i upgraded from 11” m1 to 13” M4, and I love my m4 iPad pro, using it for heavy gaming, digital art on procreate, and watching movies and note taking in college, and the battery life is amazing and lasts a day with 80% limit! I use it with a removable magnetic ESR paper-feel screen protector and nillkin bumper case. The iPad OS is so smooth and easy to use as always, and when i see so many youtubers like MKBHD who say this is a waist of money only ‘cause it doesn’t run MAC OS, well, files app sure need more upgrades but i say things don’t exactly work that way! the whole point of iPad is to make you do the things you used to do on computer the easier way on iPad, it it run a desktop os completely it’s the same thing again, and we already have Microsoft surfaces for years but why they don’t get much attention while they run windows all the time? Even now that surfaces are switched to ARM and have more power and efficiency? The point is iPad actually is good the way it is, and youtubers or people arguing about lack of proper software on iPads may see the story from a not so right aspect.

I'm glad you could cover all your bases for what you do. In my case I tried that route but failed to convert. The reason was that Excel for the iPad doesn't have analytical tools that I needed. As in right now they simply do not exist for the iPad version. I also tried the Excel online version to no avail. The greatness about the iPad is that there are new things you could do that with a laptop you can't!

I can stream movies on Netflix for example with little drain, but when I watch RUclips, it’ll drain in hours. I use an attachable keyboard which weighs a lot. Leaving it behind on short trips makes sense. Cheers!

M1 MacBook gave me a big ol black screen of death and have not been able to fix it no matter how many tutorials I’ve gone through basically repeating the same solutions. Quotes to get it fixed in my area seemed absurd, but I was desperate and prepared to hand in the money. I got an iPad Pro as Christmas gift and it feels like it’s been everything I’ve needed. Not rushing to fix my MacBook now as I do have a PC, but a portable computer is crucial to my workflow and this seems to be doing the job.

Excel and Word apps nowhere near where they need to be to replace desktop versions.
    Excel, no pivot tables.
Word, can’t define styles (Title, Heading 1, Heading 2, etc)
Web apps slightly better, but laggy.
These are normal user, not pro features.

I really like desktop operating systems, mainly because window management is leagues above iPadOS (unless you’ve got an external display). Stage Manager helps, but I find myself picking up my MacBook over my iPad 9 times out of 10 for school or work unless I really need the pencil. Excellent video, though! My dream is to only live with an iPad. Although I love my Mac, I absolutely adore the iPad concept. I have an iPad Pro M1 11”, and I’m wondering into upgrading into an M4, but I don’t see the real need… yet. I’m a software developer, and that’s the biggest no-no in the iPad usage. I’m constantly looking for ways to develop using native apps (like Swift Playgrounds) or connecting through SSH to a Raspberry Pi, where I have all the needs to code freely. I’m still experimenting, so I haven’t made the jump to an iPad only life. I think it’s far from now, because making apps for another Apple platforms (macOS, tvOS, watchOS and visionOS) can’t be done without a Mac. But I’m still hoping, because I really enjoy using my iPad.

I've been using a iPad Pro for a few years now (M2) and often use MS Remote Desktop to connect to a more powerful machine for my day-to-day. MS are set to bring a new Windows app to the iPad, which will allow integration with Azure virtual desktops, which will make the iPad an even better solution. For me, it's the fact that it now does a lot of things well from casual to professional. MS Surface still feel very business-like. Thanks for sharing.

I've been using the 13-inch M4 iPad Pro with cellular as my sole work and personal computer since August, with no issues at all. In terms of my job, I'm an executive at a fintech, and everything we do productivity-wise is Office 365 based. All the MS apps have been working great, with no real issues. Stage Manager and the Magic Keyboard are the key really, without those and an external monitor it would be much trickier to juggle everything, though the iPad would still be able to do it. I definitely wouldn't want to go back to a traditional laptop setup.

I’ve used the iPad Pro M1 11” since 2018 for 90% of my computer use and I love it. When the M4 11” came out I bought one to replace the M1 and now I love it even more. I have the pencil and Magic Keyboard (as I did before) but everything works faster and more smoothly and pleasurably than with the M1.
I have very few complaints with the iPad except for a few very annoying limitations:
You cannot just drop an MP3 file into Apple Music on iPadOS as you can on macOS.
File tagging is bad compared to macOS - there you can search for a tag but on iPadOS you have to scroll up and down the list to find the tag you want. No idea why. They are sorted alphabetically now which I don’t think used to be the case.
I can’t think of the few other things, but they are limitations that Apple could so easily add to the iPad (it’s more powerful than my M1 iMac) but haven’t 😣
Mostly my iMac is for those things and it allowed me to digitize my vinyl collection and add it all to Apple Music which could not have happened (AFAIK) on my iPad. And the new Riven isn’t on the iPad …
But my iPad Pro has been my main computer since 2018 and I don’t see that changing. It’s a remarkable piece of engineering in so many ways.

