….well yeah but you can get even better specs from Dell or Asus for much less money

The appeal of earlier models was portability.

@Ozan Doruk I will probably get iPad Pro for tablet and Dell XPS or alike for laptop. Samsung had nice laptops this year too.
Microsoft seems to have killed the Surface Pro idea it looks. From lightweight Intel machine that doubles as tablet it is now underpowered laptop that is too heavy for tablet use

@@NighthunterNyx That doesn't make sense. It clearly is not underpowered. It's way more powerful than any previous Windows tablet and more powerful than all 10th Gen and most 11th gen Intel ultrabooks on the market.

I feel that way about my surface pro 7 plus!!! It's incredible! I'll NEVER go back to just having a laptop or desktop. The versatility is amazing, it's light weight and can be used as either a stand alone tablet or a laptop with backlit keys! Incredible! I'm partial to having both USB A and USB C ports which was in the end my deciding factor when wanting that model specifically! You also can't bet the multi day battery life. And I use mine regularly for editing videos, writing papers, researching and taking notes!

Brett, your introduction of S pro 8 is just perfect and gave me all the answers I had, since I was thinking about an upgrade.

Great video. The returning fan for the i3 and i5 and the ability to draw higher power, coupled with the 11th gen processors, is a big deal for people with my use case (people who need some decent power when docked, but need a long-lasting tablet on the go). I doubt TB will be of any value to me but the screen and pen enhancements look promising. I'll be waiting another generation, but the future looks bright for the Surface Pro line.

I've upgraded from SP3 to 8 and just in that awkward time of waiting for it to arrive. The lack of SDCard was a bumma but that made me switch from 256 to 512 SSD from the getgo. I'm really looking forward to trying my hand at using the new pen. It was never thing for me because of the lag and my writing skills are as good a doctors, sometimes I can't even read my own writing. That I hope with the pen and persistence will improve back to a legible scribe. I've had a desire to try my hand at digital art so this will be the time to giving this a real shot in the arm.
My Surface Pro 3 hasn't skipped a beat (went through a few keyboards), but I'm still using daily with no regrets and it was only an i5. With an i7 and 16Gb RAM in my SP8 I cannot wait to experience the difference. I was also pushed the Windows 11 Alpha on my SP3 and it's been very solid and again looking forward to Windows 11 Gold on the SP8. Now it's just got to ARRIVE (supposedly Nov 3)

Good summary that isn't a stupid comparison with the iPad. I think I will replace my pro x with one of these. I really need to confirm the battery claims are legit. I was in a day long meeting today and wrote notes on the x and didn't worry at all about battery.

    • @andyH_England

I doubt it will get half the claimed amount if you are using a pen as it will run at 120Hz knocking off considerable battery life. I am assuming it is fixed 120Hz per app rather than dynamic as per the iPad which will dial down to 10Hz if you pause writing, but that is a guess? For normal usage expect 8-10hr SoT based on my SPX data.

I agree. I have an SP7 and an iPad Pro. While the writing experience is better on the iPad, the SP7 is a true pro machine. All business. I can't even write a paper on the iPad version of Word since all my references cannot be imported.
      Then there's printers and scanners.
And all the stuff that I can't do like emulation, installing whatever it is I want to install... It's a pretty garden for sure but the walls are stifling.

    • @gyozakeynsianism

I don't think we need to worry too much about the battery life claims. Other devices with possibly worse thermal management but with the same 11th gen chipsets are already showing much improved battery life over everything in the 10th gen lineup, so I would not be surprised if the device routinely went 10+ hours with normal usage (with a claimed 16 h). The higher-wattage capability won't be an issue when you're in battery saver on the go (though it will come in handy when you're plugged in or docked). In any case, this will certainly be better than my SP7 in terms of battery life, and even though it disappoints in terms of battery life in some circumstances, I wouldn't worry too much about any all-day OneNote sessions, particularly with Wi-Fi off.

It's inevitable that Surface Pro devices will keep improving: Tech Convergence and iteration/maturation on all the combined technologies will driving innovation in this form factor. Eg SP8 shows this with: Hardware (Screen), Specs (+LTE), new CPU), Design (Hinge, SPX typecover), Software (Win11), Accessories (SlimPen2) - all iterative improvements...
At some point Surface Pros will be as good or better devices than having Tablet + Laptop. This is a really good upgrade by Microsoft and matches or beats other offerings.
The weight is critical: Ideally weight needs to ensure it's not too top-heavy as a laptop nor too heavy as a tablet. And of course lighter the better for portability.

iPads are just big iPhones that can only run 1.9 million smartphone apps. This is why their unit sales have plummet from 73 million to 40 million. SPs are real computers that run 35 million Windows applications. As for MBs, they are not computer-tablets and lack all the key features of SPs (touchscreen, pen support, face unlock, 2-in-1 design, detechable screen, upgradability, etc.).
Moreover, MBs have a long history of poor quality which why there are class-action lawsuits file against MBs just about every year. For example in the past 6 years there have been lawsuit regarding keyboard, thermal throttling, green screen, connectivity, and cracked screens (2021's lawsuit).
Finally, why would anyone buy 2 devices (at twice the money) when they can get 1 device....

