  • Turning the tenors over, followed by part of a quarter peal of Cambridge on this novel eight; unique in that the back six bells are steel, and the two trebles are bronze!
The tower used to contain a complete Dobson ring of six, dating from 1814. However, in October 1977, vandals set fire to the church, destroying all but the outer shell and tower. Local efforts put the church back in use relatively quickly, and much of the furniture is second hand; the font spent a century in a garden before being rescued, the oak pulpit was a gift from York Minster, and the pews came from the demolished church of St Mary, Ince-in-Makerfield.
The bells were replaced with a steel ring six, originally from Christ Church, Bootle. A local ringer paid £15 to save them being scrapped, and bring them to Hale! Despite finding two additional steel bells to complete the octave, they were underweight, and their poor tone rendered them unusable. Two bronze bells were cast by Eijsbouts of Holland; every other bellfounder approached declined the job! The steel bells were tuned, and the bronze trebles sympathetically tuned to match; the result is a surprisingly pleasant sounding light ring of eight, which handle well.

It's a shame that so many Dobson bells have been lost eg. Pier Head. They are so often excellent in tone and he was way ahead of his time in casting and tuning bells!

Interesting sounding bells. They do work quite well as an eight though.

They were surprisingly OK! Once we got over the giggles and tuned in they were quite pleasant - I've certainly rung on a lot worse!

Funnily enough I don't dislike them. They work as an 8

I liked them! They needed a bit of "tuning into", but were quite pleasant really!
