Finally a content creator that truly uses an iPad Pro for work and not just for video editing. Thanks for your honest reviews! I pretty much gave up on working only from an iPad. But I still love using it
You're a savage - there are a lot of RUclipsrs who talk about using the iPad only, but you're the first thats shown me it's possible as a project manager and running a design agency.
Finally somebody that doesnt complain about file management. I am also an iPadOS user and when other youtubers said in their iPad review that the iPad is bad at file management I never understood what they mean. Like its a freaking file manager, you can move, copy, paste and rename files and folders, can connect usb drives and network drives and you can sign in to cloud storage apps that also shiw up in files exactly like on Mac or Windows what do these people need more than this?
Finally, someone else saying what I’ve been saying for a long time. I switched back in 2018 and haven’t looked back, ever. It was a learning curve at first, then work around after work around. But now with new iPadOS everything is coming together and it’s great. Great video and thanks!!
Excel and Word apps nowhere near where they need to be to replace desktop versions. Excel, no pivot tables. Word, can’t define styles (Title, Heading 1, Heading 2, etc) Web apps slightly better, but laggy. These are normal user, not pro features. Been following your experience on this, maybe a deep dive on this. Anyway, keep it up!
i upgraded from 11” m1 to 13” M4, and I love my m4 iPad pro, using it for heavy gaming, digital art on procreate, and watching movies and note taking in college, and the battery life is amazing and lasts a day with 80% limit! I use it with a removable magnetic ESR paper-feel screen protector and nillkin bumper case. The iPad OS is so smooth and easy to use as always, and when i see so many youtubers like MKBHD who say this is a waist of money only ‘cause it doesn’t run MAC OS, well, files app sure need more upgrades but i say things don’t exactly work that way! the whole point of iPad is to make you do the things you used to do on computer the easier way on iPad, it it run a desktop os completely it’s the same thing again, and we already have Microsoft surfaces for years but why they don’t get much attention while they run windows all the time? Even now that surfaces are switched to ARM and have more power and efficiency? The point is iPad actually is good the way it is, and youtubers or people arguing about lack of proper software on iPads may see the story from a not so right aspect.
My dream is to only live with an iPad. Although I love my Mac, I absolutely adore the iPad concept. I have an iPad Pro M1 11”, and I’m wondering into upgrading into an M4, but I don’t see the real need… yet. I’m a software developer, and that’s the biggest no-no in the iPad usage. I’m constantly looking for ways to develop using native apps (like Swift Playgrounds) or connecting through SSH to a Raspberry Pi, where I have all the needs to code freely. I’m still experimenting, so I haven’t made the jump to an iPad only life. I think it’s far from now, because making apps for another Apple platforms (macOS, tvOS, watchOS and visionOS) can’t be done without a Mac. But I’m still hoping, because I really enjoy using my iPad.
As a software engineer, don’t think will be ever possible to switch to a ipad. Unless you only do web, and that still uses a lot of services, dockers etc. I tried the ipad route as well and it worked when I had to do aws stuff, but unless they close the gap between mac os and ipad os sadly it won’t be feasible
iPad is my main computer since 2020 and it’s absolutely perfect device. When I start use iPad Pro as a main computing device in 2020 it was little bit difficult, cause a lot of functions doesn’t work on iPad, but now in 2024 - I haven’t functions or tasks that I can’t to do on my iPad. I also try MacOS, but it’s boring and I don’t have an idea for what I need a Mac, so I sell my Mac mini. Cause everything I need - my m1 iPad can do
Word, Google Docs, Excel, Sheets…these need to get a TON better on iPad before I feel comfortable recommending them over the desktop versions. What they could do is offer a choice: do you want the “touch” version, the “desktop” version, or both when you download the app? That would go a long way for me. My iPad is 99% of the way there for my work (I’m a high school teacher), but, like you noted, Google’s apps just aren’t up to par. I have to rely on the school’s Windows laptop to do the other 1% of the work. Also, I just would not feel comfortable writing a thesis or dissertation on the iPad. Word and Google Docs just aren’t there yet.
The web version is coming close. You could try that out. Why anybody would say that the ipad apps come close to their desktop counterparts is beyond mel
My iPad Pro has been my main computer for the last three years. I learned the iPad version of familiar apps and I can do everything I did on my Macbook Pro 15. A very thin laptop with a touch screen!
