What a classy individual. Seems to have a great sense of humor and a great intellect.
Yes quite a musician
It's all a show for the most part. No depth to it. Plant was, is and always has had an ego that didn't match his musical abilities. The only moment of the "real" Robert Plant was around 20:30, when JJ talked about Bonham. The rest, pure meaningless word salad. Plant would've flamed out of music had Page not hired him. Whereas Page, Baldwin and Bonham would've landed somewhere else. Plant has been forever trying to elevate his status musically, which I've seen it as insecurity and need to forever "prove" himself. Which, of course he can't do. He's not got the chops.
So charming....witty....funny....fascinating man.......still is almost 40 long years later.
A pompous insecure man who hides behind charm to mask his insecurities. The "public" Robert Plant is not who the guy is behind the scenes. 100%. Too many only see the surface with that guy.
What a delight Robert is. So charming. No wonder women were mad for him. And still are!
This is one of my favorite interviews with Robert here. He really has something special about him. He's kind, warm, funny, well spoken, intelligent, has a glint in his eye at times. Good lord I am grateful to never have met this man, only because he's mesmerizing in every way. Just a beautiful man inside and out. Le sigh 😉💕
Last 5 mins priceless.
"You'll never look at me the same way again." "That's for sure" quips the girl!
Explaining the honey dripperz.. 👍
Very charming & adorable man. So much charisma
There is just nobody like Robert Plant ♥♥♥
JJ Jackson was a wonderful, gracious interviewer. Much respect.
Agreed. He was the class of MTV VJs (as good as the original 5 were) and his interviewing style was amazing.
They had history, too, as JJ introduced zep at one of the 77 LA Forum dates. It's great tae watch as Robert's obviously very relaxed with him. Intelligent questions rather than the normal dumb fare churned out by interviewers.
He’s adorable. So precious.
I love his smile! 🙂
JJ had history with Led Zeppelin going back to 1969 when he was a DJ at WBCN.
i only came to the comments section to find out if anyone said anything that matters and you said the perfect thing
Plus he was hands down the best interviewer that MTV had. I was wowed by his interview with Public Image Limited that perfectly captured a normally reticent John Lydon & his partner (at the time) Keith Levene in an extremely intelligent conversation.
@@cjo2012 just looked up the original MTV VJs and I knew JJ had passed a while back so I was reading a little bit about his life and it said he was instrumental in getting Zeppelin played in the States
Gives this interview that I saw when it aired a whole new meaning !!
@@ronbo11 JJ was great he was Zep's biggest fan ... If u listen to agree interviews JJ did with Zep he would change his voice he would sound British esp talking with anyone in Zep. 🤘🏼
JJ Jackson was the greatest
The saddest on his face when Bonzo's death is mentioned showed how the emotion of his loss was all still very raw nearly 2 years on.
I agree about when JJ mentions replacing Bonzo to keep the band going..Robert was smiling until that second and that smile disappeared quickly just like flipping a lightswitch on and JJ had to notice because you could see it and it's 2024 and Robert will still do this about doing a Led Zeppelin reunion..Robert and Bonzo were best buds so it's not surprising..Robert can sing anything he wants to even now but he has nothing to prove to anyone..I would love to see him sing live but I won't even mention it to him...maybe I'll see him this time while he's touring the US..
@@brendanewland6636 How true. I saw him 3 weeks ago in Blackburn with his Saving Grace band. It was absolutely brilliant Brendan. If he tours the US with that band. You have to go and see them. It's probably the best gig of his I've attended.
Awesome stuff. Remember seeing some of it when it came out. The discussion about Bonham is moving. 20:37. One of the reasons why Plant will be the all-time greatest in terms of integrity as an artist. Right there with the Beatles. Never wanted to do "re-dos" and imitations of the past. Ultimate respect. Only ever wanted to go forward and take chances.
That's not entirely true. He's been reshaping Zeppelin tracks and living off those since Page/Plant. Taking those Zep tracks and ripping the soul of them and making them bad reheated leftovers is more of the reality. Nice try at carrying water for him though. Plant's originality ended with Fate of Nations, for better or worse.
Get out of here. Plant has proven to be quite hypocritical.
14 years old. We had tickets for the Detroit show Both of our parents told us we were not going. Took my girl and ran away from home . John had passed shortly after .I cried like a baby . I still don't or ever will regret leaving home in flint . Afterall we had tickets for in through the out door. DETROIT . Still the greatest time of my life . I will always cherish !!!!
Wow so human such salt and humility. love him! ❤️🎼. Mark Z 🙏!
The interviewer does a good job.
Robert, cool as ever
He was the only good vj back then
Honest and more charisma than any other bands together...
