I have some new crow foot tools and want to send them to you to test them out for an unbiased test do you have a mailing address so I can ship them to Project Farm, please.
I noticed it too. But you can see it more on other guys here on yt. Try the I like to make stuff Channal. 3 years back and now. But keep it up here I love your vids
Another great test. Please do a cutoff wheel comparison. I find there is a big difference. Also the. Metal cutting diamond cutoff for 4 1/2 “ grinders. Good job. On this video excellent testing procedure.
@@ironken1796 I am a welder/fitter by trade, ive used just about every single brand available. 3M is fairly expensive but far superior to other brands. its like the diablo Sawzall blade of grinding wheels lol.
Thank you very much! I do the best I can. If I mess up, a lot of people will make a poor buying decision....not good. So, I really try hard to get it right and consult others for advice when needed. Thanks again.
meanwhile companies hire """"companies"""" and "certified professionals" to do these kind of test rigs, and they overbuild them to get specific numbers under specific circumstances, the test becomes too sterile and the units are an absolute clean lab test scenario that customers will never obtain half of. :(
We all need to take a minute and appreciate the complex work he puts into these Rube Goldberg machines so people like us don’t get ripped off…😂 Thanks man, words can’t even describe how much I love this channel and how far it’s came along.
In my opinion the metal removal rate is king !!! Tool life and tool price also factor in but removal rate is direct related to cost ! Labor cost out on a job, doing a job in extreme cold or extreme hot outdoors ... with 20+ years of welding and fabrication background my priorities are 1) metal removal rate 2) surface finish As long as the tool life is not horrible it does not really matter how good it really is. And tool cost is very easily offset with labor savings ..... Just my point of view.
Project Farm i really and truly appreciate you taking the time to read all the comments !!!! I do that too snd my channel is MUCH smaller than yours so i can just barely imagine .... ANYWAYS i think that when the disc starts to wear the engagement surface of the disc increases. Theoretically if your grinder has enough wattage the material removal rate should increase as the test goes on. So lets say minutes 4-6 and 7-9 should have higher material removal rates as 1-3.... also when you do those tests you should always let the grinder cool back down to room temperature to eliminate that variable. No matter how weak or powerful your grinder is or how fast it turns for max speed - that “should not matter” because it was the same for all disks - BUT some disc might perform better than others at higher or lower speeds and with more or less pressure depending on “how aggressive” they cut. But truthfully that would be a whole another test all by itself and more a grinder test then a disc test.
i understand your point of view, but for the typical guy tryna do some projects in the garage labour rate isnt really a thing and alot of people make close to minimum wage where a welder charges himself out at 50-100$ an hour plus costs, i typically go with what i enjoy using the best vs cost, buy milwuakee tools cause i enjoy them more then the cheapos, i only use 11/12amp grinders not 10$ 5 amp HF ones because i wanna lean on them without the smoke flying, but i like to cheap out where possible especially in consumables
I could agree except for one thing. I really hate replacing wheels. I used some old harbor freight ones when I was fabricating some suspension components. I was going through a wheel every 5 minutes. That got old really fast.
@@franskamstra2728 YEAH ! I worked in a fab shop for 5 years...lots of carbon steel plate (1/4" up to 2") and plenty of stainless...Klingspor was used most all the time, not real aggressive, but long lasting and good price. also the belts and discs for sanding..!
Klingspor by the case XD I just like them because they come to me lol

Let us remember that high removal rate gets big jobs done more quickly, but slow rate allows grinds or cuts to be more controllable. Perhaps different tools for different jobs.
High removal rate allows for big jobs to get done quickly, AND it allows you to control how much material is taken off efficiently through the use of pressure.
I'm LOVING these tests involving Harbor Freight items because they're the best to compare with to decide if you're really getting the best bang for your buck.
@@ProjectFarm Could you do angle grinder disc paint stripping & rust stripping discs? - The abrasive ones that have those big irregular holes in them that people to strip paint/rust.
Should've included a "value" calculation. For example, if a wheel is 1KG, and it lost 1g of material to remove 40g of material, that means 40000g of material it can remove total, divided by the money cost 10 dollars, equals 4000g/dollar, or 40g/cent value removal. It's more fun to grade consummables by amount of work they do per cent.
@@ProjectFarm Roderick brings up another good point that reminds me of an issue my brother-in-law ran into at 3M with Chinese contractors unimpressed with the performance of 3M flap wheels compared to their cheaper domestics. After all the testing they did between the 3M and cheap Chinese wheels to show the superior properties and costs of 3M's products while the contractors watched, it turned out the ultimate reason they were unhappy was because the disks would eventually explode on people all because the contractors would attempt to use the *entire* wheel beyond the recommended replacement diameter simply because there was still abrasive let where the cheaper domestics no longer did. It may not make a huge difference per wheel, but to someone who's buying 1000's of such consumables in a year, pennies add up to dollars pretty quick.
