Robert Plant is guest for the first time on Charlie Rose, as Plant discusses some of his musical influences: Black Rhythm & Blues, Elvis Presley and others and Plant's new album "Mighty Rearranger," during this 2005 interview.
ROBERT PLANT (b. 1948) is an English singer and songwriter, best known as the lead singer and lyricist of the English rock band Led Zeppelin for all of its existence from 1968 up until 1980.
Plant enjoyed great success with Led Zeppelin from the late 1960s to the end of the 1970s. He developed a compelling image as the charismatic rock-and-roll front man, similar to those of contemporaries such as Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, Roger Daltrey of the Who, Jim Morrison of the Doors, and Freddie Mercury of Queen. With his mane of long blond curly hair and powerful, bare-chested appearance, Plant helped to create the "god of rock and roll" or "rock god" archetype. Although Led Zeppelin dissolved in 1980, Plant occasionally collaborated with Jimmy Page on various projects in later years, including forming a short-lived supergroup with Page and Jeff Beck in 1984, called the Honeydrippers. They released an album called The Honeydrippers: Volume One, and the band had a No. 3 hit with a remake of Phil Phillips' tune "Sea of Love", plus a follow-up hit with a cover of Roy Brown's "Rockin' at Midnight".
A powerful and wide vocal range (particularly evident in his high-registered vocals) has given Plant a successful singing career spanning more than 50 years. In 2008, Rolling Stone editors ranked him number 15 on their list of the 100 best singers of all time. In 2011, Rolling Stone readers ranked Plant the greatest of all lead singers. In 2006, Hit Parader magazine named Plant the "Greatest Metal Vocalist of All Time". In 2009, Plant was voted "the greatest voice in rock" in a poll conducted by Planet Rock. Plant has influenced the style of many of his contemporaries, including Geddy Lee, Ann Wilson, Sammy Hagar, and later rock vocalists such as Jeff Buckley and Jack White who imitated his performing style. Freddie Mercury of Queen, and Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses were influenced by Plant.
In 2006, hard rock/heavy metal magazine Hit Parader named Plant as No. 1 on its list of the 100 Greatest Metal Vocalists of All Time, a list that included Rob Halford of Judas Priest (No. 2), Steven Tyler (No. 3), Freddie Mercury (No. 6), Geddy Lee (No. 13) and Paul Stanley (No. 18), all of whom were influenced by Plant.[4] In 2008, Rolling Stone named Plant the 15th-greatest singer of all time on their list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2009, he was voted the "greatest voice in rock" in a poll conducted by Planet Rock. He was included in the Q magazine's 2009 list of "Artists of the Century" and was ranked at number 8 in their list of "100 Greatest Singers" in 2007.
On 20 September 2010, National Public Radio (NPR) named Plant as one of the "50 Great Voices" in the world. (wikipedia)

I read that Robert showed up at a nursing home in Worcester Massachusetts unannounced and hung out took pics and signed autographs out of nowhere.. I am from Worcester and that always made me believe he is larger than life
I live in one town west of Worcester, & how wonderful for Robert to visit a nursing home. How nice. I’m sure a few of the clients who live there knew who he is. I’ve always loved the group since 1962. He is such a graceful man & so artistic & keeps growing. Music is my thread to tell stories in my life & Led Zeppelin was there early on.
Bien, a lo mejor él es, como persona, "más grande que una banda", que no es poco
that’s an elegant, very well spoken, articulate British chap… and the fu**ing best hair in music history.
Agree
Well said, my friend! You are on point!
Sí, a todo.. ¡Jajaja!
Gracious; charming; self-deprecating, gentle soul. Pure class.
He has staying-power, because he genuinely loves the music. Thank you Robert.
Led Zeppelin - Thank You
Rarely do you find the authentic, true package. The soul of a gentle spirit with the power of a musical beast
What a great interview. He is intelligent and well spoken. He had a lot of interesting things to say. His stories about Janice Joplin were touching.
I've been a fan of Robert Plant for 30 years and watch/listen to a lot of his interviews...it seems like the guy would measure extremely intelligent on an IQ test. He's not just a figure on a the stage. He makes such sense when he speaks and reflects upon himself when he was in his 20's writing music with and for Zep. I've never thought about it like that...now 43, I view 20 year olds as knit-wits....so it amazes me even more, the powerful music Zep wrote and performed...while being in the early-mid 20's!
I consider myself to have been born within the greatest generation, because I grew up in the era of Led Zeppelin.
Myself included with that statement! I had the great pleasure to see Led Zeppelin in concert back in ‘77’ and 20 years later in London with the Page and Plant tour.
I still enjoy listening to Led Zeppelin albums to this day ( I’m 64 now), their music will live on. 😊
I'm 81 and have been enchanted by Led ZEPPELIN since the first album. I still can't get enough. The fact that these musical geniuses came together at exactly the right time is a miracle, and of course it would not have happened if not for Jimmy Page.
@@fredfreddy2338 what a strange comment.

