- Jimmy Page is one of music’s greatest guitarists, innovators and legends-Rolling Stone called him “one of rock’s most important and influential guitar players, writers, and producers” and ranked him number nine on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. He talks about his life and career as the groundbreaking guitarist for one of rock’s most iconic bands in a rare interview with Jeff Koons, widely regarded as one of the most important, influential and controversial artists of the postwar era.
His new book, Jimmy Page, the first ever by a member of Led Zeppelin, is his official autobiography, a photographic essay he personally created to tell his story for the very first time.

I literally came across Mr. Page on a street in London in February. He was all alone. Looking in a furniture window. I tapped his shoulder and said "thank you for all the joy and happiness you've provided me" and walked off. Over my shoulder I heard "hold on". I turned around and he said to me "No. Thank you." Then I walked off.

You'll never, EVER hear anything like him again. I'm sure Zeppelin will always be on the radio for future generations to hear the way music was really meant to be, but I'm so glad I lived in the time he and Led Zeppelin were walking on earth.

People can debate which guitarist is the greatest: Jimmy, Jimi, Eric, etc. But when you combine Jimmy's playing, his studio work and the hundreds of songs he played on, his work with the Yardbirds, his song writing contributions, his skills as a producer and recording engineer, his visionary direction as the architect of Led Zeppelin's career path, and his continuing role as the caretaker of their legacy.......it puts Jimmy among the very top of the most important figures in the history of modern music. There are probably only a small handful of people who ever had a bigger impact on modern music....maybe just one or two. We won't see anyone like him again.

I saw Led Zeppelin three years in a row: 1971-1972-1973, when they were one of the most (THE most?) famous bands in the world. Those were the years I was 16-17-18, so they were a huge influence on my life. Seeing them live was quite a treat, as I still remember in me old mind...

Hard to explain what the OP may mean by their influence, but for me as a teenager with artistic interests, it was something like their lyrics and stories and musical aesthetics were proclaiming to you as a listener to open your mind and experience the magical journey of life, and as a wanna be artist upon getting into Zep as a teen in the 80s, their songs showed me how pure craftsmanship, musicianship, artistry, can reach heights that only other bands can dream about, and that why not strive for such lofty heights in my own art.

The guitar sound he achieved on the first two Zeppelin albums is astonishing, Its still the heaviest stuff fifty+ years later.
Zeppelin II is the perfect rock album. The entire album is a blueprint to how rock must be played.
I don't know him personally,, but judging by this interview, he is extremelly humble since he's the co-founder of the biggest band of the 70's.
Every time Jimmy says “okay” makes me think it’s something he’s developed as an out to end endless conversations with fans.
I listened to Led Zepplin One more than 100 times in 1968 at 12 years old. Best time of my life, thanks Jimmy!

I went to his book signing in Toronto July 21, all I can say is everything we see Jimmy do, his swag,kindness,generosity and so on.. Its 1000000000000% better in person. He was very humble and grateful for me going to his book signing. Jimmy flat out is the man.

Jimmy is a beautiful soul. He emanates sincerity, kindness and respect. He is responsible for many generations of guitar players. I was one of those kids who would wear out my records trying to learn his guitar playing style and craft. A true musical genius.

Jimmy Page is the driving, organizing, technical force behind Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant, John Bonham, JPJ, all great artist-that Jimmy surrounded himself with and created one of the greatest bands of the 20th century. They are great artists and will go down in history.
What a fantastic and enriching interview this is. Jimmy Page is very articulate, astute, humble, classy, funny and very down to earth. A great, creative and innovative artist, musician, composer, producer that loves his craft and his fans, who will never ceased to be loved, respected and admired by all including myself!