I’ve been using the iPad Pro as a sole device for years now for both coaching and teaching. I couldn’t go back to using PC’s now. Great to see content that isn’t just using the iPad for video editing. You’ve just gained one more subscriber 👍
I’ve used the iPad Pro M1 11” since 2018 for 90% of my computer use and I love it. When the M4 11” came out I bought one to replace the M1 and now I love it even more. I have the pencil and Magic Keyboard (as I did before) but everything works faster and more smoothly and pleasurably than with the M1. I have very few complaints with the iPad except for a few very annoying limitations: You cannot just drop an MP3 file into Apple Music on iPadOS as you can on macOS. File tagging is bad compared to macOS - there you can search for a tag but on iPadOS you have to scroll up and down the list to find the tag you want. No idea why. They are sorted alphabetically now which I don’t think used to be the case. I can’t think of the few other things, but they are limitations that Apple could so easily add to the iPad (it’s more powerful than my M1 iMac) but haven’t 😣 Mostly my iMac is for those things and it allowed me to digitize my vinyl collection and add it all to Apple Music which could not have happened (AFAIK) on my iPad. And the new Riven isn’t on the iPad … But my iPad Pro has been my main computer since 2018 and I don’t see that changing. It’s a remarkable piece of engineering in so many ways.
Here's what I don't understand, many people use their phone as a primary computing tool. Hell, I know people who do not have another computing device, just their phone. And yet, I always hear from RUclipsrs about the limitations of iPadOS, which is similar if not the same as the iPhone. Thanks for the video.
I went iPad only about 4 months ago and have had almost no regrets. We’re a Google Workspace shop with Zoom. Chrome and Sheets, Slides mobile apps suck pretty much. I find myself using the Safari browser for those activities. I love the versatility of the device vs the MBP. Plus as a traveler it’s light and I don’t have to put it away on planes. The use cases get better every year. I still consider it a computer, just a next gen model.
Sure, it's a computer. And given the accessories they try and sell you, you'd have thought that Apple also thought it was a laptop. iPadOS just isn't up for the task for anything heavier than Word processing and video watching. It has so much power, but a touch screen is horrible for any creative work that isn't pen-related. Sure, I could edit video on an tablet, but it's a worse user experience than a laptop. Sure, I could make music on an iPad, but it has one port and no 3.5mm jack for latency free audio, so now I need a dongle for the most basic of 'Pro' needs. Also the 'Pro' apps are now a subscription, at least Logic and Final Cut are... Sure, iPadOS has a files app, but it pales in comparison to any desktop OS file manager. It is basically a laptop now, but with a bad OS for its intended use-case. It has a top-heavy design so it can't really be used as easily on a lap, and it has a lot less IO than a traditional laptop. It is a computer, but it is very limited in its usability and the only reason I see to get one over a laptop for work is to make RUclips videos about how you only use an iPad for work.
I think it depends on your duties and tasks. I mean, for marketing and design, for example, Adobe is much more limited and it is a big negative point. I firmly believe the ipad could have been replaced macbook lineup since Apple Silicon was launched. However, from my point of view they do not do so because of the profits of having a macbook and ipad combo (in many cases having the obligation to complement the ipad with a mac) are huge.
I’m sure you can setup automations for any apps that you want certain functionalities turned off. For example - when in excel, an automation will run that disables trackpad swipe to undo or go back, etc etc.
I have been using the iPad Pro 13 inch M4 ever since it was released and basically it has replaced my laptop. Everything about it is perfect especially the cellular data on mine
I’m pulling the trigger on the apple studio display, Best Buy has them on sale for $1299 , I’m in the same boat using the m4 iPad Pro as my main device.
Nice insights in the video, I'm def sold on my ipad order, thinking of getting the ESR shift magnetic ipad case since I dont need a keyboard, any thoughts on that?
the real issue with the ipad is the lack of a desktop class browser and an alternative to safari. It doesnt happen often, but it happens, that a website hiccups or flat out doesnt work properly and a laptop needs to be used and or non-safari used. the rest of it, file manager, blah blah is nonsense. it needs alt browser engines
Great video 👍 In Q1, I’m planning to buy a Mac Mini or completely switch to an iPad - and I’m leaning towards the iPad because I know it would be an amazing all-in-one solution for everything I need. There’s just one thing I’m curious about, and it’s very important to me, but I only know how to do it on a computer: adding my personal MP3 music files to the Apple Music library. I’ve always done this on my MacBook, where I created my own custom folders and had them permanently in my library. Is it possible to do this on an iPad? If so, can you explain or show how? Thanks! 🙏
I sold my ipad M4 mainly because of low PWM it causes headache and fatigue…feew week ago i always feel lethargic then i saw a video that oled with pwm causes fatigue..ended up buying an ipad mini 7 instead reviewers should tackle this issue
I'm looking forward to the day I can do this. For now though, I still like to use software that isn't available in the App Store and I have a variety of peripherals attached to my Mac that won't work with the iPad.
