- The Corpus Clock has been invented and designed by Dr John Taylor for Corpus Christi College Cambridge for the exterior of the college's new library building.
It was unveiled on 19 September 2008 by Prof Stephen Hawking, cosmologist and author of the global bestseller, A Brief History of Time.
The £1 million timepiece, known as The Corpus Clock, has been commissioned and designed to honour the John Harrison, who was famously the pioneer of Longitude and inventor of the esoteric clock mechanism known as a grasshopper escapement.
The clock has been designed by the inventor and horologist Dr John Taylor and makes ingenious use of the grasshopper escapement, moving it from the inside of the clock to the outside and refashioning it as a Chronophage, or time-eater, which literally devours time.

There is something at once soothing and hypnotic about a precision mechanical device. I could stare at this for hours. I would love to have a scaled-down version for my home.
wow, so much hate on the youtube comments.
this is a magnificent piece of work. thank you.
This clock is actually giving me the chills....I know it's just a clock by just the combination of the noise and the evil-looking grasshopper "eating" away time, is somewhat terrifying
Incredibly clever - every single function (seemingly random blinking, occasional slow seconds etc) is a product of the mechanical machinery of the clock - there are no separate devices, it's one mechanism. Also symbolically intelligent as a piece of art.
I lived in Cambridge and fall under the category mentioned ("unsuspecting citizens of Cambridge"). It is pretty cool in real life.
a thing of beauty. i work and have done for some years in engineering and to see this blew me away and to see how it worked is heart warming. thank you for sharing this.
I will be glad to watch (from RUclips) as this masterpiece of natural science, engineering, and fine art is unveiled at the University of Cambridge.
During the days of the guilds, before an aspiring Master may join a guild, he would have to create an exceptionally well-crafted piece. If the craftsmen of the old would see Corpus Chronophage, it will make the hair on the back of their necks curl.
Magnificent clock!!
I showed this video to my 3 y.o. grandson and he was truly fascinated by it. I must check it out in the flesh if I get back to the UK
what a fantastic work of art and horology.
That is so cool if they made a smaller version I would totally buy it.
That clock is awesome I would love to have one.
I could stare at it all day long hearing Tic Toc Tic Toc.
Chapter 9 of revalations anyone ????? Wow! so sublimnal!!
How is it useless? It's a functioning clock and a beautiful piece of art.
Ok, that went from the coolest clock I've ever seen, to the creepiest just like that.
Love the visual representation of the chronophage (eater of time).
Wonderful piece of art. Loved it
Do they make a mini version. (Chris Farley voice) That's totally...AWESOME.
Beautiful!
A lovely fusion of traditional clockwork with the led lights as opposed to "display".
Strange the way the clock behaves whenever striking the hour - it appears to dance to and fro.
Really impresive. Wonderful job!
It's awesome. It's just beautiful. And all those little details. I want one :/
Simply beautiful !!!! A lot of details !!!
That's fantastic. Very cool.
That is the most amazing thing I have ever seen.
wow, that is truly impressive
Fascinating.
Amazing...You should be very proud of this Artwork .
Love it, well done.
When Professor Hawking unveils the clock, I wonder if he will give a brief history of the timepiece?
Most. Badass. Clock. Ever.
Looks like something H.R. Giger would think of. It's beautiful and disturbing at the same time.
i want to see it so badly. it has a great sound too
Awesome!!
Amazing
Well impressive piece of work :)
Beautful clock!!
SIMPLY AMAZING
A new twist on an old concept.I love your clock.Fantastic, and mechanical. How accurate is it likely to be?I can get some of my mechanical clocks to keep
That is very nice.
cool
If it were quieter, I'd like to have one in my room. :D Looks awesome!
Do want!! Want now!! o.O
Holy crap.
I. Must. Have. One.
Yay, a version of the video that isn't squished :D
Does the "Klingon High Command" know you took their clock out of their conference room?
that thing is brilliant :D
Wow, i want one :D
Is there's a wristwatch version it of?
When the clock struck the hour, it did it's chiming sequence, moving the lights back and forth. But after that, the seconds continue with 1. Shouldn't it compensate for the chiming? Aren't they losing seconds?
Wow. I want one.
that's creepy as hell...but also really cool looking too. I'd love to have that in my home, just not in my room lol
Stunningly beutiful
I want a version only with the LED's
Wow... shiny!
that thing only takes up 60 watts???
4:00
damn. that clock is huge.
Fantastic clock. But what kind of scary-arse grasshoppers are flitting about in Taylor's backyard?
What do you mean? its just a clock.???
Time Travel is wonderful.
Fan-Bloody-Tastique and I'll have two
he says in the video that the whole thing only uses 60 watts, and that's only for the lights.
the rest of the clock is mechanical.
@g0vqw Wikipedia says "The clock is entirely accurate only once every five minutes."
September 19 , day of the inauguration, both the announcement that the Hadron collider failed and the World market? "Put" options banned. But can a "plane" fly though a building without slowing down? Will Taylor quote Einstein? Taylor here conflates subjective and objective time. /oqEpuTGc98s
theres a steampunk to it ..
You don't know what subliminal means or how to spell it.
A magnificent clock except for the grasshopper.
Don't you think it's a bit too mechanic?
it must be hell trying to change the time on daylight savings lol
I believe this cost over a million dollars, am I correct?
Awesome. It'd suck to try and sleep with that shit in the room though.
me 2 were can i get 2 one 4 me and 1 for eBay...
Jed Clampett-lookin' inventor
Wow, this is old.
as cool as it is, it does seem a bit overboard.. i'll stick with my watch
I'll take one in silver xD
Yes it is ......
2 meany blind eyes....
dude...
Um, I am concerned about the energy used on this clock... if if it is minimal and wether we need it now of all times
who ask you?
=) aahahahah la lahaahahahahaha
In your (unfathomably wrong) opinion.
Brilliant but nasty, Nobody is gonna put this on their wall whist they are eating dinner.
This clock has kind of a cheap look to it. I love clocks, but something about the design lacks the class one would expect when thinking about 1 million. It looks cool when it is dark, but then the grasshopper looks like it doesn't belong there at all. And the blue light shouldn't be seen from behind the clock.
Masonic peice of shit.
daymn......ist an ugly ass clock, as a clock.
but its amazing as art.
and its big as fuck...
no thanks.
this guy knows somethin we dont.... i dont fucking like it
Weird stuff ..... it is quite subliminal..... FOULISH MORTALS:(
get some culture. youth.
That clock is awesome I would love to have one.
I could stare at it all day long hearing Tic Toc Tic Toc.