Not a whole lot more, I own the m4 and there’s real no advantage over m1 other than it being slightly faster albeit still limited by OS. I also thought they use maya for that or 3d max, and then use software like UE5 or unity which requires a powerful computer. I do animation but do it on an RTX 4090, with 64GB of ram and terabytes of storage + back up. In animation, it’s almost entirely PC based.

  • @ChaseWSanders

Word, Google Docs, Excel, Sheets…these need to get a TON better on iPad before I feel comfortable recommending them over the desktop versions. What they could do is offer a choice: do you want the “touch” version, the “desktop” version, or both when you download the app? That would go a long way for me. My iPad is 99% of the way there for my work (I’m a high school teacher), but, like you noted, Google’s apps just aren’t up to par. I have to rely on the school’s Windows laptop to do the other 1% of the work.
Also, I just would not feel comfortable writing a thesis or dissertation on the iPad. Word and Google Docs just aren’t there yet.

Nobody is creating a powerpoint slide deck on a phone, or viewing a screen share in a Teams meeting, or photo editing, or coding on a phone. If you're using your phone as your primary computing tool, you are using messaging apps, chat, social media, web browsing. iPadOS does all this just fine too. It's when Apple give you $350 keyboard, mouse support, monitor support, and an M4 chip, you think "this is more powerful than any laptop I own, and costs more, so can it do laptop things?" Many people think this is where iPadOS falls down.

I brought her a MacBook but sure never used it. My kids just playing with it. She is a very potential iPad only user. And no need to the highest end iPad. Why people keeps commenting on the price of M4 iPad Pro while there is iPad Air that can give similar power to the use cases mentioned in this video. Also the entry level iPad which is just for $330 can be enough for most people.

I think we are getting there at some point. For me, it's not there yet. But it took a huge step. For me, file management lacks ease of use, I need a fully functional terminal with homebrew, better graphic editor usability, some gaming (many devs dropped mac support lately)... and zotero support for word (or a different word processor). Since apple blocks the API in Pages and MS puts not that much energy to develop Word on iPad anymore, it will probably never replace my computer. But I when it's there, I am willed to switch.

I never understood it either. For me the only real roadblock with iPad OS is that you can’t place your windows wherever you want, they only go into a few fixed positions. I like to be able to access a desktop behind my apps and drag files to and from the desktop which means window placement is important to me. But you can put two file windows side by side and work like that.
iPad does more than 90% of the stuff I do on a Mac but I don’t expect it to be my only device.

@@mendodsoregonbackroads6632 Are you still on iPadOS 16? Because yes, on 16 Windows placement with stage manager was very limited like how you described. But with iPadOS 17 they fixed stage manager so now there is almost no grid anymore and you can basically place and size your Windows however you want. I would say that I’ve been able to do 98% of all I wanted to do with the iPad but occasionally you run into something like buying a new gadget (like my audio interface) that needs a firmware update and the only option is a Mac or PC app. The other downside I’d call out is that there’s often limited choice when it comes to Pro level software for iPad, you have to work with what’s there rather than choose from multiple options as with Mac or PC. That said I’ve got an iPad and a PC laptop and it’s the iPad that I use for everything I can.
In 2025 I do expect to have another big purchase to make but I’ve no idea whether it will be a MacBook or iPad Pro. They’ve both got the same chips but Apple insists on keeping artificial walls between them. I’m not buying 2x $1500+ devices (and no, a PC definitely does not tick all of the boxes).

I would really love to get this iPad Pro M4 but two major things I do that cannot run on iPad Pro without streaming: offline development & steam gaming. For development I could get around it but for steam games, I just have no way to get around as steam or the games themselves don’t support local steam gameplay on iPad. I know many of you use steam link or moonlight but I can’t coz whenever I have time to game, I am offline. So I am playing all these offline JPRG games like Yakuza. I am currently using OneXPlayer X1 as my only device, but obviously windows is not good in tablet at all. So hopefully one day I could play steam games locally offline on an iPad.