I have maybe managed to fulfill 80% of my needs with the iPad Pro instead of using my 2013 MBP. Often I feel like it's a lot slower to work with iOS, than a desktop OS. In many cases it's possible to do kind of the same thing, but with iOS I can't be as fast or precise as with MacOS. On the other hand the pen is just a bonus for me - not a crucial tool. If you have to write/draw a lot, then the iPad wins. I miss some specific apps like QLab and for example typography and layout of making a poster is painful (at least in Affinity) compared to its desktop counterpart.
Nice video. My iPad Pro M4 with the new Magic Keyboard is my daily driver. When I need a Mac or Windows system I remote into one using Jump Desktop. (There are a few business apps that I need such as H&R Block Tax software for business. I sometimes need the desktop version of the MS Office for macros / VB and pivot tables, plus I need a desktop version of Quickbooks). Maybe I missed it but what size iPad are you using - the 11” or 13”? I use the 13”. For me, when iPad OS added trackpad / mouse support and decent windowing and Jump Desktop became super smooth and fluid, I knew I could make a the switch. (Liked and Subscribed - Happy Thanksgiving too).
It's great it works for you, but I thin ka lot of people will just get stuck on the fact the iPad doesn't even support 3rd party browsers properly. You can't use extensions on Chrome/Edge/Firefox, you can't even use Google apps properly, like Sheets, without being pushed to an extremely lightweight version or the App which is awful. Citrix is poor, so if you are NOT a RUclips creator (why do all RUclipsrs assume their entire audience are more RUclipsrs?) then you can't work reliably with remote desktop environments... so likely 80% of people who work from home in a secure environment, can't use an iPad. I love my iPad and had the same dream as you, that it would one day become the all-in-one device. It's amazing it can do some very high end tasks like playing complex games, video editing, audio mixing and composing... but using a google sheet with javascript? No can do. Use a Firefox extension, nope. Dual-screen citrix connection? No. The list goes on.
Hi TD! I recently ordered a new M4 Ipad pro, keyboard, and pro pencil since I am about to start college (mechanical engineering). I am hoping to use this device for the next 2 years (hopefully more!). And when the MacBook Pro with this OLED screen comes out hoping by 2026, I would be adding it to my arsenal. Do you have any recommendations or heads up for someone in my journey?
I think you have selected an excellent device for college! You might pick up an external display for that dorm room set up (if you’re doing the dorms that is). Enjoy that new iPad and good luck in school!
I’ve been using only the ipad to do all my work… but this year I had the need to buy the new MacBook Pro M4… I was fed up of th ipadOS limitations… Also, Davinci Resolve iPad version started to become short to my needs, even on the studio version.
I’m on week 2, and it’s going slowly. Complicating the slowness is I’m moving over from PC world. iPad OS is great. I’m not a big fan of the version of excel for iPad OS, but all MS Apps work just fine. Switching between apps and left right window parking I’m still struggling with a bit.
Excel and Power Point for iPadOS are desktop level? What kind of projects do you do? Buying groceries in a store? 😂 Thanks for your channel and the videos, I clicked thumbs-up for you, but MS Office applications for iPad is so terrible that you better not use them at all and switch to web versions.
Hey man im a special inspector and I’ve been using my m4 iPad for everything from using excel to having all my plans for each project in GoodNotes , signatures and everything I need is great I put my iPad in my vest pocket in the back when I’m in the field and attach the Magic Keyboard when it’s time to do some report writing. I have the base m4 11” I used to have the 12.9 m1 but the portability sold me. I love it can I ask do you have the 16gb or the 8gb ? I have the 8gb and was wondering if 16gb would be more worth it just wondering what you use ?