The test rigs you come up with are incredible… Theres no chance for any type of bias or data error which makes for incredible results. I have been watching your videos routinely for the last year now and always am impressed by every single one. I am still very curious as to how these results would compare if the wheels were very worn down. Cheaper cutting wheels tend to break off bits of the wheel as they wear down which can cause the grinder to throw itself which can be very dangerous. I would say even though it seems as though the $6 blade's performance was better in the competition, it would more be about safety of the blade. My assumption would be the $6 blade would be much stronger and safer to use than a cheap blade. Maybe next you could try doing a demo like this with cutoff wheels since they tend to be a bit more dangerous and quality seems to be a lot more important with those. Thanks for the great content!!
Well one could say testing a wheel for 3 minutes is not even close to the same as testing it for an hour or more like you are going to in the real world, the nortons dull very fast making them the worst out of all of them. But this is the only test he's done that I had any issues with!
I've been watching your videos on my Firestick, and while silent, I'm still here. I am a big fan. Thank you for all you do and for testing products honestly. I have changed some of the things I buy and even bought some things you have suggested, this being one of them.
If my calculations are correct the total disk steel removal per dollar ranks are: 1) Warrior (3,512g/$) 2) DeWalt (2,377g/$) 3) Makita (1,225g/$) 4) Norton (1,120g/$) 5) Avanti (939g/$) 6) Diablo (507g/$) *This doesn't take into account differences in weight of the backing plate If you don't care about price and just want to change disks the least then it would be: 1) Norton 2) DeWalt 3) Makita 4) Warrior 5) Avanti 6) Diablo
I think you actually have a clear winner in the HF wheel... When it comes down to it I'm going to pick stock removal first for a grinding wheel, and then possibly surface finish, and cost isn't going to weigh in much unless it becomes very expensive (in this case the
Love that jig! Love all your charts and measurements. Love how you show the initial wheel weight in the upper corner as you weigh the wheel after test. Love your choices of music. Love your fair and ever cheerful presentations. You, Farm Boy, are a delight!
In theory a larger gap is more desirable but your ignition system has to be up to the challenge. The more pressure that present before combustion (high compression ratio and/or supercharging) tends to require a smaller gap or a more powerful ignition system to ensure the spark can jump the gap. You can also go overboard as the voltage will only build until it can jump the gap so if you spend money for a 80,000v coil but your engine only needs 20,000 volts to jump the gap you're wasting money. Also, the tighter the gap the less voltage the ignition system has to build up to jump the gap. If your ignition is marginal for the pressure and gap you're trying to arch it can lead to misfires.
These discs are meant to be worn out and replaced, and they're meant to grind. As far as I'm concerned, whatever has the best grind-to-dollar ratio is the best. None of them seemed to really wear out excessively fast. So from what I can tell, the Warrior or Avanti discs were the best in this test.
It is always a tradeoff. I used a lot of different makes of grind and cutoff wheels in the last 13 years. And there is a lot of difference between them. I had cutoff wheels that wore out so quick I only could cut 1 6inch pipe with it. And others I could do 10 with them. Also the balance on the grinding wheels is a big point for me. I don't like the 7mm wheels but the 4mm. My favorites for grinding is the pferd 4mm and for cutoff klingspor 1mm
@@mrturner69 Well let's compare the Warrior to the Norton then: The Warrior is 6x cheaper and removes 27% more material. If time=money, this alone is already putting the Warrior in a major lead. I'm not sure totally sure how the wheel loss percentage translates to the wheel's total lifespan, but for argument's sake, let's say the Warrior has half the lifespan of the Norton (in other words, it needs to be replaced twice as often). Now, let's say a seasoned pro takes about 1 full minute to replace a worn out wheel (assuming the new one is within reach). When ignoring time saved by the Warrior's faster cutting rate, it would take 4 Warrior wheels to become cost ineffective when compared to a Norton. But, considering how quickly it removes material, it'd be closer to 5 wheels. I don't know how many wheels the average pro would go through in a single day, but I'd be surprised if it was more than 3.
It is useful to sometimes combine two tests into one numerical value to use as a metric to quantify the performance in both tests at once. For example, taking the amount of metal removed (in grams) and dividing it by the amount of material lost (in grams) will give you a unitless quantity / coefficient that describes the performance of both tests in one number. You can think of it as "the amount of metal it can remove, per unit loss in disk material." Doing this calculation gives the following coefficients. Warrior: 24 Dewalt: 38 Avanti: 17 Makita: 23.5 Diablo: 12.75 Norton: 35 Going by these numbers, the Dewalt clearly comes on top, and the Diablo is terrible in comparison. In other words, the Dewalt removed the most material with the least amount of loss, and the Diablo removed the least amount of material with the most amount of loss.
