This laptop is turning out amazing for a programmer/casual user like me after a week of use: 1. 3:2 ratio is a godsend. 16:9 ratio laptos should not be a thing anymore unless all you do is play games and watch movies. 2. I play a few games which this laptop is handling really well. 3. The keyboard, touchpad and speakers are amazing! 4. This does not get loud at all which I love. 5. It gets slightly warm on heavy load but isnt a problem for me. 6. I really love that I can use it at 120hz and it doesnt kill battery as much as i expected. Its on par with 60hz for my usage. 7. The laptop feels premium with its finish. One of the best looking laptops. Negatives: 1. The screen is nice to use but you have to deal with reflection. 2. Its a little on the heavier side 3. I wish it had a USB A. Whatevers: The screen tilt. Its there is you wanna use it. I dont so I dont care about the hinge or modes or whatever but I like the option of having it. Also, get to learn the features of Windows 11, its pretty cool.
Had a Vaio Multiflip back in the day, basically the prototypical of all the same hinge design following it, it was a fine device, had a screen replacement once and then the motherboard died on me on 2020. So I move on to an UMPC. The ribbon cable that connects the screen with the keyboard is the weakness of the Vaio, it was exposed and sorta deteriorated with time. Even tho it doesn't get touched or anything the hundreds of flipping it went through I think is what does it in. For the flip, I'd say the screen had 3 1/2 years of life in it with daily use (as the screen ribbon is also what gotdone in alongside the mobo for me) so I'd be interested on how these newer devices with the same design fares with time.
Update on this design I hope is for them to have the exact same hinge as Surface Pro's as that mechanism is really not that big right? Probably they do need to change hhe design to allow ribbon cable to pas through between it, but if it can have independent, sturdyhinge that can be prop up in any way you like like Surface Studio's, it'd sure be a nice point for anyone concerned about durability.
There was very very minimal B roll demonstrating the hinge and it’s various modes. We got B roll showing off the trackpad for several seconds but nothing was shown in terms of transforming the laptop. What gives??
Yes, I waited for the demo the whole video, nothing came... very unusual from Lisa. Oh well. Doesn't matter anyway, I still love her reviews and will stay subscribed to her channel until the end of RUclips.
Agreed! When Lisa was talking about it, lots of hand gestures, but no actual video shots. Also in the constructive criticism department, weight is a key specification for a laptop and should appear on the opening “Specifications” screen and not buried 5 minutes later….
As someone who learned the hard way (at the start of work from home) that it is possible to slow cook your thigh over several days, I appreciate that the cooling solution gets a pass! I'll keep that in mind for after I win the lotto!
I have this concern too but for viewing the tent mode looks good and for art I can always get a raked lap tray, which will improve ventilation. It's tempting
Lisa, thanks for all the years of directing me to the right product I need without all the fluff and bias. I always enjoy checking out which fun tshirt you model from time to time. Are you going to review the surface pro 8? I am really struggling because I have a surface 7 that I didn't get a big enough drive for, but otherwise I like for 90% of what I do. It will not effectively run poser though. I'm wondering if a pro 8 with an external gpu is what I need or just bite the bullet and go to the larger studio.
I like this style of screen. I've always been a fan of those older Lenovo, Toshiba, and Fujitsu style tablets with swivel screen because it protects the keyboard, and doesnt block ventilation in the back. I think this is a logical progression to this style of tablet as this SHOULD be more durable than a single point swivel-hinge
Vaio Flip is actually the one they took the design from only difference is that one just could only be flipped into tablet mode, great video tech reviewers like you deserve way more subscribers
This Surface Laptop Studio reminds me of the old SONY VAIO Flip 13/15 laptops from back in the day that I bought after watching your reviews of the thing! (And the smackdown of between the Duo and Flip) It really makes the Flip 15 feel so far ahead of its time.
Interesting, I'm on an SB2 and I'm really excited about making this my next Surface. I've loved the SB line, I bought all of them except the 3. I actually had planned to get the 3 this fall and then I saw this beautiful laptop! I'm gonna get it and I think it'll be a good 3 year laptop
As a former SB user who was looking forward to buying SB4, I am honestly disappointed as well in the Laptop Studio hence now considering other options. Compared to the SB15 you get = less GPU power, less VRAM, less battery, same CPU power, smaller screen, lower resolution, no ports, worse keyboard ergonomics, only 2 hinge angles, and a more limited use case that can't become a tablet. *So now you're paying exactly **_same_** price for a **_massive downgrade._* Idk, this just feels like a rip-off to me.
I like the design, it's easier to go from Laptop mode to Tablet Mode than the Surf Book 1 2 3. Disappointed in the Port Selection. Nice review, thanks! I have a Surface Book 2 15" which I love. Don't need to upgrade yet, but I love this new direction and really loved the feel of it when I tried it out at Best Buy. I like the way you described the power of this computer -- not at the level of a desktop or gaming laptop, but better than a standard computer. That's exactly where I need to be. I need portability for performing (so, no desktop) and need a computer that runs quietly for working with music (so, no gaming laptop). It hits the sweetspot for me -- thanks for an excellent, detailed and nuanced review.
