Hessel van der Wal I don't know, I really wish he would release something then tour, I saw Jeff Beck a few years ago and it was the best concert I've even seen. I know Page has spent the last few years re-mixing and mastering the entire Zep catalog. That was time consuming, maybe now that he's done with that he'll have time to record some new material.
Page would probably agree with you. I've seen Page in concert more times than any other Zep Member, all post-Zeppelin from the Firm right to the Black Crowes shows. He is a joy to watch play, but I am definitely biased. I did get to see Jeff Beck one on the "Loud Hailer" tour- and he was nothing less than fucking amazing. It's like the guitar is a part of his body, one white Strat the entire night, no effects, just his guitar, and amp.I was really fortunate to be there. You could tell there were a lot of guitar players in the audience the night I saw him, everyone's jaws were in their laps. It was inspiring. Cheers!

@@jimmypage7275 Jimmy, as you are probably aware, there are many reactors of music that are following Zeppelin from the first lp right to the end. I've encouraged those not familiar with your music to start from the beginning, so as to grasp the creative unfolding of the band and it's music. The reactions I've witnessed from those hearing the music for the first time brings a joy to my heart, and allows me to reexperience my discovery all over again. I just want to thank you for being true to yourself and your audience.
I'm not as old as Jimmy Page, but I'm old enough to say that as you age, you want to talk about what you have cared deeply about in life and have worked for, and what your legacy might be, and it really warms my heart to hear him talk about his origins and what he's created. Such a bright intelligence and spirit.
Exactly the same here. Also not as old as him, but I also find that as I get older I do find myself wanting to talk about things I care about and reassessing and re-evaluating different things in life.
Probably the most coherent and clear interview have ever heard from any rockstar of his caliber. He was a master of dynamics and producing, something he doesn't get enough credit for
Me too! I was playing organ at church and singing in the choir at the age of 15 when I went round to my mate's house and he put 'The Song Remains the Same' on and handed me a spliff. I shouted 'I want to do that!!' haha!
Jimmy is such a well spoken, intelligent person. You don't normally think of "intellectual, well spoken" when you think of "rock n roll guitarist". I could listen to him talk for hours. So interesting to listen to this!
Well keep playing the backwards method backwards over and over until you can discern something recognizing or just send it to China, or France to get a translation.
I mean this in a funny&positive way''Your a stupid dude'' I found your comment hilarious. The phrase that is in parentheses is Texas penitentiary slang. It was pretty good, and had a few photos in the middle. Can't remember how many pages, but I would say at least 21/2,3inches thick.Keep on rocking in the free world!!!
I saw them 4 times in the 70's..No one in the audience has and will ever be able to grasp who Jimmy Page was as a working rock star..The experience was like no other..He was so commanding..Magical is a good description.
It should be Sir Jimmy Page!! Wonderful video that just shows how special and amazing this man is. What a life, what an artist, the definition of Epic.
Fascinating listening to Jimmy. He is remarkably humble and without ego considering where he sits in the pantheon of rock-'n'-roll history. Quite a lifetime achievement Jimmy - thanks to you and your fellow musical geniuses in Led Zeppelin.
@@Nred9999 Lol shes not faking it at all, she had been with Bowie. The L.A. Queens are world famous groupies. Jimmy dated "that girl" Lori Maddox for quite a long time. It's a fact.
@@Nred9999 The question of rape in particular wasnt claimed by anyone here. I merely pointed out that Jimmy Page was fucking 14 year olds when he was 28. And technically a child cannot give sexual consent, so 'legally' it is always rape when an adult has sex with a child. Its fairly concerning you need this explained to you.
I have great adoration and respect for Jimmy as a highly cultured and refined man. I would have loved to have been seated in this hall of learning to hear Jimmy speak but thank goodness for the video here.
I can find one case where he did have a (mutual consent) relationship with a 14-year old girl (Lori Maddox), so i do not understand why our pious Pope is using the plural here ("14 year old chicks"). And i also wonder if our pious Pope would have been so disciplined himself. Jimmy was 26 at that time and they just fell in love ... It can happen, and she actually appears to be quite adult, so think it is a gross exaggeration to call him "a paedophile" (Conan 1812). And why call Lori a "groupie tramp"? How can you speak in such a negative way about persons that you do not even know?
J william Pope strange how Page does the Lori Maddox thing and it's fine Kevin Spacey tries it with a 14 year old and is ( rightfully of course)villified.
jsilence418: It is a totally different case, because there was no mutual consent and Spacey tried to rape the person involved. See: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/oct/30/kevin-spacey-anthony-rapp-apologises-accused-sexual-advance-14-year-old-boy "Anthony Rapp claimed he was left traumatised after Spacey lay on top of him during evening at actor’s apartment 31 years ago (...) He said Spacey “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk ... He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold." The case of Jimmy Page and Lori Maddox was totally different. As Lori describes herself, they fell in love and had a relationship for three years with mutual consent.
"... whether it was acoustic music, whether it was classical music, whether it was rock'n'roll music, whether it was blues music, country blues music, I was just -- had a voracious appetite for all of it." As a musician, it makes me happy to relate to him on this matter.
I always rank the progression as Beatles, followed jointly by PF & LZ. I highly doubt we would have seen the same PF or LZ without the Beatles, despite them all having the same influences.
@@rovcanada1the Beatles are not even close to level of musicianship that LZ and PF had. They are heads and shoulders above them. So are Deep Purple. In fact the Beatles are massively overrated. Catchy tunes does not translate to well composed complicated music. They are not one and the same. One is fun, one is art.
I worshipped Jimmy Page when I was a teenager. 30 years later, I merely admire him greatly, but every time I think about his (and Led Zeppelin's) music, I remember how much it always moved me and still does. "Physical Graffiti" was my first LZ album, and it's still, to me, the absolute apex of rock music. Everything is there on that record. A masterpiece, as nearly all of their albums were. 12 years and 9 brilliant, focused studio albums. I'm so grateful for them.