Excellent job once again, might be ideal to buy 6 at 99 cents than 1 at $6 lol ... I got one for you, I was thinking about doing this, but I’m hoping you can. AA rechargeable battery test, for example, take few AA brands, big brands and Amazon brand and a cheap 1 or 2 brands. 3 tests I was thinking, a group to sit out fully charged for couple weeks and see which hold charge the best, another group into flashlights and see which last longest and a 3rd group under extreme test something that drains batteries fast like an RC car or straight connected to a motor with some resistance or a propeller etc, just few ideas, you are welcome to use my examples, I’ll do it next year if you don’t wanna haha
AvE has done this with HF batteries vs Duracell some time ago. HF actually performed better and at a better price point according to his results. Possibly due to the marketing budget?
FixitNick, this has already been accomplished; years ago. Check out 'NLee the Engineer's' comments on Amazon, you'll find dozens upon DOZENS of his engineering, analytical breakdowns on this very specific subject. He's done such an excellent job, it likely cannot be done to the same degree as Project Farm does. Absolutely zero disrespect to Project Farm because I'm one of his most loyal RUclips fans, I'm just saying that this test you're requesting has already been accomplished and you can see his results on Amazon. He literally is the GO TO aficionado for this subject on rechargables. Additionally, I know about this because I've been using Rechargeable batteries for years on RC Helicopters and always wanted the best rechargeable(s) per price I could get with proper recharging techniques. Check it out, it's amazing what details he's gone into already for your answers! Cheers!
I continue to enjoy your methodology and procedures and I like the latest addition of side-by-side footage. What I will say is that as the wheels become more worn, they may actually cut faster due to the surface being more in-line with the material (instead of a corner on a flat piece, it's two flat pieces meeting). This could cause any wheel that wears quickly to also cut faster proportionally. You might consider redoing this test and pre-wearing the disks so that the cutting surfaces meet more equally between the different brands. Also, I would be curious to know where the steel came from and maybe what kind of steel it is just to get a sense of how the wheels are doing, though it doesn't affect the end result as long as all the steel pieces are the same (which they appear to be).
Thank you very much. Yes, all the steel came from the same piece of metal. I cut it into several pieces for testing. It's mild steel. Great point on the wear of the wheel and cutting speed.
I don’t use grinding wheels or cut off’s very often. I bought the combo pack from harbor freight well over 2 years ago and have only used 2 cut off’s in that time. So for me the harbor freight work just fine.
Yep here is what the test results show. And yes I copy/pasted from my original post. Now put that quantity over the price per wheel and you will get: Harbor Freight Warrior: 24/$.99 Dewalt: 38 /$2.68 Avanti: 17 /$2.77 Makita: 23.5/$ 2.99 Diablo: 12.75 /$4.47 Norton: 35/$6.28 So the best grams removed, per grams lost, per dollar is: 1st place: Harbor Freight Warrior: 24.24 2nd place: Dewalt: 14.18 3rd place: Makita: 7.86 4th place: Avanti: 6.14 5th place: Norton: 5.57 6th place: Diablo: 2.85 As you can see, the warrior is by far the best and Dewalt is a reasonable choice if you dont like changing out wheels. On the other hand, the Diablo is by far and away the worst wheel. Don't buy this one. The others in the middle are ok but nowheres near as good as Dewalt or Harbor Freight Warrior. Goes to show that price isn't everything, sometimes the cheaper option is better.
Excellent video thanks. I would like to see another grinding wheel showdown with more industrial wheels included not just Norton. In particular 3M Cubitron wheels which are amazing particularly on stainless. You can instantly feel how effortless and cool Cubitron wheels cut. A really fussy fabricator I know said they are the best wheels he's ever used in 30 years. Heat generated would also be an interesting measurement because that can affect cutting performance and is an indicator of grinding efficiency. Instead of rotating on one spot for 3 minutes it would be easy to make a rolling back and forth shuttle with a connecting rod and crank wheel to test over a larger surface area more reflective of actual use which would dissipate heat better.
Thanks for the amazing video. Your test rigs and ideas of putting products into tests like that are amazing. Above all, the production and editing of the video is terrific. I admire the amount of effort you put into these projects.
In my opinion you're genuinely one of the best RUclips channels. I love your content. Your intelligence and hard work really shows in every video. I also love how you interact with your audience and take suggestions.
Well Commander, I never cease to be amazed with all the different ways you come up with to test stuff! Just fakes me totally out! So THANKS for another unbiased test! NO problem whatsoever! I just use the DeWalt wheels because I can get them right down the road and I'm leery of cutoff wheels. I just grind till it burns through or score it good and let the hammer of choice do the finish work. I guess that's what I get for running equipment and being destructive. So THANKS again and BLESSINGS to yall. Raining and raw outside. Glad to be inside!
Hi Lewie, Thank you very much for the positive comments! I've had cutoff wheel break apart and that can cause injury. Thanks again and wishing you many Blessings! @@ProjectFarm Ours is coming thursday according to the weather guys but they practise just like doctors. That's why I'm skittish of the cutoffs. I' don't like things whizzing around that I haven't meant to whiz. The grinders are bad enough and I never take a guard off. I was thinning the business end of a go-devil or Collins axe or splitting maul at the boulder hole with a 6-inch Milwaukee grinder and thinking that it would be a dandy rig to eat someone UP with. A while later one of the guys got a finger cut off with one. So we feel about the same about it. So stay warm! So far the heat pump is doing the deal BUT I know where a shed full of dry wood is, just in case! Thanks, Yall and GBWYall too!