Beautiful hands, beautiful man. So articulate, charming and intelligent.
What a humble interview by one of the biggest rock stars of his generation
ROBERT PLANT is the ultimate Rock God. An intelligent and elegant Man peppered with gracious respect. He is a class act. ❤️
I love these interviews. Often, I am pleasantly surprised at the depth, intelligence, creativity and focused purpose that many of the “rocker” gods of my youth had/have. So much more going on behind the music.
Pay attention kids. This is what a real rock singer is.
Amen.
I don't know if Robert understood this at the time of this interview but it's not just the 70s Gen that loves zeppelin it's the rockers of the 80s and the 90s zeppelin keeps finding the young rock audience
I love Mr. Plant. Wonderful gentleman, the full package.
I'm so thankful you're still here and singing your heart out!
Plant is just so gracious!! Pure class 🤍
What an amazing man,so smart, kind and full of love ❤
I can't believe it was almost 20 years ago, I don't want this guy to grow old, I want him to be immortal, Bonzo's loss is so terrible, I want Robert and Jimmy to live forever or I want to die before they do.
Absolutely...
Wow man. Seek Jesus and be saved.
If that works for you.........but not everybody is you. Thank God for that. @@tiedyehobo
Big demands. However I may be able to help you with the last item.
Wow! What an interesting man. Such an insight into so many different topics.
The man is so authentic.
I could listen to Plant forever
People don’t understand these guys aren’t partyers, that destroys bands, they are primarily creators.
Although… in the day😂
Correct
Not partiers....
Addicts.....big difference
Read Bill Graham biography ..the truth is there.
Let him talk,Charlie!!
Charlie needs to be the star in his interviews, what a shame.
Elegance and Grace. Eloquent and Thoughtful. All goodness. One
Of the best.
One of the greatest brushes with fame in my life. I’ll never forget🌹
Class act, Charlie Rose and Robert Plant. Excellent interview.
superb human being! articulate, original. Thank you, Robert, for giving of yourself to us.
A handsome, charming man. Did I mention greatest lyricist/vocalist in rock history? That, too.
Led Zeppelin was the absolute best rock and roll band! No, you never overcompensated. Your voice was meant to be heard and reckoned with.
after Rolling Stones, you are absolutely correct.

The absolute Heavyweights .. I’d love to see a great movie about them from the start
@@donbrashsuxHollywood has been trying to make a biopic about led Zeppelin for years but they have trouble getting rights and permission on a lot of things. You are right though because of biopic about led Zeppelin right now would be incredible. Jimmy Page's son could play Jimmy because he looks just like him . 😊
Still jealous of Robert Plants incredible hair😘
Love to have one on one
Conversation over coffee
With this man.
Greatest band ever. Period.
He is the best front man ever!
I'm still in love!
The man cites Elvis Presley right off the bat when asked what his favorite rock n' roll songs are. I love that so much!
Such a cool guy
Fair and classy interview. Awesome testimony..
It's a fair and classy Robert Plant. The interview leaves a lot to be desired because Charlie Rose constantly interrupts Robert and doesn't allow the time and space, the atmosphere, for Robert to fully answer and set the slower pace, with more exploration and genteel, intellectual development of the conversation. He's not showing Robert the respect he deserves, he's conducting the interview as if he's speaking to just a flashy rock star. That's not who Robert Plant is. Robert Plant is more of an extremely intelligent, extraordinarily well educated and well read, English gentleman. Charlie is trying interview a poet as if he's merely a jester. Robert deserves so much better.
What a wonderful interview
Maybe the one good thing in a difficult day is finding out how much we need our wonderful music it’s the pleasantness of life
Every member is important
I like what Robert says about that Northern African whole Moroccan feel , in Music Also 🎶 I feel it relates , to Southern America aspecially New Orleans street feel , as have lived in both places for periods of time in my life
Soft spoken proper English gentleman.
Was anybody else annoyed by how many times Rose interrupted him when he was in the cusp of revealing something significant? How I wish someone else had been asking the questions, someone respectful enough to let him finish his thoughts before moving on to the next question. A quarter of the way through, I was frustrated and ready to strangle the dude.
Robert is amazing.
Charlie Rose interrupts, doesn’t listen, and doesn’t look. 🙁
Likes to hear his own voice!
They’re 2 guys close in age talking history but Charlie is savvy about promoting Robert’s latest album and able to get him to talk about LED Zep which he usually is resistant to discuss.
He does interrupt too much! I want to hear what Robert has to say !
#1 Fantasy Dinner Guest. Too cool for school, this Plant fella.
Too cool for school means more like snobbery and looking down upon others.

