Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio Review

- Опубликовано: 8 окт 2021
- A new design from Microsoft in the Surface line for 2021! The Surface Laptop Studio effectively replaces the Surface Book line as MS’ convertible laptop line for creatives. It has a 14.4” IPS 120Hz pull-forward display design that’s uncommon but not unique. The design makes it easy to switch from laptop to tablet and tent modes. It runs Windows 11 Home on 35 watt Intel quad core i5 and i7 CPUs, putting it in between an Ultrabook and mobile workstation or gaming laptop in terms of performance. The Core i7 has NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti dedicated graphics. The laptop is available with 16/32GB RAM, up to a 2TB SSD and has Thunderbolt 4. It’s compatible with the new Surface Slim Pen 2 (sold separately) and the pen magnetically attaches to the laptop and charges. The pen has haptics for a more pen on paper feel, and it has a haptic Precision trackpad.

There're tech RUclipsr's with twice the budget producing reviews in half the time as Lisa. Yet whenever a new piece of tech comes out, whose review are we all most excited to see? Lisa Gade's, that's whose. And this review just reminded me why.
If you're thinking lmg then i would say Anthony would be similar.
for me aswell. i always trust Lisa's reviews. She has the right amount of criticism while staying polite to the manufacturers.
Absolutely, if Lisa's reviewed it, then I've got a go to review to watch first.
Honestly this channel has some of the best reviews you can find on RUclips. So down to earth and actually talks about features I want to know about and shows the actual product. Keep it up!!
"Flippy-floppy"... I wish you'd stop bamboozling us with technical jargon Lisa... Great review, as always!
You're the ONLY reviewer who acknowledges that this design IS NOT new. Thank you for this.
Consistent - straight, true and comprehensive - yet always respectful of the work the manufacturers do. Your reviews are a great contribution to our work and careers.
Been watching your reviews for 10 years! Good stuff!
finally! was looking forward to it. Great video, waiting for your review on the Duo 2
When she brought up the vaio flip I was like “finally someone remembers that device” haha what a veteran 😄
Me too. Because I watched it on this channel just six months ago, looking for a second hand premium laptop
Stop got my Vaio Z Flip from 5 years back when it just came out! Still works and is cool. It’s design got jacked twice, this far.
I wanted that laptop badly when I was a kid 😅
I'm happy the design idea now lives on with the new surface.
yes
Omg same. I was so irritated reading other tech blogs reviewing this laptop and not bringing up the Vaio Flip as the main design inspiration.
This is, by far, the most descriptive and informative review I've seen. Thanks so much.
Been a bit since I watched one of your videos. Great to see that you are still the best in the biz. Thanks for the great content.
I have been waiting for this video since the surface laptop studio was announced! Thank you! Most valuable review for this device.
I love the fact that you mentioned the heat fan on the sides not at the bottom 👍 enjoyable review for me
I ordered one that lands Tuesday…very excited. Great review here as usual Lisa. I think they nailed this one
How's it working out?
I appreciate this review. Your review of the HP spectre back in 2017 help me decide on that unit. Still have it and works great!
Same here!
Vaio Flip is actually the one they took the design from only difference is that one just could only be flipped into tablet mode, great video tech reviewers like you deserve way more subscribers
I forgot how much I love your reviews! Your voice is so pleasant!
This Surface Laptop Studio reminds me of the old SONY VAIO Flip 13/15 laptops from back in the day that I bought after watching your reviews of the thing! (And the smackdown of between the Duo and Flip)
It really makes the Flip 15 feel so far ahead of its time.
Lisa thank you for your awesome videos. It’s like a habit for to watch new tech on your Chanel : ) 🙏❤️
Lisa, thanks for all the years of directing me to the right product I need without all the fluff and bias. I always enjoy checking out which fun tshirt you model from time to time. Are you going to review the surface pro 8? I am really struggling because I have a surface 7 that I didn't get a big enough drive for, but otherwise I like for 90% of what I do. It will not effectively run poser though. I'm wondering if a pro 8 with an external gpu is what I need or just bite the bullet and go to the larger studio.
Great review. I too tried to make the SB2 my only machine years ago. Going to give it another go with the Laptop Studio. So far very happy with it.
Same...I had every SB model and they were just too darn quirky compared to the Laptop Studio...loving mine so far.