Not a magic keyboard, but I've bought the combotouch. Ipad with keyboard is great but my only issue is the office apps which sucks. Slides and docs on safari is manageable but still needs some adjustments. If you're a heavy user on writing(word, powerpoint) a laptop is a must

I use a pair of 12 inch Android tablets as I travel about for work. It's nice having both screens. But with Windows 10/11 I can move files around easier and it's just better/fast doing thing on a computer.

i constantly run into the issue that the files app doesn’t reliably sync with onedrive, like, some files simply do not get uploaded, or it takes several days for a photo to be synced, and sometimes I suddenly find multiple copies of the same photo with an added 1, 2, 3, tagged onto the file name. have you ever encountered that issue? that’s what kills the otherwise lovely idea of going full ipad for me, unfortunately.

Great video 👍 In Q1, I’m planning to buy a Mac Mini or completely switch to an iPad - and I’m leaning towards the iPad because I know it would be an amazing all-in-one solution for everything I need. There’s just one thing I’m curious about, and it’s very important to me, but I only know how to do it on a computer: adding my personal MP3 music files to the Apple Music library. I’ve always done this on my MacBook, where I created my own custom folders and had them permanently in my library.
Is it possible to do this on an iPad? If so, can you explain or show how? Thanks! 🙏

I also try MacOS, but it’s boring and I don’t have an idea for what I need a Mac, so I sell my Mac mini. Cause everything I need - my m1 iPad can do

Sure, it's a computer. And given the accessories they try and sell you, you'd have thought that Apple also thought it was a laptop.
iPadOS just isn't up for the task for anything heavier than Word processing and video watching. It has so much power, but a touch screen is horrible for any creative work that isn't pen-related.
Sure, I could edit video on an tablet, but it's a worse user experience than a laptop.
Sure, I could make music on an iPad, but it has one port and no 3.5mm jack for latency free audio, so now I need a dongle for the most basic of 'Pro' needs. Also the 'Pro' apps are now a subscription, at least Logic and Final Cut are...
Sure, iPadOS has a files app, but it pales in comparison to any desktop OS file manager.
It is basically a laptop now, but with a bad OS for its intended use-case. It has a top-heavy design so it can't really be used as easily on a lap, and it has a lot less IO than a traditional laptop.
It is a computer, but it is very limited in its usability and the only reason I see to get one over a laptop for work is to make RUclips videos about how you only use an iPad for work.

@@shameermulji They're great content consumption and drawing machines and for office tasks they are... fine.
For anything more you are making plenty of sacrifices that you should (and wouldn't) have to make if you just buy a reasonable laptop.
      - only one port
      - Apple 'pro' apps are a subscription, rather than just a one time purchase
      - worse experience on a lap
      - significantly worse desktop experience
      - drastically worse file management system
      - most app equivalents have fewer features compared to desktop counterparts
      - iPad Pro with keyboard is still more expensive than a Macbook
      - can't run any other operating systems
      - laptop cursor much more precise than
Now, not everybody needs all of that, but I think far more people would notice than wouldn't if they tried the same workload between a tablet and a laptop for there everyday work.

Try using a Macro on Excel.. the one available on iPad is a very simplified version of the application. Any advanced stuff is not available. Interesting video because this iPad standalone can work, but it is a very specific workflow, it is a very limited device. For future proofing (who knows exactly what one will need regarding software tomorrow) a full laptop is just safer. I believe that the iPad is still a tablet first (the best), can do a bit of laptop work, while the Surface pro is a laptop first, but can do a bit of a tablet too.

I think it depends on your duties and tasks. I mean, for marketing and design, for example, Adobe is much more limited and it is a big negative point. I firmly believe the ipad could have been replaced macbook lineup since Apple Silicon was launched. However, from my point of view they do not do so because of the profits of having a macbook and ipad combo (in many cases having the obligation to complement the ipad with a mac) are huge.

I'm turning 50 this year and have been a tech freak (and dad) since the Commodore 64 came out and then from around Windows 95 times.
I never really understood tablets as a segment. I have used my Android phones for pretty much everything, especially since they have been able to handle literally everything - from file handling to working with Word or Excel. For any other occasion I have reached out to my 15" laptops. So I never could really squeeze a tablet or an iPad in here. Now, watching your video and having smart keyboards around I still have a dilemma: for the price of an iPad Air M2 AND a smar keyboard you can just get a MacBook Air - so again, I'm not sure I need an iPad.

the real issue with the ipad is the lack of a desktop class browser and an alternative to safari. It doesnt happen often, but it happens, that a website hiccups or flat out doesnt work properly and a laptop needs to be used and or non-safari used.
the rest of it, file manager, blah blah is nonsense. it needs alt browser engines

Power point doesnt allow you to incorporate video,. Be mindful of these limitations when going down this path. Oh, and definitely don’t take for granted the ease of simply dragging and dropping files, images etc into emails etc.