The guy doesn’t let him finish his wonderful thoughts 😢
I was just going to comment that Charlie keeps bulldozing right over Robert, terrible
Yes Charlie Rose was overrated as an interviewer. Always interrupting.
Agreed!
Was going to say the same thing. Charlie Rose putting words in his mouth and interrupting him.
If it makes you feel any better Charlie interrupted everyone. He stays neck and neck with interviewees. Shadowing them. Not giving them an inch of space. The Lester Hayes of interviewers.
Wow!
Im sitting, watching and listening to him speak, then I tell myself he'll never know about my Led Zeppelin symbols tattoo I got 3 weeks ago.

We used to live in Austin, when he did!
Wow! That is really cool!
Well, Robert Plant did and now has a visionary’s perspective. He’s an interesting man.
plant has pushed himself musically and lyrically for many years and hasn.t put out one bad album
Well, he has put out some albums that kind of got stuck in the era they came out in - Now and Zen and Manic Nirvana for example. But something like Principle of Moments is pretty damn timeless and Mighty Rearranger is just plain slamming. Then after this he does the Raising Sand record which is just amazing. Bottom line is he has always stretched and tried different things and occasionally hits gold. Sadly Page never really found his legs after Zeppelin.
By the Shaken'n'Stirred times he seemed to be quite dazed and confused. And in Walking into Clarksdale, his lyrics seemed dried up (min 3:30 may well refer to that). The public noticed that on sales.
Plant turned down almost a billion dollars to do a tour with Led Zeppelin. He was found playing Constantena in an old welsh pub later that year. Talk about a man that goes back to his roots.😂
Love it , Artistry
I was front row for the PHX show . . The closest I came to the Golden God. .
Loved the Valkyries at the end. Valhalla...
What a great interview. It was way too short.
13:47 Robert Plant loves Morocco ❤✌
It's quite ironic to hear Robert talk about how the youth movement of the '60s and '70s felt like they had an obligation to fight against and root out corruption, when that same generation became the most corrupt generation in history.
Charlie Rose is annoying in how often he interrupts. Not just in this interview, in almost all of them.
Charlie Rose is so annoying - he won't let Robert Plant finish his sentences. Robert is perfectly articulate and capable of expressing his own thoughts, without Charlie jumping in and putting words in his mouth.
So true.
I just love to hear him talkk
No kidding! I could listen to him read a phonebook and I would still be fascinated!
You know Charlie you cut him off in this conversation
You know who you were talking to didn’t you
Charlie, let him talk
Percy old friend, you're the best ...
The best hair ever
Charlie Rose cut him off too many times and didn't let him complete his thoughts.
Ego is one of those things that can make you or ruin you
A smashing man a great singer and to top it all a Wolves fan 😂
Absolutely fantastic 22:22 22:29
When Led Zeppelin stopped Jimmy Paige kept going - honed a solo career. After he won a Grammy and the band asked him to tour, Paige refused, saying they haven't toured for so long they have no idea what's involved in stage work, traveling, nevermind overhead. Paige is so far removed from Led Zeppelin at this point, I don't think he liked Rose's question of, being continuously associated with the band - I didn't. It shows Charlie has no idea of the extent of Page's collaborations after Led Zeppelin stopped. Rose would have shocked Paige - and maybe garnered a small amount of respect if he mentioned Greta Van Sustern 🤣
Thanks for uploading a great interview ‼️💯
30:22…sublime
👍
The difference in Plants mentality and intelligence is huge here.
Roberts got a really big head. When you see him next to someone else. His head is huge and its still growing.
I miss Charlie.
I love that without Black American music there would be no Elvis and there would be no Robert Plant. Very interesting.
And without British and Irish folk music they’d be no blues either, it’s a never ending cycle, black people don’t criticise rap ripping off rock music do they? And let’s not forget without the British bands and people getting behind Motown and blues then it would never have gotten a audience,🇬🇧 Plenty of British music wasn’t influenced by American either,
Robert has great hands!
He hasn’t aged well but still so talented. If he were a woman looking so old in the public eye, no one would care about his talent but would focus on his looks. Good thing he’s a man and therefore valued for more than his appearance. Our society is very shallow when it comes to a person’s value.
For me he was always the most beautiful man and today, he is it still.
Plant looks great for the things he did to his body back in Zeppelin’s prime. Jimmy Page looks the worst due to his being addicted to smack for a long period
I think he looks great.
He’s almost 60 years old here. He looks fabulous. And there are plenty of incredibly talented, unattractive women that are recognized for their abilities despite their appearance. Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Queen Elizabeth are two of them. Celine Dion has never been attractive and she is a superstar. Your premise is deeply flawed.