You’re close to 1 million!!! Go Lisa :)!!! Been watching you for over 5 years now!
I always enjoy watching your videos Lisa. Keep up the great work!
Best laptop reviewer if you ask me...
Just discovered you. Love the reviews! This was the choice of work laptop I went with for my new job.
Love your reviews Lisa. This was another excellent one.
After watching this review, I feel like the other reviewers for this same device were like trying to hammer a nail with a screwdriver. So, thank you.
I've been waiting for your review! Thank you Lisa 😁
Your reviews are always the best out there!
The best review on this I have seen, thank you!
Awesome review! I do think review should do some comparison so that people know better about the overall feeling of this product and it also makes more sense as we are choosing one product among a few models.
Great Job!
It looks so sleek. Lord have mercy. You drew that? Dang, awesome skills.
You're the GOAT of reviewers! Thanks!
Fantastic review as always lisa, you never disappoint. You are probably the only tech reviewer on youtube that actually gets the purpose of a device. Well done Indeed. I really wish I didn't have to wait until next year to get it since I don´t live in the US or Canada.
Nice review, thanks! I have a Surface Book 2 15" which I love. Don't need to upgrade yet, but I love this new direction and really loved the feel of it when I tried it out at Best Buy.
I like the way you described the power of this computer -- not at the level of a desktop or gaming laptop, but better than a standard computer. That's exactly where I need to be. I need portability for performing (so, no desktop) and need a computer that runs quietly for working with music (so, no gaming laptop). It hits the sweetspot for me -- thanks for an excellent, detailed and nuanced review.
It really does have wide appeal, I like art, but do a bunch of gaming, and compared to my current mid range desktop, it's quite an improvement overall, more than enough for my own needs, and amazingly portable.
The best review yet, thanks Lisa!
You got my respect once more when you mentioned the VAIO laptop formfactor. RIP Sony!
Really clear explanations and demonstration of pros and cons. Thank you.
Great review, as always, Lisa. Regarding the tent mode - my main use for that would be when I have it docked and am using with external monitor and peripherals. I use the Surface Pro Now and am always pulling the keyboard off when I dock because I like the screen closer to me as it is smaller and I want it close for touching and I dont' want the keyboard in the way. Maybe not what MS intended but I think that is the best use of tent mode. I don't think it tilts back far enough in tent mode to use a pen on it well. The Surface Pro is best for tilting back to whatever level is convenient.
Thanks for your review. I appreciate your thoughts. I am considering this device. Blessings on your day!
So nice to hearing you !! 🙂🙂
This is an excellent review. Thank you Lisa!
Superb review, as always. Thank you, it's very much appreciated.
A clear useful review with no nonsense. Great!
Great Review, this channel excels in many many ways.
Always a delight to watch and learn.
I like this style of screen. I've always been a fan of those older Lenovo, Toshiba, and Fujitsu style tablets with swivel screen because it protects the keyboard, and doesnt block ventilation in the back.
I think this is a logical progression to this style of tablet as this SHOULD be more durable than a single point swivel-hinge
Thanks for another thoughtful and helpful review!
NICE WATCH BAND, Lisa! I wore that one yesterday!
Thank for the amazing review !!
I've been watching this channel for years and I cannot believe I wasn't subscribed yet....
Great review as always Lisa.
I love your reviews.
The legend's review.
The active white balance adjustment of your camera is going crazy in this video
Your review video is always awesome! If only I had a grandma who owns surface studio laptop and can lend me one... 😔
Hi Lisa. Excellent review. By the way, it's not fair that you compare this to the Zephyrus. You should compare this Surface to the ROG Flow X13, which also has the touchscreen.
this is a better approach to a hybrid design than the old surface book
All respect for you
Review the frame work lap top! Love your stuff
As always great T-shirt and review
Had a Vaio Multiflip back in the day, basically the prototypical of all the same hinge design following it, it was a fine device, had a screen replacement once and then the motherboard died on me on 2020. So I move on to an UMPC.
The ribbon cable that connects the screen with the keyboard is the weakness of the Vaio, it was exposed and sorta deteriorated with time. Even tho it doesn't get touched or anything the hundreds of flipping it went through I think is what does it in. For the flip, I'd say the screen had 3 1/2 years of life in it with daily use (as the screen ribbon is also what gotdone in alongside the mobo for me) so I'd be interested on how these newer devices with the same design fares with time.
