  • The new tower of Great St Marys was completed in 1608 and 5 bells were installed. In 1722 a ring of ten was cast by Richard Phelps. Various of these bells were recast and they became a twelve. Hung in a new frame in 1952, they were never easy to ring due to tower movement affecting the go.
2009 was the 800th anniversary of the founding of Cambridge University. A completely new ring of twelve bells were given to Great St Marys by the University... a gift from Martin "Dill" Faulkes. This generous donation was duly marked in the inscription of the new Tenor bell -
    THIS RING OF BELLS
    DONATED BY
    DR M C FAULKES
    TO CELEBRATE
    THE 800TH ANNIVERSARY
    OF THE
    UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE
    * * *
    AD GLORIAM DEI SONAT

The new bells were cast in 2009 and installed in July 2009 by Taylors Eayre and Smith of Loughborough, and I am pleased to say I assisted for a short amount of time with the completion of installation of fittings. I also witnessed the two trebles being cast when I visited the Loughborough works in Spring 2009.
The old ring of twelve all still survive, but in different places. The bells on which the clock struck are kept as separate clock bells as these are the bells on which the Cambridge ("Westminster") quarters first struck. The eleventh is on display at one of the colleges in Cambridge. Three of the old bells are hung inside each other in the intermediate chamber, and finally the three newer Taylor bells have been or are to be used in augmentation/restoration projects. The weight of the new tenor is 24 -1 - 1 (1232kg) and it's note is D (587.5Hz),
The frame in which the new bells are housed is unusual in that it has all but one of the bells swinging East-West. Only the tenor swings North-South, as that is the direction in which the tower is weak. The frame is made from galvanised steel to a design created by one of the ringers at Great St Marys. There are electronic adjustable sound control windows. The quarter bells are now hung in a framework to one side of the twelve bell frame. The little sanctus bell, cast in 1607 by John Warrin, hangs in it's own little frame atop the hour bell (the old tenor).
This ringing is a touch of Stedman Cinques, rung during the FODS tour of Cambridge in Autumn 2010. Mr Moulder appears in the video at 4:08 with his gorgeous pink shoes. Kings College chapel appears at 5:42 .

@simonbellringer Hmm it's a lot less noticeable here than at New York but I don't really see the need. However I like these bells more and more every time I listen and would love to come and ring here,

@irkibby I'm not sure how else to describe it, it's like it produces a split note (I'm told it's to make it stand out) but the effect isn't pleasing to my ears but I do think the rest are pretty damn good!

@simonbellringer Theyre a magnificent set of bells. As soon as I heard the trebles I was captivated.

@timmeh1507 Must say I quite like the treble, I suppose, like this split note thing, it is a split opinion thing.

@@RingerJake It was! 27-0-10 in C#- (544.5Hz). It turns out the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th & Tenor from the previous twelve are still in the tower & are used as the clock chime.

@simonbellringer We don't want New York bells over here! And certainly don't want Liverpool bells going over there! Your dislike of them is rather bemusing!