Great question and even better answers. I love that unlike most people, he doesn’t try making jokes or using techniques to hold an audience. Just him being there and talking about music is enough for anyone to want to listen.
What an energetic, refreshing experience. Jimmy seemed interested & enthusiastic in his descriptions and answering questions from audience members. What great memories he inspired, esp from this viewer!
A pure and utter musical genius and a brilliant interview. What a privilege it must have been to be in the audience and ask a question of the great man. Outstanding.
He reminded the audience that Zeppelin's music was unusual and experimental, even for the late 60's. Of course their style was subsequently so influential, that we now see it as mainstream.

yes, good speech, but he's not particularly good at answering some of those questions.. rambled or sidetracked .. still, at 70-something thats not surprising .. they should've had him as a guest YEARS ago
Page rocks... and he is still quick witted... he was not rambling or sidetracked, he was just filtering his answers to some really sophomoric questions as best it could be done at any age.
Monsieur Page has always rambled on; it's just his style. I don't think it's the drugs or his age. The important thing is that his creative drive has been linear. He has known what he wanted to do and has done it, using a language without words. His legacy speaks for itself, and I'm perfectly happy to spend a few extra seconds waiting for him to express himself.
Reprogramming Mind Exact same sentiments here. Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Joe Perry & Brad Whitford, Rick Derringer, Buck Dharma, etc.
That was a fantastic speech, interview, and question answering session. I was a loyal fan in 1968 when they were viewed by the main stream media as too far on the fringe to be worthy of any notice. We were all young then. I bought the albums and went to the concerts. I loved it, absolutely loved it. It was a great time and a great band.