Update on this design I hope is for them to have the exact same hinge as Surface Pro's as that mechanism is really not that big right? Probably they do need to change hhe design to allow ribbon cable to pas through between it, but if it can have independent, sturdyhinge that can be prop up in any way you like like Surface Studio's, it'd sure be a nice point for anyone concerned about durability.
This laptop is turning out amazing for a programmer/casual user like me after a week of use:
1. 3:2 ratio is a godsend.
16:9 ratio laptos should not be a thing anymore unless all you do is play games and watch movies.
2. I play a few games which this laptop is handling really well.
3. The keyboard, touchpad and speakers are amazing!
4. This does not get loud at all which I love.
5. It gets slightly warm on heavy load but isnt a problem for me.
6. I really love that I can use it at 120hz and it doesnt kill battery as much as i expected. Its on par with 60hz for my usage.
7. The laptop feels premium with its finish. One of the best looking laptops.
Negatives:
1. The screen is nice to use but you have to deal with reflection.
2. Its a little on the heavier side
3. I wish it had a USB A.
Whatevers:
The screen tilt. Its there is you wanna use it. I dont so I dont care about the hinge or modes or whatever but I like the option of having it.
Also, get to learn the features of Windows 11, its pretty cool.
How's gaming on it? Can it do VR?
@Denis Nah. you can keep the function key on (like caps lock) when you are coding (its a nice feature on SLS). It doesnt need to be a combination.
@@enrac No idea. Havent tried that.
I'd prefer 16:10
looking at getting this for my BF and think we are sold. great video thank you!!
Radical, provocative design
Needed to watch this after seeing the CNET review
Once it hits the UK I'm on that for sure 😁 Always a pleasure watching your reviews
Oh you’re gonna love it. I got mine Friday…. It’s pretty damn amazing. Coming from a MacBook.
@@conwilcon967 really? I have a 2015 MacBook Pro and have been contemplating in upgrading to this guy.
@@spar10shs DO IT. You will love it. If not, 60 day return policy from Microsoft!
You will also find they NAILEEEDDDD the trackpad
@@conwilcon967 thank you brother!
Esta revista de dispositivis es excelente, muy informativa y excelentes puntos de vista.
As someone who learned the hard way (at the start of work from home) that it is possible to slow cook your thigh over several days, I appreciate that the cooling solution gets a pass! I'll keep that in mind for after I win the lotto!
I have this concern too but for viewing the tent mode looks good and for art I can always get a raked lap tray, which will improve ventilation. It's tempting
Please consider explaining battery replacement for all portable devices in future videos.
Thanks for the review!
The pen has me interested if they got rid of the jitter. Yes, it would help if it had more "fixed" angles, especially since some people draw at shallower angles than the 45 degrees they provide.
Significantly less jitter, but still some. Not quiet Wacom EMR but getting what I'd call very tolerable.
@@mobiletechreview Hello" who are you
I hope you're doing ok... I love your reviews
Fantastic review
great review!
I just bought one. This is a cool device!
Is anyone seeing only the 360p option??
Edit: nvm, working now. I guess youtube takes a while to upload all the resolutions?
You are wearing a Chinese dragon shirt with traditional calligraphy on… such a good taste of you on both cloth and tech
Great review thanks Lisa. I may have missed this in the review, but does the pen charge against the base of the laptop when magnetically connected? Love so much about this laptop, esp the fact that it can easily be used ON your lap without blocking any vents. An ACTUAL laptop, yay!
If you feel so inclined, I would love to see a showdown between the HP spectre x360 14 and this machine. They have so much in common. Thanks!
A really good review, unknowingly or otherwise, you answered all my questions. I order a SP8 this morning, but now I am gonna cancel it and get this one. Thanks a lot!
I like the design, it's easier to go from Laptop mode to Tablet Mode than the Surf Book 1 2 3. Disappointed in the Port Selection. Would have liked to see 1 USB A Port, 1TB4 Port & 1 Full SD Card Slot . Great Review Lisa, I like how you Say the Pros & Cons of what you Review. Your Objectiveness is a key part of your Review.
nah lets be done with USB A but a micro sd slot would be nice.
I want a SD card slot but we need to get rid of the USB type A by now.
