The charcoal filter is the biggest restriction inside the intake track. HunterTuned on youtube dynoed a BRZ without the charcoal filter first and made good gains. He then installed a K&N drop in filter and it almost made no difference. My personal preference is to keep the paper filter. I know car enthusiasts will hate my opinion but they just work. Once they get too dirty, you just buy a new one, throw the old one in the trash, clean the airbox with a vacuum or compressed air and put the new one in. That's it, done. No need to clean your reusable "lifetime" filter that everyone forgets to clean anyways.
There is definitely something to be said about a quick and easy sway of cheap paper filters. Nothing wrong with that! Especially if you don't like cleaning/oiling the K&N filter.
Did these two mods as well as removing the charcoal filter and man... I can really tell a difference. The throttle feels much better at the low end and it seemed to wake the car up a bit. I am just going to purchase an OEM front air box (80 USD) in case I want to add it back or I have to take my car in for warranty.
There’s been some dyno tests with the charcoal filter removed that show gains up, granted it’s pretty easy to fudge dyno numbers but it makes sense. Guess it would really come down to how sticky your state is on emissions
You missed the point completely. These type of intake mods are not designed to increase intake sounds or to increase HP. IMO they are designed to increase air flow into the engine which in turn will make throttle response better and allow whatever power the engine can make, to be accessible quicker. Any time you can get air into and out of the engine in larger volume and more efficiently, the better your engine will perform. Sound is secondary.
Did you have dyno results? I tried Perrin intake, Grimmspeed intake, and stock with an aftermarket air filter on my 2017 BRZ. The stock with filter was actually the best on the dyno. Grimmspeed actually made less power 😯
@@TheBTRGarage noticed no difference with k/n, spun around accidentally first time pulling out of gas station with evolution. Surprising difference for me.
@@drphil4209 Interesting. I don't notice anything on butt dyno with the K&N either, but the real dyno did show it was the best of the 3 I dyno'd (basically the stock air box, filter doesn't do anything). It was all within standard deviation though so nothing significant. I'll have to check out the Evolution.
@@TheBTRGarage i believe it to be worth a shot, with reasonable expectations of course. I appreciate the you sharing your information, I've been watching along as I've made my own purchases 👊
Air filters and intakes do not ad power lol. Factory set-up will support alot more than youl every throw at it unless you put a turbo on and another 75 hp or more. Tuning the compter, adding camshaft, and increasing compression will ad power
Much better to just replace the OEM battery with a 3-4lbs lithium battery. Moving it to the trunk is a pain, plus you add weight with several feet of heavy battery cable.
@TheBTRGarage Then why did you make a video action looking for that sound then. I just ordered mine today because of this I'll show you a real clip bro.. You want to dress up your engine bay that didn't work Neither... When you do get one you will thank me have a nice day..
I think you're confused. I made a video that shows how to install the Grimmspeed intake tube and an air filter, that's it. I made an observation that it did not change intake sound. If you just want more sick intake sounds, then by all means go get your $400 sound box, bro.
If you're looking for more power, probably not. If you're looking to clean up the engine bay and have a single, re-usable air filter, then I think it is 👍

I did this exact set up. Drive it a little you’ll notice intake noises in different situations.

Got suckered into these as well. We'll see on next canyon run if any extra power or noise ...
The K&N doesn't add any HP or torque, a guy on RUclips did a before and after. Deleting the screen behind the filter had a small effect.
Yea I know, as mentioned in the video mostly get it for the long life.
Removing the charcoal filter might let more air through at the top end? Im on the fence about getting the K&N air box for the extra induction noise.
I removed the charcoal filter and I could tell the difference right away.
I dunno, I thought about it. Then watched the Engineering Explained video and wasn't convinced it would be worth it.

Wut?
Too much to process at one time? Apologies, I didn’t realize. ☮️
Injen "Evolution" intake made an impressive improvement on my gen 1 brz

@@TheBTRGarage butt dyno only, evolution goes into front bumper like oem but with a cone filter in a big box. I love it for my n/a on e-85

Why not add the intake system inatead.

You're right. And never once in the video is it stated, or implied, that these parts ad power. So, not sure what you are going on about.
What do you think about moving the battery to the trunk for weight balance

Does this void Toyota warranty?
It shouldn't be an issue. But, I also can't speak for all dealerships and their warranty support approach.
What K+N part number for 86/BRZ
That's a waste of time, bro, you could of had K&n typhoon intake with some nice sound..
Not interested in spending $400+ for nice sound and negligible performance gains.

all good bubs
sounds like is not worth the money

Unfortunately, money down the drain... it's Dyno proven that there is no significant HP gain...