I had the same configuration for almost two months, just exchanged mine for one with an i5, 8gb ram, and 256gb ssd. I run two external monitors and have felt no perceived difference in performance since the switch. I honestly think this one heats up far less and stays cooler longer than the previous model. I think it's performance is still limited by it's chasis, and there's not much else you can do about that outside of going the ARM route that apple took with it's devices.

I just bought my first surface device, pro 8, i7, 16GB RAM. I really like the device but found the battery life of 3-4 hours underwhelming and the device does not seam to charge with usb c what so ever in any of the thunderbolt ports, is that normal or should it be able to charge using a normal usb c?
Also every now and then there is a little hitch just browsing/watching YT (like a quick black screen, less than a second, maybe two or three times after using it for only 2 days) would you say this is normal or should I send the device back and ask for a new one?

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  Год назад

I'll start with USB-C charging. Not any old USB-C charger will do. Large devices like this typically require the PD or Power Delivery charging standard. With a PD charger you'll be good to go.
Next, battery life. Check your battery pages in settings. It will tell you what is consuming your power. It's likely to be Google Chrome as it is a resource hog. For better battery life use Microsoft Edge and turn on efficiency mode at a times when on battery. Check settings in Edge. You have an i7 processor model, it will consume more power by default. But with a bit of smart management you should get a few more hours from it fairly easily.
And lastly, I don't know about the glitch you're seeing. It's hard to know without seeing it. Check that your device and software are up to date. You may need to check this with your local experts. You might also find support for that by posting about it (maybe a video) in the Surface Reddit pages or Facebook groups.

No matter what Apple says, the iPad is not a computer replacement device and never will be - unless you only want to consume media or do light work - imo. The Surface Pro can be a full computer - in every sense of the word AND be used as a tablet. At work, I connect my Pro X to an external monitor (try doing that with an iPad and see what happens) and do all the work that is needed in an work setting. At home, I detach the keyboard and use it as a tablet. By far the best of both worlds, but not a comparison to another device that is intended for a different purpose.

Yes, it is clear that an iPad for a pro is complimentary to a Mac, whereas the Surface Pro is a hybrid. Although two devices, when I am earning my living I do not care how many devices I carry, I want to have whatever it takes and convenience is not a word I use. Also, you have not named any performance shortcomings, just a haphazard list of odd perferences.

@@RK-um9tu hi, yes your right as i may buy one myself. I just wish designers would put themselves in user shoes. The perfect size would be 14" with small bezels to get the short side display dimension to 7.75" which would just equal the present ipad pro. And why not just copy the ipad pro pen which is basically perfect (problem is ipad pro cant run programs). The wacom mobile studio pro is nice but too bulky and the pen in my opinion is a little on the large size (Its large matte screen is great and has quadro GPU in the tablet) The size of standard pencils used for hundreds of years is because it is the best size. I am waiting to see if the new mobile studio pro that should come out reduces in size but they too are out of touch. Looks like the best solution will probably be the sp8, however, that pen really bugs me, however, i need to try it before judging to far.

Thanks for the video. Microsoft should give you one of those devices so you can show how it works
For me the 100 grams may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. My surface pro 6 is barely usable as tablet. Any heavier pits it against mighty competition in the laptop space and drops the tablet credentials. I would much rather go to iPad Pro for tablet now and Dell XPS or alike for the laptop part. Surface pro used to cover both in the past but no longer.

I am also disappointed with the weight of the SP8. SP7 is a good balance of weight and performance.

@@gyozakeynsianism Wrong, the SP7 has terrible battery issues that are well documented. Many people report only 4-5 hours. Both my SP7s (i5, i7) also have battery issues. Each has fluctuated from 4 hours to 8 hours depending on the Windows 10 update.

@@RK-um9tu I have an SP7 and my battery life is about what I got from my previous Surface Pro devices, 7-8 hours. It drops if I'm using things like statistical or GIS software.

Lighter than the original iPad?? No... The original iPad was 680gr... over 200gr lighter than this...(cellular was 730gr, we don't know how much will the cellular pro 8 weight). By the way, I am not sold on the weight, that's not a marginal increase.
At virtually 900gr / 2 pounds, the pro 8 is beyond what I consider comfortable enough for tablet use (the previous pro was already at the limit of what was comfortable to use. And when you remove that you have a laptop that is not comfortable on your lap....
Sure it's a much improved device, but when you kill that tablet feature (at least for those that find it too heavy) you are probably better off with a clamshell with pen input... Also I am not confident in the non replaceable battery. My surface 3 battery swell and it killed it. The same happened to my Elite X2 (surface pro clone) but it had a replaceable battery, so I could just replace it and it's still alive. Most standard laptops still have a replaceable battery...
At this point I am not considering the pro 8 anymore but I am still hopeful that they can improve the pro x while still keeping the weight in check....