So does the Studio Display give any black bars when cloud gaming like Nvidia’s GeForce Now or the new Xbox Cloud Gaming. I have a current display and the resolution look terrible and it just doesn’t look good. This is the reason why I can just have an iPad. I would love to get it cause I could get rid of my noisy gaming rig. Great video by the way. I have the M4 iPad Pro and it is awesome. :)
That's fine but if you need to use specific software as I do for web site development and publishing, QuarkXpress etc then the iPad only is not viable.
What does the battery percentage look like? I would like to use the iPad with an external monitor more, but I am afraid of overheating and too much battery degradaction.
I disagree about Office on iPad. Word is lazily programmed. I’m still trying to figure out on what rules pictures work on that Word - they just stick wherever they want. You can’t use bookmarks, you can’t even see where bookmarks are. On Excel, keyboard seems to work whenever it feels like. I couldn’t. Web versions work better on iPad.
I use my iPad as most as I can. But I don’t use it as my main device just because of some platforms I use at work, mas for 90% of my life iPad is perfect
I wish I could use Apple Notes. On my M2 iPad Pro it is laggy as all hell. Especially if I try to add typed text to the handwritten section(s). So I am using floundering going back and forth between Obsidian and OneNote.
I love my ipad Pro 2020 11inch, I'm looking to upgrade. But I'll be skipping the M4, hoping the M5 has thunderbolt 5 port.. I really want 2x type c ports.
Great video. Thanks. I went with the 13 iPad Pro 2TB. I’m hoping it will work without lag or overheating for my usage. I will use it daily for E-Mail, RUclips and some light porn on the weekends.
MS Apps are are excellent !! i did disagree sir especially excel is ok at best (no where desktop level) --- on another note i would LOVE if safari/any bowser could really be usable with addon's the same as on desktop version
If you wanna play, Warcraft classic pick up the base model, M4, Mac mini and connected to your studio display. It’s the best computer I’ve ever bought for 600$
Omg I disagree on so many stuff I can’t even begin to list them. You are doing yourself a disservice by using an iPad as your computer. Saying that MS office is desktop level on the iPad is all I needed to understand that your view is not realistic.
Ive been m4 pro only user since it came out. The only problem I have run into that I cannot find a workaround is I have a read only PowerPoint presentation that I need to use that has a video embedded in it. I’ve been unable to find a way to play this video.
Hey Tech Dad - fellow project manager and aspiring content creator here! I’ve been following your iPad vids and they have been great! I just noticed you hit 1k subs! Congratulations!! I know the effort it takes to get that first milestone (I’m on the journey myself!!) I’m subbed and looking forward to whats coming in the future! All the best!!
It’s clear that you have a very non-technical need. Excel certainly isn’t at the desktop level. One cannot even format an external disk. One cannot use python scripts etc. One cannot use a lot of hardware. Programs are very limited by the system. A lot of programs aren’t available (like on Windows or Mac). It’s only doable to use only an iPad if one has a very basic need.
Excel is nowhere near desktop level on iPad it’s even worse than the browser version. It’s my dream to iPad only as it’s a treat to use but excel is holding me back as well as poor browser can’t inspect elements for scraping and coding very limited. I am still waiting for the day I can go iPad only, for creatives it’s pretty much there but devs or data analysts are nowhere near catered for yet sadly. Like the content though
I don't think Excel on iPad will ever reach feature parity with its desktop version. The iPad is not the right device for Excel. Like you mentioned, it's a great device for creative professionals, not productivity professionals (note taking being the exception).
It’s a clickbait headline “200 days. No computer” - so cheap. Say what you mean. “200 days. No computer running a desktop OS”. The subheading is correct. But we see this silly comment still even 14 years after iPad was released! OK. Repeat after me 200 times: An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer. An iPad is a computer…
"Happy Thanksgiving! Today is a great day to reflect on all we’re thankful for, but the greatest gift we could ever receive is from God Himself-His Son, Jesus. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we can be forgiven for our sins and have a relationship with God that lasts forever. This gift is for anyone who turns from their sin and believes in Jesus. I pray you’ll consider His love for you today. Wishing you a joyful and meaningful Thanksgiving!"

Wow, your RUclips video is full 2160p60 in gorgeous HDR on my tablet ... awesome experience !! Thanks
I would never use 100% iPad Pro, but I adore my iPad Pro M4 experience the most out of anything hands down! Love that device more than anything tech.