It really does have wide appeal, I like art, but do a bunch of gaming, and compared to my current mid range desktop, it's quite an improvement overall, more than enough for my own needs, and amazingly portable.
Watched the CNET review before this. It's almost unfair how terrible that review is compared to Lisa's. The battery size on this seems like a huge step back compared to the Surface Book. This will really hurt the longevity of the machine. This coming from a person who still rocks the original SB1 and can get like 6 hours on battery still.
Fantastic review as always lisa, you never disappoint. You are probably the only tech reviewer on youtube that actually gets the purpose of a device. Well done Indeed. I really wish I didn't have to wait until next year to get it since I don´t live in the US or Canada.
I know it has not quite been a year since the release of the Surface Laptop Studio, but when will Microsoft upgrade it to the 12th Gen Intel i7 or i9 processor? If you need raw power just get a desktop. You'll be able to use lumion/enscape quite well. I find enscape is quite forgiving with lower spec graphics cards (I have a Dell 9575 which is a 2in1). The usefulness of a convertible comes down to how good it is with quick note taking and doing drawings etc. If this isn't something that is part of your workflow (i.e you prefer hand sketching) just get the gaming laptop.
I'm going to upgrade my surface book 2 to the I7 Nvidia 30:50ti 32GBRAM 2TB SSD as my daily driver. It's literally perfect for my kind of work & what I want/ need to do with it, sure it's pricy but I can get discounts, & sell my SB2 so it will bring the price down allot
I'm happy that the SSD is upgradeable. Is the WIFI card still not replaceable (one of the biggest issues with the surface, when they get old is wifi cards dying)? For that matter, is anything else user upgradeable?

Wouldn't it be better to get the i5 without the 3050ti and use an eGPU if you're looking for max performance? I can't imagine the 3050ti being any good compared to an eGPU. Why spend 500 USD more on the 3050ti version when you can save that and buy an eGPU? Aside from the obvious reason of portability.

Great overview thanks. Can you confirm if that trackpad is Sensel? I heard it was completely built in-house by Microsoft themselves without Sensel technology
Thanks for the review! The pen has me interested if they got rid of the jitter. Yes, it would help if it had more "fixed" angles, especially since some people draw at shallower angles than the 45 degrees they provide.
Lisa hang on in there with your Dequervain's tenosynovitis. Mine took 6 months. getting there. We don't get offered the operation here in the UK straight away. that splint really does help.
Been 4.5 months. I gave in and got a cortisone shot a few weeks back. It's helped somewhat, hoping the follow up shot will get it a little closer to normal. Man, I really did a number on my wrist!
Wearing the splint more or less 24/7 , and do not assume that reduction in pain means it’s back to normal , I’ve been told 6-8 weeks post reduction in pain to actually recover . It keeps flairing up if you start using it normally when pain redices. Mine has flared up again but still not at bad as it use to be. Physio massage helped too. Dr physio( Korean guy who is a physio in Australia ) on RUclips has excercises that helped me! Not even my own physios exercises helpless as as much.
Just got SLS today. Bought from Costco. It came in sealed box and everything looked brand new. Went to turn on and it had to install Windows 11 first before I could set it up. I thought that was a little weird. As I was exploring the computer I tried the WhiteBoard app and when I opened it there were 2 files already there, one from 5/31/2022 and one from 12/6/2019. I'm beginning to think this is not a "brand new" laptop. Any thoughts?
@@duncanwallace7760 the cpu is actually better in the Surface Studio, but the gpu is on par and the book 3 and has better higher screen/digitizer resolution (which I like as an artist, as gives me more precision) . Mind you the SB2 is almost as good as the 3 too.
Hi Lisa. Excellent review. By the way, it's not fair that you compare this to the Zephyrus. You should compare this Surface to the ROG Flow X13, which also has the touchscreen.
Microsoft’s claims: up to 19 hours. I went to the Microsoft Mechanics “review” by their words, and called them out prior to watching any independent reviews. That’s a lie. 8 hours at 60 Hz, now that I believe. Thank you, Lisa!
That’s pretty good tbh, could last your a day doing light work, obviously everybody lies about it so no surprises really, I always watch several reviews to get an average
@@changliu7346 Apple claimed 20 hours for the 13" MacBook Pro, and Linus hit it. Surface and many other Windows manufacturers feel the need to lie. It's time to call them out on it!
I was wondering if the surface laptop studio with the intel i5+ intel iris xe graphics has longer battery life than the i7+ RTX 3050ti due to not having such a powerful GPU ?