@@mini9503 meh if they include a HDMI to USB C/thunderport 4 dongle or even better HDMI to Thunderport 4 would be better
Yah more usb c is better
Its a downgrade on the surface book
That thing is huge!
Why is no one talking about this machine bring up the Vaio Z-Flip? It's literally the exact same hinge.
Always the best, Lisa
Looking forward to your thoughts on the Surface Pro 8
I'm still using my Surface Book 3 just about every day and loving it. I'm sure this one will be great as well.
Still? Its a better specced machine than this one.
@@jackjude Maybe mine is a 2 then, I cant remember, but its awesome.
@@duncanwallace7760 the cpu is actually better in the Surface Studio, but the gpu is on par and the book 3 and has better higher screen/digitizer resolution (which I like as an artist, as gives me more precision) . Mind you the SB2 is almost as good as the 3 too.
@@jackjude They are pretty amazing laptops. I hope Microsoft keeps making cutting edge stuff!
Impressive review. Are You still using it? What is Your opinion of this formidable device today? Did the software updates over time made de experience even better? Would the difference between the software state of Surface Studio Laptop at the time of this review and today be worth a second review of the Surface Laptop Studio? What changes would you love to see in version 2?
BEAUTIFUL LAPTOP.
Wish these had the 35W Ryzen CPUs instead. Those go up to *eight* cores.
marvelous done video ma'am u got a sub here
Cool, I think they did great but will do even better on gen 2
Beautiful and powerful laptop. I love it ❤❤
Great overview thanks. Can you confirm if that trackpad is Sensel? I heard it was completely built in-house by Microsoft themselves without Sensel technology
Still considering the SLS. Greatest Laptop design in the entire market. The current deals are nice. Lake of display capability for the money and the process power and the battery life are all negatives so still looking.
Which one would you buy between the the msi creator z16 or the surface laptop studio with graphics card each have their pros and cons.
Maybe I'll get one of these in a couple of years. Still doing fine with my Surface Book 2.
Do you have issues with mouse stuttering? I have the SB2 and I hate it because it always has issues 😒
Same. I feel like that bottom slab will be curved edged instead of what it is now. Its doesn't look great to be on a lap
Interesting, I'm on an SB2 and I'm really excited about making this my next Surface. I've loved the SB line, I bought all of them except the 3. I actually had planned to get the 3 this fall and then I saw this beautiful laptop! I'm gonna get it and I think it'll be a good 3 year laptop
@@markIRL I'm disappointed. Always wanted to enter the surface book line, but this feels like a step backwards for the same price.
As a former SB user who was looking forward to buying SB4, I am honestly disappointed as well in the Laptop Studio hence now considering other options.
Compared to the SB15 you get = less GPU power, less VRAM, less battery, same CPU power, smaller screen, lower resolution, no ports, worse keyboard ergonomics, only 2 hinge angles, and a more limited use case that can't become a tablet. *So now you're paying exactly **_same_** price for a **_massive downgrade._* Idk, this just feels like a rip-off to me.
Hi Lisa, could you please make a comparison review of dell precision 7760 and 7770? Thank you!
I wish it was a larger screen, maybe 17-18 inch. Then it can really be a canvas for drawing
I've been wondering what Lisa's take on this would be 😍
If possible, please also link where you get the shirts you wear in your videos!
Nice T-Shirt !
Lisa hang on in there with your Dequervain's tenosynovitis. Mine took 6 months. getting there. We don't get offered the operation here in the UK straight away. that splint really does help.
Been 4.5 months. I gave in and got a cortisone shot a few weeks back. It's helped somewhat, hoping the follow up shot will get it a little closer to normal. Man, I really did a number on my wrist!
Wearing the splint more or less 24/7 , and do not assume that reduction in pain means it’s back to normal , I’ve been told 6-8 weeks post reduction in pain to actually recover . It keeps flairing up if you start using it normally when pain redices. Mine has flared up again but still not at bad as it use to be. Physio massage helped too. Dr physio( Korean guy who is a physio in Australia ) on RUclips has excercises that helped me! Not even my own physios exercises helpless as as much.
I had a very tough choice between this and the SP8. In the end I went with the SP8 because I wasn't the biggest fan of the big hump on the bottom of the studio!
You'll still have to deal with the big hump on the bottom of the type cover.
Mine keeps shutting off and coming back on. How can I disconnect the battery ?
