Known amongst ringers as one of the finest 8's in England, the heavy 8 at OLEM were all cast in 1895 by John Taylor & Co. With a tenor of 31 and a half hundredweight they are the 8th heaviest ring of 8 hung for change ringing.
The bells themselves are relatively easy to ring for their weight, however the back 2 are somewhat of a challenge. Further, the front bells are a little flighty due to the long draught. The ringing chamber is a vast space, with an open gallery to the West looking into the church.
The bells are hung in a large H frame below the tracery windows. Before the 1990s the chamber was open into the spire, however there is now a floor above the bells. Above this is a cavernous open space with the windows blocked up, and a superb view up into the spire. Here an antenna for the radio station Cambridge 105 rises into the darkness above.
Unfortunately both of my cards corrupted around 20 minutes into the quarter peal, and instead of making the video with just one camera angle, I decided to use the footage I had anyway. Therefore the ringing is a little patchy in places as the ringers get settled, however it is an extremely good effort for these bells. This was the tenor ringers first time turning it into a quarter peal.

Best bells I’ve heard in a long time and I’m not even kidding about it being the best bells in the world
What a lovely sounding eight they are.
Superb sounding bells, remarkably grand
They’re very very good indeed. Perhaps a little disappointing in the ringing chamber, but outside they’re among the most impressive bells I have ever heard.
A glorious sounding weighty eight that are sadly not heard enough
That tenor really does roar !
One of my favorite pre Simpson Taylor rings
amazing!
Old school Taylor's pre Simpson tuning
I love the sounds it’s very funky and sexy
If you answer my comment I say there beautiful!😊😮
I never rung these bells but I always thought this tower was an invite only. On the latest doves guide it doesn't seem to say it now.
They don’t hold a practice night, nor do they ring much for services or special occasions. The only ringing they really get is the occasional Wednesday evening quarter peal (which generally you do have to be invited into), or visiting bands. They are very welcoming to visiting bands, but you have to make sure you request the bells months in advance!
heavy ring of 8 bells
Taylor pre Simpson wasn't bad! You had rings such as Imperial College and St Paul's Cathedral which are not bad!
9 bells