Jimmy becomes quite chatty and charming as he relaxes and warms to his subject. Quite an accomplished man and a giant in his field.

so love this band, and Jimmy Page just carries himself with such class and intelligence. Not even a shred of arrogance...and given what he has achieved, that speaks volumes as to his character. I loved how excited he was in retelling the story of singing along with Leona Lewis, just effusive in his accolades of her, and I also loved his retelling of how he was able to keep his energy up, "If you were in a band like that you just had the energy to be honest with you, because it was just so exhilarating.." And his recall of names, dates, places, faces incredible. What a fabulous interview......Only sorry I never had the chance to see them live in their hey day
based on his music, I can totally imagine him as a raving lunatic personality too! It is neat the way his demeanor here belies his ability to create thunderous sounds.

Led Zeppelin was and still is by far the best ever debut album by any band, not even The Beatles had such an accomplished debut.

Jimmy Page is one of the greatest guitarist who can only improvise sounds and different chord structures when he played with Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones live with Led Zeppelin. He probably played differently every night with passion, imagination and the sounds that he plays is so unexpected. After listening to those recordings from their BBC Sessions to other live performances, it seems he wanted and instinctively played amazingly with his guitar solos, riffs and other chords coming from classical music composers. It was his touch of embedding on his guitar solos. So clever! Being a producer, guitarist and being a part of Led Zeppelin was so incredible! For those Led Zepp fans, and other music lovers who listen to their music - it will be a treat if you listen to their live performance recordings. Every time they play - there are a lot of improvisations, mutations when they play their songs. No one ever does that except Led Zeppelin - they are the only band that does that!
They're not the only band who does that lol you probably haven't watched Queen concerts. Queen didn't just improvise a lot, they frequently did medleys of multiple songs in their live performances. But aside from that, I agree with you. I've watched Led Zeppelin at Danmark TV 1969 and Royal Albert Hall 1970, they're awesome.

I feel as if I have finally gotten to know Jimmy Page. Led Zep albums are all in my vinyl collection, but just recently I've started to get to know them, truly. What a dear, special part of my teen years. Now it's coming back!

Interesting though...he did not even mention his contemporary genius guitarist--Jimi Hendrix--and he once claimed to have never even met Jimi...hard to believe, as the circle of British musicians around in the late 60s included Hendrix.
It's amazing to me how this band is still so much a part of my life. The feelings and memories it provokes every time i hear one of their songs. I bought my first Led zeppelin album when i was twelve i'm now fifty eight and i enjoy them as much or more now than i did then! THANK YOU!!!!

If you don't understand how great this man is I pity you, I started playing guitar when I was 12 and 43 years later I'm still trying to master Jimmy Page, I can play his songs but I could never write one like him or play them with his soul, his versatility is unmatched.

I think calling him a god shows the degradation of society that has no desire to call on the real God of heaven and earth ,that is not bound by space and time ,That can do all things including creating everything such as a human being that can play an instrument ,Just shows you what infinite God we have !!! When I was young Jimmy was 5 years older than me and he still is. I didn't know much about Led Zeppelin in my youth because they didn't release singles. I passed on the chance to see them in San Francisco, a decision I will regret until I die. Led Zeppelin is the finest rock band to have walked our earth.
When I was 15 my parents lived in Malaysia and I dragged my parents to drive to Singapore to see the Yardbirds. Jimmy page, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. It was quite new for them looking around and watching everybody screaming but they really enjoyed the music. Little did I know Led Zepplin would happen when I came to live in America. And even my parents were well into their middle age at that point Could appreciate Jimmy page’s music, and actually liked listening to Led Zeppelin. So nice that I could share it with my senior parents that could appreciate this music. Truly a quintessential rock band Of all time!

He seems genuinely a humble guy. Most of them let the fame go to their heads, I think. He's has been one of my greatest influences regarding guitar.

What's amazing about Led Zeppelin is "In through the Outdoor."
It was completely different from their early material,incorporated West African polyrhythms + proto goth-rock yet still sounded like them. They never stopped evolving and it wasn't forced. Freaking incredible.
I love lots and lots of guitarists, as a player myself, but if I were really, really pushed to narrow it down to the one... It would have to be this man. Seems like an absolutely lovely man too. Thank you, Jimmy for all your amazing music.