His open mind served him well...his best quality.....probably why he is unique!!
I appreciate his humility.
I've lived him forever!
Спасибо, Роберт!!!
Именно непредвзятость!
22:10 "I just lost my mate" Love this...
Out of all the interview's I've seen from plant, this is the most honest and standing one to date.
Yes, this was before his defensive ego took over. After Bonzo's death Plant had navigate the music industry on his own ship. Here he's taking cautious steps forward. Later, his ego got puffed up a bit too much especially from 1988-1995 as dissolved into self parody and became creatively bankrupt. His muse was better served without the rampant ego and musicians who grounded him instead of changing them out every 2 years. I still say Robbie Blunt was GOOD for Plant. Balanced out his songwriting and anchored it compared to lame later ditties like "Tie Dye On The Highway."
What an awesome interview. Two gentlemen who are and were complete class acts in their respective careers.
MIND BLOWING - 37 years ago I. was a freshman / Soph in High School . MTV was still new , barely a year and Here Robert is 33/34 ( August 1948) MORE than 1/2 his life time and my ago .. THANK YOU MARK !!
41 years later still as popular as ever....
I love his sense of humor:))
He's wonderful
Greatest voice in rock and roll ...ever. More like a humble god really. I am always in awe.
It was a privilege to have been in time and space when Led Zep began with a particular and unique music that no one had ever heard before! Boy! did we rock!
Love you Robert. ❤
OH HOW I LOVE THIS MAN LET ME COUNT THE WAYS ✊🏾
Mark Zep, thanks for the compilation of this treasure trove of yours...
He’s always wearing the coolest footwear 🙃😍
Listening to Robert Plant talk is compelling. Watching River Plant listen is hypnotic.
A beautiful human being...to this day!
You see, there comes a time where no matter the price rewarded, you say "no" as Robert did for the reason that should be evident, you cannot replace your "mate", ylur "friend" who is like family, like a brother you love!
Robert's best friend..JJ pushed that answer from him..To me that's wrong in this interview because JJ know Robert doesn't want to replace bonzo..Robert is nice and even tries to change the subject..poor taste and back in the day JJ did excellent interviews just not here..RIP JJ...
HIs interviews endear people to him. He is fun and funny and a free spirit.
Robert Plant is a very stand up guy here!! Thank you! " In between last time we came and this time..we managed to get an album out called Houses of the Holy ( applause) and we decided to call this title..The Song Remains the same " Robert Plant
Dave Whalen love your sense of humour me being 1/2 UK myself love everything about him intellectual, great singer even now 2019) I'm so in love have been since 14! Saw Zep in 1979 in the U.K. the summer of love Knebworth time of my life............Would watch MTV as live in Canada & 1/2 Canadian) & recall many of these vids
This hair as opposed to long hair ( ❤️❤️❤️) it
So sexy long hair
Had Pictures @ 11 great album
@@tiffanyroseangeles7517 Hey love, you are a bigger fan than me:-) I only got to see Jimmy along with Jason with the Outrider band but still a phenomenal show and Jimmy did use his bow in a pyramid of lights and it's true I did act as Jason's personal bodyguard undercover in the town where I live and yes I do love your blonde curly hair and makeup. You don't look at all like plant to me but are a hot babe 😉 whom I'd like to court around the world ❤️😉
It still amazes me after all these years this man has smoked cigarettes and weed never has had cancer. He literally can't stop clearing his throat everytime he talks.
@@Taylor.Dude. He says he finally quit smoking in around 1987. He drinks beer every once in a while but of course all that damage he did to his voice was from cigarettes, weed, cocaine and liquor.
I love him❤💋...
Hadn't seen this before. very interesting as to where his headspace was at the time. Glad that he eventually began to play Zeppelin material again if for nothing else, but coming to terms with his legacy. At this point, it must have been an impossible hill to climb to try and leave his past behind and forge something new. Glad he had the integrity and the guts to stay the course. It served him well and continues to do so.
Love Robert Plant !!
ROBERT PLANT FOREVER! LONG LIVE ROBERT PLANT!
The Original Golden God .... wracked with nerves and doubts about his first solo album
Fantastic unedited time-capsule! Interestingly enough, many things of this interview came to pass as future productions: plenty of videos for Plant, he toured just a year later in support of his 2nd solo album: 'The Principle of Moments' - guess he had enough songs then! The Honeydrippers - would later blow-up with Beck, Page and Setzer, The Stray Cats went big (Brian Setzer would eventually join the live Honeydrippers), Jason Bonham would eventually play for the much-later Led Zeppelin reunion.
René Peraza Brian Setzer
Of course, It's Brian... I'll be edting... thanks!
