly for music reasons, and some graphics (pixelmator limited with pencil pro) i'd gone from a 2016 i think it was. 9'7 screen which felt heavier somewhat... for a couple of weeks or so, i've enjoyed using it so far, even transitioning everything wasnt too painful, as it was user error, took 2 tried, but flawless the second time.. the one awkwardness found is the more you tilt the screen, trying to type back letters, the fingers knock the screen edge. the pencil pro was a nice surprise to use.. over all its been good using music apps and the limited pixelmator app.. which i hope they will implement extra controls in a later version.

I ended up cancelling it and just picked up a 11 pro m4 fomo I really didn’t want to spend the money and it’s hard to justify it. I figure that if my 12.9 lasted 8 years and it’s still usable then I should spend the extra 300 to future proof myself as much as possible. I do occasionally use it to edit photos in Lightroom and I want to start simple edits of some videos occasionally. Hard to say if I made the right decision but the display quality is pretty amazing. One other reason I went with the pro. I do go down to Florida to hang out with the parental units a few times a year and I do use it outside. My 2nd gen 12.9 is supposedly 600 nits. It is usable outside but not great. I was worried that going the wrong way with the 500 nits 11” air wasn’t going to be good outside

    I got the M4 iPad Pro 11” a couple months ago. Overpriced? Yep. But I don’t regret it. Few weird bugs though, there is a weird screen-graininess in a dark room and low brightness on the ipad…it’s pretty strange.Sometimes when I’m on data, I can’t click links in a page until the page is completely loaded, which is annoying and only happens few and far between. I love the new trackpad for the magic keyboard, but I love the feel and balance of the older model, but the function row is absolutely worth the triad off. At the end of the day…it is still an ipad, so I still use my PC for work when I get home, but I don’t actually feel the need to run home to get on the PC when I am out and about during the day. The new apple pencil pro’s squeeze feature is freaking game-changing too btw, I use it for eraser, it sounds silly, but it really does improve the writing experience and you can udjust the amount of squeeze you need to activate it, it also unlike the double tap feature, de-activates while you’re writing which is nice.

      Also, turn off math notes and suggestions if you actually write…it is annoying and keeps getting in the way. Turn it back on or something after you are finished writing and stuff. Or…just use a dang calculator lol

    Gosh, I've got the older iPad Pro before the M1 chip, and I really wish it had external screen support (extended). But I'm not keen on buying a new keyboard and pencil all over again... I'm gonna see if I can snag a good deal on the iPad Pro M2 this Black Friday. If not, well, I might just have to treat myself anyway... So expensive, lol!

    I've been really tempted to upgrade from my M2 Pro, but it's just not worth it for me. I've seen the t-oled in person at the store, but it's at full brightness and doesn't look any better than mine, though I'm sure it is. I just forked over for the iPhone 16 Pro Max so Apple won't need money from me for a while. I had a mini6 for a while and I definitely reached for that more than my 12.9" Pro, but I traded it in for an 11" Air - no regrets there.

    Not to sound annoying, but when it comes to the google web applications like sheets, you're not able to use trackpad or mouse clicks on that pop-up button at the bottom.. I have the same problem on my iPad Pro M2 when using my Magic Keyboard or mouse. I also have the problem with the trackpad not scrolling sometimes. Hope this helps.

    It’s interesting 11” iPad Pro still makes iPad mini 7 more conveniently comfortable to you. I own the 12.9 iPad Pro, I didn’t think 11” would do that. I guess it’s about the canvas where an artist has needs for full paintings and the handy pad companion. ❤ nice round up review. I would personally give up mini convenience to use my iPad in my use case.

      I use a screen protector because I got some really faint scratches on mine. It's a double edged sword because it protects the screen, but you also put a little more distance between teh pencil and screen, and it's a little more reflective.

  • @andyH_England

    It is expensive but always has been, and prices have been stable over the last few cycles. The pricing is obvious, and people who cannot afford it will not buy it. So, it is really about those who can afford it and whether they should upgrade this year. As with the MacBooks and iPhones, Apple has made such great devices for the last 4-5 years that they remain relevant, and owners are finding it hard to justify an upgrade even with the new OLED and M4. I only upgraded from my M1 iPad Pro 11 because that never had miniLED, so the display is a good upgrade, and the M4 is a nice step up. It may be harder to justify for owners of iPad Pro 13-inch M1s.
    A fantastic piece of kit that hopefully will last for 5-7 years.

      For Netflix, note taking and RUclips 256gb is great but if you have to download a lot of stuff such as audiobooks and/ or movies especially as well as doing a lot of photography it’s probably best to get an iPad with more storage. Games don’t usually take up that much storage and should be fine for 256gb.

    Are you bothered by the 480hz frequency PWM dimming of the tandem OLED? I acknowledge that most people’s eyes are not sensitive to flickering, however, there are still many people arguing that they suffer from side effects by the pulses of OLED, especially when it comes to a low frequency of 480 times per second.

    For me, the 13-inch iPad Pro with the M4 chip has completely replaced my Mac, which I eventually sold.
    I still keep a Windows PC for gaming, as Windows remains the dominant platform for PC games. Beyond that, mobile devices have taken over tasks I used to perform on laptops.
    The iPad’s design offers a simplicity that traditional PC operating systems lack, yet it doesn’t feel limiting. With cloud services now available for various tasks, an iPad meets the needs of most people, alongside a smartphone, of course.
    I’m eager to see how artificial intelligence will influence and transform computing in general.

    I honestly don't think this is worth it. They are making us pay for a piece of hardware which doesn't get used almost at all by most apps. That freaking device is way too powerful for it to have the normal restrictions that an ipad has with that OS. I hope in the next few years apple will fuse macos and ipad os to make them one and the same thing.

      Bruh modern oled last upwards of 5 years. Here apple is using 2 oled panels, so each individual panel has to work even less hard, so it will last even longer.
      And none of Samsung’s new flagship oled screens have faced any burn in, cheaper panel of course will

      It’s not really an issue anymore, the screens technology improvements, on top of the tandem design which reduces the required brightness for each panel, they also use pixel shift. If you kept it at maximum brightness on the same image for days I imagine it would burn in over time but that’s not a realistic use case.