Jimmy page I was fortunate enough to see your shows in your prime each being as exciting to experience as the previous more of an adventure into the talent and just an experience unparalleled before by my senses it was a fabulous time and I felt your presense was the pinnacle of that era somehow still unexplainable to me in words I saw you on east coast usa in just the perfect time I thank you for being there and here now I hope you are well and continue to be inspirational intellectually spiritually physically as you are here still in this magical moment too. My dad was a record producer in London in the 60s and I remember him mentioning two session guitarists who were the best: Big Jim Sullivan and Little Jim.
Jimmy, you deserve an interviewer with intellect. Koons isn't fit to replace your guitar strings. (And you've been on my bucket list since I was a teenage girl!)

LED Zeppelin we’re part o my youth in the 70s. It was a fantastic time to be a teen with all the great music around. LED Zeppelin were such a iconic talented band. Still listen to their music and love it.
This is the most amazing interview I have ever heard,! I've been listening to Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page since 1976 when I was like nine years old and I had no idea that he was so talented as a young musician and played on all those famous albums! I appreciate him more than I ever had before. Thank you Jimmy for an amazing life and career! The other thing I never realized is Jimmy was the driving force behind Led Zeppelin and created what they became! Such an amazing person! This interview has taken my listening of Led Zeppelin to a whole new level! I need to buy a new Marantz amplifier! By the way Jimmy's memory is amazing when he's reflecting back on all these songs and situations from many years back. He is the genius behind Led Zeppelin! And I had no idea. I really appreciate this interview.

His music truly is life-changing music, it certainly changed my life and led to me getting into bands, meeting my former partner and having my son. Not to mention changing my view of music and myself forever. Thank you Jimmy for the inspiration, the excitement, the intensity.
I think it was systemic back then, jagger, Bowie, beatles and they all had very willing participants, which is not to minimise it and say it is ok, but it was culturally very different

I seen Zeppelin around 1977 in Louisville, Ky., it was hands down the best show I'd ever seen. And, I had seen some really good bands back then, Pink Floyd, Lynard Skynard, Queen, Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper, etc.. But, Zeppelin was always my favorite band, hands down, not even close. I idolized them. I wore that damn black t-shirt I picked up at their concert for years! Wish I still had it. What a band. Thanks Jimmy for doing the interview, and I also liked the guy doing the interview, he seemed blown away to be on stage with Jimmy Page.
Sounds like we went to many of the same concerts. We are so lucky to have had the experience of this music!

I knew an older woman who saw Led Zeppelin in Louisville KY at Freedom Hall. She said it was so crowded her feet didn't touch the ground all night + her BF had to hold her on his shoulders half the time. She said their hearing was shot for 2 days + it was the best concert she'd ever seen. This was the 90's after 3 decades of concert experiences.

Agreed. I love listening to how Jimmy Page developed as a musician and the development of the band. Jeff Koons does a great job here...maybe because of his own artistic background and perspective.

the fact that jimmy page is the greatest guitarist of all time isn’t really something you can debate, it’s just fact. people who argue otherwise are ignorant. plain and simple. his work speaks for itself.
I find his electric guitar playing sloppy, unmusical, and boring, although I liked some of his acoustic playing. He is WAY overrated, and a satanist.

I've heard Jimmy Page in interview before. He is always so humble and willing to give credit to others. Jeff Koons didn't deserve this interview. This was not his conversation to lead, but to ask and listen.

I'm back again, 2 yrs. later and this interview is still just as incredible to me as it was the first time I watched it. Jimmy looks amazing! He has aged very well. I wish something like this with John Paul Jones would come about. That would be fantastic! Maybe one day? I hope!

Great guitarists become one with there instrument while playing, blocking out everything around them. Great examples besides Jimmy Page...Eddie Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix.
All the years growing up with the “mystique “ of Jimmy. Turns out he’s just a super sweet, shy, and amazingly humble. I’m so proud that Zep was, is, and will be my all time favorite band. I can’t imagine my life without their music. It has had major influence throughout my life.