I use cutoff wheels for 13 years now. Only 1 exploded on me because I was testing its limits. The 2.5mm wheels are never a problem. The 1mm wheels let you hear when they are done. They start "singing" when the elasticity is over
@@franskamstra2728 I've tried somewhat successfully not to start singing tenor and it'd just take one of those to change my outlook. I better not mess with them.
Speed04GT it is by far the best disc i have ever used and i work in the metal Industry and have tried a lot of disc. The closest competitors i have found is a ceramaxx or a rhodius ceramicon disc.
Absolutely. That's what I was hoping for when I clicked on the video. I mean, it's still an awesome video. But I really wanted to see a Cubitron. I swear by those things.
@@CrashTestCoder I agree. Some brands of grind wheels once you get the new edge off of them the material removal rate goes way down. The good ones will continue to remove metal about the same rate all the way down until they need replaced. The bad ones work good for a few minutes than glaze over and become almost useless.
Plumber/Pipe fitter here, my favorite wheel after using pretty much every type is a sigma green, I don’t know if you will be able to get your hands on one but I guarantee you will like it
Warrior showed something that the Norton wheel was bad about... metal build up on the grit. Grinding has more aspects that material removal. Norton lasted longer, because of either a less friable grit or a harder bond, or both, than the Warrior. Ok, it lasted longer, but I’ll bet anything your work piece got considerable hotter because the grit did not fracture and expose fresh cutting edges. The Warrior probably did break down too quickly for what you ran against it, but the grit stayed clean and sharp the entire time and probably produced significantly less heat.
3m cubitron ll and Norton blue fire/charger are the best in my experience we do heavy grinding at work huge back gouges with 9 inch wheels, although the better wheels are more expensive im able to save more energy and get the job done faster and have the peace of mind knowing i have the best of the best to help me! also softer wheels =more metal removal but shorter life. harder wheels are designed to last longer and will glaze fast
I second this, Norton wins in the abrasives dept. Also I rarely change wheels, instead I just have multiple grinders. 1 with a wire wheel, 1 with a cutoff, 1 with a hard disc, and one with an 80 grit sanding disc. Only time I change anything is if I'm heat shrinking sheet metal and I have to put the shrinking wheel on.
Awesome testing as always Todd, thank you. For me, as a DIY'er, it depends on what I'm doing as to which wheel I use. For knocking down a weld or cleaning rusty/dirty steel before welding, it's the Warrior wheel hands down for speed and cost effectiveness. But if I'm removing mill scale it's a DeWalt silicon carbide wheel. Aluminum oxide wheels (the most common type) just melt mill scale and move it around on the steel, where silicon carbide actually removes it. So I own 2 DeWalt silicon carbide wheels for mill scale and the others are all Warrior aluminum oxide wheels of varying grit for everything else. So far this combination has worked well for me. Thanks again for the excellent content, PF is the best. 👍
How about Fixaflat vs Slime and other products like it? Yes, I did just have a flat. Yes, I did have a can of Fixaflat. No, it did not have any propellant in it to inflate the tire.
@@ProjectFarm I did see more suggestions on what can be used instead of the Fix-a-Flat, Slime or Tireject. Other suggestions included shredded newspaper and antifreeze or windshield washer fluid, one claim that used antifreeze worked better, Bars Leak liquid aluminum radiator sealer and antifreeze, and even liquid starch. I'm not sure how you would test. Maybe get some old tires from a junk yard?
How long fixaflat or slime is another question. I've heard a tire repair place could refuse your business it's such an annoyance. I have not heard this of slime. In my use of slime in bicycles, it has trouble sealing at 100 psi of skinny tires but works ok for lower pressure tires. Check out road bike tire sealants. There are more options in the bike market. Also what size of holes are repairable with sealants. I like your videos and sometimes believe your tests could be more comprehensive. Good science is all about good tests.
I just want to say another great video. I love how you did the testing in the video today. I love how you used a jig for the testing so you would not gamble of interfering with the results. The one thing that I would like to see done different in the video is when you did the weighting you did it in pounds as well. That is the only thing that I would of like to see done different other than that another good video and and great work, I know you put a lot of time and effort into these videos. I know you put money into the videos as well. I just wanted to let you know that I am now a patron for your channel. I am proud I am able to do that for you each month that i ma can. I just would like to give you another video idea, Lets test drill bits, what ones are better for drilling through steal. Does brand matter, is more you spend on drill bits worth the extra money that you pay for them, I just want to say great work and I look forward to seeing the next new video that you will be producing on the channel.