Great vid...thanks a million!😎🎸🥁🎶
Lmao are u kidding me this is pure gold !!!!!!!!!! Especially after they finished the interview and they started Messing around with him..
Great full length interview and they didn't keep having to break away for commercials.

Robert !
@22:10 you can see his demeanor change when JJ keeps asking about John's death. They were so close:(
If I were Robert, I would've gotten up and walked out no matter if he was friends with J.J. or not. At that time in his life and career, he just went through five years of absolute pain, illness and tragedy from a car wreck that almost killed him and his wife, lost his son when he was away in America with the band and then losing his personal life long best friend Bonham. All that has and will put an eternal physiological affect on anyone no matter who they are and what they do in their lives.
Absolute GOLD - loved it !!
NO......I just lost my Mate......what a GREAT Human Being !!
Miss you, Mr. JJ Jackson! GB
Nice to see some new stuff! Thank you!
Robert oozes charisma.
Awesome to see some the Lemon God from time to time
excellent! thx for sharing Mark!
R.I.P J.J Jackson..
Surprising they discuss All of My Love being a favorite of RP's with no reference to Robert Plant's son Karac who died at 5 years old (1977)and the song was written for. It was obvious on Robert's face like he expected the question but it never came.
I noticed the look on his face too, but that song had already been out for 5 years or so and it seemed pointless for JJ to bring it up knowing how many times Robert has probably talked about it. Robert was probably relieved if anything?
I thought the same thing Joan after looking at Robert's face...Bonzo and his wife was there to help out Robert and Maureen after they lost their son...Bonzo was the only member from the band that was at the funeral to support them..."All of my Love" is my favorite really because it's the 1st song I heard coming out of a window and I was 12 years old...my friend Dawn was playing it and I heard Robert's voice...it was later on before I learned why that song was written...very sad...My parents have lost 2 kids..sad...I'm glad Robert is still singing and he's able to...take care Joan,Brenda
Amazing
Robert Plant you're still relevant in 2023! I fucking admire your entirety. To bad the entertainment ppl really know how to shut down a good thing..
The end of this interview has proven the total lapse in our society today, started 30+ years ago - if only they would have seen the demise of global humanistic integrity.
The most real interview I've ever seen, yet somehow the business finds a way to shade the realism of information and authenticity with the bullshit they ask him to sit through at the end.
What a GREAT Video!!!!
Aside from the interviews he does with Jimmy Page, this one is one of my favorites. Maybe because JJ has known him awhile and knows what questions to ask. The only time I witnessed any annoyance on Robert's part was when the subject of John Bonham came up, which is quite understandable. Other than that, they sound like two old mates having a chat. Robert seemed pretty relaxed and not terribly reluctant to answer questions. I love the outtakes, brilliant. And, is it just me or, does he look pretty awesome in black?! Oh, the red shirt and boots were a nice touch too :)
So awesome to watch! That cigarette was causing issues! Haaaaaaaaa.
This is great fun , Thank you so much
Lets face it. Plant has had MANY hits after Zeppelin like Tall Cool One, and the great album with Alison Krauss, and his other hits like Sea Of Love with the Honey Drippers as well as his Manic Nirvana album with songs like SSS&Q which is one of my favorite Plant songs. Plant never failed as an artist and he succeeded in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s with his DVD with Jimmy Page called No Quarter and in the 2000s as well with Krauss. He is a FU*KING legend Hall Of FAMER !!!!!!!
I appreciate your write up, I’m blessed to have seen him 3 times , one includes Page in 1995 and the Firm way back! Great guy, held his ground with Page. Awesome shows✊✊✊✊
Yes INDEED! I’ve seen him 4 times since 2013. He is an Amazing Talent!
Tall Cool One is great
Remember a great radio interview done by JJ Jackson in 1979 with Plant and Jones.
Just re-listened to that interview yesterday, including him speaking about ITTOD. Fantastic interview that really showcased Robert's charm, music knowledge, easy going personality, intelligence, sense of humour etc. Such a great guy and its no wonder he's so admired.
I remember watching the broadcast version.
23:09 -- RP mentions 'the sound check for Knebworth' while talking about and Bonzo and Jason....he just so happens to make reference to 'some' gig; fast forward 40 years and its one of the most legendary Zep gigs (for all sorts of reasons, good and bad)....Achilles Last Stand from knebworth, the song is on the virge of coming apart at the seems for the whole song, but never does. This interview took place only 3 years after Knebworth, Bonzo's death is still very raw at this time.
Great interview
We should get Robert today to look back at that footage. Robert went on to create music far longer than Zeppelin.
Miss JJ.
He was a good sport about all those Led Zeppelin questions.
Love this.I think he views things differently now
I Miss MTV!