The rounded corners on the screen presumably screw up applications where you clickable stuff. 3ds max I ran full screen and was clicking down the all the time.
Great review, as always, Lisa. Regarding the tent mode - my main use for that would be when I have it docked and am using with external monitor and peripherals. I use the Surface Pro Now and am always pulling the keyboard off when I dock because I like the screen closer to me as it is smaller and I want it close for touching and I dont' want the keyboard in the way. Maybe not what MS intended but I think that is the best use of tent mode. I don't think it tilts back far enough in tent mode to use a pen on it well. The Surface Pro is best for tilting back to whatever level is convenient.
Great review thanks Lisa. I may have missed this in the review, but does the pen charge against the base of the laptop when magnetically connected? Love so much about this laptop, esp the fact that it can easily be used ON your lap without blocking any vents. An ACTUAL laptop, yay! If you feel so inclined, I would love to see a showdown between the HP spectre x360 14 and this machine. They have so much in common. Thanks!

I wanted that laptop badly when I was a kid 😅
I'm happy the design idea now lives on with the new surface.

The pen has me interested if they got rid of the jitter. Yes, it would help if it had more "fixed" angles, especially since some people draw at shallower angles than the 45 degrees they provide.
Significantly less jitter, but still some. Not quiet Wacom EMR but getting what I'd call very tolerable.
@@mobiletechreview Hello" who are you
I hope you're doing ok... I love your reviews
I've been waiting for your review! Thank you Lisa 😁
My kidney was starting to get nervous when I was looking at the price for the 2TB model.
Which one would you buy between the the msi creator z16 or the surface laptop studio with graphics card each have their pros and cons.
Lisa thank you for your awesome videos. It’s like a habit for to watch new tech on your Chanel : ) 🙏❤️
Always a delight to watch and learn.
NICE WATCH BAND, Lisa! I wore that one yesterday!
I'm still using my Surface Book 3 just about every day and loving it. I'm sure this one will be great as well.
Still? Its a better specced machine than this one.
@@jackjude Maybe mine is a 2 then, I cant remember, but its awesome.
@@duncanwallace7760 the cpu is actually better in the Surface Studio, but the gpu is on par and the book 3 and has better higher screen/digitizer resolution (which I like as an artist, as gives me more precision) . Mind you the SB2 is almost as good as the 3 too.
@@jackjude They are pretty amazing laptops. I hope Microsoft keeps making cutting edge stuff!
This is an excellent review. Thank you Lisa!
Please consider explaining battery replacement for all portable devices in future videos.
19hrs if you turn it off for 19hrs haha
That’s pretty good tbh, could last your a day doing light work, obviously everybody lies about it so no surprises really, I always watch several reviews to get an average
If you’re web browsing with the GPU disabled and have the brightness on 50% then maybe.
@@changliu7346 Apple claimed 20 hours for the 13" MacBook Pro, and Linus hit it. Surface and many other Windows manufacturers feel the need to lie. It's time to call them out on it!
@@djsnowpdx with caveats abound, of course - but of course we dont do that for others.
How does this new Surface compares with the Acer Swift 316 since they both use the same chipsets
looking at getting this for my BF and think we are sold. great video thank you!!
*ahem* 🤓 akshully, an SLS is a Mercedes model 🤓
I was wondering if the surface laptop studio with the intel i5+ intel iris xe graphics has longer battery life than the i7+ RTX 3050ti due to not having such a powerful GPU ?
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
I'm definitely missing the Surface Book detachability as no one else copied that idea. This is basically Microsoft's HP Spectre Folio.
Really clear explanations and demonstration of pros and cons. Thank you.
The rounded corners on the screen presumably screw up applications where you clickable stuff. 3ds max I ran full screen and was clicking down the all the time.
Great Review, this channel excels in many many ways.
As always great T-shirt and review
Great review as always Lisa.
Thanks for another thoughtful and helpful review!
Thanks!
"No sd-slot"? It seems to be on the right side. And it is said to be able to expand the ssd-capacity?
Thats not an sd slot, its the “surface connector” proprietary charger.
Hey Microsoft why don't you make the bezels thicker? I can barely see them right now.
I don't know why MS and others aren't using AMD processors, especially for production models.
I think Thunderbolt 3 or 4 is probably the problem. Hopefully the new AMD with USB4 would have more Ryzen later.
@@mini9503 Thunderbolt is very helpful when you want to use multiple monitors at high resolution and 60 Hz. USB C alt display is not as seamless.
@@mini9503 I can't speak for other companies, but mine has moved everyone to USB C thunderbolt dock with the new Dell laptops and workstations.
So, there's no kickstand if you want to draw on it in laptop mode to keep the screen from folding back?
It's not a tablet, so no kickstand. The laptop display, goes back and stops at about 120 degrees, so there's your drawing position in laptop mode.
@@mobiletechreview Ah. Interesting. Looking forward to trying it out. Great review!