Thank you very much for the positive comments! Great point on the pounds. I tried to use ounces but I need a more precise scale. I'll have to buy in soon. Thank you very much for supporting the channel too! I'll test drill bits in a few weeks. I'm still working on test design that'll allow the bits to be tested with minimal human involvement to make sure I don't mess up the results. Thanks again.
I don't work in a repair shop anymore, but, I'll never have less love for the sparks shooting off before a welding job. One of my favorite things of the day!
I'm sure it gets mentioned a lot, but I really appreciate your devotion to equal and consistent testing standards. You clearly put thought into these things. So many channels, even channels with higher production value, will make "x vs. y" videos, then compare two completely different things. Like ".380 vs. 9mm", then use an FMJ for one caliber, then a hollowpoint for the other. Good stuff here. I don't even own an angle grinder, or use breakaway grease, but your videos are still interesting.
He's come a VERY long way just this year. I've been here since the very long winded video's at around 60K subs and the quality just goes up and up. But yes.. I would love to see 500K by Christmas.
You missed 3M Cubitron II they a for me the best grinding medium for cutting and grinding . They run extreme well and fast and last for a realy long time.
Excellent! I have been wondering for some time just how the different grinding wheels would perform against each other and you gave me the information that I wanted. Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to generate all of the comparison videos that you produce.
Omg yes. If u try, could you break them out between the typical vs the single blade wipers? Also, could you include the AutoZone duralast brands vs like rainx and others? I just had to replace the wipers on my car and there were some good options to choose from.
@@Alienking01, we do have Bosch in the US. I've used Bosch Icons. The next set I'ma get will be silicone, though. I've never had a set, but I'll be interested to see how they perform. No doubt they'll hold up significantly better.
In my opinion for the home shop cheap grinding wheels are okay, but if you are doing a lot of grinding (like in a welding shop) you should consider the higher priced options
The ultimate tool test channel on you tube, You consistently outdo the rest. Congrats on your new high mark, its well deserved ! The others need to pay attention to this! Nothing sillier than a guy running around a Home Depo and Blowes telling us what they think is a "good deal" - Facepalm Your channel is the mark, other Tool channels should be measured by. I was a fabricator and had a retail tool and equipment store for decades and your videos should be required viewing for any tool buyer or seller or user IMHO! Keep up the excellent work sir!
@@ProjectFarm also include the sand disk with the plastic backing, 3m have them. They outperform flappy disks by a huge margin. Take the 60 or 80 grit for it
I've only recently discovered your channel, I'm very impressed and appreciative of the thought, time, and care you put into setting up everything to take the human element out of the testing. Also, how in videos like this one you clearly point out that depending on what you're doing, your choice of product may differ. 👍
lol. Yes, I took extra measures to keep the shop from getting too foggy. Box fan and filters. I wore a high quality respirator to avoid breathing in the dust.
I like that smell though. It’s similar but different to the smell of removing main cap bolts from an old v8 you’re tearing down. Either way , smells like victory!!

I love your videos, this is a bit like toilet paper, it's all going down the drain, but it just depends on how much or little you want to use and if your willing to poke any fingers through 🙄
You are simply the best product testing person on here. A lot of people test and compare objects but they always are biased towards something. But you. You simply test all products in teh exact same way, without being able to cheat the tests and you let us decide for ourselfes what is best. thank you for your efforts. This will save all of us money and trouble. And as a suggestion, screwdrivers and drill screwdriver heads. I often break out the phillips heads screwdrivers because the material of the screw is tougher than the screwdriver
I use Harbor Freight wheels for mostly everything I do in my wood and metal shop. I don't work on projects everyday nor do I have big projects going on all of the time. Harbor Freight is the way to go for me because their products seem to be made for weekend warriors like me. Thanks for all of your videos. They really help me to make intelligent decisions when it comes to what I can expect from the tools that you features. Your videos also hold manufacturers accountable for their potential performances.
I have gained a lot of insight into what products to buy for the best price and quality. Thank you so much for doing these. I am a disabled veteran and on a fixed income and you help me so much to save money.
I think what I like most about your videos is that you explain what's happening before you jump right in. Then you're consistent with the testing. Maybe not good enough for a lab, but like AvE says "Good enough for the girls I go out with"
very professional!I am also a Grinding disc manufacturer in China, and I do product tests every day. For example, cutting or Grinding stainless steel, iron, and aluminum. This is also how we test products before shipping.Everything is so familiar
These comparison videos are just awesome, so much detail and infinite just 8.02min. Just amazing, I have seen a lot of them and they are a treat to watch. We have discovered that the Norton wheel is the best but at a price, as part of Your charts it might be interesting to know the $ cost of removing steel from the steel blocks. Anyway these videos are just great !
One of my favorite channnels for sure. I am constantly impressed with the amount of preperation and thoroughness of the tests performed. Good work dude....i dont even l Know your name. ....lol.
