I stood next to the bells being rung in Worcester Cathedral (WITH EAR DEFENDERS!) once when all 12 bells were ringing and my rib cage began to shake because a rib cage matches the shape of a bell and begins to resonate in unison with one of the harmonics of the bells. Can't imagine being stood next to a nearly ten tonne bell being rung let alone swinging it by hand. I ring church bells with a rope in the normal way but by hand looks actually quite risky and loud.
There might be a bit more potential, but not much. That clapper is hitting the bell harder than it looks. Plus, In this case, the bell could not hang from a straighter headstock as the tower would not hold that sort of force.
As ringer myself, I am so far removed from UK by great distance (8'000 or so km). I would LOVE opportunity to join this band or tem upon coming to UK again (I am from Switzerland originally, but among other places in Europe and Asia, I do indeed have heavy amount of British ancestry)) thus to ring this bell (as perhaps other two (or more?) Great George. I don't know situation if this is highly coveted, or opportunity available for those of sincere interest (such as myself).
It’s a semitone higher than Peace (Rangimarie), the bourdon of the National War Memorial Carillon In Wellington. It weighs 12.5 tonnes…carillon has 74 bells and is World’s third heaviest
They stopped using the rope. It came off the rope horizontally and went over a pulley to direct it into what was literally a broom cupboard. the friction of rope and pulley meant far more effort was required to ring him that way.
This bell's now an entire century old as of 2024, I'm posting this in February but this year IS indeed it's centennial. Last year was Petersglocke's centennial... Next year will be the centennial of York Minster's change ringing belfry, in 2027 Great Peter of York Minster's centennial, in 2028 the 150th for the change ringing belfry in St Paul's cathedral...
Love it , thanks for that a Great recording. It is always rung from the pit or has there ever been a rope on it. I can remember seeing Great Paul rung by hand in 1963. the rope came down each side of the wheel so effectively two ropes. Also it rang almost up to frame height which it doesn't do now.
The largest manually rung bell in the UK is Great George at Liverpool, at 15 tons however that bell isnt swung but the clapper is brought up to strike the bell. There's also Great Peter of York, about a ton heavier than this bell, rung by rope.
But it really makes me angry, when someone calls the bell "pisspot" or something bad... No bell deserves to be called that... Every bell is somethig special, and no bell is same to another.. So for end all we want of you is a little respet to other bells and kinds of bell ringing @fartwell2000 Zykmund is really vary good :-D
Well, the tune's a bit monotonous (literally!) but a great initiative and something a bit different for the Jubilee. Nice to see you working so hard, Claire! Bet you needed those ear muffs. What's this bell rung for normally? And for how long is it usually rung?
they must be strong to manualy swing a 2.9 ton bell for 20mins i would not have the guts to do that as i would probs be to nervouse to do it if the smacker or what ever its called at the bottem of the ball part of it wacked me a tiny bit

As a medical student in Bristol I loved to hear this bell.

Great George in Bristol Sounded Like Big Ben in London
Great to see this! I love oddities like this.
It’s a semitone higher than Peace (Rangimarie), the bourdon of the National War Memorial Carillon In Wellington. It weighs 12.5 tonnes…carillon has 74 bells and is World’s third heaviest
This is how 13.7 ton Big Ben would look and sound if it was a swinging bell. Such a beautiful giant. 🔔
Yeah, and if it wasn't cracked :D
Awesome bell and wonderful video! I like it! :-)
They stopped using the rope. It came off the rope horizontally and went over a pulley to direct it into what was literally a broom cupboard. the friction of rope and pulley meant far more effort was required to ring him that way.
Wow it amazes me that the big clapper does not crack it.
why should it?
@@phoenixbells Why are you so worried?
@@jayjohnson2919 I´m not worried - that clapper was dimensioned right for this bell
that bell is huge, but the tower is massive! :-) pity there wasn't a nice ring of bells to go with great George.
And/or a carillon
I feel like this bell fits for coventry cathedral, but there's only one bell tower

The sounds look cool 🙂
Mesmerizing.
why do they swing the bell like that? almost reminds me of east bergholt.
Apparently there is a ringing room but know one knows how to get to it or something like that!
The U-shaped headstock and the Counterweight-clapper are castrating the Bell. There´s much more Potential in it.
I've watched a movie the Hunchback of Notre Dame Quasimodo had each one of the church bells named and he had a way of talking to the bells

Usually it is rung with a rope, but sometimes with the wheel itself
There used to be a rope they don’t use it anymore
Oh, very special!
I want to ring that bell once
That is hard work
How did they even get the bell in that tower by the way? I bet moving it was a nightmare!

This must be the largest manually rung bell in the uk.Looks the same as Great paul.
The largest manually rung bell in the UK is Great George at Liverpool, at 15 tons however that bell isnt swung but the clapper is brought up to strike the bell. There's also Great Peter of York, about a ton heavier than this bell, rung by rope.
irkibby Great George swings just a bit every time the clapper hits it
Ashley Monck but they aren't swinging the bell itself are they?
irkibby No
Ashley Monck it looks big
Great!!!
No te entiendo
No the biggest bell in Switzerland weighs about 2-3 hundred kilograms than this bell. But they are pretty much the same size.
he have 9.5 tons
Its now Ring eletrically?
But did you know it's now manualy rung like great paul?
No this bell is still rung manually. Great Paul is electrically rung but the mechanisms are broken and has been silent for years
@@AshleyMonck I’m going to fix it so great Paul will ring again in 2025
@@kyletheringer your probably too young to fix that. You would have to be experienced.

Much easier to ring the bell when in counterbalanced clapper mode.
He did have a rope 10 years ago when I last rang... it wasnt very effective though, so I can see why they might have taken it away!
Just searched for it myself, six people swinging it up-and yes, it does seem to be a shile of pite....
