I have a 17MY Outback 2.5l which I think is the same as yours. I love how Subaru places the oil filter on top which makes it extremely easy to access! I’m able to shimmy under enough to drain the oil without using my ramps, due to the added ground clearance. My Outback came with a 14mm drain bolt however, Subaru recently published a Technical Service Bulletin recommending replacing it with a new design 17mm drain bolt to prevent the corners from rounding off! I plan to replace mine at the next oil change!
I’m disabled so I take our Subie’s to our mechanic who works exclusively on Subaru’s. So anyone in the Wenatchee Valley area of north central WA state, take your Subie to H&D Auto in Wenatchee
Great tip, thank you for sharing. I don’t live too far from you, I live about 45 min south of Moses Lake. Glad you found a good mechanic, not too many of those around anymore!
@@benchamberlain5985 So you live 40 miles south of “Moses” LOL. H&D does EVERYTHING for Subaru maintenance and repairs. They’re good people. Most of his business is done because our local Subaru dealership has left a foul taste in their mouths, (including us). His rates are fair (lower than the dealership) and does Excellent Service and Repairs.
@@benchamberlain5985I’m actually rewatching the video and heard what you said and I completely agree. I shouldn’t have commented so quickly. I just got a Fram ultra synthetic xg7317. It’s 20000 miles and either 25 or 30 microns. I read that over 160,000 miles you should switch to smaller micron size. Fram is generally bad but this filter is good. Also you are brave for 10,000 miles!
Addition for others doing this.. pull the dipstick, oil cap, or filter first to vent the oil pan while it’s draining
Thank you for sharing 👍
Thank you so much! I spent so much time on research but wish I came across this video before. Would have saved tonnes of time.
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you found my video useful 😃

Did you replace? This is a great idea!
First to watch. Thanks nice complete diy. You should buy some car ramps.
Thanks! Car ramps always stress me out, always afraid of going up and over 😂
@@benchamberlain5985referencing the oil filter…the Subaru OEM filter is made by Fram. FYI.
@@benchamberlain5985I have a ‘17 Honda Civic, and their OEM filter is also a Fram. Personally I’ve never had a problem with Fram filters.

@@Doc1855 Good to know, if I need anything done I’ll bring it up 😉
@@benchamberlain5985 Yeah, it’s hard to break a Subie. 👍
Subaru recommends oil changes at 7k miles. Going 10k miles is a long time between changes.
I think the Mobil 1 is good for 10k
I personally would never change my oil every 10,000 miles, I change my oil every 5,000 miles.
Lol you buy expensive oil and then a cheap filter, you should do the opposite
You could be right but I’ve watched some guys cut open the Walmart filters and they are built well inside.