I'd like to see a shop tour and what you find to be the most useful tools that a lot of people are unfamiliar with. It would also be cool to see how you make some of these testing tools - like the turntable for the metal. Too late now to make a video on that but if you were making something like that in the future I think a lot of people would like to see how you go about thinking up the concept and finding parts for it/ deciding what RPM it is going to be etc. Was watching some of your earlier videos - wow! - you are really getting a lot better in front of the camera
I hardly ever comment on you tube videos but I want to let you know that the content you provide on product testing is fair and non bias to me anyway. I really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks and keep up the good work.... Ohh yeah Happy Thanksgiving!
Love this channel, feels like I'm not wasting my money. Ended up ordering that titanium trimmer string and can agree it's the best I've ever very used with clean cuts. Thankyou
Thank you very much! I continue to really like the titanium trimmer line as well. I can tell the difference as it's definitely better than the competition.
You do great videos. I would have liked to seen the extra weight added to all of the wheels as well. Thanks for the solid tests. Your channel is my go to channel.
Great test and comparison. My grandad loved to putter around with his bench grinder; but on a hot summer day, he often used the grinder to file down his toenails! He must have been very flexible! So, whenever the lights flickered and we could hear a distant hum, grandmother would say, “Granddad’s cutting his nails again.”
love all the thinking you do to set up neutral/unbiased testing. you're one of the few online that do a good comprehensive job... thanks for all of this! I
After being a welder for 35 years. I can confirm that a wheel that costs 1/6 of the price is always a better economic decision! Having a more expensive disk cutting through steel like butter is just a rewarding feeling of getting work down! Watching the helper drop the grinder and breaking the $6 disk as opposed to the 0.99 cent one is disheartening. Another great video!

In my opinion the metal removal rate is king !!! Tool life and tool price also factor in but removal rate is direct related to cost ! Labor cost out on a job, doing a job in extreme cold or extreme hot outdoors ...
with 20+ years of welding and fabrication background my priorities are
1) metal removal rate
2) surface finish
As long as the tool life is not horrible it does not really matter how good it really is.
And tool cost is very easily offset with labor savings .....
Just my point of view.
Great point! Thank you
Project Farm i really and truly appreciate you taking the time to read all the comments !!!!
Yep, how fast it grinds means more then the rest
I'd like to see cutting wheels tested

Klingspor by the case XD I just like them because they come to me lol
Let us remember that high removal rate gets big jobs done more quickly, but slow rate allows grinds or cuts to be more controllable. Perhaps different tools for different jobs.
Great point. Thank you
High removal rate allows for big jobs to get done quickly, AND it allows you to control how much material is taken off efficiently through the use of pressure.

@Roderick storey I don't know.... That 1$ disc looks like a HUGE bargain.
TheVexCortex wow man good work on the spreadsheet
Thank you very much! Great test idea! I'll do it!
Well one could say testing a wheel for 3 minutes is not even close to the same as testing it for an hour or more like you are going to in the real world, the nortons dull very fast making them the worst out of all of them. But this is the only test he's done that I had any issues with!

4) Norton (1,120g/$)
5) Avanti (939g/$)

Great test idea!
Mighty Car Mods?
I would say spark plug type if gap off it just won't run.
@kostman23 McM are weaksauce, now its all about that MCMTV2
Project Farm that is a very impressive set up you built for this video.
Thank you very much!
I agree
These discs are meant to be worn out and replaced, and they're meant to grind. As far as I'm concerned, whatever has the best grind-to-dollar ratio is the best. None of them seemed to really wear out excessively fast. So from what I can tell, the Warrior or Avanti discs were the best in this test.
You are right. Thank you
It is always a tradeoff.
My money goes to the DeWalt
Depends if you're tooling at home or a pro at work. Changing wheels takes time and money if your a pro. If your a home jobber it doesn't matter
@@mrturner69
Well let's compare the Warrior to the Norton then:
The Warrior is 6x cheaper and removes 27% more material.
Best ones from my experience are cubitron. I use grinders hours per week at work and cubitron wheels last a crazy long time
Good to know! Thank you

@@ProjectFarm If you decide to do that, please try "Awesome" found at most dollar stores. Very inexpensive but powerful stuff!
Warrior: 24
Dewalt: 38
Avanti: 17
Makita: 23.5
Diablo: 12.75
Norton: 35
Going by these numbers, the Dewalt clearly comes on top, and the Diablo is terrible in comparison. In other words, the Dewalt removed the most material with the least amount of loss, and the Diablo removed the least amount of material with the most amount of loss.
Thank you for crunching the numbers!
Was waiting for this in the video. Thanks for providing the info. I currently use Dewalt by happenstance so will continue to do so!
I never thought of this. Extremely impressive.
Exactly, thanks for posting
Now take those numbers and divide by price per wheel.
I love that grinding wheel test jig! Great videos!

Thank you!
Well done, as usual. :-) Thanks for the great videos!
Thank you very much! I really enjoy your videos! You're doing an amazing job!
I don’t use grinding wheels or cut off’s very often. I bought the combo pack from harbor freight well over 2 years ago and have only used 2 cut off’s in that time. So for me the harbor freight work just fine.