He still lies and tries to act like he was doing original things though. Good on him for giving up the cigs and booze though, that's commendable in and of itself👍
Thank you for posting this fascinating interview. Well first of all, what a special man and gentleman Mr. Page is. I was never a raving Led Zeppelin fan, but I just read Pete Townshend’s book, “Who I Am,” in which he writes about Jimmy Page, and I am currently reading Glyn Johns’ book, “Sound Man,” in which both authors highly praise Page’s expertise in music. And so I have been interested in how Mr. Page got started in music, his session playing (it seems he was the English session playing equivalent of Wrecking Crew’s Glen Campbell or Tommy Tedesco), and various stories about his career. I am one of those who thinks that his live solos in Stairway are about the best Guitar playing that’s ever been recorded. The reason for me is that when he plays live, I feel that I can hear the emotion and the life experience in is performances. Being that open to self expression is quite a human feat. He is just downright an impressive man.
As a guitarist, Jimmy Page has had a HUGE influence on me and my playing. I am, by no means, as accomplished a player a Jimmy Page, but I truly enjoy his playing and strive to learn some of his techniques and sounds. What joy I have found in trying to learn Mr. Page's riffs! I have a great love of Mr. Page and his associates in Led Zeppelin, for creating such wonderful sounds for me to attempt to emulate.
I really enjoyed this. I’ve been a Jimmy page fan since I was 12, I’m 44 now. I was introduced to led zeppelin by my dad who had a couple of albums. I loved the way he answered the questions, such honesty, such imagination and musical genius. Thank you Jimmy Page ❤️❤️👌👌
I really enjoy The Oxford Union series, but this one, in particular, is incredibly engaging. This could have been 3 hours and I would have been glued to it. The perfect forum for such an important musician in modern music history. Loved this... Well Done!!!

Andrew Reddy you, my friend, are the definition of derivative. Its an old and tired argument, and doesnt really speak much to the music, only that someone had played a certain melody or written a line the same way, a very superficial way to look at music.
Derivative maybe, but who else had done it in a way that defined a genre like Led Zeppelin did? It's been what, nearly 38 years since LZ disbanded and we're still discussing them as if it was yesterday?

This was great! I play Guitar, Jimmy was my inspiration. First time I met Jimmy and saw Led Zeppelin was at the Whisky Sunset Strip Hollywood 1969. Saw them many times front row and went to the after party`s. Jimmy was always a great guy to talk to. Those were great times. Thanks Jimmy!
oh you lucky guy ! ....I saw LED ZEPPELIN one time: their last concert on july 8th ( - i think -) 1980 here in Berlin at the Eissporthalle with JOHN BONHAM.
The drums on LZ records was outstanding, Jimmy made them sound so clear and powerful like no one else, even till today I consider Bonzo s drum sound as a benchmark sound. It was miles ahead of the other bands ...
Jimmy has really changed since I saw him 43 years ago at The Checkerdome(arena) in St. Louis Mo! Lessons learned that night: 1. He really is THAT good. 2. John Paul Jones is the secret sauce behind Zep. 3. Robert Plant was not only a phenomenal vocalist... he was a natural entertainer. 4. John Bonham really liked whiskey. Bottle of Jack Daniel's next to his kit. Of course he killed on drums. A night to remember for this then-17 yearold. 20th row center. These were my heroes.
No one really questioned his guitar playing abilities back then. That's more of a modern fallacy that he was only a good studio musician. Much of this is due to his style that may come across as "sloppy" in an age of post editing. To the point, modern music has become artificial and souless. I mean real talent isn't necessary scarce. It's just not welcome or even needed. Oh you can't sing? No problem. You don't play an instrument? No problem.
@@HooksBill Agreed! That's why my cover band is 'old school'. If there are four way vocal harmonies ... we sing four harmonies with NO harmonizers, backing tracks, etc. Same with all guitars and keys. No pace to hide. We, a band of four, took on 'Stairway' and 'Free Bird' last year because, as you are probably aware .... there is always that one guy that yells out "Play Stairway" or "Play Free Bird". Well we performed both last year and the crowds. went. wild. Now both are often on our set list. Few can believe that we would take these on-- especially in the vocal and guitar departments. Fortunately we have a gunslinger of a guitarist and a vocalist who does a very solid Robert Plant. All good. All fun. Keeping it real ... as best we can.

Cheers!

I'm young and a musician that is in the making of his own legacy. I can only imagine the feeling of the end.

J William Pope : Research what your talking about.
You sound hot.
See: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/oct/30/kevin-spacey-anthony-rapp-apologises-accused-sexual-advance-14-year-old-boy
"Anthony Rapp claimed he was left traumatised after Spacey lay on top of him during evening at actor’s apartment 31 years ago (...) He said Spacey “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk ... He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold."
The case of Jimmy Page and Lori Maddox was totally different. As Lori describes herself, they fell in love and had a relationship for three years with mutual consent.

Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. They both are #1 - each for their musical style; which to this day remains 100% relevant and perfection. Geniuses.

@@rovcanada1the Beatles are not even close to level of musicianship that LZ and PF had. They are heads and shoulders above them. So are Deep Purple. In fact the Beatles are massively overrated.

Humility has rarely been a defining characteristic of Jimmy Page or Led Zeppelin, but I suppose one could say the same of almost any band.
Creating a new art form? LZ are renowned among musicians for being derivative populist hacks
Andrew Reddy you, my friend, are the definition of derivative. Its an old and tired argument, and doesnt really speak much to the music, only that someone had played a certain melody or written a line the same way, a very superficial way to look at music.

Well we performed both last year and the crowds. went. wild. Now both are often on our set list. Few can believe that we would take these on-- especially in the vocal and guitar departments. Page is so underrated. He deserves more likes and views.
Underrated? Try Rain Song.
Everyone that wants to record an album in the 1970s should listen to this advice
😅😅
Under-rated ?
Are on drugs ?
Underrated? Silly person.
Absolutely enjoyed this session!
Mr. Page should have been knighted right along with Sir Elton John. Thank you, and thank you Jimmy Page as well as the rest of the band for all the wonderful music. Page is a treasure.
Lord of riffs!
So very grateful for this interview- lifelong Zep fan on this end. Mercí. 🌺

Wow, just Wow. What a wonderful genius
really.. you had wonder from just one song?
Mark 8:36 For what does it profit a man to gain the the whole world but lose his lose . Jimmy page has gained everything the world has to offer but unless he accepts Jesus Christ he will loose his soul . Really sad . Eternity is going to be far longer than a few years on earth .
Jesus is the way the truth and the life . Have a great day .
@@MR.CHarming-i5x You small-minded fool. You pathetic dogmatist. You are not worthy to pass judgement on any human being, yet you believe you have the answers. How do you make sense of yourself?
@@vinniesharkears I listened to Led Zepplin back in the 80's when I was young . My point was knowing the things Jimmy Page was involved in during his career it is sad . We are all getting older . Jimmy Page and his love of the occult and Crowley is sad . Somebody called Page a genius . I cannot Judge him Jesus will Judge him . It is just sad to me he has gained the whole world and there approval but he is going to lose his soul . Unless he accepts Jesus is my point none of us are getting any younger .
Always a pleasure listening to Jimmy

Didnt realize this about Page. That he's a fascinating talker, sophisticated narrator. I guess the Oxford Union knew that and is why they invited him to speak.
They also invited Tommy Robinson
I can only hope that the students present will, if they haven't already, do their research on this man and the body of work he's produced and the legacy that he's left for everyone to enjoy. Very interesting, inspiring, and an amazing journey to study. From his style of playing, his recording/production prowess, to the unbridled POWER that Mr. Page has put on display for all to see. One of my true influences when it comes to music and so much more.
Even after all these years, Jimmy's enthusiasm is still there he is much, much more than just a phenomenal lead guitarist.

Saw them in 95 during the Page/Plant tour. Awesome doesn't describe it. Watching this you realize, he really is truly a genius of his genre.

I did to w/ my late brother in Boston.never unfortunately got to see led zeppelin but the 2 twin towers jimmy page and Robert plant.they did the "welcome to clarksdale album" and several Led Zeppelin covers.loved that album, had a Egyptian barge sound and of course great songs that I grew up with.Led Zeppelin-that greatest rock band of all time!!!
Page's work as a player & composer is of course legendary. But his work as producer is equally legendary, particularly Zep 1. Listening to "I Can't Quit You Baby" is such a pure experience today, 50 years later!
Should have gone for another hour. Page was clearly up to it. Solid gold, this.
A living legend ! I wish I could talk a week or so with this man. He should get video time to share all his knowledge. I think he would love that ! Thank you Mr. Page for the music in my life !
I've always said that an expert is not someone who, given a situation, knows exactly what to do; an expert is someone who knows what NOT to do. Jimmy points this out at 19:00 !