I agree with Robert, he did it very well 👍
A classic Music Man.
JJ was inaccurate when he said to Robert that the last time you guys were seen was in 1979 when your last album was released in the same year. He must not have realized, or forgot that they did a short tour of Europe in late June and early July of 1980 (exactly 2 years before this interview). Other than that, JJ was great as usual as interviewing.
It was a tour that was not as commercially successful as the Europe tour of 1980. Their last successful tour was Knebworth 1979.
@@danm5273 Zeppelin did a tour that wasn't successful?!
@@alexkx8599 I'm just saying the Knebworth 1979 concert was better than the european 1980 show.
@@danm5273- That's not a tour, 2 concerts isnt even a mini tour.
@@joeyhuebner10 ZEPPELIN in 1980 played around 16 shows which was basically a warm up for the American tour of 80 /81 they played mid size arenas purposely. Tickets sold out just as fast for those shows. They actually played under or at 2 hours . That's probably what would of been if it would of been the tour in America .
He's sweetie
Great video. Plant trying to fit in with the current scene. mtv totally controlling the music scene. Plant eventually finding a niche.
I grey up on MTV, never picked up on JJ’s accent before...
Some of this interview was used on the MTV Led Zeppelin Weekend aired in 82
I was a Freshman / Soph in High School I missed it ... THANK YOU MARK !!!!!!
Led Zeppelin weekend was 1986 when the firm were on tour, and little by little was Roberts latest single
Funny how JJ mentions Jason....some great foresight.
" just lost my mate." So sad! Btw does anyone else notice that King Robert and Prince Bon Scott have similar smiles!?
My favorite
Pinche hombre hermoso♡
Such a sexy, talented, good looking, Englishman . :)
Роберт, красавчик! Очень харизматичный и сексуальный! Обладает сильной манкостью! Приятно смотреть и слушать его!!!
M m missing yOU !!! ♡♡ !!!
He has no idea here the accomplishments he will achieve musically for the next 40 years
Fantastic
You see at 12 min he baits JJ. "I only have one album of material. What else would I play?" He knew what JJ was really after, and he (JJ) finally came out with it. "Will you play Zeppelin?" I first saw Plant on his The Principle of Moments tour. He played a few Zeppelin songs.
He played no zeppelin until 1988
we where the ultimate unit
❤❤❤
Singles, videos and interviews became the norm in the 80's for most artists. Unlike Zeppelin that despised that stuff. (Totally different periods of time in the music industry.)
Priceless for sure then and now or should I say Zen and now
Sometimes when he holds his head downwards and looks up and sideways with a coy smile, it reminds me of the mannerism of Princess Di. When asked how he 'keeps his pipes in shape' he says 'nicotine, tobacco'. Is that an ironic joke, or did they not know about the effects of smoking on the voice at this time?
Hey Helen! No.. I’m a smoker & no at that time period no one gave a second thought wether you smoked or not. It wasn’t until maybe the ‘90’s the ‘smoking bad for you’ started coming out.. Robert stopped sometime during that time period.. Hope you are keeping safe 🌟🌹
@@jayannakelley9051 My Dad was a smoker. In the 70s he died of lung cancer in his 60s and his friends were all dying of the same thing. They didn't know about the risks then, but I think there were suspicions among the medical profession. The tobacco companies all denied there was a risk and at that time there wasn't the research and proof to take them to court, but things began to change from the 70s onwards I believe, when more evidence started coming to light.
Helen Trope - Oh I’m so sorry to hear that Helen💔 I’ve not known anyone personally who has passed from smoking just alcohol related deaths.. Just wanted to give you a holler my fellow Zep lovin friend 🌟 Hope you are keeping safe❣️
@@jayannakelley9051 Yes, I'm keeping safe and enjoying listening to Led Zeppelin. No need to sympathise with me as those events happened such a long time ago now. I worry about people who still smoke. The only difference between that time and now is that cigarettes had no filters then and they do now.
Helen Trope - That is true.. Just wanted to give you a holler & I’m doing the same❣️ Such a much needed break from the politics over here.. whew! lol! Have a beautiful day/evening 🌟🌺
His appearance is so different here compared to knebworth 79. It's a wonder conspiracy theories weren't rampant everywhere.
he aged horribly since karac and bonzos deaths :(
Pic at 11 was a great album!
Love that back look of, " what the fuck ever" yep. Love the forward thinking and the briliant mind to move on.
Concerning whether he'd concern himself with releasing singles: "I'd concern myself with anything that's going forward."
I could be completely wrong, but I get the impression that every question related to his mate, Bonzo, was hitting Robert a bit much. His eyes would shutter, and a temporary reset seemed to take place, as if to handle the still raw emotions. I'm sorry. 😔
