I recently purchased this device and I have to say that this is very likely going to become my favorite "laptop" ever. It's just so solid in every possible way. Stage mode, by the way, I usually don't mind just using the touch keyboard if I need to in this mode by using the split screen keyboard design.
Don't worry, I have the slight misalignment in the display hinge backing, too. I've learned to put it out of my mind, even thought the first few days I had it I kind of obsessed over it, as well as the rounded corners on the display.
The more I used this device in my life, though, those OCD type things just kind of faded away. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is annoyed that they made it more difficult in Windows 11 to switch performance modes! Why, Microsoft, why?!
Great review, first-time watcher here. Subbed!

Great review! Thank you! I just went from the Surface Book 2 i7 16GB 13" to the Surface Laptop Studio i7 32GB. Like you, I loved the Surface Book. But as you said, the 'attach' and 'detach' was always funky...and for me and many others, the Nvidia GPU in the main chassis would disappear sometimes, and all you'd have is the GPU in the tablet part of the machine. Not good! A complex 'detach and re-attach' would usually get it back - but not always. No such issues, of course, with the Laptop Studio. This is the best PC I've ever had, and it constantly amazes me with its top-quality display, build, speed and form factor. Thanks again for the best review I've seen!

I'm upgrading my surface book 2 as well, my first move was to go straight to the 3 2TB edition, but it was sold out, and didn't feel like waiting, so I ordered the studio. Since then the 2TB Book 3 has come back into stock, and I'm honestly torn as to what to do. What do you prefer with the studio that you loved on the book?
The studio seems lighter which is good, the spot for the pen is 100x better, but no USB ports and no SD card make me a little concerned. Sure I wouldn't need the extra storage for everyday use, but for file transfers, for putting something on a drive for a colleague/classmate....things like that it seems like a less efficient option to have to get the flash drives that go into USB C, or using an SD card with a USB C adapter.
plus no rear camera means when I want to record meetings I would have to go to a different device than the studio.
But it looks great, is more powerful, more practical (I can list on one hand the times i have taken the tablet off the base, as it is usually temperamental).
But I'm not sure how the trade-offs will work in real-world practice. Did you have any of those issues? or other issues?

I use the preview mode all the time. I rather like that it covers the keyboard and leaves the touchpad showing. Though I do agree with you that they should also have the tilt that covers the touchpad as well. that is a really useful position. So far I am loving this machine. it is a beauty. I switched to this because I want to run music software. the preview mode is GREAT for music software because you don't need a keyboard but you need the trackpad for being much more exact than a finger. it is perfect for music.

So losing Micro SD is not really a problem, also this Surface storage can be upgraded while Macbook pro always locked crap because typical craple wont allow you to repair their products even though you own it.

I used an Acer with a similar type of 2x1 design for yeaaars, it was great! But the thing for me was that both of the hinges could hold their positions. This let me bring the display slightly closer to me, floating above the keyboard. I used that literally all the time.
The Surface Studio can't do that, unfortunately, because the hinge on the back of the display doesn't hold its position. However, to have the display float above the keyboard in the Acers, they needed to push the keyboard closer to the front, shrinking the trackpad. Microsoft chose the big trackpad, but I think I personally would have chosen the floating display.

About the whole rounded edge thing. So if you look at a the corners of a open program in Windows 11 in windowed mode, the edges are rounded off, and not square like in Windows 10. So when you go full screen, those rounded edge fit perfectly in the rounded corners.

Great review! I've been considering this device. I do a lot of heavy design, motion graphics, and video editing with Adobe products and currently have an HP Spectre 360 (from 2017). It just can't handle most of that anymore. I like the form factor to be able to draw or do masking right on the screen and with a regular 2-in-1 you have to flip it over and if you have it plugged in you have to mess with the cables, so the idea of just because to put the screen down without doing some weird acrobatics with the whole device really appeals to me. My biggest concern is if the processing power and GPU (for the higher spec version of course) could handle a lot of After Effects animation and 3D motion graphics.

I second Keys' question. I'm in the exact same predicament. I enjoy doing fairly hefty animations in Adobe After Effects quite frequently. And I used to be a video editor, so I do that every now and then. So handling the animation and video editing is my concern as well. The other thing I'm not sure how much it should matter is the screen res. They seem pretty close, so not sure how much I would notice. I'm currently at 1080 HD.
I'm between this Surface Laptop Studio and the new HP Spectre x360, so I would love to hear your thoughts. I would also be going for the higher specs Surface (32GB RAM/1TB Storage) or the higher OLED specs Spectre (32GB RAM/2TB Storage).
Hope to hear back from you!

Yeah the click thing is a common issue for most laptops. If you type, you can't left click for a fraction of a second with touchpads. It's just a windows feature and you really notice it when you game but don't have an external mouse plugged in. You have to go into the touchpad settings and change the touch sensitivity to most sensitive. Don't ask why but that's just what fixes it using google to find it, registry hacks did not work for me. For me that's what worked. Did not make much sense to me considering how does making the touch pad more sensitive changing the click delay when using the internal keyboard at the same time. Maybe their wording is just wrong for explaining the setting idk.