Thank you
Yep here is what the test results show. And yes I copy/pasted from my original post.
Now put that quantity over the price per wheel and you will get:
Harbor Freight Warrior: 24/$.99
Dewalt: 38
/$2.68
Avanti: 17
/$2.77
Makita: 23.5/$
2.99
Diablo: 12.75
/$4.47
Norton: 35/$6.28
So the best grams removed, per grams lost, per dollar is:
1st place: Harbor Freight Warrior: 24.24
2nd place: Dewalt: 14.18
3rd place: Makita:
7.86
4th place: Avanti:
6.14
5th place: Norton: 5.57
6th place: Diablo: 2.85
As you can see, the warrior is by far the best and Dewalt is a reasonable choice if you dont like changing out wheels.
Thanks for the video idea.

@@CrashTestCoder I agree. Some brands of grind wheels once you get the new edge off of them the material removal rate goes way down.
Great point! Thank you
Yah, it also requires more effort for the user and the battery.
Thanks for the recommendation.
I work with norton since a long time and when i try other brand i always return to norton but Walter and cubitron really good also
You should try Norton Quantum3

the only wheels my local hardware place sell are dewalt and makita so thanks for the comparison I know what I'm getting from now on!
Glad to help!
Do you have some sort of engineering background? The setups you come up show some good enginuity👍
I sort of have an engineering background but not a degree in it. Thank you!
It's called using what ya have. Genius at work in every video.
Thank you very much for the positive comment!
You should way more subs. #getprojectfarmto500k Great video.
Thank you very much!
He's come a VERY long way just this year. I've been here since the very long winded video's at around 60K subs and the quality just goes up and up. But yes.. I would love to see 500K by Christmas.
You should way more English. ;-)
You missed 3M Cubitron II they a for me the best grinding medium for cutting and grinding . They run extreme well and fast and last for a realy long time.
Thank you!
The 3M Cubitron 2 and the Walter Excavator are probably the fastest cutting, highest removal rate and longest lasting grinding wheels I’ve ever used.
Thanks for the info. Just bought a couple, will see how they do. Use 3M Trizact belts for the past 25 years, the best sanding belts on the planet.
This is the truth. Nothing runs like a Cubitron and they even do well in the field with mud and rain!
we use the cubitron at work... fast removal and leaves a nice finish
could you make a video.and test work gloves..leather vs other types and see which hold up the best to everyday use....and I love your channel
Great test idea! Thank you
Excellent! I have been wondering for some time just how the different grinding wheels would perform against each other and you gave me the information that I wanted. Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to generate all of the comparison videos that you produce.
Thank you
Have you tested wiper blades yet?
Not yet. Great test idea!
Omg yes. If u try, could you break them out between the typical vs the single blade wipers? Also, could you include the AutoZone duralast brands vs like rainx and others? I just had to replace the wipers on my car and there were some good options to choose from.
Do you have Bosch and Denso wiper blades in the US?
Bosch wipers are no. 1 seller in Germany, and Denso wipers are the best wipers I have used.
@@Alienking01, we do have Bosch in the US. I've used Bosch Icons. The next set I'ma get will be silicone, though. I've never had a set, but I'll be interested to see how they perform. No doubt they'll hold up significantly better.
@@christaylor9095 yes, that's something I am also looking into. Next wipers are going to be Silikon.
In my opinion for the home shop cheap grinding wheels are okay, but if you are doing a lot of grinding (like in a welding shop) you should consider the higher priced options
Great point. Thank you
That's what I was going to say myself.
I believed 6 cheap wheels would outlast 1 expensive one.
Great videos! Could you also do this for the "Cutting" disk as well? I end up cutting aluminum a lot.
Thank you for the video idea!
@@ProjectFarm The setup for a cutting disk will be more interesting to see than the results.
Thanks so much!
Happy Veterans Day! How long were you in the Air Force?
Thank you very much! If you're a vet, Happy Veterans day to you as well.
I’m not, but very few people know you served, so I thought I would break the ice
U must test flappydiscs for angle grinders 🤗💪
I'll do it! Great test idea!
I agree, you can use the same test rig. need to keep all the grits the same and test for metal removal and surface finish.
@@ProjectFarm also include the sand disk with the plastic backing, 3m have them. They outperform flappy disks by a huge margin. Take the 60 or 80 grit for it
@@franskamstra2728 love them theyre absolute monsters for removing material
Test the Harbor Freight Grinder against the others
Thank you. Sorry I wasn't clear on this. The warrior brand is sold by Harbor Freight. Thanks again
Project Farm I think he his meaning the grinder it’s self against the other company grinders for durability test and performance
You mean the machines?
@@franskamstra2728 yes
@@ProjectFarm test the machines
I've only recently discovered your channel, I'm very impressed and appreciative of the thought, time, and care you put into setting up everything to take the human element out of the testing. Also, how in videos like this one you clearly point out that depending on what you're doing, your choice of product may differ. 👍
Welcome and thanks!