Great video. Just subscribed to the channel. Looking forward to future videos.

I am a PM as well, but at work I have to use a Windows laptop, but I love the iPad as my personal laptop. Wishing you all the best!

True, there’s no terminal for iPad, and especially for developing for other platforms. You need a computer to run a VM
@@supak00pa82 Exactly this. The OS is so closed that this what happens, and there’s not much freedom. But I still like the general experience.

Love the video. But I wish people would stop saying the iPad Pro is not a computer. It IS a computer. It just has a different operating system.
100% This. Too many come at the iPad from a PC and Mac perspective.

Loved the video! What is the monitor you use at 0:35 ? 😊
I use the Apple Studio display but I used to use the LG ultrafine 24 inch. I love the studio display!

I'm looking forward to the day I can do this. For now though, I still like to use software that isn't available in the App Store and I have a variety of peripherals attached to my Mac that won't work with the iPad.
you can turn off the swiping gesture to go back in the settings. i have it turned off on my mac for the same reason.
iPad Air 4th gen has been my main computer for 4 years
I have maybe managed to fulfill 80% of my needs with the iPad Pro instead of using my 2013 MBP.
Got the 2024 iPad Pro 17” M4 and use it as my only computer. It IS my only computer. It is a different experience.
Hello, did you think about e ink display tablets like Amazon Kindle Scribe? I’m working with both devices to learn&work my PhD lessons. Cheers..
i haven’t used an amazon tablet for years. wasn’t impressed years ago but that doesn’t mean they aren’t good now.
I have been iPad Pro only for over 2 years now.
Great job!
Thank you!
@Techdad650 thank you!! Happy Thanksgiving TD!
Thanks for your channel and the videos, I clicked thumbs-up for you, but MS Office applications for iPad is so terrible that you better not use them at all and switch to web versions.
11 Zoll or 13 Zoll for you the same or would you prefer / recommend the one over the other ?
Can you suggest an app for a replacement to Adobe Dreamweaver? I need a full HTML editor.
nope no black bars. it looks amazing on the studio display! thank you for watching!
That's fine but if you need to use specific software as I do for web site development and publishing, QuarkXpress etc then the iPad only is not viable.
Can you share how your battery health and cycle counts doing?
Agree! Keep it up!
MS Apps are are excellent !! i did disagree sir
especially excel is ok at best (no where desktop level)
---
on another note
i would LOVE if safari/any bowser could really be usable with addon's the same as on desktop version
If you wanna play, Warcraft classic pick up the base model, M4, Mac mini and connected to your studio display. It’s the best computer I’ve ever bought for 600$
I’m considering that!
My biggest problem is you can’t add music to the iPad without syncing to a computer so it’s a no go for me
IPad is a fun toy but for stuff like spreadsheets , forget it .
Omg I disagree on so many stuff I can’t even begin to list them. You are doing yourself a disservice by using an iPad as your computer.
Saying that MS office is desktop level on the iPad is all I needed to understand that your view is not realistic.
What is your battery health? Nice video
battery health is at “normal”
Good video! :)
Ive been m4 pro only user since it came out. The only problem I have run into that I cannot find a workaround is I have a read only PowerPoint presentation that I need to use that has a video embedded in it. I’ve been unable to find a way to play this video.
Not even PowerPoint via edge browser?
No, i tried, edge and google. I even have office 365 account but will play everything but the video
whats a computer?
Dk why other youtubers assume that all the buyers have 10 jobs in diff fields , like common man .
I've doing this for years right now, since m1 iPad. It's a beautiful tragedy!
Thank you sir! good luck on this RUclips journey and thank you for subbing!
How is screen sharing with zoom?
screen sharing with zoom works but only on the iPad screen. can’t share the external display. other than that its great!
The speakers suck, but it otherwise is a nice device.
V Lookup on 2 sheets is not possible
❤
Agree! I find it very laggy when scrolling even a basic spreadsheet and it drives me bad so I just give up
I really wanted to make the jump from macOS, but I don't believe it's an established ecosystem for programmers
Mac over 5 years old? It would have easily gone 5 more🤨
It’s a clickbait headline “200 days.
… And having watched your video, you are far better than the headline! Well done and I will check out your other videos. 👍
glad you enjoyed the content if not the thumbnail 😄 thank you for watching!