Great review Sara! This computer is cool. But as amazing as Microsoft's engineering can be, it's like they always miss the mark in enough minuet areas to make the laptop just not a good purchase. All the amazing things about this Surface Studio yet still no reason why I'd replace my XPS 15 7590 with it. idk, maybe it's just me and I'll always need ports haha.

Never had the issues you discussed about the surface book... IMO this is flimsy compared to the surface book and aesthetics of this unit leaves a lot to be desired.. but hey thats me:)

For your USB A issue you more than likely have these, however I love the nonda USB C to USB Adapter(2 Pack) I purchased on Amazon.

I also wish the easel mode had more positions. I mean, why do you need the touchpad when you're using it in tablet mode? The whole touch screen can do that. But, still, this looks great to me.

I have this and love it. It's perfect for me (business mostly, major pen use, occasionally edit a video). Definitely more money than I wanted to spend though (i7, 32gb RAM, 1gb SSD)

It’s a great device, one of the best laptops in the pc market for artists and developers in my opinion that has some gaming you can do it. The surface laptop 5 is very nice, but I went with this one for the drawing experience and dedicated GPU

I bought one (low end model) and it's my first digitizer. I waited for years to finally make the leap. The drawing experience was amazing on the iPad pro for me. When I heard this had the 120hz refresh I was like now is my time because I hate apple. I haven't learned how to work in Photoshop just yet (without a keyboard). To be honest. I hate the experience so far. Wish I had just bought the iPad for Adobe fresco. I'm going to try and tough through it and find how to use Photoshop without access to "keys." It is a bit laggy too. I feel like the i7 video card is worth the extra $500. Seriously consider it. Otherwise it's a great laptop for college.

For the Same price, the Rog flow x16 or even the new X13 can be good alternitives, yeah, u cann not fold them so swift. But they're much more powerful and even have the better Display.

My daughter is planning to buy this soon. She is getting the one with the i7 Processor 1 TB of Storage, she is a professor, she teaches C++, Java Script, quite a bit of programming. She wants the Surface Laptop Studio: Below are the specs.
    $2,699.99
    Intel Core i7
    32GB RAM
    1TB SSD
    NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™
With MS Office 365 for 6 Computers, $3,048.47...KA CHING!!! LOTTA MULA!!! She needs it. Are there any Laptops that are better and/or cost less money?

as a surface book 2 user i think this new format is a huge step back. they got rid of the most innovative feature, the one i use always to work on illustrations, detachable screen display.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If you go to college and you have to take notes for a class, you're definitely going to want access to the computer. All those other modes don't help if you have to take detailed notes for a class.

It is fancy, but for the price or less, other laptops will give you an 11th Gen I7 with 8 cores vs the Surface 4 cores; which would render much faster. But they usually aren’t that cool as this device in terms of form factor. If you need a convertible laptop, and ability to take notes on tablet form, the Surface is great. If you want more horse power for your dollars, there is a Dell XPS 15 (as an example) which is $400 less and the 8 cores will run circles around the Surface.

I think this Form Factor is an Improvement from the Surf Book Fulcorm Hinge Design. However, the Surf Laptop Studio is a bit Pricey At $1600 Starting Point. On another Note, Good Objective Review Miss Peachy.

    1. i am bummed about the USB A too, and by the people also. sure you want it to be future proof, but what about all those hard disks lying around which have usb a? should i just throw them away?
    2. win 11 really has made some simple things more complex- like you can't change performance mode quickly, you can't create calendar events from taskbar quickly, you cant drag and drop files, and so on. for a productivity and creativity focused OS update, this was many steps backward.

"If you are watching content, you want access to the keyboard." No, not with a touchscreen. Here with my non-touchscreen laptop I of course need my keys to pause, skip forwards or backwards and stuff. But with a touchscreen closer to me (the stage mode) so I can more easily reach it like a tablet, I can just use my finger to tap on the thumbnails to open them, grab the knob and skip forwards or backwards, or tap the middle to pause/play.
And if the onscreen-keyboard was/will be good (maybe in the future or is there maybe an external program to improve that? Microsoft what are you doing, finally make the on-screen keyboard pop up EVERY time I tap an input field, that's not so difficult and all the hardware abilities are there, so why not just improve the software so that it works great? It's such a bummer and I just don't get it.) I could just use that one for e.g. searching a video in the search bar.
And, often I lie on my side and then I have to sit up to write a comment and then lie down again with my traditional laptop. Maybe my next one really should be one with a touchscreen. Just using the onscreen keyboard then would be way more comfortable. (Just lay down on your side once and try to use a laptop keyboard, it's not nice).