When is the recip blade part 2 video coming?
Very soon. It's a 4-video series. I'm thinking all 4 videos should be ready by Thanksgiving weekend.
Can't wait. If you have any trouble getting Lenox product let me know. I can help.
Buy your limited edition (6 only) project farm ashtrays :)
lol. Nice!
Project Farm
Haha autograph it and take my money 😬
I can smell the burning metal from here nice
lol. Yes, I took extra measures to keep the shop from getting too foggy. Box fan and filters. I wore a high quality respirator to avoid breathing in the dust.
@@ProjectFarm love the test rig ya put together.
I like that smell though.
It’s similar but different to the smell of removing main cap bolts from an old v8 you’re tearing down.
Either way , smells like victory!!
You’re still my go to RUclips channel. Starting to drive my wife a bit crazy. She’s not very interested and says I’m obsessed!!! I don’t mind. Please keep’em comin’.
Thanks, will do!
20% off and a free item ….. harbor freight wins. 10 pack of mix disc AWESOME the flap wheels at 1$ apiece sweet deal.
Great point.I'll test the flap disks soon.
GREAT! I forgot to say, awesome job as always. Your setups are always simple but effective!!!
The mix pack is great, I do flux welding its nice to have choices on my projects.
Can you do Benchmark abrasives and Walter flap disks?
I love your videos, this is a bit like toilet paper, it's all going down the drain, but it just depends on how much or little you want to use and if your willing to poke any fingers through 🙄
Thank you!
That's why I went back to Charmin extra strength......... because I'm not willing ! 😊 😜
@@kengamble8595 Try the Warrior wheel...except your finger will definitely go through.
Gotta laugh at the department store restrooms and their single ply tissue paper savings as I fold it into 64 ply.
Thank you very much! Great test idea! Thank you
I use Harbor Freight wheels for mostly everything I do in my wood and metal shop.
You are welcome! Glad to hear!
I have gained a lot of insight into what products to buy for the best price and quality. Thank you so much for doing these. I am a disabled veteran and on a fixed income and you help me so much to save money.
Glad I could help!
best channel for to the point no alternative agenda practical reviews bar none, keep up the great work love ur channel
Thank you!
I can't even think of a recommendation video my guy hasn't already done. I love this channel.
Thanks!
I think what I like most about your videos is that you explain what's happening before you jump right in. Then you're consistent with the testing. Maybe not good enough for a lab, but like AvE says "Good enough for the girls I go out with"
Thank you very much!
very professional!I am also a Grinding disc manufacturer in China, and I do product tests every day. For example, cutting or Grinding stainless steel, iron, and aluminum. This is also how we test products before shipping.Everything is so familiar
Thanks!
Really cherish the work you put into these tests and the attention to detail hence removing the human factor. another huge thumbs up from here.
Thank you!
The best, fairest, unbiased testing procedures on RUclips! Great video
Thank you very much!
7:10 Thank you for doing these tests. It's great seeing tests that are not biased and someone who is just looking for the facts!
Thank you!
Your absolutely a genius making these awesome rigs! Ingenious!!
Thanks for the positive comment
WOW, your channel grew fast! I started watching with your seafoam test about a year ago. Awesome work saving people a ton of money.
Thank you very much!
These comparison videos are just awesome, so much detail and infinite just 8.02min. Just amazing, I have seen a lot of them and they are a treat to watch.
We have discovered that the Norton wheel is the best but at a price, as part of
Your charts it might be interesting to know the $ cost of removing steel from the steel blocks.
Anyway these videos are just great !
Awesome, thank you!
One of my favorite channnels for sure. I am constantly impressed with the amount of preperation and thoroughness of the tests performed. Good work dude....i dont even l
Know your name. ....lol.
Thanks, Todd.
Thanks! Thanks for the suggestion.
I hardly ever comment on you tube videos but I want to let you know that the content you provide on product testing is fair and non bias to me anyway. I really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks and keep up the good work.... Ohh yeah Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you very much for the positive comments and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family too.
Holy cow, you come up with ingenious methods for consistent test results
Thank you!
You do great videos. I would have liked to seen the extra weight added to all of the wheels as well. Thanks for the solid tests. Your channel is my go to channel.
Great constructive feedback. Thank you
man you make the best videos on RUclips! your attention to detail in testing is fantastic. keep em coming!
Thank you!
My god man I'm always more impressed with the thought that goes into your tests the the things you test
Thank you
straight to the point, fair tests on all the equipment and nothing but honesty. thanks
Thank you!
Thanks! Thanks for sharing.
I have a Harbor Freight close by and some tools will do but others I pass on. Thx. For the great testing in your videos. Always enjoy .....
Thank you!
love all the thinking you do to set up neutral/unbiased testing. you're one of the few online that do a good comprehensive job...
thanks for all of this!

Thank you!
Thanks! Thanks for sharing.
